    For those of you who are wondering why this is taking so long, remember that for a long time only ONE person was working on this. Then he had several children and had them work on it with him. This wasn't like Mt. Rushmore with the hundreds of workers and the government by their side. Crazy Horse Memorial is all donations from the people. I recommend going to see the site even if it is uncompleted you will support the building of this sculpture and you will learn so much.

    I was working for Phillips66 Oil Co. in Rapid City SD in 1974 and Korczak Ziolkowski was using our fuel and lubricants in all his equipment . I spent a day with him on the mountain and the evening at his home. He drove me all over the area in his jeep and we drank whiskey in his living room. His wife Ruth brought it to us straight, in water glass tumblers!! (after a day with no meals....ugh!) He was a wonderful guy, full of enthusiasm and loving life and his gigantic project. He knew that he would not live to finish the sculpture , and he said so. He hoped that his family and foundation would complete it someday. However, nearby Rapid City is the location of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology , one of the premier hard rock mining engineering schools in the nation. I studied Civil Engineering there in the years following my visits with Korczak, and expert geophysical scientists and mining engineers at the school had determined that the Crazy Horse sculpture could never be completed because the rock the mountain is comprised of is not monolithic or uniform and could never support the type of sculpture that Ziolkowski envisioned. I can clearly see that coming true in this video made 50 years after I stood on the top of the mountain with Korczak. There's been very little change or progress in 50 years, and what has been done bears only a passing resemblance to the models and drawings Ziolkowski made originally. Too bad - His was a magnificent vision , but the raw material just was not then, and never will be there to make it real.

    • @SilveniumTheDrifter
      @SilveniumTheDrifter 4 месяца назад

      I agree - there is a lot of enthusiasm there, but you can really see in the rock, that it's not solid enough for fine details or anything of the like. Even if the details had been gotten right, they wouldn't last for very long before something chipped or broken off.

Along the way we read someplace that the Crazy Horse monument was going to be completed someday. It's unfortunately not in my father's lifetime, but maybe in mine. My mother's mother was 100% native so I've been trying to get information from a friend about how he had a blood test to reveal ancestry. @ Speak for yourself. When I was a kid growing up in KS we had native american museums and a place I went to on a field trip was more than just a museum, it was a village that educated us on the ways of life for the indians and the "old west" history. I swear everyone thinks that what they are the only depiction of america. Native Americans were not demonized in history class. Yes we took the land a long time ago, yes most first world nations were once a land of some other people.
      If you know anything about history you know EVERY BIT OF LAND was once someone else's. All the way back to neanderthals and cavemen, and before that animal territories and land that was once covered by water before continents dispersed. Lack of education is a serious issue. Native Americans were different tribes who fought over land too. Mexico was once native americans taken over by spain. It's all a mess how we deal with our culture in the US nowadays, we only divide instead of be humble and learn.

They were NOT protecting anything from anyone, The Black Hills was/is their land according to treaties dating back to the 1800's and they want it back. In 1980 the United States Supreme Court awarded the Sioux tribes in the area 1.3 BILLION dollars which until today they refuse to take since the land is NOT FOR SALE. EVERY SINGLE YEAR that money is sitting in the US treasury earning INTEREST. The tribes can NOT come to any agreement...SHOULD WE TAKE THE MONEY OR NOT...right NOW is NOT...and why is that? The Sioux do NOT want Mount Rushmore returned to them, what the tribes want is a piece of the "pie" which the tourist dollars and some additional land...unfortunately no one is able to agree on anything. I would love to see this completed in my lifetime but I don't think it will be.
    I first found out about it from one of those Schoolastic magazines that kids used to order books from back in the 70's and remember just being blown away and awe inspired by the sheer size of the monument.
    I always swore, and still do, that if I ever won the lottery I would donate a TON of money to help get this project finished.

    As a Native myself, I do not think Crazy Horse would have in anyway felt honored by this stone carving of him. He fought fiercely to defend Pah Sapa (The Black Hills) from the invasion of gold prospectors and soldiers into his sacred country. He would of tried to stop those that wanted to destroy the mountian and tear into his Mother Earth's breast to create the idols of the white men. He would have wanted the moutian untouched, and to remain the way it was. Plus, there were never any photographs of Crazy Horse taken because he would never allow it.
