    Edit: Would you still paint osl effects on areas painted with Liquid Chrome?

      Yes indeed. I used a little Secret Weapon flourescent wash on some of the chrome and you get a wonderful green glow.

    I use this chrome on a daily basis for painting gundams, I build candy colors on top of it (colored varnish). This paint doesn’t need any primer on plolystyrene such as warhammers or gunplas, I gain so much time in surface preparation. You cannot airbrush it with the same technique as a water based acrylic, you have to be slow and heavy (yes) with this, let it flow to form its mirror surface.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 лет назад +7

      Yep, I learned this in the initial spray, a standard one coat like I would do with the VMeC didn't work. But when I went heavy and built it up, you got that shine. I am going to do a whole video on candy coating this (as well as other metals) and walk people through techniques for adding color, so that should be fun.

    • @maximebakleh8052
      @maximebakleh8052 5 лет назад +1

      My progression is liquid chrome (12h dry) > first coat of transparent very thin like a primer and even. It somewhat stabilizes the liquid chrome and helps keeps it shine its best (20+min dry, until residual tackyness)> second coat is +50% thicker, color starts to build up seriously (20-40min dry until residual tackyness) > third coat is really heavy, not runny but wet (2days dry, one week is best). Doing so will give a very smooth surface with not much orange peel, and a very deep iridescent color. I have a few pics of the process on hand if you want to see the finish, but no camera can do justice on a nice candy color. I use Gunze transparent color with the non leveling thinner.

    Hey Vince! I've just finally tried this stuff today and I have to say - I am very impressed! It is every single thing you said (not that I'd expect otherwise, but the experience in person is nice!) Even though I don't think I'll have a lot of uses for it, I'm very happy with what it gives. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Used the Molotow Liquid Chrome on die cast car parts with a 50/50 reduction in an airbrush, works great. Kudo's for knowing about the Spaz Stix Ultimate Mirror Chrome Clear Coat Paint to seal it. No other clear can keep the reflectivity as if there was no clear on it. Great job!!

    I actually have this product in my tool kit for painting. I don't use it for MOST steel effects, but I do like to use it on areas that would need a high shine in real life, such as hydraulic pistons and such. That's just the mechanic in me though. The drying time is a bit of a pain though, and I usually let it sit untouched for at least a day after application just to be sure.

    • @VinceVenturella

    I has used molotow through the pen for a while. However for an airbrush paint that's a perfect chrome. Spazstix makes a chrome that is at least as good as molotow that is made for airbrush. I have both. I see no different. Perfect mirror either way.

    I discovered this recently through Adam Savage's Tested Channel and I use it for the exposed metal in pistons and other such super shiny surfaces. I found it works really well on Imperial Knights, which have a lot of metal bits and pistons. It's a pretty good edge highlighter, too! I wonder about varnishing with just straight Future which I find has a sharp gloss coat with very weird properties, but I haven't tried it.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 лет назад

      I am not sure, might work, it does tend to preserve shine, but I would definitely test first on something you don't mind if it doesn't work as the shine is so perfect and mirror like.

    When you brush Molotow on it will not shrink but in fact self level and give the mirror chrome finish. When you airbrush it in even heavy coat it will self level like it is supposed to.

      To get in ahead of a future video then, I should also recommend getting yourself a nail varnish shaker on ebay or amazon, battery or mains powered to shake your paints to get them properly mixed before you use them. Better than a glass bead or ball bearing without the risks.

    • @VinceVenturella

      @@VinceVenturella While only technically quite a cheap thing £25 here or so, it has really helped me a lot. I got it because I'm disabled and shaking up a lot of paint bottles will mean I wont be able to actually paint afterwards, ball bearings of many different qualities had ruined a whole lot of my paints and I wanted something safe and well a lot less work. It was difficult to commit to spending that much money on it, but after I tried it a few times I didn't regret it. Mixes the bottle contents better than you could manage by hand or with a metal bearing or bead, probably on par with a stirrer, only without the need to open it up and waste paint cleaning it off tools. It seems to stir partially empty bottles better than full ones, it certainly benefits from having a bit of air in there.

    Thanks for doing a Chrome review Vince. In regards to airbrushing, I saw you tried the Spaz Stix varnish, but have you ever tried the paint itself? Great video! Perhaps you've seen it already Vince, but there's a video from youtube user "GunPla Fixation" about two other types of chrome paint (Spaz Stix and Alclad) through the airbrush and what really makes a huge difference is the buffing he does in the end. But quick question I hope you can help with: any ideas on how to achieve a blue cobalt-like effect using this paint on a mini with medieval armor? Sure, I would avoid an allover wash, but the gloss wash would be fine in the recesses (I might prefer the Scale 75 inktensity black actually) As to the blue, some Metalsmith Blue Ore or Ghost tint blue, some Scale 75 Blue Ink, some Daler Rowney FW blue or Turquoise ink. Any of those thinned to a glaze and put in places from the 3/4 midtone to shadow should achieve the effect you want.

    Have you had the pleasure of working with a gold version of this kind of pen? I'll have to pull out my pens to check the brand when I get back home but after having used Molotow pens for detail work I went and looked at the section of Hobby Lobby where they keep the Molotows and discovered that one brand of gold paint pens out of like 5 different brands actually has the same reflective effect the Molotow does in a gold color, but I have yet to look for a refill cartridge. I've used it for details (mostly aquilas) on my Solar Auxilia and it POPS.

      @@VinceVenturella I believe I left the pen in my other pair of pants about 90 miles away. I thought I had it on hand but I don't; I'm fairly certain it was a Decocolor Gold Pen. I think there's more than one (one or more may be oil based) but I know I found it in the art pen section of Hobby Lobby near the Molotow pens; there are also Molotow pens in the model section, but that's NOT where I found this one.

    • @Yipyiohorigin
      @Yipyiohorigin 5 лет назад

      @@VinceVenturella I could be wrong on the brand though, because I bought like 5 different gold pens on a whim once and only one of them was truly reflective. Not 100% as reflective as the Molotow (it's gold, after all, not chrome) but it was pretty damned close. If I go back to where the rest of my paint supplies are at this week, I'll confirm it.

    • @Yipyiohorigin
      @Yipyiohorigin 5 лет назад

      I finally got a chance to get my hands on my pens again and the one I was thinking of is indeed the DecoColor Premium. The description says it's an "oil based opaque metallic paint marker" fo what that means to you. It's a little on the bronze side rather than a bright yellow, but the reflective sheen it has mitigates that somewhat. I haven't been able to find a refill canister, unfortunately, but generally I've been able to get the work I need done with the pen itself, and if I really wanted to airbrush it I'm pretty sure I could pump the pen enough to get a few drops into the hopper. I have pictures of my models with it on it if you'd want to see it in action, but I'm sure there are pictures online of it being used on other kinds of projects.
