The mom of the Ong family is a prime example of "only know how to talk". "Ya, you are enjoying, but at what cost?" goes to her as well. She quit her job thinking it can cut cost and bring convenience to her and her children, but we can all clearly see that it is not objective, in fact a little one-sided and this issue is the a big part (of the root) of the problem. Her husband quit his previous job due to medical issues and ended up with his current one, even enjoying it (rare) and wanting him to switch into another better paying job (tbvh at this age), we all know it is very hard. Next, she rejects whatever her children wants when they were doing grocery shopping but didn't even think twice about things she wanted and this action really upsets me, but I'm not surprised since many parents act this way lol. Another issue. homeschooling is definitely not working well in this case, in this family. Evidently, with 2 (or is it 3, i forgot) children retaking PSLE twice just to pass, it is saying something. Passing shouldn't even be this difficult at this level. I just feel like the mum is pushing the responsibility to her husband and we can all see he has a lot to bear already. She can help by doing some part-time jobs as well but, well she is enjoying right, but at what cost?

The husband has kidney stones and gout and whining like a bitch over it.
The father needs to man up and get another two jobs for the kids.
Who doesn't have kidney stones and gout ?
Kidney stones and gout is not exactly TERMINAL illness.
The mother is WORKING full-time for the kids and husband and not getting PAID for it.

    The Ong Family.
Obviously homeschooling is not working out as you can see even the mother said the kids usually pass the PSLE on the second attempt. Seriously just to pass? Do you know how easy to pass each subject? Scoring is the difficult one. If your kids can't even pass means something is not working out. The mother is ruining the kids' life.
They need friends, invaluable experience, be discipline and take care of their own belongings. They need holistic education (esp. mother tongue) and not just coop at home and watching online guides.

    • @slaiyfershin
      @slaiyfershin 5 лет назад +11

To pass PSLE as a homeschooler they are tagged to 30% of the cohort's marks. So it actually isn't 'just pass' in the traditional sense of 50%. But yes, she basically is setting them all up in life to be a confirmed N-Level kid since they all almost definitely 'retain' a year doing PSLE twice and finishing at the same age as an N-Leveler.

In all honesty, his wife isnt as independent as she should be. As a wife and as a mother. U don't just look at your husband struggle and ask him to change to a better job. Have sympathy for your husband, don't just have sympathy for yourself. Allow your kids to school at a government school and get financial help for school, shop at the market or get cheaper alternatives for food. Please don't think about what you want but think about the needs of your husband and children. Pity your husband from struggling. Morning till night, stress, worrying. I kind of don’t really understand the mum in the Ong family, when her kids reminded her that coffee was expensive, she decided to buy it saying she need it ( which was still not too bad as some adults may just be really tired ) but when her kids asked for chocolate milk she rejected them but got what she want from I believe a sea food fridge ( and it was 13 dollars, of course more than a carton or two chocolate milk ). Next moment, she doesn’t see that she could possibly get a part time or so to consider things at her view and immediately told the dad “you are enjoying, but at what cost” which is kind of like saying that it was his issue which it wasn’t

The Ong family is so pitiful. Their children are home schooled and have missed out on the invaluable experience of fostering friendships and camaraderie with classmates - something that all other Singaporean school kids get to experience. Mrs Ong should go out to work. The extended driving family holiday in the USA was also a money waster. So what if it was an experience of a lifetime? When they return to Singapore, they still need to face the realities of living in expensive Singapore. I feel that the Ongs have misplaced priorities.

I don’t understand why Mrs Ong doesn’t want to go out and get a job. She shouldn’t be so selfish and put the pressure on her Husband to quit what he enjoys, she herself is also putting her ridiculous desire of homeschooling her children at the expense of their family’s finances. Doesn’t she know that eating out costs less than $50 for the whole family? Saves so much compared to doing your own cooking. Moreover, music lessons are just ridiculous. Their priorities are not right in focusing on these lessons rather than sending them to schools and teaching them life lessons such as interacting with others. How would their children survive the real world next time?

He's 18, make him use his allowance (I assume he has some cause he's no longer homeschooled) to get it. He can work part time too. No teenager *needs* one which is that expensive. There are so many good ones on the market for less than $1k even.
Why did the mother not tell him that and yet rejects her other son's wish for a parrot for a birthday gift? The imbalance is ridiculous.
Also, since the younger ones have to retake their PSLE again in order to pass, goes to show the homeschooling thing is not really working out. And flute / music lessons????? WHY, WHEN MONEY IS TIGHT? I'm just confused.

I apologize but Mrs. Ong has misplaced priorities. She spends most money on her children music lessons, but a violin, piano, and flute cannot unlock a degree or a job. Intelligence is more valuable than “talent”, and the mother does somehow not acknowledge that. I struggle to understand how they can spend so much money on music lessons but cant be bothered to buy a stable bed instead of a mattress on the floor, more devices, etc, but for some reason are choosing to decline a pet, yet spend even more money on coffee and such. I am not a parent by any sort, but if youre going to have SIX CHILDREN, you should bother getting a job and rethinking which expenses to invest on. Talent cant buy a PSLE pass or college degree, nor beds or computers for your CHILD’S JOB. Please get a job instead of telling your husband to get ANOTHER ONE, honestly embarrassing. End of story.

Additionally, when shopping insisting buying the things you want without consideration of the burden on your husband.

Good gawd the kid who wants a parrot...seriously? I'm a vet nurse and I can tell you that's a super bad idea. That kind of parrot is not a beginner bird for a beginner 😅, also your family is financially struggling. ALSO when birds get sick...they don't just go to a regular dog and cat vet...they need an EXOTIC veterinarian. Exotic medicine is expensive, I can only imagine how much it is in Singapore 😅😅😅. And another thing, parrots live 50-70 years, u can't just give them away once you're tired of them.

You can't accept Macbooks that are cheaper and subsidised because they are "lower end" and not as "powerful"? My parents each earn 5 figures a month, I'm their only child, and a student at a local university, but I'm totally fine and in fact even excelling at my computer-related degree with my $1500 "lower end" Acer laptop. Maybe people who buy subsidised laptops aren't as "desperate" as you think; they're just not as ignorant and know how much and where to spend their money. You can have the best resources but not be able to maximise them. Perhaps you should consult your "desperate friends" and brush up on your own skills instead of blaming your inability on your mom's unemployment - although that is itself a problem.

This kid seems bright and.obviously done his research to decide on the machine, however his family might no be able to.afford a 3k machine, so if he wans it he will need to come up with his own.money at at least half of the cost
