I'm from Finland and I first saw Father Ted when I studied in Ireland in 98. It's now my teenage daughter's favourite TV show. Great comedy knows no borders and is timeless.
@@andyb3666 Easy to say that later though, especially when it's really nobody else's business. She might well have declined at the time because she wanted to distance herself, and then later on just said no I was just busy (because why should she explain herself). None of us will ever really know (and why should we?). Usually when an actor would LIKE to do something but can't due to other commitments, they actually make that very clear (so as to keep relationships good with everyone involved, which is very important in the biz). And if she had done that, I'm sure that would have been reflected in the on-screen caption rather than a pretty blunt "She declined." So I very much reserve my judgement on that one.
+solidsnake58 Agreed. I remember hearing the news at the time. It was a great shock and tragedy. The night after he passed away the BBC played the theme song with its lyrics (Songs of Love by Divine Comedy) and I remember shedding a tear.
Father Ted is one of the best programmes to be on TV in history. No matter how many times I watch any episode of Father Ted, I never get bored of any episode.
My facebook photo (and I'll NEVER change it!) is me standing at the gate of that very house! I went to Ireland for work and made a pilgrimage - something I'd wanted my whole life! My cabbie was utterly stunned he met an American who knew anything about Father Ted, much less was determined to see the house. He said when he told his wife, she replied that it was a shame Dermot Morgan hadn't lived to see that day. What a shame indeed. :( Rest in peace. Even in America we miss you, Father Ted. :(
My fave bit is 05:35 till 05:45: the transition of the mild-mannered, erudite Frank Kelly into Father Jack. It's hilarious and the difference between the two characters is very striking. The most moving part is what Jim Norton had to say.
That part with Jim Norton made me tear up. He says "I can't watch it. It's too painful." I thought he meant the getting kicked part. But it's because he misses his friend. :,(
+Torgo Saves Me too, mate, the very same. I thought originally that he just meant he didn't like watching himself for egoic reasons. I too teared-up when I realised what Jim Norton really meant. It's especially powerful since up till that point he struck me as serious and stoic. Obviously he's a lovely guy.
+mark d short It just shows what an amazing actor he is as well. He couldn't be less like his character, the tyrannical Bishop Brennan. A bit like how Frank Kelly is a million miles away from Father Jack. It's a testament to Dermot and Ardal that they were able to hold their own with such masters of the craft. RIP Dermot. :(
Same. Of course, since I made that previous comment, the great Frank Kelly has also left us. It makes watching the show more poignant knowing some of the great actors in it are no longer around. This show will be a classic for all time though, long after we've all gone, people will still be enjoying Father Ted. And that is a great legacy to leave behind.
I was working in an office in San Francisco when one of my colleagues dropped a quote from Father Ted. I shouted, “Yes! That would be an ecumenical question.” He started laughing so hard.
dandycliff2 That’s really wonderful to hear. I hope you continue to laugh along at Father Ted. The power of comedy is priceless especially Father Ted ❤️
Graham and Arthur are comic royalty in my books...I have gotten so many people hooked on this show.. and each and everyone of them were hooked, just like I. I'm writing this from Newfoundland..we have pretty much the same humour as the Irish. Love it, Love it, Love it....this show is our Pick-me-up show. Congrats boys!
Love the dry humour....being a teuchter from NW Scotland makes me appreciate it! Come to the Isle of Skye and you'll see how similar parts of it are to Craggy Island! Not many priests around, but there are plenty Jacks, Mrs Doyles and Dougals :) This documentary is a lovely tribute to all involved Fr Ted.
It's up there with Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Arrested Development and Ab Fab. every episode worth watching, funny, warm, and you never hate anyone, just pity them and feel "there, but for the grace of god, go I", more than anything else.
After watching Derry Girls with my Irish friend I was so hooked on Irish comedy, and found Father Ted in 2018. Unbelievable, such a brilliant programme and all of it on RUclips. I still watch it from time to time because there's not anything else like it. Since the sad discovery that Dermot Morgan passed so young and Frank Kelly had gone too, watching Father Ted is a strange mixture of pure off-the-charts hilarity and a little sadness.
I use to watch farther Ted as a teenager and found it funny i recently started watching it again and i've never laughed so much in my life! comedy genius pity Dermot Morgan passed away but he will live on forever in our memories
Father Ted ended at the exact right time on the exact right episode. Brilliant series. I loved it. Bought it on DVD actually and i watch it most weekends.
Jim Norton's audio books of James Joyce's work are phenomenal. If you've ever wanted to read Joyce and couldn't get into it, start with the audio books, they'll give you everything you need to understand Joyce
Thank you so much for Father Ted. I still laugh as hard as I did the first time I watched it, true comedy at its very best! Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life ❤️
Greets from the USA, I just discovered this show, and it is one of the most hilarious brilliant comedies I ever watched, I can't get enough, it is so sad it was cut short! Thank you for uploading this, I was interested in the background!
A good pal put me onto this many years ago in an Irish pub on Koh Samui. Still laugh at it today. Very interesting and sad that Jim Norton can't watch it because they had such a blast filming it.
5:35 "feck off !!!" remind me a lot of laugh during this show ...... all this time waiting, episode after episode .... golden years...."drinks, arsse, girlz, fecking water ....." ..... greetings from France.. and thank you for those greats moments ...
Up there with Fawlty Towers' "Don't mention the war" line: glorious. I loved how Ted would dig existential holes for himself, and how Dougal would encourage him. My favourite is the one where Dougal gets all confused about having to believe in God. Absolutely brilliant.
This show is somehow hilarious, absurd, charming, raunchy, and timeless. I've never left the states, and I'm Irish in ancestry only, yet I adore this show!
I'm from Finland and I first saw Father Ted when I studied in Ireland in 98. It's now my teenage daughter's favourite TV show. Great comedy knows no borders and is timeless.
When they tried to get Pauline McLynn to be on the documentary I wonder if they said "Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on."
Would that have been written on queue cards, or conveyed verbally? 😆
🫖🫖🫖🫖🫖🫖🫖
She had moved on in her career.A shame she was a big part of the show.
Pauline addressed this subsequently I think. She said was merely busy when they were filming this, no more to it than that.

I just discovered Father Ted. It really breaks my heart to learn that Dermot Morgan passed away so young. Thanks for posting this video.
solidsnake58 I know, and when he died is kind of spooky; it was 24 hours after they'd finished the last ever episode. Heart attack apparently.
+solidsnake58 Agreed. I remember hearing the news at the time. It was a great shock and tragedy. The night after he passed away the BBC played the theme song with its lyrics (Songs of Love by Divine Comedy) and I remember shedding a tear.
Awww better late than never! ❤ always been a fan since it started! Nothing will beat this comedy 🤣 xx

I'll forever love Father Ted because it transcended generational divides. My grandparents, parents and my generation all loved it, still do.

Very much agree regarding Jim Norton. Very poignant. I wonder if he ever brought himself to watching that episode...
Father Ted was extremely popular with the second generation Irish around the world. I still watch it and I always will.
Heartwarming to see that Ted’s Cortina grew up to be a Granada.
That part with Jim Norton made me tear up.

Funny how I didn't even recognise Frank Kelly when I first saw him out of character.

One of the best sitcoms of all time! I can watch every episode over and over again and it'll still make me laugh.
RIP Dermot Morgan & Frank Kelly
Father Ted was one of the best TV sitcoms ever. It will still be funny in 100 years☺😁🤣👍👍
I hear you're a racist now, father!
Oh definitely !
6:30 "there's a wonder innocence about dougal and father ted that can make them very endearing" i completely agree
Graham Lineham, absolute legend and always will be, what a truly amazing guy.
Father Jack is finally reunited with Father Ted in heaven. Sorry Ted, you haven't escaped your fellow clergy. :)
Exactly 18 years to the day apart, and same cause of death. Almost seems like fate.

He's just arrived in heaven, thought he'd spread himself around a bit@@KarstenG81
You message made me tear up and my heart teared apart 😔😔
The fact that it was a documentary film at first is what gives it that magic. The more I think about that, the funnier it is !
I watched Father Ted growing up. I'm now 22 years old and I can still sit through an entire episode and find it as funny now as I did then.
I just love how father jack - mr frank kelly - just makes his entrance coming out of the sea 😂
RIP sir
I love Father Ted. Such a great comedy performance. It is amazing we enjoy it in Chile in 2021.
I love the bit with Graham Norton solemnly doing Irish dancing in the caravan till it tips over
I was working in an office in San Francisco when one of my colleagues dropped a quote from Father Ted. I shouted, “Yes! That would be an ecumenical question.” He started laughing so hard.
One of the All Time Great Comedy Classics.
This lovely show doesnt date it is so funny and unique....love it.
"That money was just resting in my account..." LOL
Genius writing...
I still genuinely laugh so heartily at some of the scenes in this... the BEST comedy ever made in my view.

I still can't get over the transformation when Frank Kelly puts the teeth in and becomes Father Jack. Utter metamorphosis!

Great Show. Bizarre writing and wonderfully talented cast.
Can't believe its been 14 years. RIP Dermot, a true comic genius taken far too soon. Down with this sort of thing. Careful now!
The greatest Irish comedy (apart from Dave Allen) ever made - to be sure - to be sure.
Came here because I wanted to hear what Father Jack sounds like in real life.

I adore father Ted I remember watching it on E4.
Graham did the It crowd and he is a genius.
Just a top show with top writers & top actors
That's very true, it was also quite touching to jear him talk like that given that his character was always so hostile to Ted
Thank you for that video!
That's NOT the car. It was a Cortina. And in the series it was a Mk.5 Ford Cortina. How did the two writers not notice that?
She's not on any is she? Madness. Got to respect her decision. 1 of the most iconic characters in all of comedy.

RIP Dermot Morgan - 15 years gone today :(
Remember the way he USED to enjoy a good laugh?
RIP Dermot Morgan
Pauline McLynne really should have participated in making this.
R.I.P. Dermot Morgan, legend!
Father Jack looks younger now than in the series. wow
Well, he doesn't NOW. 💀
We're all goin' to heaven, lads. Wheey!
Ardal looks awesome with that beard.
25 years now. Unbelievable. As the fella in Chirpy Burpy Cheap Sheep said in the background “fuckin’ hell”.
RIP Dermot and Frank.
Thank you for so many smiles and laughs
you can say it's a shame that pauline isn't in this, but I think we can all agree that the fact dermot isn't in this is a greater shame
Anybody notice Graham and Arthur were driving the wrong car? Ted's car was a Cortina. They were driving a Granada.
Infuriated me!!!
YES!
(Just a crappy Ford cortina)
Gotta love that voice at 6:46 so distinctive like Anthony Hopkins sort of.
Jack getting out of the water like Gene Hackman in that film, The Poseidon Adventure...
Just loved it
Interesting to watch, only just come across this!
oh thank god you uploaded this. i forgot that it was on tv and i kicked myself up the arse for it!
fun fact: the car used in the series was a Mark 4 Cortina but the car in the documentary was a mark 2 Granada
