    Andy delivers again! I don't think I've ever seen such a bend in a 6 weight rod before - that truly was a monster! I love the drone footage, it really shows what's going on in the river much better than the streamside camera.
    I was out streamer fishing yesterday for a few hours but got blanked - not even a follow. This video has inspired me to get back out there and try it again. I don't think I was doing anything much different to you, but I just did not find the fish. Now I know what kind of water to look for.

    The drone footage is invaluable to me as I rejoined the club after many years living away from Derbyshire so to see the various current deflections, seams, slacks and subsurface geography is absolutely priceless for club members who are trying to learn our waters.

  • @aaronrushton1

    Great video this is strikingly similar to how I fly fish for bass in estuaries. I have similar opinions to you on stocking rivers that already have a decent head of wild fish. Stocking brownies is one thing, but I can't imagine how monstrous rainbows like that don't push the smaller brownies and grayling out of pools. As far as I'm concerned, stocked fish have been put in the river to be caught and kept and I would have absoloutely no problem eating that fish, it would be delicious and does the wild fish a favour.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 года назад

      Yep, it's a real conflict for me that one. The other issue is that our club doesn't stock those rainbows, a neighbour club does - do they retain ownership of the fish they stock, and would be knocking one on the head cause issues there? It's a real tough one for me. The solution is not stocking the things, but I don't think that's gonna happen any time soon 😥

    Been on the same stretch of water today for a short session trying to improve my very poor Euro skills, a couple of fish took pity on me and threw themselves upon the hook but what doesn't come accross on your video is how much the river is still pushing through at a rate of knots and get yourself thigh+ deep and you really feel it. Not used a wading staff ("Staffing wade" ref IB) yet on the dove but one might be on my belt next time.

    Fishing streamers is something I don't do enough of. I remember I hired a Guide to learn a new river. He got us on streamers and as we drifted down the river he had me slamming the bank of the river, saying "Tomahawk Chop 1,2,3 Tomahawk Chop 1,2,3 over and over until I swear he took on a German accent!

    @23:31 If the brown trout were in season and I caught minimum size of 12" (club rules), I would have taken the fish.. I catch and release nowadays. A family member is in a club where they stock fish that are meant to be taken and he's taken them in the past. We're also against stocking huge fish in a river. Thankfully the two clubs I'm in don't stock the rivers I fish any more as they want to increase the chances of wild trout to be in the river.

    Just a thought, but I have recently altered my net position, to a central magnet in the middle of the net and another magnet in the middle of my shoulder blades with the net ending up handle up behind my head for an overhead grab, I am positive you are aware of this style, but bloody hell its so much better in that moment. Howard Croston has a very good video on this, might make a good video for you, takes a bit of Blue peter DIY mind lol

I realised when I was editing that I'd put the magnet in the wrong place on my new waders, so I was often grabbing at thin air 🙈😂

    I've streamer fished overseas with a fast sink tip (like Teeny) and generally with unweighted fly but short 2-5ft leader. You've gone for a (slow) sink tip and heavy flies (I guess you could use some split shot on the leader and unweighted fly?) When would you prefer fast sinking tip line over the Rio sink tip? And visa-versa. Thanks for posting the video, made me want to try streamer fishing over here...

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 года назад +1

      Hi Michael, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
      The Streamer Tip is a pretty fast sink (6 ips) so it gets down pretty sharpish. The reason I prefer the Streamer tip with the floating rear head and running line is the mending, obviously you can't mend a line once it's sink and I really don't like losing that control of the line once it lands.
      The other thing is that while I called this water 'deep' I'm not talking much more than 6' so a big Teeny full sinker would be overkill. Maybe on a bigger river, in in a situation where things needed to get down immediately I might look at a T350 but I don't really have those situations here 👍

    • @michaellewis7758
      @michaellewis7758 3 года назад +2

      @@IBandAndyFishing Thanks, I thought the streamer tip was slow 1.5?? Hence I didn't think it would really get down quick enough. Fair comment re: Teeny, I used their line on the Tongariro and loved it - seemed to cast well but sank like depth charge to get down in some fairly deep and faster water. Not sure I'd need that on the Usk. My dream one day is to book a day on the Test or Haddon beats of the Derbershire Wye and just stick on a fast sinking line and orange blob fly, feign ignorance :)

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 года назад +1

      They make an intermediate and a sink6 version so you weren't wrong!
      A big river like the Tonga you'll need the extra weight from the teeny, that's exactly where those lines excel, they'd be a bit much on the dove though 🙈😂

      Thanks Dale, that's really kind! There's really very little public game fishing water in the UK. That's not o say there's none, but there's not much, I can't think of any at all in our county!

      Often the people who own the fishing rights will sub let them to a club or association which an angler can join, it all costs money though! We get very envious of the way it works over there for you guys 👍👍

    what knot do you use to tie on a streamer? does it need to be a loop type so that it can move naturally or is a clinch type knot suitable?

      I don't think it NEEDS to be, but I do like a loop personally. I use a perfection loop 👍

    Why are you guys allowed to wade there when graylings are spawning/just spawned? doesn't make sense for me

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 года назад +1

      It's a tough one, all we can do is be vigilant for spawning fish. Still early here yet, they won't start until the water warms another degree or two.
      Where do you draw the line? Trout spawn December/January, grayling and pike March/April, barbel May/June, chub and tench June/July - for the majority of the season it's spawning time for something 🤷‍♂️

    • @flyfisherluki
      @flyfisherluki 3 года назад +1

      @@IBandAndyFishing I got your point, but here in Switzerland and also in France, penetration of the riverbed is often forbidden until 1 of May or even 1 of June. But as long as you have good grayling populations, I think wading might be okay. But I think it is also a possibility that we ban waders until all graylings are hatched. Why not, we have to decide for the fish, not the fisherman in the first place (my opinion). Cheers mate, love the work you do!

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 года назад +1

      Then I guess my point is, which fish? It can't just be for Trout and grayling but for all fish? No wading between December and August?

      @@IBandAndyFishing A side rant, but depending on where you are - coarse fish *possibly* should just be taken out and knocked on the head. At least the Welsh sections of the Wye never had coarse fish: river.
      The thing about Grayling fishing is that people may 'shuffle' and/or accidentally stomp over the trout redds. Grayling fishing is too cold for me, I'll watch the IB and Andy channel and tie flies in the winter :)

    • @flyfisherluki
      @flyfisherluki 3 года назад +1

      @@IBandAndyFishing Yes it is a hard question. At least in our area, it is only the trout and the grayling which are endangered. So protecting them makes sense to me. Pike and tench are not spawning in our trout rivers, so the only fish left to protect might be the barbel (and chubs in some areas, but there are tons of these guys). I think in the end we just have to take care if wading is allowed during spawning of the grayling. And to be honest, in the videos it looks like you have no chance to see if there are spawning pits in the deep water. Cheers ;)
