    ==============================
From monitoring their children's grades, extracurricular activities, to checking their social media, Asian parents impose a lot of rules. But the rifts in the family bonds begin to show, as children question and shake off their parents' expectations.
Back for a third season, “The Family Affair” offers a candid and spontaneous look at life in four Asian middle-class families - China, India, Thailand, and Singapore - as they each grapple with changing times.
    Ong Family, Singapore
    Weng Family, China
    Sharma Family, India
    Saito Family, Japan

Idk I find it kinda ironic that the Ong mother says how personal information shouldn’t be revealed on the internet but she literally has an entire blog dedicated to what the family does.

I don't understand the homeschooling aspect, especially given that the Singaporean parents are both *trained MOE teachers*
She mentioned that it's difficult for the kids to clear their Chinese PSLE (I assume they were fine in their other 3 subjects). If you're trained teachers,
    1) You should already be familiar with the syllabus (and if not cause yes, they do make changes to the syllabus, LOOK IT UP. You have resources, utilize it)
    2) You know the Singapore syllabus is different from the one you're using yet, you're surprised if they fail the first time round? It's not a sudden change to the "PSLE track". *PSLE HAS BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES BTW*
    3) Even if you home school them, they still need to sit and pass their national exams no matter how much you want to deviate from the regular curriculum.
    4) She educates her children by "scaring" them that if they fail, they have to go to school. (And it terrifies Isaiah???) What exactly are they teaching?

This is quite odd and not sure it is healthy for the children if they do not learn independence and how to interact with society.

Jack of all trades but a master of none. The Chinese girl has arrived at nowhere despite having been through all kinds of learning courses in music/dance etc for years. That's because her parents were trying to live out their passions and interests through her by giving her all these lessons without actually finding out what truly interests her and work on her talent instead. It's sad that nowadays many parents have too much expectations from their kids and want them to outperform others instead of themselves. Kids have too much on their plate which cause undue stress on them. Most end up grappling with the learning process and rob them of all joy in learning.

When I am A kid, I never attend any extracurricular class, I woke up whenever I want, I slept whenever I want, I study whenever I feel like it, This were the words that I've been thought, " as long as you get the job done you are free to do whatever you want ". Today I am more successful than any of my peers who did all those extra tuition extra class stuff and got their childhood ruined.

Rarely do Asian parents ask their kids what they want. And I think that the S’pore family has to start letting go of their kids. Monitoring and controlling their 24 hours is unimaginable to me. No soc media and home schooling are killer combo. And these are kids across age gap. This has been the 2nd time that I’ve seen the Indian household eating on the bed. Is a dining table uncommon? It’s the S2 family issue as well (whether to have a dining table or not) Fascinating.

You can really see the difference between the generation gap. The grandma and parents not being open the the daughter in the Chinese family. The parents being very controlling to their 6 kids in the Singaporean family. I think the Japanese mom is very tired of her life but it's what her routine is. And i think the Indian family are still trying to shift after the passing of the mother.

This shows that it doesn’t matter what your nationality is parenting is always a challenging business full of ups and down and the teenage years can be testing - it’s a balance between guiding and pushing them while encouraging them to be independent and responsible and be contributing members of society. The Chinese grandma is pushing her grand daughter away being so critical, Indian father is not doing his son any favours by waiting on him hand and foot but he is lucky the sister is so caring and involved. The Japanese mother needs to develop her own individual interests so she can create an identity outside of being a mother - just my opinion tho! The Ong family is impressive and there seems to be a lot of love and strong family bonds which is admirable but the kids are very sheltered and need to learn how to function in society - as a parent you have to learn how to let go. They are depriving their children of interactions with other children their own age.

the japanese daughter needs to honor her mother, better. being a housewife/mom is just as fulfilling and comes with sacrifices and stress like any other career. A stay at home mother, is a rare blessing now days -the daughter is so fortunate to have her mother's love and care. One day when her mother is gone, she will be regret her lack of respect towards the housewife/mom role - regret for taking that for granted.
