PROPAGATE and GROW BUSHY POTHOS. Fix LEGGY POTHOS. SOIL vs WATER rooting Epipremnum Aureum.

  • Today we're talking about how to fix leggy Pothos that get scraggly with long sections of vine that do not have any leaves. The plants are still healthy but not looking great. We love big bushy Pothos and have a palpable predilection for periodically practicing proper Pothos plant propagation and politely pruning pretty petite perfectly potted Pothos primarily for the purpose of play on this precious planet. With that said!, we will repot this leggy and root bound Marble Queen Pothos and create big bushy beautiful plants. Check it out!

    Pothos is considered toxic. If you've got a naughty pet that like to eat your plants make sure to keep them out of reach!

    Thanks, Herb! I am excited for my very leggy pothos to get a makeover! In the past when a vine got too leggy, I would cut the whole thing and take the clippings to a new pot (after water propagating for a while) but I am excited that I can potentially just stick the clippings back in the pot and grow a fuller, happier plant. :)

    This has been the only plant I can keep alive. I bought a long established plant from a nursery and it went from the floor to ceiling and now it is very leggy. I NOW realize I should have cut it back. I was afraid to haha. So the original plant - it had thick roots that were tightly attached to the dirt. Did you cut from the top of the vines laying flat and tightly sticking to the soil or actually cut the vine and pull the established root out? I hope that makes sense. Wish I could add a photo to explain. and congrats on keeping that plant alive for 8 years in general and without a drainage hole!

      I just cut the vines. I left the pruned back part with the established roots pretty much intact. They can also form new roots anywhere along the internode so if the vine is laying on the soil, it will likely root. Generally they bounce back pretty quickly from root pruning so you should be ok either way.

    Thank you for the video and also thank you for not waffling, but you went straight to the point. I love pothos! Mine are very leggy and I wasn't sure what to do to make the plants look good. Thank you again for a very informative video. Greetings from England xx

    Nice. I need to get one of these. It’s weird how the root and leaf nodes are so close. It must be some sort of hardcore survivalist function

    • @HerbandRoots

      These are great for spots that get very little light where other plants won't make it. In the right conditions they are super invasive and can root all along the internodes.

      I like that look! I've seen that in some of your vids. That is perfect for a low maintenance "living wall". I think the one in your kitchen is going to eat your fridge soon!😄 We had them growing out of a fish tank and the roots grew really thick and the fish would swim through them. Pretty cool looking and kept the nitrate levels etc in the water at really good levels.

      I even had a tray under it to catch the run off 😂. I don't have a strict schedule to water but I do tend to err on the dry side of things so maybe once or twice a month.

      I have a 60+ year old pothos that is in a large ceramic pot with no drainage. Does just fine if you make sure to let it dry out a little bit between waterings. (you start to know when they need water, the leaves start to droop and get a little less green). Other than completely chopping this monster back every 5-6 years and adding some dirt now and again, a shot of fertilizer if I remember.... they are very easy-going plants. Some of the vines on mine are close to 20 feet long. Hard to know for sure because I have wrapped it around so many times! haha

      @@lettyrodrz9940 I live in Upstate New York, so probably pretty similar to you. Cold and dry right now. My pothos still continues to grow, although at a much slower pace than in the summertime. I will say, that even though the pot has no drainage, it is a soil and sand mixture, with small pebbles at the bottom of the pot. Even though the plant is huge, I give it about 2-3 cups of water only, maybe every 2-3 weeks. Like I said, not on a strict schedule like my other plants. I mostly judge my watering schedule on how she looks. When her leaves start to look a little less green than normal and feel a little less stiff, I check the dirt. If it feels dry I give her a drink. But again, 2-3 cups of water for a pot that is about 15 inches across. I definitely water on the cautious side.

    Add around two minutes you show a pot full of leafless stems but don’t explain anything about it much. Did it grow a whole new plant? Many leaves just from bare stems? It was my understanding that bare stems do not ever start to vine again, and so I have always tossed that part out when pruning a vine that has growth only at the end. I really love propagating these plants so if a leafless stem will actually grow something, let me know please! Thanks

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  4 года назад +1

      Yes! You totally can. What you saw there was an experiment I had going from the bare vines. I am growing new bushy plants from 1 or 2 nodes of a leafless length of vine. That way you can make new plants instead of tossing it! I am actually making a separate video on that which I will post soon. I wanted to let it bush out a bit more to show the results before I post it. Check back soon for more info!

      @@cmstrauss514 Make sure to keep track which end of the vine was toward the growing tip and to plant that end up. I mixed a couple up and planted them upside down and those didn't make it. If you root in soil keep it lightly damp but not wet. It will take it a week or two to grow stronger roots that are actually taking up water for the plant. Good luck!!

    How often did you water after propagating?

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  3 года назад +1

      Keep the soil damp but not wet. Just enough moisture to set up an environment for root growth. At the start of the propagation it is easy to overwater since the plant is not taking up water through a large root system yet. If you notice the leaves getting droopy you can mist them.
