OMG can I just say I love your deadpan sense of humor *chef's kiss*. But also, I really appreciate that you share when you mess up (like the off-center collar stand) and point out the work and practice that goes into building a new skill even as an experienced sewist by showing all the pre-filming mockups you had to do. It really helps build confidence and helps us viewers adopt a healthier growth mindset (even if it my first attempt is an utter failure, I can and will improve if I put in the necessary intentional practice) vs. fixed mindset (if I don't succeed the first time I try something, I'm obviously bad at it and always will be). So thanks for that.
I'm glad to hear that it's appreciated! Perfection is impossible so it's best to embrace it. I say this because it's one of the hardest things for me to do :) Thanks for watching and happy sewing.
Exactly. One of the worst things we humans do to ourselves is misunderstand the importance of giving ourselves permission to make mistakes and fail more than once. Remember, Edison 'failed' 120 times before actually getting the light bulb to work. He didn't give up.
I can’t express how much love and safety for me is in videos that go "I do this, then I usually do that" instead of the patronizing "do this step, then you have to do that step". The only other creators that come to mind that do this are NileRed and Cody’sLab - I always wished I knew more, and today I found this channel 💛
I like your choice to use solid pink fabric for your sample with the blue floral ironing board cover. It makes a nice contrast for the shot. That's good video production.
I love your tip at 14:14 about walking out the neck measurement before attaching the collar to the shirt, to figure out the seam allowance. I am learning to make shirts like this, and it took me three tries before I realized I could do that. Now I intentionally leave a little extra seam allowance around the neck when I draft the pattern for the front panels and the yoke. It makes a huge difference in how the ends of the collar line up with the front of the shirt. This is the first time I've seen someone explain it on RUclips. Your videos have great tips that are useful and non-obvious. Plus, you explain everything really well.
Holy moly, I can’t thank you enough for this. I need to understand the *why* of a thing before it sticks in my head. I’ve watched what has to be at least a dozen videos on how to draft a collar by now and not a single one of them explained WHY anything was being done. It’s all just been endless lines and seemingly random numbers but they’re so aggressively commanding about it all, like if you don’t use those mysterious numbers, some authority will come and take you away. I was beginning to wonder if the numbers had been revealed to an ancient, sacred, caste of tailors all sworn to secrecy lest plagues be released upon the earth. You are the first person who explained what I’m looking at and how to alter the bits to suit my own needs. What a relief!!
Thank you! I'm trying to recreate a lost pattern that my grandmother made for me. I've been struggling with the collar. Watched this a couple of times and I think I finally have it right. Love your channel, and thanks again!!
I may not make a collar for another year or two (who knows), but I love watching your tutorials, as they are so enjoyable. Thank you for sharing your talents to teach.
I have barely watched the tutorial yet, but I am in love with your personality! I hit follow to make sure I can find your tutorials (but primarily your energy!) again.
I nearly snorted my tea when you said "top collar flappy over bit." And then I literally said "oooooh" when you so excitedly said "because we're gonna make collar stays!" Your videos are great, and have been incredibly helpful in leveling up my pattern drafting and menswear sewing game. It's been invaluable as my partner and I have been working on his wardrobe, since he doesn't quite fit perfectly in off-the-rack clothes.
Love this so much! I have a bunch of 70s shirt patterns that fit well but have the largest collar points you've ever seen. 😂 I've been trying to redraft them forever, but never to my satisfaction. Now I have a great guide to try again. Thank you!
i always have a tough time at the last sewing part you showed: on the final folding and stich of the base collar. i leave an extra seam allowence so the folded seam - on the inside of the garment- doesn't escape when sewing. the result is a ended base collar but not that neat, because that added allowence sometimes gets away (leaving triangles extra fabric on the sides) . i -also - always watch your videos. they're very helpful ❤ thanks!! greetings from argentina, country where isabel sarli comes from :)
I am glad to hear this video was of use to you. Thanks for sharing your way of doing it as well. Hopefully you can dial in your technique for yourself.
Hi Cornelius, great channel! RUclips is full of aunties, that sew for their peers. This here is different, really entertaining, zero bs and right on the money. I might have a question. I like the movie “In the mood for love” a lot. It is from Hong Kong and the main actress wears dresses. Beautiful dresses. I was just wondering,… I really would like to make one myself for my girlfriend. The question is: Do you have an idea, how to create a pattern like it? These dresses are so smooth, and tight at the same time.
Well thank you. As for how to make the dress, I would suggest metric pattern cutting for womenswear: amzn.to/416RDXN Full disclosure, that's an affiliate link.
I was drinking tea and eating home baked cookies while my mind goggled at the little things nobody ever taught me, like the 45 degree sewing turn on a corner.
Thanks for this one. I haven't made a shirt with a flappy down collar yet (though I'm starting to think I've mastered facings) but it's defnitely something that might happen. I used to be quite happy in a 14" neck men's shirt but age has decided to give me more volume up front than fits well into that size men's shirt anymore and women's clothing is garbage, so this is good to know if I ever want a shirt that actually FITS me. And thanks for showing the little pointy collar stays and how they can be made from something in the recycle bin... I'm sure my first few will look like hot garbage but that's ok as long as the're comfy. And I had ice cream for lunch. I'm an adult, I can do what I want.
Hi Cornelius, thanks so much for the video. As a nube, your videos have been so helpful and I love the detailed step by step approach. With this approach to sewing the collar I really like that the interfacing is there as a guide for where to sew. Do you have any tips on how to cut the interfacing (or fabric in general) so that the shape is precise? I’m finding it hard to cut straight lines as the fabric shifts around. Thanks!
Easier to sew the collar in first. You can always catch the collar seam with the lining afterwards. You can sew the collar in with the lining in one shot but you have to line all the fabric up perfect.
Excellent video as usual! Curious about the interfacing. What are your thoughts on the sew-in type of interfacing? Have you ever used it. Just curious because I don't fully understand if there are sewing advantages or drawbacks to using sew-in interfacing versus fusible.
From what I've gathered, sew-in interfacing is good for adding structure in a draping environment. For lacy and textured fabrics where pressing it down isn't as feasible. It also reduced the bubbling that can happen after washing. I have only used it a little bit. It adds the challenge of an extra layer but manageable. There are more use cases but this is what I recall off the top of my head.
Hello, my name is Lucas and I really like videos. Recently, I bought the book that you use in the videos and, since I am Brazilian, I am having some comprehension problems with the body measurements. What does the author mean by athletic or mature figures? My doubt is which one I am classified as. I am neither skinny nor muscular, so I don’t know if I can call myself athletic. But I am also neither fat nor elderly. Could you please help me?
Good explanation why not teaching pant cutting stitching we are watching youtube we pay for Watching RUclips I mean Recharge our mobiles to go online to learn drafting cutting why memembership those who want they can go fir it All the best 👍 thank you God bless 🙌 you

I appreciate it as well, after your sleeve video I have spent a week just making sleeves on everything. This is a skill that needs honing.

I'm really glad to hear it. I'm just figuring it all out myself as well and there's always various ways to achieve a task. You got this :)
The best sewing teacher ever.
Thank you!

You are unbelievably calming to watch, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks, I have sewn for decades but still have so much to learn.

Very impressive collars drive me nuts
They can be a challenge indeed!
I run from collars like a gazelle
You are the best,i keep smiling, your sense of humor is a blessing..❤
Thank you. May you too :)
One of the best collar descriptions I’ve seen! I’m relatively new to sewing and collars are a challenge.
They're still a challenge for me, so keep at it :)
Thank you! I'm attempting to make a jacket but the pattern didn't include a collar so this will seriously be helpful!
Glad you found it helpful! Good luck with your jacket!
You gave a video for everything!
Another educational and enjoyable video. Editing Corn always amazes!
Editing Corn says man thanks :)

I can't wait to take my time through this video..I have been struggling so much trying to sort my kiddos difficult pattern. I need more collar skills!
Oh nice, well I have full faith you can figure it out!
I enjoy your explanations but the way you tackle things that are difficult is great. I hate collars they always give me a pain.
I'm glad to hear it. I have full faith you can eventually master them :)
Such skill and know-how! You make it look easy...
We can all do it with a bit of practise :)
Joy oh bliss I need to make a collar for my cape. I'm already dreading it.

I'm glad to hear it. Maybe try using a cutting wheel. Also, drawing it out on the interfacing helps.
On a coat/jacket do I first sew in the collar or the lining?
Easier to sew the collar in first. You can always catch the collar seam with the lining afterwards. You can sew the collar in with the lining in one shot but you have to line all the fabric up perfect.
I love from India Sir Nice Work

I've been using your videos to make my grandson a shirt. So hard to find good shirt fabric.
Indeed, it can be difficult to find nice fabrics. Happy sewing.
Corn, we need a 2023 pant pattern draft tutorial - more in depth!!
Noted. It could use an update indeed.
Can i use the same fabric for the collar band?
Im going to use cotton
You sure can.
Hey, thanks a lot for sharing.

I think you would fit more into the athletic category. Mature means older men who are more "squared up" and more likely to have bellies.
