I'm a 41 y/o mom of 3, from Colorado. I've been watching Father Ted since about 1999 when Comedy Central ran The best of the BBC one weekend. My children are also fans, and Father Ted has helped me through severe depression.
Have you watched the IT crowd, same feel, hilarious but also interesting characters that grow to have a strong bond, and need each other, also written by Graham Linehan. There’s a RUclips channel called IT crowd
This is a comedy I will remember for the rest of my life number one without a doubt I am only a few miles away from the father Ted house great memories never forgotten ❤️💕💕💕👍👍👍
I spoke to my local priest about 15 years ago and he said he loved Father Ted and he said that Father Ted was not all that far away from life as a Catholic Priest
I'm from Colorado, I worked as a server for 20 years, and occasionally, I'd wait on guests from Ireland. We always bonded over our mutual love of Father Ted. Father Ted is my 'go to' when bouts of depression strike.
We would talk about Father Ted in school on a Monday and I got sent out the class one day for saying “knickers” like Father Jack. When the teacher came out to give me a bollocking I was trying so hard not to laugh but I couldn’t help it!
Seriously this is the best comedy sitcom I've ever watched. Irish people should be proud of Father Ted better than of any film(although I don't know any other... right). There is nothing to be ashamed of, really.
I've recently re-discovered the Divine Comedy/Neil Hannon and am staggered at his cornucopia of 12 studio albums (not including the 2 cricket ones and a couple of operettas, and possibly the dis-owned one, etc). Really worth checking out. They're on tour later this year. I bought 'Songs of Love', made after the theme tune, as piano solo sheet music and play it regularly: highly recommend that too, simple but beautiful.
I have never thought that the show was mocking Irish people. It is funny and the characters are endearing. It is about one imaginary place, one imaginary community. It is comedy !!!!!
Fabulous show, the fact you watch the same programme again and again and still laugh afresh is testiment to that. Graham Linehan also created the IT Crowd, another hilarious prog. which stands repeat viewings. Neil Hannon of the Devine Comedy wrote both theme tunes and turned the FT one into the glorious 'Songs of Love' which you can buy the sheet music for. I forgot about the DC after 1997: turns out Neil's done 11 DC albums and a whole lot more - check them out, peops! A new album out 7 June and touring UK and Europe Oct/Nov 19.
one of my favourite shows of all time i always loved irish comedy but father ted was always my favourite show i found dermot morgan and frank kelly hillarious someday i will meet them both and thank them for bringing the world some joy and laughter
You cant deny people, their talent. Graham, and Arthur's talent, is comedy writing. Just because someone doesn't like it, doesn't mean nobody likes it. Let people be. Being Irish, i was, and never will be offended by Father Ted.
Kind of amazing how even though the whole point of my lovely horse is of it being a joke song of little merit, when Neil Hannon sings it with that piano its like Mozart!
I so wished that more episodes and series couldve been made but then sadly not long after the end of the final series dermot morgan sadly died. It saddens me that such an iconic programme that we all love so much only had a few series when it couldve been so much more and look now farther ted is far more popular thanks to the internet. Rip dermot we all miss ur comedic charm
It’s only when you marry into an Irish family, as I did 32 years ago and have Irish grandparents on top of that, that you realise just how accurate an interpretation of the Irish the Father Ted series was ! Having spent so much time there you realise how real the characters were. My lovely sister in law is a Mrs Doyle 🤣🤣
My Da, a Man from Galway and a Catholic absolutely loved the series because it was so funny and in most cases, true. His Sister on the other hand, who was a serious Catholic hated it - mainly because of the paimful truths within it. It will firever run and run, even longer than Fawlty Towers even!
As a south african who for the first time in my life saw father ted at the age of 54... and red dawrf at the age of 30... i thought father ted was way way beyond hilarious... same as faulty towers .. to me there was one single problem. . Why end such good shows??
Leave me alone ....Oi can have you killed !! This is a combination of brilliant writers and cast , a great combo of regular and one off and recurring characters . It is joint No 1 with Fawlty Tower s ( Flowery Twats ) as the funniest sitcom ever.
The Divine Comedy. They also composed the title music and the lead singer was Teds singing voice for "My Lovely Horse" ... just incase you were still wondering after posting the question a year ago :P
I'm from dublin and as a kid living in the flats we always shouted up to the ma is dinner ready, later she call .your dinner is on the table we would shout back ill be up in a minute 😆😆😆😆😄😄😄😄😄 father Ted crilly is the name of our local priest 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎👌👌👌👌
I would suggest you search out a show called 'dave:as yet untitled' Ardal O'Hanlon tells the story of how (b4 the show was on TV) he strolled up to a random house & asked for a bath because he was soaked to the skin. 'Of course father, not a problem father, would you like a cup of tea & a cake father' He also shares a story of singing 'my lovely horse' on stage but that is a different episode of said show

I always love John and Mary, they're great addition to the show
Shame that the actress who played Mary, died a couple of months ago. Reminds me of me and my missus!
Same.
How can anyone knock this show it makes you warm to the Irish even more...it does me anyway as a Catholic Englishman..
I'm not a Catholic but my parents were and from eastern europe and we had the same religious rugs over the back of our sofas as in father ted,
This is a comedy I will remember for the rest of my life number one without a doubt I am only a few miles away from the father Ted house great memories never forgotten ❤️💕💕💕👍👍👍
Wonderful!! I'm in the UK,but my go to is watching father ted for the ultimate comedy relief ,it's the best
Sheer genius.Father Ted was brilliant.

Only the Irish could make fun of religion and get away with it.
Yep a Irish priest can drink gamble smoke and swear

Johnny and Mary were right on the ball! I Had parents like that!!....But watching them on Father Ted just made me laugh harder!
R.I.P Mary 1951-2021
This series makes me laugh hard. Every time I watch it...over n over. Its genius!
It doesn’t get better than Ted. Just brilliant.
John and Mary fighting at Funland; “Get the feckin’ Crunchies out of the car!”.

Yes I agree, I have been to rural Ireland and I have treasured memories
We are proud of Father Ted.
I remember a golden time in my life and fr.ted was a big part of it.
6:36 The Father Ted theme song sounds beautiful on the piano. Especially that slightly dissonant chord. I had to wipe my eyes for a moment. LOL

The harmony in the theme is interesting. That 'dissonant chord' is a tritone substitution, a common composition technique in jazz :)
The actual song 'SONGS OF LOVE' is beautiful
Graham Lineham is a fellow spirit to Jonathan Harvey. Both deeply adored by the public for their boldness, uncompromising spirit and imagination.
No kidding, I have DREAMT of the "small, far away" scene, and woken myself up laughing!
Iconic show and will always be remembered!
this was such a fantastic TV show I absolutely loved the show, coming from an Irish and Scottish American Yankee
"Get them fecking Crunchies out of the car." 🤣😂
❤️ John and Mary!!

Noel still looks as excited as he did in the fillum. Best sitcom ever and yeah, I'm sad too :(

"I've had my fun... And that's all that matters!" ❤️
"It must be like watching an old black-and-white film." It wasn't that long ago, Graham.

John and Mary can't even stay in the same room for 2 seconds let alone 5 minutes with arguing. You be surprised if the got spilt up at the start.

There’s no political shit in here, they wanted to make it timeless
