Just to let you know that even after 11 years, your video is still helping people! Your video is much clearer than pattern instructions! Thanks so much!
I saved this video a long time ago after a dress pattern required two yoke pieces to be sown by hand. I knew there was a better way but didn't know how, until I came across this wonderful video. It's my go to now
Russell, My name is Russell and I would have been lost without your video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. That is a beautiful thing to do.
This saved me 😭 dont have a lot of sewing experience and picked up a pattern for a button down shirt and the instructions left me so confused, wasted so much time and fabric making mistakes at this part and now i finally have it done -thank you so much!!
Thanks Russell, your instructions are clear and to the point. The whole time was well spent without unnecessary chatter. Very professional presentation. I understood and enjoyed your video presentation thoroughly.
Thank you for this. I've looked at several videos and yours made the most sense and seems to be the way my pattern instructed me to do it. I just couldn't make sense of it until I watched this..........I'm going to replay this while sewing the yoke on my blouse. thank you again.
first time sewing a yoke and i gotta say, i'm very impressed how easy this method was; i'm learning patternmaking, sewing, and tech specs straight from books and having this def made everything easier!
This was amazing. I make pillow cases this way by rolling it up but shirts!!! BRAVO. I learnt something real new and an elegant professional result. I will be able to make shirts YOUR EASY WAY. You are truly amazing. You kept me smiling all the time. Thanks for sharing and caring.
i did a night course but being the only bloke was left to get on, your vids are clear and understandable, please do more like cuffs and collars, finally able to enjoy my sewing again thanks
Thank you for this demo...Ive been sewing masks and such but not made any clothing since home ec in high school many years ago, but decided to make matching Hawaiian shirts for my son and husband...my pattern instructions were difficult for me to understand...I was sure I’d still have cut out pattern pieces in my fabric tote in 30 years...I watched several RUclips videos but this video is the one I used, my husband helped me (he stopped the video while I followed along) he was amazed how it worked! Thank you!
Hello again Russell, I just had to write and tell you that I have now completed sewing my blouse yolk and it looks good. Just like yours. Thank you. Ann
Thankyou so so so much for this tutorial, it was SO easy to understand.. It's amazing how you showed me an even easier and more efficient way than my fashion design sewing teacher did!! Thanks Again!!!
Thank you. Been so long since I made a shirt - I had not seen this technique and the pattern's instructions seemed confusing - you've sorted that out so well!
Thank you so very much! I tried to understand the pattern and could not, your way of teaching is absolutely fantastic. Because you teach step by step with time and patient, I now understand how to put yoke front and yoke back together. Thank you
Its Funny how this showed up in my RUclips feed today, I remember watching this video 5 years ago during my fashion college days in Singapore, while panicking and stressing over a class assignment in which I had to sew a shirt yoke, it was my first time doing anything like that and I remember watching a lot of videos from this channel for help And it really helped me tons! Thank you so much! Hope you are doing well! 👍🏻
Hi Russell. Enjoyed your video - nice and easy presentation. I am pretty experienced at sewing but I just love it when I pick up a new tip, which I have from your video today. I do actually attach the yoke as you have shown, but generally struggle to bunch up all the fabric so I can attach the yoke to the front pieces in one seam. Your easy way of rolling up the pieces (I think you called it burrito) is such a great and simple technique. I could feel myself thinking why haven't I just done that before. Many thanks and I look forward to learning something else from you. Finally, it is so good to see other men sewing! Best - David
I recently bought a book on how to sew men shirts. After reading over and over I was about to give up. Thank you so much!!!! After seeing your video tutorial It was amazingly easy to sew the yoke!!! Will subscribe! U are a great teacher!
I can't thank you enough for this video and helping me with my first yoke ever. I have learning issues and struggled with doing the yoke for nearly a week and still couldn't do it. After watching your instructions a few times ... BINGO!! I got it!! Thanks so very much! (Anytime time I might need help, you will be my hero go-to!)
Your yolk burrito saved meI Thank you for sharing. I thought I'd hit a dead end as I hack a women's nightgown pattern to make my son's halloween tunic. Feeling grateful!!!
Thank you so much for this very clear demonstration. I am about to make a shirt for the first time and am now confident about tackling this project. Keep up the excellent presentations!!
A tip for those who find making a crease at centre doesn't hold its shape, you can snip in a tiny triangle at that point, WITHIN your seam allowance. DO NOT go beyond. SAme technique can be applied for notches on other parts of your patter pieces as well. To the admin: I will give this yoke method a go and leave my feedback later. Your explanation is by far the clearest to understand. Filmed and presented professionally.
Thank you so much for a brilliant tutorial. I am just about to sew a yolk for the first time and find this so easy to follow. Wasn't going to do the burrito method. However I will now you have made it so easy to have a go at. Love the fabric you demonstrated with, I love a stripe :)
This is video tutorial is extremely well done. I learned so much, and found it easy to follow along. I never sewed a yoke, and could not follow the written directions in the patten. Keep up the good work!
I haven't been able to make sense of a womans princess camp shirt pattern but this video helped me to understand the instructions. Thank you! I thought I'd never get past this point and was about to put it aside.
I have made many shirts but thought I would review putting on the yoke, what a a cool way to attach yoke, no folding seam and topstitching. I make pillowcases with the same method. Thanks for this "neat" technique.
If your stitch length is appropriate to the weight of the fabric, it is typically unnecessary to back stitch. However, if you are uncertain, you'll never go wrong with backstitching, but you can go wrong without! One of the reasons not to backstitch is to reduce bulk. A method I often employ instead of backstitching in order to reduce bulk is to decrease my stitch length at the beginning and end of a seam for about half an inch to anchor the ends.
Thanks so much!!!! I am learning how to sew with my teenage daughter and I got completely lost in following a Hawaiian shirt pattern on the yoke. You made it crystal clear! Thanks
Many thanks this was a real sewing wow moment and revelation! I have just done it successfully - the result is much better than the conventional method I use which involves hand sewing.
Thank you Russell. This was a brilliant video and it really helped me to understand what can be one of the difficult steps in sewing a blouse. Best wishes Ann in South Australia.
Thank you so much! I couldn't understand what the instructions were trying to tell me so I came looking for help and this really helped me. Thank you so much, it's so simple and fast and I really love the shirt :D
Excellent video!! Very referential to Islander Sewing teachings per the "burrito" technique. Would have loved to see an extension table or recessed in a cabinet for professional industrial ergonomics. Baby Lock makes a great extension table for the Symphony which would have allowed the fabric to lay flat without hanging over the edge.
Wow! A sewing machine that with a push of a button snips the thread for you! I'm way behind the times. The roll-up step is very neat. I'll be sharing this with Momma!
Thank you thank you!! A thousand thanks! I was going crazy trying to sew the yoke before you did the roll up thingy move. The instructions in the pattern were just... incomprehensible. I knew how it was supposed to be but I couldn't get it there. :)
I keep referring back to this video every time I make a shirt with a yoke. this has COMPLETELY made it understandable.......Thank you again................
Thank you for your kind words. How'd your shirt turn out? (The first project I made ever was a tailored shirt. I don't recall how it looked, but I do recall that I wore it EVERYWHERE!)
This is such a good video, not only is the making of the yoke a wonder! But also the quality of scripting and filming editing is so good. Please Russell (if I could be so bold) can we have more!
Just to let you know that even after 11 years, your video is still helping people! Your video is much clearer than pattern instructions! Thanks so much!
This is the most clear demo of the burrito method I've seen. Thanks.
I swear... this is one of the best and easiest sewing videos i av ever found on youtube... thanks a lot. Heaven send
I saved this video a long time ago after a dress pattern required two yoke pieces to be sown by hand. I knew there was a better way but didn't know how, until I came across this wonderful video. It's my go to now

The rolling tip is great! Turning it inside out while trying to pin it to start was confusing but this made way more sense. Thanks!
This saved me 😭 dont have a lot of sewing experience and picked up a pattern for a button down shirt and the instructions left me so confused, wasted so much time and fabric making mistakes at this part and now i finally have it done -thank you so much!!

Thank you for this. I've looked at several videos and yours made the most sense and seems to be the way my pattern instructed me to do it. I just couldn't make sense of it until I watched this..........I'm going to replay this while sewing the yoke on my blouse. thank you again.
