@@Yumbos AI wasn't capable of that kind of work back in 2008. It's probably just underpaid interns/assistants whose mistakes slip under the radar until it's too late. These things happen. DBZ still gets printed with the original toner screen mistakes made by assistants, for example.
I just LOVE Araki's mentality about color, how it doesn't have to be limited by consistency or other things like that, and how you can go wild with different combinations or stetics, like white hair with purple clothes and green shoes.
@@truelich1231 and that has become a characteristic of JoJo's character. They look out of the ordinary to seem unique. It also attracts people. You can say his art style is quite **Bizarre*
another problem i like to point out about the colored jojo scans is that they often ignore the actual shading araki does with screentones, every time araki uses screentones to put shadows on the character's faces the shadows are often ignored and the faces are shaded as if theres no shading done by araki himself
@@crystalalumina that's pretty much because from what i've read so far from one piece oda doesn't seem to use screentones for the sake of shading but rather for the sake of making things stand out better like making a character face all screentone to make the character stand out from the white background, however they do have the same problem of shading everything the same no matter what like they don't really have a light source
This is why I always found it funny when I saw certain fans complain that Giorno's suit colour was "changed" to pink. Even the colours used for the action figures are more "official" than Shueisha's hit-and-miss digital colour scans.
I always found it odd that Giorno had pink instead of blue, but this does explain some of it. Does this mean thst the fighting games followed the Shueisha colors instead of asking Araki?
@@Zero-ds9ws His outfit appears in blues and greens in certain volume covers as well as the 2002 Capcom beat em up. PS3 All Star Battle released after the colored scans started but didn't follow em 1:1 so who knows if Giorno's palette was based on those.

@@Joanbueller007 Yeah, besides minor mistakes like Narancia's boom box, the anime is really polished and it really shows the passion of all the people who worked on it. Ik it's a little stupid but I don't pirate JoJo out of respect for DP lol.
One thing I feel needs to be mentioned is that despite the anime having "consistent" color schemes, they still use a _lot_ of scenes where they completely upend the color scheme into someting visually striking, especially in a tense scene (which, admittedly, is 90% of Jojo). Not just in a sense of "Giorno has blue hair now" but rather "Joseph Joestar is a pulsing rainbow gradient covered in halftone". Absolutely fabulous. Still can't get over the bold artistic decision to have Morioh covered in yellow skies, lime green streets and deep purple trees for the majority of the anime.
The manga should be read in b&w but I find it easier in some action scenes to see what's going on in color. All the black ink just blends together for me in the fuller pages.
I agree. I think a good part of that is in part due to the the quality if the scans, if I were reading the actual manga then I'm sure the details would be a lot clearer, but with the scans I was checking out a lot of the action scenes seemed really busy and it was hard to make out exactly what was going on. Another thing is that I'd switch between my phone and my laptop, and reading the black and white on a phone just makes the issue worse (which Hamon Beat mentioned in the video). In any case I always took the colored versions to be non-canon since most JoJo characters don't have things like canon outfit/hair colors, so it's never been an issue for me to see the anime portray characters one way while the manga portrays them another, and the random flaws in the coloring don't really bother me when I'm reading.
@@tafazzi-on-discord there are some pages that are impossible to understand. But I agree with hamon that it's better to read in B&W, you can see way better the details of the drawing that way.
Tooru's clothes are also scuffed. He's obviously wearing a vest/sleeveless hoodie over an other shirt. But he's drawn as if it's one single single piece of clothing.
That's the worst part of the Shueisha scans, they just turn so many things as monochrome and smudge over details for the sake of painting them faster sadly
I honestly don't like black and white, for other manga i genuinely understand things pretty well but for JoJo, a lot of the fights are pretty confusing and the colors help me figure out what's even goin on.
No other part of the manga visually confuses me like part five...don’t get me wrong, the art is incredible, but araki’s use of tone and solid black in almost every panel along with the bold pen used to draw the backgrounds gives me a headache when the characters are fighting. The man in the mirror fight, for example, was awesome but trying to figure out what was happening was very tricky
@@onewheeljoeswanson1780 My greatest difficulty was actually King Crimson specially the Bruno and GER fights, i can now understand why "It Just Works" was such a big meme back then.
I always found it interesting how the colored scans for part 7 actually goes through a pretty significant change that makes it feel way different from chapter 1 to the end of the part. I especially noticed it at first in the arc with Mandom. Personally I find some of the colored pages such as Tusk Act 4's reveal to be very pretty. Things like how KC's time skip dimension is portrayed in the colored scans also made it feel easier for me to process what's going on in the page. The good bits of the colored scans such as those really just make me appreciate Araki's drawings overall.
Part 7 might have the worst colored scans imo, mostly because of how it blurs out the hatchmarking and the backgrounds are always these soft gradient colors, which makes for the complete opposite effect intended (that being visual contrast to the action in the foreground). Part 1 & 2 have pretty decent colored scans, and yes they do help make really complicated stuff more readable but Part 7 really suffers, especially its background art.
@@SerenGetteri thought so too, alot of the really contrasting details just gets coloured out. But, I did read all of it in coloured, and I just simply enjoyed the story. Dunno why i even-
Part 5 really benefits with colour, part of the reason why the Manga version was one of my least favourite Manga Parts for a while was because of the black and white scans making Scenes and Arcs nearly impossible to follow. Like, you tell me that Man in the Mirror, White Album, Bruno vs Diavolo (King Crimson especially fucks me off in the Manga) and Oasis are easy to follow in B&W. It's a massive reason why I find the Anime version to be infinitely superior, despite it following the exact same plot and pacing.
I’ve read part 8 and it was a bit of a challenge to adapt to the black and white halfway through, but once I got used to it the art admittedly looks a lot better and really feels like a manga

@Durag Chirag sorry for the late response, but I definitely recommend Steel Ball Run in black and white, people say the coloring looks good, but for me it looks ugly, it adds to much detail to already very detailed drawings, I mean Lucy's face somehow looks older in the colored version for example, also the first chapters are like the worst part, they look smudged over and everything looks like clay, definitely parts 7 and 8 should be read in black and white

I have trouble distinguishing different objects and characters when reading the black and white manga, so I choose to read it colored, as it's easier for me. This is, for some reason, only an issue with JoJo. No other manga I've read has given me this issue.
Same, years ago I read part 5 without color and I just couldn’t make sense of what I was seeing for the most part despite manga being my preferred way to experience stories. I rather like Araki’s art style but damn it’s hard to make sense of some of the busier pages (at least for me)

I honestly feel kinda sad I only read in color until part 8. Some of the pages I thought just looked bad actually look pretty good in black and white. Oh well, guess it's an excuse to reread the whole series without the coloring
I wish to. I was reading Jojo's from Manga Rock and they did a weird listing where individual parts were collared but the original manga was named as a compilation or something like that. That is why I read only the coloured and downloaded them before the app closed. I was reading part 6. And now I'm switching to monochrome. In the future, I will definitely reread the series. Maybe I will even learn Japanese.
I always read jojolion in black and white and after seeing this colores pages for the first time I can say that the original versions looks way better. At least IMO
Same. When i read Part 1 in colored manga, for some reason a lot of thing felt so off and inaccurate compared to the anime (you may say that it's cuz my memory and fondness of part 1). But when i finished reading the colored manga and start reading the B&W for confirmation, suddenly it looks beautiful and the anime felt faithful to the core. It's just shows how much dedication David Production puts in the animation
where can you find good black and white scans, please tell me lol. i’ve been looking for months and i can only find ones with really shit translation if i can find them at all im desperate
Man this video opened my eyes I've always thought the colors didn't had that Jojo feel on the manga, it didn't have the stylish colorful look araki does in his painted jobs, and sometimes felt cheaply made This context made me respect even more araki's work, unfortunately I can't read the physical copy, but I'll go for black and white digital anyway.
Here in Italy we have Jojolion translated, at 10:06 you can see the cover made by star comics an Italian company that sells mangas and comics in general.
Abbiamo sempre avuto un gran culo per quanto riguarda JoJo, diversamente dagli americani. Sono state fatte diverse ristampe negli ultimi decenni a partire dal '93, non ne siamo mai stati a corto diciamo
I prefer the colour because it gives the manga a bit more life. I do agree that the details in the black and white look phenomenaly better then the colour scans and I might even re read them in black and white but only if I can get physical copies cause I read all the coloured ones on my phone
Araki’s art in black and white is so good, it’s a shame there’s people out there who aren’t willing to experience it. Also, Tooru’s recent color scheme within the shueisha scans is atrocious. So many conflicting colors and pallets really ruins a lot of the great moments we’ve had in the wonder of u arc.
I advised one of my friends to stop reading the coloured version as soon as she reaches the Head Doctor's first apparition. I showed her the Shueisha colours when she was done and she understood why I gave this advice. Wonder Of U and Tooru are my favourite JoJolion characters, and they got absolutely destroyed

Could be your reading and on to small the screen, or without proper lighting. I struggled with this too before I got a tablet and started reading and on that, Most physical manga is printed too small for me because I have bad eyesight.
then that is a bad mangaka. araki black and white drawings are completely perfect in most cases (you know, for manga viewing standards), so being un able to tell what is going on would be an issue. you would probably need a bigger screen.
You're not quite the only one. When it comes to getting into manga, especially if you're used to anime or even stuff like your average American comic books, the black and white is a bit of a pill to swallow whether it's you basically going against how in most instances we're trained to view black and white as either a sign of ye olden times or as a sign of a lack of budget and sometimes... the art can be a struggle whether you have actual diagnosed problems that impede on this or it could just be a matter of experiences varying from person-to-person. Much like how one person can view a piece of art as great and another as a piece of garbage, some people can adapt quickly to the detail and know what's going on from the get-go and others may struggle and on devices that can be tricky. I mean it's why the Jump Digital Color stuff exists because indeed when trying to read on certain devices, let me tell you, it can be HELL on the eyes trying to figure out what's going on. So really, don't feel bad for your choice, especially since the video is not about putting down those who happen to have that preference. It's just about explaining the source of the scans, the purpose they serve and the issues they have to counter the misconceptions that surround them. If you prefer it a certain way though then by all means, continue enjoying it in that manner since what matters is that you're still getting into the story and hopefully enjoying it all the same.
Bro you literally change the way I see the colors in the scans. I remember that I kinda refuse to read Jojolion too bc it was black and white but like it’s better that way rather than saturated colors that kill my eyes. Thanks for the video.
wow I am addicted to this channel blew my mind learning about the scans, I loved the colored scans and assumed they were the official colors. never noticed the airbrush effect until now. Keep up the great work man love the content.
When I read the colored scans, I assumed they were the work of dedicated fans- so I just assumed the DIO meeting Pucci at daytime stuff was a harmless mistake; I was just glad that they had gone through the trouble of doing their best to enhance the experience. Knowing they’re official has changed my view lmao
I was reading parts 1-7 on my phone and I can confirm that colours really helped me to see wtf was actually happening. If I had a choice I would love to read it on paper, but yeah.... The manga is kinda expensive for me- I would like to collect it in English. Recently JJBA has been started to be published in my first language, but still I would rather have it in English. Also it's funny how fans were accusing Araki of even more 'forget moments', but he had really nothing to do with this. I love color schemes in his artworks- they change and surprise me. Like for example redhead Dio- pls he looks so good.
Im actually reading the physical part 4 manga in english, and I love actually being able to stop and see the detailed artwork with my own eyes rather than an image of them on a screen. Koichi confronting Kira was amazing to read physically
thank you very much for puttin this video together. this can sometimes be a really frustrating conversation to have, but you covered all the major points in a very clear and concise way.
The fight with it and Born this Way are the best colored sections in the series. Especially since Doobie Wah also utilizes the anime's "dramatic color change" technique in some panels.
Very nice video, this is very informative since not many go in depth on the colored scans beyond just going "no canon colors". I prefer color altogether though of course reading manga you get used to black and white. But I can understand your preferences
I always knew the colored versions were not done by Araki, many manga's are not colored by their authors and the physical copies are usually in black and white (or sometimes red) but understanding that I still prefer JoJo's in color. Just gives it a bit more funk imo.
The only reason I read the colored manga is cuz I genuinely cannot follow any action taking place in black and white manga. Doesnt matter if its JoJo's, One Punch Man, or any other series, I just cannot read the action if its not colored. Thus I'll take a flawed colored version over a black and white version anyway
I remember when I first started reading I started with colored adventure purely because I wasn't used to B&W manga, plus Araki's detailed pieces just made things even harder to understand. In hindsight, I realize it was just because I was reading it on a phone, and like you pointed out, the colored pages look better on a phone. Looking at the same B&W pages either on a bigger screen or physically in your hands make it so much clearer and a genuinely better experience than the colored pages on a phone, and *infinitely* better than colored pages on anything other than a phone.
this is why i love the anime's take on colors. there is a consistent, canonical color scheme, however they frequently go pretty crazy to emphasize scenes, emotions, or any other thing. color is used as a tool, to be used however the scene demands, just like anything else
Yeah I've never been a fan of the color version of Jojo, which has sadden me for some time because I always thought that they were made by Araki, but only just found out around the start of Part 8 that they're not by him at all. Now it just frustrates me, because it's very clear Araki is a master of color and design, but what's portrayed in the colored manga is nowhere near his mastery for colors. If anything, I think people should realize that Araki experiments with color schemes ALL of the time, and anyone who's a fan of his should too experiment with their palettes and be loose when making fanart. And if you don't know how too or are too timid to experiment, I recommend the book "A Dictionary of Color Combinations" by Sanzo Wada.
fascinating stuff. this makes me want to reread the whole series purely in black and white rather than color i admit i have been loving the black and white chapters in jojolion and i love the fan-color edits, but i do want to experience the series purely, like you said
I never noticed the mistakes until just now. I really don't usually pay much attention. I read most of my JoJo as the manga form (I have read the first couple of parts in their English form physically). I decided to go online for the others (I kind of did a juggle between the original and the coloured versions), although I still do have some of the JoJolion manga and read them despite my lackluster Japanese linguistic skills.
reading in black and white threw me off a little bit, but now i dont really have a problem with it anymore. However i would always prefer the coloured manga over the black and white one, simply because i like it better. The points you made were valid, however one shouldnt bash people for enjoying the coloured manga more (OBVIOUSLY)
i have been reading manga since i was 12, and in all this time i have never found a fandom so evasive of the original black and white version, i've read some jojo parts including the first one in black and white and never had an issue with it, but other people say araki's drawing are confusing.
They probably read the B&W versions on a small screen, so it's understandable they'd prefer the colored scans I say, it's better if you read the B&W versions on a computer or buy it physically.
@@hollowsid9623 i would say jojo's doesn't really translate well to small screen, mainly because of paneling issues, Still readeable but a bit of a pain in the ass. so you are probably right
They are also most probably oversaturated and need some deviant art furry - like saturation or aren't capable of distinguish forms... or using shitty definition on phones. Or never tried to read One Piece.
Good video man. It's good to point out the many errors of the official scans, and it's important to emphasize that Jojo has no canon colors (mostly). To be honest, it was annoying to see people complaining about Giorno's clothes when GW was being aired. And I can agree with you that Araki's work looks better in paper. On the other hand, sometimes Jojo can be hard to understand when you read it in black and white. Maybe it's just me, that I'm not used to read manga, but a lot of time I found myself completely clueless about what I've read in Jojolion. That didn't happened to me in Steel Ball Run. What I'm saying is that the colors scans make the visuals less ambiguous for new readers like myself.
I like how the Anime occasionally references the Colorized Manga's palettes for some characters, like Jotaro's Alternate Part 3 Color Scheme, shown during Dio's Time Stops, and how he has the navy hair and clothes, with the magenta-esque shirt.
I think Giorno's outfit is a bit of a special case. Sure, the blue may not have been the original intended color, but the light pink in the anime is still a far cry from the manga, especially since in the original black and white version, it's colored dark as if it's supposed to be a darker color.
@@benet3931 I think there's an obvious difference there. Leaving the night sky white is something many mangakas do in order to save ink; they can rely on readers to know it's nighttime based on context clues. It's far different from intentionally shading a character's outfit to be darker.
I think the colored manga are for fans of the anime that have never read manga before but want to read ahead. I think this is most likely the case as first-time manga readers might find it hard to transition from anime to manga
Agreed. I started reading it after part 5 anime ended and its a relief that i havent read it in b&w. If there wouldnt be a colored version i would have dropped it.
fr... when Jojolion's coloured pages stopped i begrudgingly went over to the black and white. the colours are just softer for my eyes But I'm caught up to Jojolion and am used to the b&w. I'll be reading jojo over in b&w from now
I’d like to add while sometimes it can be ‘difficult’ to follow along in B&W, trust me when I say 90% of the time, it’s simply a bad scan. Take a look at any of physical copies for the the volumes. It’s extremely clear and don’t have to worry about stuff like saturation and brightness on your phone. Plus, if you go to Barnes & Noble, you get a really cool looking book.
I understand the whole problem of coloring mistakes, of course clothes shouldn't be skin colored or vice versa. However, the point about it being blurry is a misunderstanding. It appears to be more blurry because of contrast, not because of bad lines or less lines. Black and white will always look clearer than colored images, since the contrast is lower in the colored ones.
Not entirely. The anime doesn't look blurry (albeit definitely less detailed), because they use flats for coloring instead of color gradients. Color gradients may be more realistic, but often make surfaces look softer than the linework may suggest. The color scans definitely look airbushed.
Absolutely agree with you in regards to B&W manga vs colored - I see a lot of people nowadays complaining about how there are so few colored manga, but what they don't seem to realize is that depicting things in a grayscale fashion takes just as much skill, if not moreso thanks to the pallet limitations. I often find fully colored manga dull by comparison, or else too busy for my eyes to really appreciate. Plus, having the manga traditionally in B&W makes the covers and celebratory color pages feel more special.
I think part of the issue is that some of the easily available BW scans, especially for Part 1, are of pretty poor quality, to the point that it’s often difficult to tell what’s actually going on because the contrast’s way too high. I restarted Part 1 in color because the BW was genuinely confusing at times, and from there I kinda just stuck with it until I caught up with Jojolion.
The few color scheme I enjoy a lot is the Love Train arc, the entire lighting was just beautiful and holy, but other times, it just did too much mistake that I can't forgive them
9:50 I can attest to that. The first time I saw Jojonium in a bookstore, I finally understood why people read the manga in black and white. The lines and etches look gorgeous on printed paper. Even Part 1 looks great! A bitmap scan cannot do justice to the beauty of Araki’s line work. If you can, read the manga printed.
i love that jojo stuff is on my feed now, and ive actually been reading the black and manga, when its colored on a few pages i love seeing how they are colored
Id love to see a fan project that goes through and recolors pages with more vivid and imaginative color schemes. Maybe taking a collaborative approach with tons of artists coloring their own pages in their own unique ways, and compiling it together.
0:24 I've already read JoJolion, I've studied Jobin's face to learn how to replicate the artstyle, I fucking adore Part 8, and I would just stare at some panels just because they were gorgeous. I just noticed Jobin has the Higashikata family crest on his lower button.
I loved the colouring especially part 6 and 7.one of my favourite parts of the colouring were the colours used for stands they look as of they glow. Best example for this would be Jolyne stand, the blue they use is actually beautiful and looks great in the coloured pages.
Sadly my first redthroughs were digital colourised and I actually had a break on jojolion because I thought it didn’t go past the coloured chapters. But after buying the physical manga 1-3 you can just tell how much better it looks
It's disappointing that some people only wanna look at coloured versions of JoJo. It's a big problem in America I feel as people want coloured comics but unfortunetely I think both the feel of the art is lost and many colourists do horrible jobs. Where it looks to digital and they use cheap Photoshop tricks that look horrible and tacky. Glad I have black and white versions of some of stardust crusaders, cause honestly I wouldnt wanna look at any other versions. I'm also loving the monochrome colours for some of the pages that were selected in the printing process. That's how it should be done in my opinion.
Reading the colored scans physically would be atrocious and vice versa for the black and white. Seriously, black and white manga on paper (assuming a good print job by the publisher) looks FANTASTIC and is very good to read, whereas most color pages tend to look worse without extra care
Amazing video! I've always thought the coloured version was far inferior to the original B&W, and I'm glad I'm not alone. I even imported physical copies of all of Part 5 just to see Araki's art as originally intended. Really appreciate you making this video!
I prefer reading JoJo in colors because sometimes I can't understand what the hell is going on when a new stand power shows up or a weird scene is happening.
Part of what makes araki's work so amazing is his variation in colors and designs, even drawing characters in completely different outfits later on (I mean just look at his newer drawings of Jonathan and Joseph)
The fact that they made it daytime during Pucci and Dio's meeting without remembering that Dio is a vampire and can't be in sunlight is hilarious.

The colors in part 4 were what got me into the series and back into Anime after it went digital.

Yeah honestly I'm not enjoying the Wonder of U fight... I'm just not used to understand what goes on in an action packed b&w manga

I honestly don't like black and white, for other manga i genuinely understand things pretty well but for JoJo, a lot of the fights are pretty confusing and the colors help me figure out what's even goin on.
+1
No other part of the manga visually confuses me like part five...don’t get me wrong, the art is incredible, but araki’s use of tone and solid black in almost every panel along with the bold pen used to draw the backgrounds gives me a headache when the characters are fighting. The man in the mirror fight, for example, was awesome but trying to figure out what was happening was very tricky

I can attest that physical is better, as someone who's read chainsaw man on my phone and physically

They tend to be fully coloured.

I never really knew about this topic but I'm glad I watched this great video!
I'll take the pink tbh, the B&W/Blue look for Giorno's suit looks too similar to Josuke's getup and I want some variety.
Thats like saying The jotaro vs DIO fight should happen in daytime bc The Sky was White in The B&W version tbh
Araki intended his outfit to be pink. But Sheuiy bois messed it up.
@@benet3931 I think there's an obvious difference there. Leaving the night sky white is something many mangakas do in order to save ink; they can rely on readers to know it's nighttime based on context clues. It's far different from intentionally shading a character's outfit to be darker.

7:01 It's good that the anime shows this scene correctly, during the night.
He didnt say it was blurry, he says it looks blurry. This is not a mistake.
Edit: i believe his wording was "an almost blurry effect"
Not entirely. The anime doesn't look blurry (albeit definitely less detailed), because they use flats for coloring instead of color gradients.
Color gradients may be more realistic, but often make surfaces look softer than the linework may suggest. The color scans definitely look airbushed.
Absolutely agree with you in regards to B&W manga vs colored - I
see a lot of people nowadays complaining about how there are so few
colored manga, but what they don't seem to realize is that depicting
things in a grayscale fashion takes just as much skill, if not moreso
thanks to the pallet limitations. I often find fully colored manga dull
by comparison, or else too busy for my eyes to really appreciate. Plus,
having the manga traditionally in B&W makes the covers and
celebratory color pages feel more special.
I want Steel Ball Run and Jojolion in paper so much, but we never got jojo past DiU in my country

I bought some of the hard cover manga and holy fucking shit some of the art in it looks so fucking good in black and white
I came here when this video has 166k and hamon beat has 166k subscribers. That’s pretty cool
I loved the colouring especially part 6 and 7.one of my favourite parts of the colouring were the colours used for stands they look as of they glow. Best example for this would be Jolyne stand, the blue they use is actually beautiful and looks great in the coloured pages.
I believe in Black and white Wonder of u supremacy
I am Brazilian an bought a volume of Stardust Crusaders, and OMG this is absolutely beautiful, gorgeous
When you get your video in first few seconds of uploading
Amazing video! I've always thought the coloured version was far inferior to the original B&W, and I'm glad I'm not alone. I even imported physical copies of all of Part 5 just to see Araki's art as originally intended.
Really appreciate you making this video!
I prefer reading JoJo in colors because sometimes I can't understand what the hell is going on when a new stand power shows up or a weird scene is happening.
Part of what makes araki's work so amazing is his variation in colors and designs, even drawing characters in completely different outfits later on (I mean just look at his newer drawings of Jonathan and Joseph)
I read manga in black and white but i read colored superhero comics *ngl Araki’s choices of colors are bizarre i love it*
