Thanks for the information. Simple, clear and well recorded. Now I'm going to watch all of your other vids.
Pete
Another mistake I was always taught was that "overmixing" could cause the primer to kick much faster. Thank you for doing what you do to help the people that simply don't know how any of this works. Wish this was available 10 years ago I had to go to a technical school or get yelled at by an older tech just to learn something. This would've been much easier.
Just watched a couple of your videos and I actually become engaged. They are very clear and explanatory which makes it these videos GREAT to learn from.
heavyprogressive Glad you found them useful. Thanks for watching.
Great video. Thank you for imparting your knowledge to us newbs. Keep up the great work!
Long-time viewer and early purchaser of your e-book. Great to see you adding information and voice-overs to the videos. Very helpful, and nice to know that you're still training tomorrow's body shop teams!
Great vid. Was really enjoyable to watch. Some vids are straight up torture to watch with 'in your face' tutoring etc.
Found your vid easy a informative, have subscribed. Thanks.
Body work done, now about ready to spray some panels. Oh yeah, this is the first auto(my personal vehicle) I've ever painted and I want to thank you for your excellent, easy to follow videos. I tried watching videos from several other posters but most had me searching for something better for whatever the reason just minutes into them. I very much appreciate how you developed a library by steps in the auto body and paint process. My confidence and knowledge quickly and dramatically increased once I found one of your vids. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience with the world of us DIY. I would have not started this project yet without your help. I have to admit, my body work looks as good as shop pay work at a mid level shop. It took me a decade(no not really)but it's tight and right. Many thanks sir
Clear, lucid explanation. I'd listen to this guy again.
Thanx for sharing your knowledge! Much appreciated.
Thank you very much, I just learn a lot from your videos. Keep up the great work.
thanks el chapo

lmfao beautiful comment 10/10
Fantastic info. Thank you. Using your technique on my sculptures.
I came to find out how long I could wait before applying paint to primer. I really appreciate you clarifying between chemical and mechanical bond.
Just about the best easy to understand explanations out there yet. Thanks, Donnie.
Paisano
Great advice here. Essentially, less can be more. I've always thought the same...👍
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for people. :)
Just getting started. Very informative. Thank you,
thanks for taking the time to teach others your skills. Good job!!!!
You are spot on even on spray cans they state these recommendations are based on 70 degrees with 50% humidity. so your on your own to figure that out.
Thank you this has been really helpful, I'm about to respray parts of my beloved 2005 mazda b2500, I'm a bit nervous! Hopefully it will look smarter than it does now ! Will watch this a few times I think. Thank you !
I’m spraying a truck with ShopLine epoxy and 2k primers right now. I’m trying to double a triple check all my info. These videos have helped a lot. Thank you
Thanks for answering my question about mandatory primering first before topcoating one single panel. I have a decent hood, which just wanted sand up and spray, Not wasting time or money priming the entire hood, there is no filling involved and no bare metal. I just remember the days back in the '70's when I used to pull the car under a cool tree and sand and spray it then go out in the same car later that day!
Thanks for sharing your vids, Cheers fella from England.
Like I have always said, since I learned my lesson....LET THE PAINT DRY!! Take everything into consideration, temp, humidity, T.D.S. Technical Data Sheets, save a ton of time doing rework!
Excellent video, a great help and now in my favorites.
really enjoying your videos, thank you
Most of what I now about paint and paint prep I learned from Donnie Smith in the past 12 months, and just last weekend I finally sprayed metallic base and clear to finish off my Jeep restoration, completely amateur DIY. These are the best paint/prep info videos on the web, inspiring me and giving me confidence to take on a huge project. Donnie - you're humble, wise and patient - thanks for teaching me so much! My Jeep looks amazing, a dream come true.
Here's the before/after, BTW: imgur.com/bodcGdj
That looks great!!!! Thanks so much for your kind words. That means a lot. I have been busy lately and have not had time to make videos. I am starting a new collision repair program in Colorado....this is not a good time to be ordering things because everything is on backorder. These type of comments makes me want to get back to making videos soon. Thank you, Donnie
I'm glad you mentioned the audio issues. So many people of RUclips think they can be heard when they walk away from their camera or when they're in an empty, echo-chamber room. Drives me crazy. If you are truly interested in maintaining professional, clear audio, I use the Azden brand Pro WM - WR. The WM you wear on your person somewhere, concealed if you like and clip a little mic to your collar, t-shirt or maybe even inside your respirator. It connects the wireless radio WM to the WR which is mounted by the camera and receives your audio then passes it over to the audio in jack on your camera. Just look it up, it's a very good thing for consistent audio quality. Again, only if you're interested in professional quality.
Just what a novice is looking for.
Clear consice no flim flam no bs.
Excellent videos.
If you wanna know how it's done then sir just sit down and check out this series of videos.
THanks mate. Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great info ! Looking forward to watching more.
Yes,flash time is very important,i use to build up high with primer to make sure I had enough to block off to level the work well ,not good.so now I spend the time using polyester putty to make my work very very close to smooth, then primer a lot less .with good flash times in between, the results are amazing,ty for vid.
Very informative.
Very interesting.
Well done.
Big thumbs up for the Fonz. Really I didn't think the quality was that bad to complain about, the important thing is we were able to learn.
The Car Paint Master Jedi!!!! excelent man!!!
I enjoy your videos and teaching. Keep up the great work..I really appreciate your time.
This was a good video brings me back to high school when you was my auto body teacher at john tyler
fully enjoying all the videos. First time going through a restoration where parts of the car are being painted due to dealing mostly with rust and small chips and peeling - thanks greatly. I've got lots more of your videos to watch.
I am flag you have found the videos useful. Thanks for watching!
One of the BEST videos on paining that I have seen...Thanks!!
Wow, thank you!
thanks for the video, its the exact opposite of the advice I read by someone who was a "self-proclaimed professional painter", painting a guitar, will be removing the primer tommorow and doing it properly with your advice!!!
Excellent production quality.
Thanks man, this is a nice refresher with good information.
Very helpful information, thanks.
Well explained, Thank you Sir!
Enjoy your video, thanks for sharing this with us.
Excellent video as always
Great information with good detail. I happen to have an accuspray 3M prime gun that I will be spraying with. Wish me luck because this will be my first project on my own 1972 Dodge Dart. I'm repainting the whole car and doing some minor bodywork. I'm excited and trying to do it right the first time. I plan to use a Develbliss gun for paint.
Awesome. Thank you for these helpful videos.
I learn more in 15 minutes with your videos than hours and hours elsewhere.
You're right about people putting on too much paint or primer. I've watched a lot of RUclips videos on painting cars and I don't know how many times I've heard someone say " I'm just going to put a light coat on for the first coat " and then they go ahead and put enough paint on for two complete coats !
Thanks for the tips El Chapo!
Very informative video, thanks
Great info!! I'm teaching myself how to paint and I learned a lot from your videos already!!
I'm glad you're finding the videos useful.
Thanks the tips and information.
thank you best video on paint very thorough . GOD BLESS AN DONT STOP.
Thanks for watching and your kind words. I have more videos about priming, blocking, and prep you may find useful at www.collisionblast.com/paint-prep-videos/
Wow this man know what he's talking about. Thanks a lot keep it up!!!
Thanks
Extremely well structured and very concise practical HowTo knowledge! Especially like your most common mistakes made by beginners. I haven't done body work or painting for about 20 years but I can really relate to those pitfalls you mention. As a final step before paint, I usually applied the epoxy primer since it was pretty thick and provided good filling and blending qualities to the surfaces form. After sanding with a long block I was able to get extremely flat or straight results.
When I was painting I started with a Binks gun but later discovered the Develbiss. The Develbiss was worlds better than the Binks I was using at the time. It had a much finer spray or better atomization than the Binks.
Great series of videos!
Thanks for watching the video and providing your experience.
well done very nice information thanks.
Very useful info!
i love your videos ....good job
lots of good information, thanks for that...
Good tips Donnie.
Awesome video!!
Thanks for the video! Makes me worry a whole lot less about painting my car in the coming week.
You should do more video..ur great
Good tips thanks man.
I missed your liner incident but I didn't miss your misaligned aircap! :) Good video. Least talked about and most overlooked step. I have yet to meet a bodyman that will take the time to wait between coats, adjust air pressure properly and lay the prime down properly and prime inside of sanded area.
improper prep of the metal or filler are the chief causes of the need to "over prime". Flash time is the time it takes for primer to basically lose its wet look. I like that this guy emphasizes reading the material data sheet...a smart bodyman is one who reads!!!
Thank you for making such an informative video.
Thanks for watching.
I painted and did body repair back in the 60s and 70s but materials are different now and I haven't kept up with the technology, Your Videos are a great help. Thanks.
+highdesertworkshop Materials are different and so dang expensive....I still am amazed how expensive they are compared to the 80's.
Great vid with good info thanks
Wanting to paint my engine bay. Your videos are a real big help. Thumbs up

Glad it was helpful!
thanks donnie for all your help im a newbe to all of this trying to find out what to do im a mechanic working on my 68 chevy c10 ground up. so do you need to regular prime over self etching primer before you paint
Good video!
Love your videos. Thanks so much
Thanks for watching!
Hi,great video very informative, can you tell me if you can paint your top coat straight on top of the epoxy primer or do you have to apply primer surfacer on top first ?....Many thanks
Excellent!!!
very informative video, cheers. Is chemical adhesion preferred over physical adhesion?
Yes very wise words, I've been painting for over 35 years and have seen some changes in paint technology, and one rule I have always followed and have said is, read the darn instructions, some poor guy spent hours writing these so the least we can do is read them. And as you said, the data sheets are there for a reason.
You don't live in Napier do you?
Great work buddy! I do mainly bodywork want to start dipping my toes into painting , these are great videos. What kind of spray guns would you recommend for light painting , for priming and whatever else may be needed?
excellent videos, very informative""
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. I'm working on a page with more prep, prime, and block videos. Check them out at CollisionBlast.com/PaintPrepVideos
i should've watched this man's video from his experiences. I just got done sanding, bonding and then spraying primer on my car parts. It looks nice now, but I'm scared of what awaits. His video''s make sense to me from my experiences so far.
thanks donnie you explayn it to us beginers well i thank you.
It would be really great if you have a playlist which covers every step from stripping the paint to repaint and polishing. Love your videos. ;)
+Rahul Jones Thanks for the suggestion and for watching. You may find this useful www.collisionblast.com/dent-repair/
Also about flash times, humidity plays a role in how quick the VOC evaporate, this is especially true with WB paint.
great video
nice job
Thank you! I've got paint on the brain and didn't think about undercoating.
You have helped my husband because a auto painter
Big Help Thanks
Good video just keep thinking about him being El Chapo. If he had mentioned a tunnel I would have lost it!
Great video, thanks.
Thanks for watching
