Visiting Mt Rushmore was way way more spectacular that I anticipated.
I had the opposite feeling. I don't know why, but I was underwhelmed.
Hi Jeff and Sarah. I'm a Canadian from British Columbia and in 1979 my dad had a visa to work in Dickinson North Dakota. The summer of 1980 (I was 9 years old) we went on a tour of South Dakota and went to Deadwood and Mount Rushmore. My dad sadly past away shortly after this and we moved back to Canada, but I will never forget that trip we had. It is a memory that I cherish to this day. Love your channel and the great videos you make.
I’ve been there several times, the last time was in 2018. Also, the first time I went up in the air was in a helicopter much like the one you show here when I was 5 years old and I was hooked! Started my flight training at the NAS Lemoore AERO Club in 1975. Another awesome video! Thanks Jeff and Sarah!
Awesome video as always and with scenery like that one can hardly go wrong!!! I've been there 4 times in my life. I certainly hope you had a chance to go over to Crazy Horse Mt. as well, fabulous history and beautiful museum. Am very interested in native American culture. Every trip was more special than the last. Never met nicer people than in Custer. ( I hope thats what heaven is 👍 like.) Sure hope you two had as great a time as l did. Many more adventures. Years ago, on a long road trip from San Diego to Minneapolis, we stopped by Mount Rushmore. I was 13 years old at the time - the year was 2010. I vividly recall visiting Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, Wall Drug, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Visitor Center, and more. It just so happened we visited right in the middle of Sturgis. As we traversed South Dakota we were surrounded by thousands upon thousands of motorcycles all around us. It was quite the experience visiting Mount Rushmore and seeing the mountain for this first time, on the windy road approaching the monument. We have a photo of the sedan we drove, parked in the Mount Rushmore parking lot, surrounded by hundreds of motorcycles - it was hilarious. It was a fun and memorable trip. Your recent series of videos in South Dakota bring back many wonderful memories. I plan to take my wife there, we are newly married and are big fans of your channel. Both of us are big history buffs and road trips are a favorite thing we love to do.

Wonderful video! Mount Rushmore is absolutely worth a visit. You can’t actually see the mountain face when you park; you have to walk up to the observation area to see it and when I first arrived I was alongside a mother and her daughter. And the The girl commented “oh I thought it would be bigger than that“ The mothers response “ honey, everything in life is going to be like that“. 😂😅😊
That was my late fathers reaction when he visited The Statue of Liberty, we all laughed so much when he returned home to Ireland and told us that :)

Usually go every other year except when I was In the caribbean...going during the 4th takes some doing to get tickets but it is really a patriotic experience...
As the Blue Angles fly over...quite a show Jeff and Sarah if you can ever get tickets for the 4th, do it!....do not miss crazy horse!...the helo ride is the icing on the cake....I had a buddy who used to fly those hops...
Hi Jeff and Sarah, A few years back I visited Mount Rushmore at about 0700 before anyone else was there. It was cold, almost freezing! I did the stairs hike around the base with no one else around. It was fabulous. I have tried to explain how it was to many friends and family over the years and failed to have them understand. This video is the best I have seen, really gives a feel for what it is like. Thank You! After I left M R I went through Custer state Park. Animals are so used to people if you stop your car, they come right up to it. Sarah would have loved it!

I lost count of how much I learned in this episode! My family took a road trip from Milwaukee to Mt Rushmore in the mid 80s when I was about 10 years old. I can't wait to take my kids there someday, too! Thanks for this fascinating episode!

My wife and I visited first in 1985 and in 1994 and would go again in a heartbeat. My wife enjoyed sitting atop the amphitheater listening to Patriotic musics during 4th of July weekend......gave her chills!!!
In 2001 I got to see the Fourth of July fireworks there and it was very impressive as you well know. We had to wait all afternoon to save our seats though and it was hot!

The first time I went was in 1977. I've been there at least 2 other times. It's really changed over the years! I really like the visitors centers, gift shop and the restaurant! Mt. Rushmore is something else! And the ceremony they had at night where they lit it up was incredible! Thanks for sharing! 👍

You asked, Jeff...I'm an old man, now,...as a kid, I was with Mom & Dad on vacation ("out West"...from Chicago area)... Very early 60's, as I recall. Only viewpoint for visitors was ONE roadside pulloff "viewing area" for Mt. Rushmore, and it was small...only a few cars could squeeze in at a time. We heard they had expanded parking/viewing, years later...long after we had visited.
My best to you & Sarah...for all you two do...for all of us watching. Thanks so much for sharing. It's good to see all the improvements they've made at Rushmore. (I STILL want to go back and visit the "hidden room" behind the presidents' busts...back then, it was possible...if you made prior arrangements --- we didn't, because we didn't even know of it's existence.... Fantastic coverage of Mt Rushmore. Been there twice…once in 1959 as a child when we were moving from Maryland to California and returned again with my own children in 1989 on a trip to visit family in the Adirondacks in New York. We breezed through, got pictures and moved on. Wish now we had spent more time there. Thanks for covering this special monument!
I toured Mt Rushmore in October 2018. When entering, we were greeted with a mountain sheep. The team that worked on Mt Rushmore was very courageous.
Been to Mt. Rushmore many times. The last time was 2018. It was amazing to see in person every time.

My wife Bevie and I visited Mt. Rushmore on our way back to Manteca from Iowa in 2015. No photo can do justice to seeing it in person. During that stop we met 2 Iraq vets who rode there on their motorcycles from Mich. They took our picture for us and we took theirs. Ironically, we saw both of them in a video of a White House lawn party that W. held for vets that same year. They were still wearing their cycle gear. Small world. Love the videos from you and Sarah.

I have visited Mount Rushmore at three times in my life. First time as a child, second it's a teenager and third to share with my children. I think it's time to explore taking the grandchildren there. Thanks for a great video. It is certainly breathtakingly beautiful!
I have been to Mt Rushmore in the past 20 years 9 times. i lived in So Dakota at Ellsworth AFB from 67 to 71. I now live in Boston. I want to thank you for the wonderful Videos you produce and especially this one. Mt Rushmore is my favorite destination. The Black Hills are the very best in Family travel. thank you.

The last time I was there was in 1966. A lot more trees today and people. Plus, more exhibits today than back in the day.

I have been to Mt. Rushmore at least twice. Both times were special as they were both first time trips. The first when I was young in the 1980's and seeing it for the first time and then the second in 2011 for my husband and daughter to see it for the first time. So much has changed and I never knew about the extra things to see. We mainly saw the monument, visited the needles mountains and toured Jewel Cave as I was unaware of how many more vantages and learning opportunities were available. Thanks for letting us see your experience. It looks like it was a good trip!
To your question, we have Not been to this place ( yet ). I have seen many photos and videos but non have given me the feeling of what it must be like here. Your channel has always made to extra effort to give your viewers a fuller exsperiance. Thank you for enduring the extra work and pushing the limits of the heat of the day and the extra workouts at elevations to get the best shots. The sky view you took was a total bonus. 👍👀
Thank you! When I was a kid I always thought that the mountain faces looked west. Upon visiting I realized they are facing southeasterly. Sometimes my mental picture and reality collide when I visit places. I truly appreciate and enjoyed your comment!

As a child (in the 80’s) we went almost every year to Rushmore and Yellowstone and then down to Colorado Springs and over to dodge city to see family before coming home to Leavenworth Kansas. The older my sister and I got, the less we wanted to join in on those long car rides with mom and dad. But I do remember these vacations so well.
My wife & I visited about a month prior to your visit. We REALLY wish we had this video prior to our visit, although one of our favorite trips, we would have had a MUCH BETTER appreciation for what we were seeing! THANK YOU for this WELL DONE video!!
I've been 3 times, first in the late 50s, my snapshot memory is of a parking lot with viewing telescopes! Second time in the 60's, not much to remember except the thrill of looking out the window & being thrilled to see the monument as we drove around from the back. 3rd time was in 2015, when I took my 2 Grandson's to North Dakota, & I made a side trip to show them Mount Rushmore. Again, as the driver this time, waiting, waiting, finally rounding the corner & there they were! Wow, the changes to the park were unexpected. Mostly thrilled, and partly annoyed! We had limited time to spare, so made a quick tour of the museum, (the bathrooms!), the gift shop, before continueing north. I'm thankful you both splurged on the helicopter tour. That was special. I've done the helicopter up to the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska. We had headphones to listen, but no mics so couldn't ask any questions.
Amazing still. I've been there three times. We spread my Mom's ashes at Devils Tower the first time I went. First helicopter ride was when I was life-flighted to Omaha a few months ago. I am always eager and fulfilled watching your videos Jeff and Sarah!!! Thank You for all you do.

My family visited Mt. Rushmore in 1970-71 on our way to North Dakota to spend a week on my moms sisters farm. My mom was from North Dakota and her parents came here from Norway. Thank you for the video I didn’t know all the history on the carving!!
We go to Mt Rushmore everytime friends or family visit that haven't already seen it. I used to take juvenile correctional youth, on good behavior, to tour both Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monuments over a 4.5 year period. Surprisingly I've never tired of doing the occasional recurring tour with bonus locations not known to the typical tourist. 😊
July 1986 My parents decided to drive to Expo 86 Vancouver BC all the way from Delaware with my brother and I who, to this day, fight like Lisa and Bart Simpson. One stop among many was Mount Rushmore. 😀 Thanks for sharing
We have been there 3 times. Each time we noticed more detail and learned more about the location.
We did the helicopter tour also. Highly recommend that.
Keystone itself is an interesting town. Had a Prime Rib Sandwich there that is to die for.
That whole area is worth a week stay. We were there each time in September. Hardly any crowds and the room rates were a reasonable price for off season.
Thanks Jeff and Sarah for showing us this monument. I last saw it in 1970. I would see it again maybe after I get a new left knee. I have to be able to walk better than I do now. I had a quart can of Minnesota Linseed Oil just like that one in the case when I was a kid. When aged it was a wonderful oil. That helicopter ride is a different view of the monument. At the end of the ride I started to get some motion sickness. It was very real to me looking through your camera. I like Mount Rushmore alot more now that you have been to Crazy Horse to compare the two. The sculpture work on the Crazy Horse monument looks more crude than the work on Mount Rushmore. I could see that the Mount Rushmore presidents have much smoother facial features. Crazy Horse looks more and more like a monstrosity but hey the kids came third. I would love to be able to go up on the Crazy Horse sculpture and show the world what kind of work a third place human being can do. I would probably make the statue end up looking like Rodney Dangerfield.
Great job as usual and an excellent video. I haven't been there in over 26 years and would love to visit the Black Hills area again. I remember seeing it for the 1st time in 1981 with my parents on a rare family vacation and enjoying it.
Very enjoyable episode. I was first at Mt Rushmore in 1980. It was very different than when I took my children in 2017. I must say you and Sarah have testicular fortitude I lack for getting in a helicopter.

My family went there first time in summer of 1961 when I was 5 years old. I remember it fondly as my dad died February of 1962. It sure didn't look like it does today. Those evergreens were not that tall. Also went there with just my mother in 1976 and with my sister and brother and my sisters then boyfriend in 1979. Haven't been there since but would love to see it with all those changes. And maybe that helicopter ride too. Thanks for the memories.
I was there many, many years ago on a family vacation because my dad was raised in Hot Springs, SD. Of course, my visit was in the early 50's so the complex area was completely different. So thank you for another fantastic video and the trip down memory lane. Thank you, too, Jeff for always putting out first rate vlogs that I always look forward to seeing what/where you'll be next.
I've never been but always wanted to, there are documentaries and other videos out there I've watched, but never as up close and personal. I did learn some things I didn't know before, thank you very much. You did it again. Enjoy your life's out there people.
My parents went out west and to Mt. Rushmore on their honeymoon in 1952. The rock formations and views are so beautiful! Loved the views from the helicopter. I live through you and Sarah on these wonderful trips! I think I would need a bottle of that presidential wine to go on a gondola up to the Mt. The only family trip we took through South Dakota was in 1968 when I was ten. We did not stop but drove by on the highway. I was extremely car sick and could only raise my head up to see Mt Rushmore for a few seconds before I had to lay down in the back seat again. But I did experience it.
Love your videos. Yes visited Mt Rushmore when I was 13. After we left there we went to Corn Palace and Walls drug. I am 50 now and really wish to return. Thanks for the great videos and history. Stay healthy stay safe
My brother and I visited Mt. Rushmore a little over a week ago. My previous visit was some decades ago and I was impressed by the development of the grounds. Truly amazing. We visited the theater and museum and both were awesome and we learned a lot about the actual construction. Very interesting. I want to go back again and explore SW So. Dakota and the Badlands. Lots of history to take in. Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I was there in the late 1960s on a family trip. Looks like there have been a lot of changes since then. It would be nice to go back and see it again with the next generation of family.

I was there the summer of 1994. As a matter of fact, as I write this there's a huge chunk of beautiful rose quartz staring at me across the room right now that I picked up at a roadside stop near Keystone on that very trip. A lot seems to have changed, as you pointed out. I would go back again, but probably not as the main attraction. It would have to be "on the way," so to speak. Looking forward to your and Sarah's next adventure!

Love it every time I go! I wish every American could make the trip to see it. Sadly, when we went the locals said tourism was way down because of the cost of gas and everything else. It's sad what's happening to our U.S. economy! Hopefully that will change soon!

I visited Mt Rushmore as a child many many years ago. Hoping to go back and show my husband it. He has never seen it!
My family visited in 2018. We spent two days there. First we visited at night. I got to be honored as a military veteran during a nice ceremony that evening at the amphitheatrer. Then we came back the next morning and the sun was out. It was a beautiful time and someday I'd love to return. Also, we found a great restaurant called the Powder House, once used for storing blasting powder and bootleg liquor. I recommend it highly! Thanks for the interesting video.

I live in Sioux Falls, SD. The last time I went to Mt. Rushmore was a year and a half ago when I took my parents to see it for their first time. It was an awesome experience to spend it with them and my wife
I loved this video. I've always wanted to visit Mt. Rushmore ever since I first saw it featured on one of my favorite Hitchcock thrillers, North by Northwest. I was born a year after this movie's theatrical release, but I enjoyed the movie a few years later when MGM first released it for television distribution sometime during the 1960s. I was just a kid then. Now I'm 62. The majesty of Mt. Rushmore as captured by the movie (and by your video!) has always inspired me and still beckons me to go see this monument to our nation’s heritage someday.
I've driven somewhat close to Mt. Rushmore many times during my semi-truck travels on I-90 through Rapid City, but my trucking job has never given me enough time to see this amazing national monument in person. Maybe after I retire in a few years from now I can finally walk in your footsteps and enjoy Mt. Rushmore firsthand as you have done in your video. I can only imagine how special it was for both of you to visit. Thanks for posting this journey.

Stopped there briefly about 3 or 4 years ago, we didn't get to see all there is... Would love going back for a proper visit....and a helicopter ride...? What a lifetime experience!

We went in 1992 with 3 of our children. Ages 14,12 and 9. To this day I occasionally hear the trip referenced by one of us. Great time. Also this was a really nice video and so is the picture of you and Sarah by the helo.

Rushmore I the 1994. We were on way home to Minot North Dakota. We enjoyed MT Rushmore. Your video was great.
Jeff and Sarah, thanks again for another great history lesson. Our family visited Mt. Rushmore on August 21st this year. It was just one stop among many. We also visited Arches National Park, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Bryce Canyon, about 4,000 miles in all. Love the show!

I’ve lived in the central Valley of California, the Sacramento area and I’m now in the southern San Joaquin valley. I really enjoy all of your California history lessons and now even many other areas beyond.
I was first at Mount Rushmore when I was 2 in 1966, I’ve seen the changes over the years. I remember when the parking was free, it’s been some years since I’ve been at Mount Rushmore, native of South Dakota.
In 2003 I helped replace the pay phone signs from USWest to Qwest. I have a picture at sunrise with our two trucks in front of Rushmore.
Also the original theater there was full built with donations from USWest.

Visited there in '71 on a cross country trip. Pop didn't travel well so we didn't stay long. Great shot of the profile of Washington from the helicopter. A closer shot would have been awesome.

I remember my first time in a Helicopter I was 12. My Dad wanted to see the White Mountains in NH from the sky. Lol. I remember vividly my mom with her Rosary beads and holy water. 😃 Thankfully at 12 I had no fears. Since then I have loved flying Great video as always. Glad you took us along on your trip ❤️

I visited the monument in August 1971. I was very impressed. It appears as though much in the area around it has changed.

I’ve been able to visit twice and was and am in awe of the results of the lifelong labor and dedication of Borglum and his son. Their efforts have blessed this nation with a remarkable monument to four our our Presidents that will survive till time ends. It is a shame that he didn’t follow through with his idea of including Chief Red Cloud of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, especially considering that this monument is on land that was and is holy to Native Americans!

The helicopter ride looks like fun. I accompanied a friend and her parents on a trip from California to Nebraska when I was 13 or 14 years old. That would have been in the early 70s. One of our sight-seeing stops along the way was Mount Rushmore. That was pretty cool. We also saw the Crazy Horse Monument, which I enjoyed more. I would love to go again, but I'm sure that's not going to happen.

We visited a few years ago. The amphitheater was being renovated.
We explored the area and visited a petrified forest. Beautiful state.
Born at ellsworth afb. 1951 .lived there 5 years but was told we visited. On our way from New York to Japan we visited rapid city . Never been back
