Brother - I have just bought this guitar today. I’m a 15 year beginner and I feel this guitar is always going to be better than me and I feel like all the gear no idea now. I didn’t want to spend that much but after playing it I was sold. I tried the Hummingbird but there was no comparison for me. After watching your mastery I feel more so that way but man way to sell what this guitar can do. Incredible. Love it. And it will only sound better in 10 years when I can do it some justice 😅 🙌🏽
Hey Brother! You've got yourself a great guitar, I'm happy for you! You're doing it justice by playing it, it's all about the fun of it :) Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it.
I want to buy HD28e but don't have money. I came down to D16e even then it doesn;t seem possible because i can;t spend 2k. Martin;s are very expensive but i really wish i own one someday
Congratulations! Excellent review. I wish you had played in the CEO 7 that I bought last summer. I love the chunky necks. I have a D-18GE for about 20 years and it is better every day. Great song choice for this.
great job at getting across how important it is to connect and develop a relationship with an instrument. finding a guitar you can truly express yourself through is a very beautiful and rewarding thing. hats off to you for making this great video :)
Important to note on the hd28. The guitar plays completely different when changing string gauge. That boomy bass is most prevalent with 13 gauge. Have owned an HD28 for 10 years and its a different animal when changing gauges
Great demo.I really enjoyed it.I had a D-42 back 15 year's ago, sure wish I would have kept it.I'am thinking of getting one of these.Love the alternate tuning's ,I'll never forgot my amazement when someone showed me how to play Black Mountain Side in DAGDAD.Suddenly,it all made sense and sounded so huge.
I have a question? Do you have a humidifier in your room there? W I was recommended to get one so I did a evaporative Vortex humidifier. It helps my my drums too and my piano has a damp chaser installed so it doesn’t seem to affect that. And what is the proper % we want in this type of room for all your guitars?
Hi SC515, yes we ran a commercial dehumidifier in off hours and a smaller domestic dehumidifier in shop hours; maintaining 50-55% humidity - it was an older wood brick building so a little drafty. We run a large domestic in our new store 24/7. There are a lot of variables for ideal humidity, if you live in a very cold or hot dry climate keep you humidity higher around 50%, if you live in a humid climate 50-55% is ideal.
Appreciate the playing. Just bought a hd28 and awaiting its delivery. Owned a Martin OM for decades. Great guitars, great company. Despite what you can pay for a guitar from private builders, they're all copies of Martins and Gibsons.
@@studio1vintageguitars I did,. HD28 is like wow, and I'm used to higher end boxes. Very loud and super quick and clear, Stays in tune and great in open tunings, Really great guitar at the price point for a professional guitar player or an enthusiast,. Can hardly put it down. Played a few upper mid-range knock-offs claiming similar woods, designs and whatever. Not even close.
I was listening to PRS SE A60E. And would like to watch a comparison video maybe with Martin but couldn’t find one. After watching this video, I could easily tell the difference in tones.
I bought my HD-28V back in 2002, and it's a 2002 model. It's the best steel string guitar I've ever played. Absolutely outstanding guitar. A bit different than this one. Mine has a through saddle.
glad to hear it! We don've a re-imagined in stock, but based on the D-45 Reimagined we had, I say it would be lightly braced compared to the standard HD-28, little more volume and projection with an easier response to the players touch. If we get one in we'll do a comparison!
To me this is what a guitar should sound like, I'm only a mediocre guitar player but would be tempted to buy one, except I have read that it's "normal" for the binding to come loose on these - is this an issue you have encountered?
This how they should sound! it'll sound better every day you play it and you'll improve through the joy of playing it. Binding issues can occur on older models, we haven't seen it on the newer ones, easy fix if it happens.
Hi! I recently bought HD28 after listening to a lot of reviews. I like the tone and resonance a lot, but when I play some notes using my thumb, it just dies out very untimely, almost sounds like a thump. It is prominent on E notes and other notes closer to it on the lower strings, like 12th fret on 6th string, 7th fret on 5th string and 2nd fret on 3rd string. What is it? Could it be fixed any way? I also have same problem with another guitar I own called Merida SPOMCES with solid cedar top, but it is mostly lower G notes and notes around it. I spent a fortune (for me at least) on HD28, but I am a bit disheartened with it. The problem is I got it through a friend in the USA here in another side of the world, and I can't go back to the store to check if it was only my guitar's issue. A luthier here told me about Merdia that it happend because of high resonance of the note and the top just dampens it. Could be the same with the HD28 too? 😢 I would appreciate your any thoughts about it.
The HD-28 is an exceptional instrument and with a fresh setup and control humidification you might have your issues remedied. I doubt your guitar is defective, Martin meticulously check their instruments, and there aren't 'bad ones'. Keep your guitar is it's case, try keep the humidity it is in close to 50% and have it setup if it hasn't had one since new or recently.
I have this HD28 Adirondack. I want to add a strap button and also new tuner knobs in gold. Any suggestions for the best brand to go with? So gold open or closed best? Maybe knobs not more than 150 as I am not buying 250 dollar knobs. Thanks for your advice Ryan
Hello there my RUclips friend. Bought a HD28 today in Holland. (TFOA) -A used one from 2022. Nothing changed since 2022 on the HD28 correct? Should be same as the 2024/2025?
I disagree, John, Dreadnaughts are not just built for flatpicking. Martins in general are desgined to played which every way the musician wants, Michael Hedges proved that. There's a long list of other great players that furthered the scope of the Dreadnaught by developing compositions using fingerstyle. Come down to the shop sometime and I'll show you how a dreadnaught can really be played!
Great playing man, and a wonderfull presentation of a quality instrument from Martin. Thom
Did NOT expect to come here and find some System of a Down on a Martin HD-28 play through 🤘🏼
Yoo! glad you liked it, will do some more!
Love the Areal Boundries!! Excellent HD28 demo!

Just bought a lefty HD 28 happy days 😊
Thank you, enjoy your excellent guitar!
Great looking and sounding guitar - and your playing is exquisite Nick! Thanks as always
Cheers, Mark! Recording new videos right now! Thanks for watching
Nice short piece at 2:54, well done! I bought a 000-18 recently but traded it for a beautiful used HD-28 and couldn't be happier. Great review!
Cool, thanks!
Martin's standard neck shape is a Low Oval contour. Good playing in the Michael Hedges' tune.
Modified Low Oval with High Performance Taper (to be exact.) 😊
Being an authorized Martin Dealer, that's a big deal, and since you love Martins already, WOW:)!!! Nice video!
Thanks, Robert! We're stoked be on the Martin team

Thanks for sharing. 25.4 scale martins are perfect for open tunings and the Dread is a perfect candidate for low opening tunings.
There are some players that just bring a smile to my face as soon as they start playing. Earl Scruggs is one. You’re one now too!!!!
Excellent review as always. Michael Hedges, PJ, Zep, and Rage😍😍
Thanks, Nate!
Just got one in last Saturday. Oh my. Beyond my expectations to say the least! Great playing the man. 🎶
Thanks & Enjoy!

It’s a really good guitar: so much depth and sustain.
Agreed.

Glad you liked the video!
Are you guys able to add/install a strap button on these?
Yes, we can have that arranged if you'd like.
Excellent guitar playing skills. Planning on picking up one of these bad boys soon!
thanks, mate! Enjoy your Martin :)

@@studio1vintageguitars That they are. Especially after being played for 20 years. Happy holidays to you too.
I really rally enjoyed your presentation. Thanks for sharing. What "all-round" strings do you recommend for a non-agressive playing style?
Thank you, you're welcome! I recommend the Martin Retro Monel strings for a more vintage tone, or Martins SP strings
Amazing playing !!!
Thanks, Steve!
I have this Martin guitar model for about 1 year now and love it. Any comments on a comparison to the Martin D28 Re-imagined please?
glad to hear it! We don've a re-imagined in stock, but based on the D-45 Reimagined we had, I say it would be lightly braced compared to the standard HD-28, little more volume and projection with an easier response to the players touch. If we get one in we'll do a comparison!
HI Nick I just bought an hd 28. I am in Canada. It cost with tax 5500.00 What do they go for down under? By the way great vid.
Hey, thanks! Our dollar is similar, they range from 5-8k here. Enjoy your great guitar!

I would want that in a short scale model.
Music Villa in Bozeman often has short scale dreads. Expensive but they have them.

@@softsouthernknight Would love to see and hear that one!

Go for the waverly or gotoh tuners. Waverly is more in with the Martin aesthetic
Great video. How durable is a finish on this guitar?
Very!
Love the guitar, the player, and the Kiwi accent!
Thank you good sir!

John Faheys "Last Steam Engine Train"

HD28 or D18 if you could only have one?
That's a tough one, in this case I would have to go with the HD28
