Inconsistent Flights on SriLankan Airlines - What Went Wrong?

- I traveled on SriLankan Airlines from Bangkok via Colombo to Dubai. This is a video reporting my latest SriLankan Airlines flight experience.
At Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, many shops and lounges are currently closed, many airplanes are parked and the airport is very quiet. SriLankan Airlines Business Class passengers can use the Miracle Lounge before the flight.
The flight to Colombo from Bangkok is operated by A321. Flight time was 3 hours. A full lunch was served. Check out the seat, cabin, food, and service on this short sector.
I transited Colombo and used the Serendib Lounge of SriLankan Airlines. It has a good amount of food but the lounge is very dated. It needs an upgrade.
The next flight to Dubai was on SriLankan Airlines A330-300 with individual Business Class seating. However, the food and service were let down and inconsistent with my previous flight. At the end of my flight, I gave my verdict on my latest SriLankan Airlines experience.
I received a lot of fans requesting me to make a vlog on SriLankan Airlines. I've flown SriLankan in 2011, 2012, 2016 but this time the experience was not as great as it was previously. I have to stress that is based on my own experience from my flights. Hope SriLankan can work on these shortcomings. Pls let me know which other airlines you're interested to see a vlog on? Over a 1/4 of all pilots in Pakistan hold fake licences or cheated in their final exams, PIA had found and fired many pilots in their fleet because of this problem according to bbc news

Really disappointed about your Experience with Sri Lankan. a few years back airline was managed by emirates currently managed by the Sri Lanka government. due to some bad methodologies and weak management, this may happen. but currently, Airport renovation and expansion going on. But Kindly request you to visit Sri Lanka and explore some local country experiences with nature and cultural experiences. However thanks to you for accepting our requests and trying Sri Lankans. 😔😔😔 I apologize for all Sri Lankan (country) fans 🙏🙏

I flew Sri Lankan in January 2022 from Mumbai to Sydney via Colombo. I had a great experience with them. The transit in Colombo was smooth. I love Sri Lanka. We should all stand with Sri Lanka at this time. In fact, we should support the national carrier by flying them so that their revenue is stabilized and they can work on improving their hard product and airport facilities #indiastandswithsrilanka #srilankaissafe
Thanks Sam for the feed back. Our national carrier is recovering faster compared to airlines in the south Asian region. Hopefully in the coming years our airline will gain its reputation much better than before. Cause srilankans always comes back strong.

This is a very good episode, the thing I noticed most is that the employees know the service is subpar. They probably hear it every day. But, that doesn't make it their fault, they can only provide the customers with the tools provided to them.

We are very pleased to be back in Sri Lanka on a Sri Lankan Airline flight. The current epidemic situation has weakened our country to some extent. We try hard to get rid of it. You have pointed out that our airline has a lot of shortcomings.

I travelled on SriLankan Airlines a view times from Kuala Lumpur via Colombo to frankfurt and back in business class. Like the long-haul business class with the flatbed and hate the regional business class with only the recliners, the food, service, and the price was reasonable. A new terminal is being built in Sri Lanka and you will be able to see it by 2023.Due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka , it seems that the consequences have come to the airline as well, and I hope the government will do it's job to get rid of this situation.I really enjoyed this one ❤

Thanks for sharing this video, Hope UL management sees this video as this has to be taken on a serious note, as we all know Sri Lankan airline is known for not only for friendly crew and service on board but for cleanest as well. They need to upgrade their lounge and need to upgrade with new Airbus as well.

Flown SriLankan many times (2018 and prior). Longest flights to/from Delhi and Beijing. It was less inconsistent then. Largely good memories/service/food. The Colombo lounge was sadly the same as now and often overcrowded. The terminal always chaotic, claustrophobic and not good overall. I've even stayed the night in the terminal 'hotel' (quarters). Duty-Free once sold me 750ml bottle of Belvedere that had been (previously and cleverly) opened and cut with water. Many people on edge but basically trying.
Finally SAM your re legit doing a review rather than a PR SHOW....I wish you could do unannounced journey and see how they behave, anyways you are famous so they will recognise you...still try it.

I agree with Sam. Need big improvement on this airline.As a ex catering service employee,catering was in high standard under Thai airways.WON THE MERCURY AWARD FOR catering when they managed. Political influences are the main reason to face this situation. Airlanka catering was the best and profitable organization in srilanka at that time...4 months bonus every year to all grades/free medical for all familily/free meals/free transport/free uniforms/staff get together part for all family in Five star hotels/Air tickets for family..much more....present situation is ...up to you...8 grams gold ring for all those who not utilize Sick leave and casual leaves as encourage staff...

Good to know you came to Thailand! TG is under restructuring following the bankruptcy, the fleet size is down to 30-something aircraft, from 70-something. Hope it can recover as the world starts to open up.
I am a big fan of TG until 2010s, TG was the big 3 in Asia among CX/SQ. I sincerely hope TG will get back!

I had been on SriLankan only for one trip back in 2013, the flights themselves weren’t all that memorable but it was my honeymoon trip to Maldives. The real fun was the Twin Otter seaplanes from Male to the resort island.
As Thai people, I hope to see TG come back to operate and to be proud of Thailand but for myself I didn't see light from darkest of TG.

You did a great job Sam. I think management of Sri Lankan air line can take lot of insights out of this. Sri Lankan management should focus more on cleanliness and food quality. I suggest management to do some repetitive qualitative research studies on the fleet, service and user experience mainly.

Hello sam chui,I use to watch your videos of flying and you shared airline experience which ia most fascinating and I become motivated to travel in business class but as a student it is really difficult however i got business class ticket luvkily from Pakistan to Malaysia through srilankan airline today and I flied from karachi to colombo it was very good experience staff is so friendly food is so yummy.I hope it will be fine from colombo to kuala lumpur also

Sri Lankan Airlines are usually the best, it is Covid that had knocked over the usual very hospitable service that they provide. They always provide beyond exceptional service and let my mum take an extra 9 kg oh hold luggage for free while she was travelling! Next time you are in Sri Lanka, you should visit the area of wattala which is about 28 mins drive from the airport, it is beautiful

Yes, this pandemic has not left any airlines exempt of problems, in this video self look how many planes Thais Airways has grounded and many of them will go back again to the skies. The situation is really bad, but i hope they will overcome this storm.

What I really love about them, is there hospitality, It maybe dated, but till date they have managed to keep their planes trouble free, and maintenance is there priority, your criticism is highly valuable, and it does seem the smallest things like having sanitizers and having a better palate for an meal, they may gain more customers.
I remember the days, it was in 1996, when Air Lanka flew from Colombo to LHR via Zurich (Airbus 340).

After all, Sri Lanka is an island, the population just does not rely on air travel. So, just get me there is the theme The luxury and sex appeal of a brand like Emirates is really hard to duplicate. I flew with the male cabin service manager and he’s the best in Srilankan airlines 👌🏻
I flew Sri Lankan in 2014 during my honeymoon. It was BOM-CMB followed by CMB-MLE, MLE-CMB and finally CMB-BOM. The BOM-CMB-BOM was a A320 operated route whereas the CMB-MLE-CMB was a A340 operated one.
The A320s are not the most comfortable and with Sri Lankan it was a really terrible experience. The service wasn't too great either. Great Asian hospitality.
However the A340 was something different. Luxurious and grand. The service was fantastic too.
It's very sad to see so many airlines go through such hard times during the pandemic (me having worked in one airline too) but as they say every cloud has a silver lining...

They have a lot of catching up to do if they want to be more competitive in this lucrative industry. The uniform is old the airplane is outdated food is like made 3 days ago and the hygiene is terrible. Its sad. I hope they can renounce from this.
I think the best of this airline is the people. The hardware may be tired and old however i would not mind if you have a great people experience. The german guy just did a video about the same airline and it is exactly the same. After having watched both videos i would be more than happy to fly with sri lankan. Great video.

I think it just the budget cuts due to the present condition.. I could be wrong.. But small Airlines are just struggling to get by.. To keep flying.. Its very rough market now. Especially small Airlines..

With TG's A330, I doubt you will see it again, as they are retiring it due to company restructuring. Such a pity, as it is one of my favourite aircraft type.

As I fly regularly from London to Colombo return on economy class with mainly Sri Lankan and sometimes Qatar Airways, I can summaries the positives and a negatives of Sri Lankan Airlines
Positive
1~ Excellent Safety record with No fatal crashes, so your in safe hands
2~Excellent and friendly Cabin crew always walking around rather disappear mid flight
3~Tasty and above average food
4~ good selection of onboard duty free items for sale
5~ flight are rarely delayed and near always on time
Negatives
1~ Fairly old planes (A330-300) with worn off or torn seats are common
2~Sometimes cabins are not properly cleaned or deep cleaned before flight
Hello there, would u recommend Sri lankan?? I am planning a trip there in May, flying business... Woukd u say they are good, or pay a lot more and use Emirates or Qatar
I thought they have A350-900 in their order list? Maybe they need to overhaul all their seats in Economy and Business Class and fleet. From A330-200 change it to A330-900neo.
Unfortunately, many of the airlines have no option but to degrade their services. As an expat living abroad, I have to take ANA flight going back and forth between Japan-India but their service have become more and more inconsistent (ANA’s service have been inconsistent even before covid19). I’m guessing their “recent” inconsistency is coming from cost-cut and also government restrictions.
