If I had to have one Martin only, it would be this! More specifically my HD28V (‘09). I’m glad you brought up that they are great for finger picking too, got that scalloped bracing , making it more responsive. Thanks, another great vid, great guitar, and great playing.!!
Right on! The HD-28V is a outstanding HD guitar! We've had a few through and they're just a little better than the others! Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Had one delivered a day or so ago, which I bought on a whim on Reverb. Hard to put it down. It's a 2021 model. Better than advertised. I've had a number of nice boxes over the years, but this one's particularly cool. Hadn't tried one before because I'm a lefty and they just aren't around in stores. Anyway, so, so responsive, quick and clear. Doesn't ever get muddled or break up and just happily bounces back at you playing-wise no matter how soft or hard you hit it. Real pleasure to play - Norman Blake to Jimi Hendrix. And did I say it's friggin' loud.
Sounds like you made a great choice. Enjoy!
Amazing sound for a new guitar, sounds clearer and brighter than the 2017 HD-28 to me
I agree, the lutz spruce does seem to have more clarity than sitka
Such an amazing sound, especially given its brand new
That’ll be insane once played in
too right, on ya Mitch!
I thank you for the Neil. Much appreciated, as are you!
Will play more for you in the future. Thanks, John!
@@studio1vintageguitars Play whatever you enjoy. I have not been disappointed.
Great video. I mostly play fingerstyle, but like to flat pick and strum occassionally, so its good to see and hear fingerstyle on a dread. I'd love to see a similar video with a D-18. Thanks, cheers
Thanks for listening and thank you for sharing. We have a bunch of D-18 videos 6 - 18 months ago that you can check out.
I knew that was Final Fantasy before you said it. Triggered my memory’s!
Have Martin finally ditched the 1 11/16" nut width on the dreadnoughts and gone to a more sensible 1 3/4" or is this a special case?
I think 1 11/16 was 'ditched' awhile back. All HDs we have had through at 1 3/4, 1 11/16 rarer it seems.
Good demo! Great guitar. Nice songs.
Thanks a lot!
If I purchase a new HD28 in 2024, will it have Lutz spruce instead of Sitka?
Nick doesn't know for sure but likely Lutz, that's what we have been getting from the supplier. Perhaps American dealerships are getting Sitka still. The lutz guitars we are getting are quite special. Nick still drools over the OM-42 we recently had.
cant decide between this and d35
Tough choice! You can't wrong with either really. It all comes down to your preferred sound
I've owned this guitar for a number of years. I like it. But I must say that, more frequently than not, it's a bit too "thick" for my liking. If it was just a bit brighter, with a bit more bite, I think it would be perfect. One review I watched said this guitar sound "compressed". Maybe the standard d28 would have been a better option for me. I don't know.
I think these new Lutz spruce HD-28s are much brighter than the earlier sitka top, they have a great clarity that I find more impressive with every brand new Martin we get in. A 'compressed' sound from a Martin could indicate over-humidification or a fresh guitar that hasn't been broken in. As for your guitar, try casing it for a few days and only play it in the mid-afternoon, if it's spring / summer where you are. Humidity levels and a service may remedy your situation.
I have a 2017 Reimagined series D-28 standard. My friend bought the HD-28. I’ve been really wanting to compare them side by side. He lives too far away unfortunately. One thing I’ve noticed w my D-28 is humidity has a drastic effect on the tone. If it’s a rainy day and I go outside in the summer gets really dark and mellow sounding. Almost like a jazz box. If it’s a low humidity dry day…it sounds deep and woody w nice crisp highs.
It took about a year before mine didn’t sound like mud, I know a large % of that is me but it sounds a lot brighter now that it’s worked in and I case it all the time I think it likes the case. It’s becoming my favorite.
80/20 strings will brighten up a HD28 a bit. Especially Elixer 80/20 nanowebs
Just bought one today
Hope you love it!
Thank you I grew up with a D28 and sold it. I've been playing the d18 for the last 18 years semi-professionally. But everybody's dream guitar if they know anything is an HD 28. Even you fine fellas over there in New Zealand know that:)
Best dreadnaught going!
Agreed!
