Thanks for the very informative video. I've bought the pattern as a result. One suggestion, though, for future similar videos, please use a darker fabric that doesn't reflect the camera lights. A lot of the video was washed out making it hard to see what was going on.
Fantastic job Norris. I'm not so scared to try a mans shirt now. Thank you for taking the time to share your skills, we know how busy you both are with the fabulous magazine and all your other projects, plus your lovely family. Kind regards Kate from the UK X
Fabulous work. I've wanted to sew a dress shirt for my husband and was so intimidated by all the pattern pieces and the skill involved I wouldn't even attempt it. Now, since watching you make that beautiful shirt, I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for your wonderful tutorial, and your amazing talent.
I am now inspired to try a man's dress shirt. It's really an intimidating project but I think I could do it with this video as a guide. Very well done. It's so clear, breaking everything down and making it look so easy. Great video!!!
I've been wanting to start making my own shirts for a long time, but have been really intimidated by all of the cuts and steps and things that are outside of my usual areas of expertise. But hey, that doesn't look hard at all. So, I'm going to run downstairs and get started. Thanks for taking the time to show us how it's done!
This is a fantastic video great instructions, just loved it. For us beginners sometimes it is hard to see what is right and wrong side. A contrasting darker fabric may make it easier to follow. You kept this so simple I really appreciate it.
This was my boyfriends first ever sewing project and your video helped soo much! such a clear tutorial! And the shirt looks amazing on him! i agree with a previous comment about the shirt colour being a bit difficult to see right/wrong side, but everything else was brilliant! Thanks x
Fabulous video so clear and easy to follow! I never thought I’d be able to make a man’s shirt I thought it would be far too complicated but this sewalong has given me the confidence to go for it! I’ve already bought your pattern and now looking for fabric. Thank you so much! 😊 xx
Hi from Australia, a tremendous thanks for your great video on making this simplicity shirt. I have done basic and some costume sewing for many years and wanted to start making clothing from scratch with your video enabling me to achieve this. Great stuff and I look forward to your future videos.
Has anyone actually made one? I have. It fits amazingly. It was my first project for myself. Was very glad to have someone help me with the issues I normally ran into. I have to admit. You do have to have a bit of sewing knowledge to do this project. My sewing skills are probably just above novice. Honestly he left out several things. That is where the skill set comes in. I have made a couple of quilts. Quilts are all straight stitches. Mateing a sleeve to the body of the shirt is substantially more difficult than a straight stitch of a quilt. The video makes it look much easier than it is. But follow along and you can make it happen! I did not really have a problem with the light fabric. Only slightly.
Wish a different color fabric was used or the lighting turned down. I just bought this pattern simply because Mimi G's sew alongs are the truth. I'm a beginner and I have made three of her patterns simply based on these videos and I've subscribed to Sew It Academy
MyUncut Reality I agree...I can't tell when we're working with the right side or wrong side of the fabric. It's pretty frustrating since I just spent hours cutting out all this fabric.
Norris you are a god send! I’m new at sewing and it is so difficult for me to understand the instructions on the patterns Thank heavens for this tutorial you saved me. Excellent! You and Mimi are a good team. Just love her tutorials and made quite a few of her projects. God Bless - Peace ✌️
Finally!!! I've searched and searched for this type of tutorial. Thank you so much for demystifying the men's shirt! Agreed men's trousers next please!!
I just love how simple this was I have been looking for five years for an easy to follow tutorial with shirts in general.....and note no sergers were used
Wow, this video was so helpful! I was sewing a different pattern, whichhad crappy instructions. This was just what I needed. Good explained and concise, without the whole blahblah. Thank you so much!
I really appreciate the help you give on creating this shirt. I was mystified with the construction from the pattern, but this has demystified this for me now! Great sew along, and I’m gonna now attempt my pattern finally! Thank you!!!!
Thanks for this really great video. Fantastic to see a guy sewing, Norris did a wonderful job of walking me through the pattern. I'm going to have a go at making this shirt. Hope we get to see more of him. Greetings and best wishes from North Wales, UK. :-)
I’m trying to clone an existing shirt with the same component parts but had no idea how to put it together, so this video was super helpful! Thank you 🙏
Grabbed that shirt pattern as soon as I saw it! It’s really hard to find a real classic shirt pattern that has all the correct ingredients! Thanks Mimi! I use David Coffins marvelous book on sewing classic shirts but it’s from the 80s and I needed some more modern design help!
It is so nice that someone has thought about doing a tutorial on sewing patterns. Wish I had this when I started sewing. For years I have pleaded with sewing pattern manufacturers to include an online tutorial for their patterns. But they won't. One of the issues I noticed with this tutorial occurs around 3 minutes into the video. When describing how to fold the fabric for pattern piece #1, Norris says that "you will do this for both sides." This can be confusing to someone new to sewing or at least new to sewing button shirts. In sewing there is the wrong side, the right side (the side that usually faces out), the the left side, or the right side (of garment). It would have been better to have stated "you will do this for each front piece."
That was really a great tutorial. I am now going to try this pattern. If you could show how to do the button holes then I think I could really tackle this project. Thanks so much.
I was watching all happy and then you started stitching the placket and started out at a regular speed. Then all of a sudden it was going 100 mph and I was buggin' because I thought dang that's a fast machine! Then I realized the speed was up to get through the seam for time's sake. LOL! I felt like a goober head sitting here laughing at myself. This is a great video. I have this pattern and I've made it several times. I'm gonna bust it out and make it again after watching this post. Thanks for your work. Also, I too would really like to see men's trousers! That would be bomb.
I am not doing the same pattern, but similar in many way. This was really helpful in to understanding better how it fits together and has answered some questions I was having. First time doing a shirt for me (though it is an old west style) and first time in a while sewing (last was a pioneer outfit for my daughter for school).
I love your patterns and that I can sew along with you. I've been following you for a while! I love your growth. If you could one day could you make a simplicity pattern for a men's fitted blazer/sports coat??
This is a great tutorial! Norris did a great job leading the sew along! 😊 Mimi G thanks for adding a men's shirt to your collection. I'm excited to buy this pattern and make one for my husband.
Whoa, you make this look SO easy! Now how about doing a video on sewing a man's shirt with a mandarin collar & a welt pocket. I'll bet you'd make that look simple too!
Like the vid very much. I have been looking for a video exactly like this. This can help me create my own shirts following along or alter a bit the measurements to create my unique style. Like the video. Now I'll be looking one for coats. If any questions, I'll post them here.
Really great pattern and sew along. Love the insutructions, really clear and easy to follow. But it would really help if you could use a fabric so we can see right side and wrong side, and also light it so we can see a little more clearly (it's really bleached out on a pale coloored fabric). .
Fabulous work! Love how you explained the sewing step by step. Maybe a darker fabric would have been easier to see. Kind of hard to see which is the wrong or right side. Hehehe
What a great tutorial!!! I cut my pieces and started putting them together this afternoon. The video is SUPER helpful. I have only one question, and I apologise in advance if someone has already asked it but I couldn’t find anywhere in the comments, does the collar band have the seam allowance included? Or do I have to include it? I’m struggling to get my collar band to fit. 😅 I would really appreciate some help. Thank you!!!
Thanks for your sharing this awesome tutorial. May I know the yoke part( sandwich sewing) the wrong side facing the back of shirt or the right side ? a bit confused. Thank you
Could I use a 100% Rayon Plaid fabric for this top? I'm interested in making a flannel/plaid shirt for my husband and I love the slim fit of this top. I purchased it yesterday and I'm wanting to make it this week. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :-)
11:00 I always knew there was a better way to attach collars! I love your method! Do you have a short sleeve version of this shirt? Thanks again! It’s nice to be a male sew enthusiast and have a male to look to and follow.... keep doing it!
What is this 'inner facing' word I keep hearing? What is a placket? I guess I need to Google! :D I agree that darker fabric would be better for this tutorial. Also, what kind of foot were you using? Looks like a standard 'J' foot. I could see the straight stitch being used. I hate pockets on shirts, so one nice thing about making my own is that I can leave off the pockets. :D I would also leave off the back loop. This video also made it clear that one needs an iron and ironing surface nearby when making clothing. I like that you sped up some of the sewing and pinning sections to keep a good pace. It would also be helpful to explain why you start and end with a backstitch. I know this already, but maybe it would be nice to share why you're doing this. I know this isn't a basic sewing tutorial though so I guess this omission isn't too big of a deal. Good tutorial. Thank you!
This is an amazing help for me....just a quick question, how do you finish the seams inside the shirt? I'm assuming you don't leave them as raw edges? Thanks 👍
So I have a size 17 1/2 in. Neck, which according to the pattern is a size 48 in US. And my body is a size 40, of I cut out a size 48 for the collar and collar facing, will it be to big for the 40 neckline? Or will the size 40 collar fit me when it's done
Does this pattern call for flat felt seams? I was hoping to see how you do that. I’m working on simplicity’s 8753. Video is very helpful for the rest. Thanks
Thank you for this very good tutorial. A few questions: is there a video that shows how to mark and cut fabric with patterns? I know I'll miss something in that process. If I want to add collar stays, is it the same process as adding the front pocket (except on the piece of fabric that makes the underside of the collar and really narrow)? I'll add to the chorus of requests for darker fabric or more care with the camera exposure settings.
I hate to push someone else’s work on here but consider getting David Coffins book making classic shirts( might have the title off a little, I got mine from Amazon)! It is all about recreating bespoke and custom details! It works great with this pattern!
how would you recommend I finish the side and sleeve seams? because the raw edges stay exposed this way... I wanted to try a french seam but i don’t think it works with this pattern being sewn in this order, does it?
Thanks. Your video is very calming...great! I suggest a little darker fabric too, please, as it was difficult to distinguish where you were stitching. Very informative though. Thank you :)
Thanks for the very informative video. I've bought the pattern as a result. One suggestion, though, for future similar videos, please use a darker fabric that doesn't reflect the camera lights. A lot of the video was washed out making it hard to see what was going on.
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. It's going to make my job so much easier.
So true. I was squinting half way through the cuff part
Cannot tell you how many times I've had to watch certain parts of this video. Very helpful. Especially with the cuffs and collars. THANKS!
Fantastic job Norris. I'm not so scared to try a mans shirt now. Thank you for taking the time to share your skills, we know how busy you both are with the fabulous magazine and all your other projects, plus your lovely family. Kind regards Kate from the UK X
I have been looking for a pattern like this for ages. please make a men trousers Mimi G and Norris

Thank you very much. I'm a very beginner and this video really helps me. Also, the speaker has a very pleasant speaking voice.
Great job Norris. I have been stuck on a man's shirt pattern for a year. Now, I am able to complete it thanks to this video.
This is a fantastic video great instructions, just loved it. For us beginners sometimes it is hard to see what is right and wrong side. A contrasting darker fabric may make it easier to follow. You kept this so simple I really appreciate it.
Agreed. Great video, I learned a bunch, but a darker fabric would be more helpful.
Definitely need darker fabric. I was thinking it was my phone color 😅 good thing u seen it also.
This was my boyfriends first ever sewing project and your video helped soo much! such a clear tutorial! And the shirt looks amazing on him! i agree with a previous comment about the shirt colour being a bit difficult to see right/wrong side, but everything else was brilliant! Thanks x

I picked the French cuffs and I am working on my third shirt. Thank you for this video. It was very helpful.
Congrats on a well made shirt! This project is not beginner level so props to taking this on!
Way to go Norris! You make it look easy! Thank you for your hard work!

Thank you please do more videos ❤
I’m not scared of shirts anymore 😅😊
excellent Norris I got this from Mimi G's 2017 conference I will sew this shirt for my hubby thanks to this tutorial
Good job Norris, I've been making mens shirts for years and I'll say you did a great job, keep up the good work awesome!!!!
I'm new to sewing and appreciated the video. The instructions helped me through the confusion of the pattern instructions.
I had to make a shirt today and I learned so much from this video! I'm thankful I found it. Thank you so much for this video!
wow, what a lovely calm and detailed tutorial. Thank you so much Norris, I am definitely going to try this. Kind regards from the UK.
Thanks for this really great video. Fantastic to see a guy sewing, Norris did a wonderful job of walking me through the pattern. I'm going to have a go at making this shirt. Hope we get to see more of him. Greetings and best wishes from North Wales, UK. :-)

Yeeess Norris yeesss great job! I'll be helping my son sew a few of these shirts! Now we need a pair of trousers and a vest!
THANK YOU so much for this tutorial. I just finished my first shirt and it came out great thanks to your guidance.

very clear and understandable. Bless you and your teaching.
Thank You Mimi YOUR THE BEST❤️❤️❤️
Very good tutorial. I am getting ready to make my first dress shirt. This helped so much. Good pacing!
Thanks for the tutorial. Lighting was an issue, but I appreciate the effort. Men's slacks next please.

Great video! Sewing a similar shirt today and found that the second page of pattern instructions is missing from the envelope. You saved the day! 😊
Thank you! Awesome tutorial

This was so helpful. Thank you!
You've done a great job, sir. Now, I can't wait to make something for my husband now. what kind of fabric would you suggest?
Love this. Could you think about doing amens series for large and tall men. One shirt alone can cost 75.00. Please!
great tutorial! thank you!!
good video was looking forward to this I bought the pattern
Fabulous work! Love how you explained the sewing step by step. Maybe a darker fabric would have been easier to see. Kind of hard to see which is the wrong or right side. Hehehe
Thank you so much for this
Great tutorial, thank you
This is a great tutorial! Thanks!!
NICE...Like the fabric too.
This was a great video thank you 🙏🏻

Thanks I’m doing a project for my fashion class and the cuffs heavily confused me
Great video. Just bought the pattern. Have watched a few other videos and this one is very unintimidating - can clearly see the shirt take shape.
Thank you for creating this video but can you create another one with a different fabric and better lighting with better instructions.
how would you recommend I finish the side and sleeve seams? because the raw edges stay exposed this way... I wanted to try a french seam but i don’t think it works with this pattern being sewn in this order, does it?
Yes, it will work.

great vid, but i would have liked to see more details - marking and cutting in the beginning, and the sewing of the hem at the end. thank you!
