    I always thought it would be cool to light up a night club using lots of lightbars and beacons from old fire/PD units. It would be cool to see all this collection lit up at the same time.

    • @bluedakota80
      @bluedakota80  8 месяцев назад +6

      If I had a large enough power supply that could do it, I would for sure. In the original Terminator, the nightclub in that movie used a bunch of beacons and aerodynic.

    Love the sound of strobes. These old lightbars had soul and they were all so different. New ones are hard to identify unless you're a Wacker like I am. LED's are overly bright (which isn't always a bad thing) and are very small. These big, chunky, and noisy light bars had something that I love.

    • @bluedakota80
      @bluedakota80  9 месяцев назад +4

      I agree with you. The old ones were their own for sure. Shape, sound, and random flash patterns with different rpm motors.

    • @mr.cheese4635
      @mr.cheese4635 8 месяцев назад +4

      the major drawbacks with LEDs is that at night you just get absolutley blinded which is not ideal

    • @bluedakota80
      @bluedakota80  8 месяцев назад +3

      Im surprised that none of the manufacturers out there have put a light sensor that automatically dimes them down 50% at night. It would be really nice if someone could make the light, so it's not a danger to oncoming motorists and our first responders working a scene hint hint.

      @@mr.cheese4635 You do know only us that like lightbars actually look at them, most drives don't stare directly into them so have no problem.

    My first patrol car had the Federal Signal (second from the top on the left). I hit an owl once, and it damaged the speaker grill in the middle. The mechanics zip tied it back together. Having the speaker right above your head sucked, and I remember the constant whirring of the motors vibrating through the roof, not to mention the battery drain. Fast forward, and LED's became the thing. So to be retro, I bought a blue "tear drop" light and put it on my dash. I got more than a few laughs from newer guys that had never seen them before. Good times.

    • @bluedakota80
      @bluedakota80  8 месяцев назад +4

      They're noisy for sure. Im a volunteer fire and our grass truck or brush truck they are called both. It has an old code 3 on the roof, and that is all you can hear if the siren isn't going. The new leds are cool in their own way but will never have the same charm as an old rotator.

    • @Nervegas
      @Nervegas 8 месяцев назад +2

      We had the Federal Deltas like the top left one and yea, the motor whir on those things was wild, radio could tell if you had your lights on or not whenever you went to talk lol. The strobes weren't much better with the electronic click/whine.

    • @FLBased
      @FLBased 8 месяцев назад +2

      I forgot about the popping, whine sound of the strobes. We bought the strobe bars, but only fitted a handful of our cars with them. They discontinued them pretty quick because they were expensive, and just didn't last. I didn't see it on this guy's wall, but we had a weird, oval shaped one that had the bobbling "intersection clearing" light in the middle. So, when it worked, you could hear the bobbly, rotating sound and the clicks and whirs 😂. That thing always broke and was more like a lazy eye, and the strobes always burnt out so half the bar didn't work. I only drove one car with those because it was on one of the spares when my cruiser was being worked on. I think the only good side was it had a traffic, merge- direction bar under it. @@Nervegas

      I once met a very friendly gentleman from a lakeside town in Michigan who used to be a police major.
      I was 14 and I translated to my dad and his colleagues at this international police meeting in central Europe. He proposed he would invite me to their station do a ride along etc...I was very passionate about American policing, cars, the gear, uniform, 10-codes, everything...I was basically a nerd.
      The major is no longer with us and I am in my 40s but I wish he had known better than to lull a kid daydreaming about when he gets to do a ride along in a real cruiser in the US.
      Anyway Fred, no grudge and RIP.

      Any buy and sell site or apps where you can look at it before you buy it. Or at a swap meet. It is really important to inspect it and make sure it works before buying. Cracked lens can get expensive if you can find it depending on make a model And some take a certain light bulb that you can't buy in your local store. Stay away from federal signal (Vision ) lightbar unless the seller has the controller for it. If he doesn't it's a paper weight. And any strobes that are not a roof light those take a control box to make work.

      Areodynic with the sealed beam bulbs would be good. They aren't super noisy and not terrible on power usage. Or anything with LEDs. There is no sound and very low power use. Anything with rotators and halogen bulbs are going to be noisy and take lots of power. In the video the fourth row. The top and second one down. The all amber and red/blue are the sealed bean bulb style. Those would be my recommendation for what you are looking for.

      That is a Federal Signal Vector. They made to versions of that light. One with just rotator like the one in the video. The other is called a Vision what that one has is smart pods. It has a computer controller and each pod has servos insted of normal motor. That makes it so you can change how that pod worked far as a steady burn, fast or slow rotations, to a wig wag, and a few more things all in the same pod.

      You can find them on ebay, the market place, swap meets, flea markets and there are some sales groups on Facebook that buy sell and trade you can join. To make them work on house power you need a 15 Amp or higher power supply that convert 110v ac down to 12v dc. You can find those on ebay. Or what I'm using is a simple lawn mower battery. Has more than enough power just have to charge every so often if I'm turning the lights on a lot. I just picked up one of those trickel chargers that you would have on something that is going to sit for a little bit to keep the battery charged.
