  • This is a rare type of beacon to see nowadays. It has two incandescent 620 watt lamps, for a total of 1240 watts of power. In amperage (current), it is 10.33 amps. Most red light flashing tower beacons using any type of incandescent lamp have been replaced with an LED, or light emitting diode light source beacon. One such flashing red light with LED technology uses only 40 watts of power, compared to a 1240 watt old style beacon, like the one in this video. Also, I have never seen any other beacon of this size mounted low enough to see it as well as this video demonstrates. This tower beacon has a weight of nearly 75 pounds, most of the weight being from the red glass lens housing. The purpose of the beacon is to let aircraft pilots know the exact location of a tall obstruction that could otherwise be crashed into and be fatal. Federal Aviation Administration regulations require beacons to flash at a rate of nearly 30 flashes per minute, if they are at around 150 feet or higher.

Nice to see an incandescent beacon still in action I have a H&P KG-114 and a Crouse Hinds FCB-12. The two I have are the older style with the clear outer glass and the red filters.

There is a radio station in my county that has 4 really tall radio towers. Each have one of these lights. You can usually see them from either sides of the county. I can even see them from the top of the hill my house is on

This tower beacon is across the street from an International Airport. Per F.A.A. (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations in the United States, the tower beacon must be on and flashing day and night.

If you are interested, another red light beacon of this size using the same type of incandescent lamps is a KG-114 by Huey & Phillips.
