a friend of mine decanted some of the molotow chrome and sprayed it onto some plastic pieces and tested it after 1 day, 2 days then a week. after 1 day marks appeared, 2 days less marks but still some. but after a week no finger prints appeared only finger oil marks. having seen the results myself I highly recommend using this product for airbrushes but you must leave it a week before touching

I wanted to watch this episode for weeks now and just didn't have the time to do it earlier. I would only need that for the one car model I've got in my stash, but I wanted to know if the stuff is any good. Since you really test things thoroughly it was more informative than any other video on Liquid Chrome I watched before. I guess it'll do for my purpose, because I'll mainly need it for touch ups of the sprue gates, since the chrome parts are nickle plated and not the usual aluminum stuff. It might also work for chrome trim if I thin it down like you did and then try to brush paint the trim carfully. Very helpful video, Will, and worth the time watching it. Take care. Jens

I've bought this pen for this very purpose, as well, and I've gouged that the longer it sits untouched, it becomes more durable and reflective, with details becoming more noticeable. If you decide to try this again, test it and allow it to dry for, unfortunately, week ma couple weeks. It's unconventional, but that's my take on it so far. I like that it looks like it can be thinned down without loss of reflectivity. :)

Apparently you can speed up the curing with a hair dryer gently frequently once its dry over 3 days. Reducing the cure time down... otherwise people say leave it 2 weeks!

I had marked up a 2 inch test panel and chromed it with a 2mm marker. After letting it cure for about a week, I brushed on a light coat of Pledge floor wax and it's held up to touching without leaving prints or ghosting. Test your own perhaps with acryllic clear, light coat after several days.

I use Liqutex Varnish to cover when dry, it keeps a bright look and hardens the chrome paint, I haven't had much success with any other clear , left un-cleared the chrome effect will dull after touching it even when left dry for a few days.

Been playing a bit with this stuff- definitely have to lay it down wet, and let dry a MINIMUM of 72 hours. Alclad Klear Kote works the best so far. Future dulls it a bit.

Try mixing a little clear lacquer in with it , should help with durabillity if it doesn't affect the paint itself. Just an idea.

Refill is 32 cdn here, I think Green World may be better. I cut it with alcohol 99%. Maybe clear floor wax micro cloth buffed. Maybe wet sand 1500 to get the clear fuzz off paint surface or flood it? UV clear coat?

  • @terryhuud3380

Thanks for the video. You've gone through the (nearly same) process I went through demoing the stuff. I had high hopes but even after waiting several days and touching the surface the stuff clouded over. So I am now in the process of looking into clear coats. Sad because as soon as you hit it with any of the clear coats I know of, your going to lose the luster. If I have to clear coat I am thinking of just going back to my favorite chrome paint (Mira-Chrome from Alsa). Nothing beats it IMHO.

I have heard people are having great results covering the molotow with liquitex professional high gloss varnish. it protects the chrome while not affecting the look.edit. I have tested it, however was disappointed. I have then tested covering molotow with alclad 2 alc-600 aqua gloss and success, the chrome is great and protected.

Hi Will, thank you for introducing with those pens. Those pen producers are pretty stupid if not aware that their pens will be disassembled by modelers to spray it :) It was interesting to learn that you can dissolve it with thinner and it give even better result. What I am thinking off how durable the paint would be after 24h. It looks like the paint I got from ARS chrome can and it was hard enough to touch after overnight... So, I wonder how this pen chrome will behave after one day or so...
BTW, that dissolved chrome really reminds me Gunze SM08 paint, which is not bad at all.. but also does not like clear coats

yes, regularly clean your markers with water. the molotow paint is water based acrylic. it wont hurt. routinely clean your marker tips, and threads and valves in warm water to stop this, re assemble, refill ink and enjoy! for extremely dried tips i have used finger nail polish remover or acetone. also, always replace old/worn down tips. normally a good rinse will restore your tips to as good as new.
