How To Make Men’s Dress Shirt Pattern_Body [Pattern Making Tutorial]

- A dress shirt is often accompanied by a tie. So the shirt's neck fits very well with the model. There’s not so much room. The length is pretty long because it's meant to be tucked into pants. You can draft really boxy or fitted by how much ease you have. You can apply this method to women’s shirts as well.
In this video, I show you how to draft a dress shirt's body patterns from scratch.

👩 About me 👩
My name is Jin Kim and I have been a professional pattern maker for over 20 years.
While I had one-on-one teaching besides my full-time work, I could teach only a few people. So, I created a RUclips channel in 2021 to reach out to more people so that they can get benefits from my experience.
This channel is all about pattern makings. You’re in the right place if you are a young professional or a fashion student who wants to improve your pattern-making skills.

Hola, saludos desde Colombia 🇨🇴. ¿Cuál es el software que usas para realizar los patrones en los tutoriales? Gracias
Can I ask what software you are using? Time to transisition over. Thank you for this simplified version. Brief and to the point.
I’m using PAD system.
Thank you very much ...❤️👍💐

Welcome to my channel 😁
hello there please i want to know am goinf to add seam allowances before sewing it been already
Hi, sorry to sound really stupid as I’m not a trained pattern maker and I’m still learning. Your videos are amazing and really informative. Very clear to understand. However, please can you advise - do I need to add seam allowance to this pattern once it is created following your tutorial instructions please?
Or can it just be placed straight onto the fabric to cut out and then sew pieces together?
Thank you for your help or any comments.
All the best 🧵👍🏼😙
Hi, none of my pattern tutorials include seam allowance. So you have to add seam allowance after you draft the pattern with my instructions.
Hello, my dear teacher...do we need to close the loop in the drawing of the patterns? Especially in the pattern with pins...like closing the loop of the stein ring and the neck? Thank you, you are the best.
Hi Elnaz, I don’t think I understand your question properly. What does "loop" mean in pattern making?
I love your videos .can we use this pattern to make kids basic bodice?
Yes, you can. Thank you 😊
What is the cross back measurement please?
I don’t measure across back. I just calculate from the shoulder point. If you have one, then you can use that.
Loved the video! What software do you use to pattermaking?
Hi, this is PAD system. Thanks.
Hi we need two more videos about how to move darts the different ways
180
What are the changes we need to adjust in men formal shirt patterns for best fit to 0:08 different body shape please make a video about it
For different body shapes, you need fitting. And adjust patterns depending on fitting issues.
Hi Madam (Pattern Studio 101)
First I really appreciate your Work for everyone.
Many thanks for your Lecture and help.
Madam
Can we use that same Bodice Pattern for Jumpsuits Upper Patterns ?? Like Skydiving suits?
Please reply Must....
You can use this shirt pattern to make jumpsuit. Watch this video: ruclips.net/video/F8ageU4TtfM/видео.html
hi there, i really love the way you teach, i have one question about arm hole depth, as you said chest circumference /5 + 3" , is the chest measurement included with ease or the actual measurement?
It doesn’t really matter, but Ii you have a small ease, you can calculate with ease. If you have a lot of ease then calculate without ease.
@@PatternStudio101thanks a a lot to reply i really apricate it.
Hello, I really found this video useful, but what is the software you’re using?
This is PAD system.
Hi! Was curious if I still would come down 3/4 of an inch down the armhole, if I don’t add in the tuck? With the dart being 1/4 of an inch, I assume I may want to drop more, possibly a whole inch instead to compensate. Thanks.
I don’t think I understand your question. Can you explain more detailed?
Hi! I’m not sure if I missed it but could you let me know the cutting instructions? I know cut 2 front and the yoke on fold but is it 2 yoke? Or just one? Thank you 😊
There’s no fixed rule for that. You can make double layers for the yoke. But if the fabric is thick, 1 layer would be okay too.
Kindly show how to draft mens JACKET thank you 😊
Hi, I have videos on how to make men’s blazer!
Dear Jin, Once again, thank you very much for your great lessons.
May I understand when you add 3" to half of the chest, the total ease is 6", right?
Can I apply this lesson's instruction to draft loose fit coats with the range of ease between 8 to 12 inches?
Thank you. 🙏
Yes, 3" on half body, so 6" in total.
And depending on your coat design or silhouette, you can apply this method.
You can start with 8-12" ease, but I can't say about that. It really depends on the fit you want! It will be more like jacket because the sleeve cap height is pretty low.
Thank you very much. Well noted. Yes, the silhouette is boxy and straight-ish. More or less the same shape of the brown coat in your pdf file for armhole depth and sleeve cap height on your website.
Thank you.
Thank you for great videos. How can I make a shirt for someone who i can't have his measurements? I wonder if there's a size chart for men on your website?
Hi, I don’t have any size charts. All my videos are based on body measurements. Thanks!
Thanks ma'am for the tutorial..very clear to understand, but i have a question. What's the one inch extension at the back for? I mean, will it be pleated or used as a tuck?
Yes, that 1" is for tucks. If you don’t want, you don’t have to have it.
@@PatternStudio101 many thanks for ur prompt response
please can you give as men's women measurement?
I don’t think I understand properly.
Hi,
Do I divide chest circumference by 12?
For the neck width.
Hello ma'am I have learned your pattern, now I need a software where I design it kindly favour me about.
The software I use is PAD Share.
Hi, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I don't get why you cut 1"(width) from the CF shoulder seam. And you add it to the CB shoulder seam. That means the shoulder CB will go over to the front. As shown in your example. At the cross back of CB is (Ex. 9") Will be the same as CF minus 1/2". I find the length is short to transfer to CB's shoulder. So I did not minus 1/2". CB's shoulder length should be the same length as CF's?. Thank you for your immediate response.
Depending on posture, armhole depth of front and back can be the same. But for the normal posture, front armhole depth is a little bit shorter than the back armhole depth.
And if you want to have the shoulder seam on the right shoulder line, you don’t have to move 1” out from the front to the back. That’s the design line.
you my teacher your pattern very nice nice and good but which what this software name ?
This is PAD system. Thank you!
Hi so helpful, can show me how to make a man's suit coat
I have videos on men's blazer pattern making.
OK thank you, how do I access them mam
@@lungiswakhotseng1947 It’s in my channel. Go through videos. You will find it.
Lol
I have one doubt why you extend 1' for center back??
It is for a box pleat that is usually in men’s dress shirt( in the middle at CB under the yoke)
can you make us measurement charts for men and women to practice the videos
and haw to take measurment for men and women
basic pattern for children and the measurment please
thank you so mathe
Hi, head over to my website and join my email list. You will get my email with “how to measure” guide. And I don’t have plans to take care of children’s wear patterns yet. Maybe later 😊
@@PatternStudio101 ok thank you so mush
Dear Jin, If I drop the shoulder 2 inches (instead of your half-inch example), do I still have to use the midpoint of the dashed cross back guide line to draw the armhole? If yes, the curve is a bit too curvy. Is it ok? Thank you.
Hi, normally, when you drop the shoulder, your cross chest and chest will be bigger accordingly. So your armhole curve becomes less curvy. Is that make sense?
@@PatternStudio101 Thank you so much. Yes, perfectly. So, if I drop the shoulder for 2 inches, I better add 1 or 1.5 inches to the cross back to keep the armhole curve shape not too distorted.
But Jin, what if the waist is bigger than the chest? Wouldn’t I divide the paper into 2 using the waist measurement rather. Cos I think it would be ill-fitting for one with a big stomach. What’s your take?
Hi, you can make chest with waist measurement. Or you can make the pleat at the CB bigger and revise the side seam to get wider instead of straight.
Hi mam I'm India my name ram petten work wow nice
Thank you!
Hi mam i love ur videos. Can u please tell me how to take armhole depth for kids. Because it is too big
When i add 3 to chest/5.
This is why we do fitting. See how much you need to reduce the armhole depth. Even for adults, the formula doesn’t work for everyone.
What software do you use?
This is PAD system.
❤ from 🇮🇳
Great tutorial and well explained. Thanks a lot.
How are you?
How do you measure a back length
From the center back neck point to the shirt hem would be the back length.
which software do u use ?
This is PAD system.
Hello! Does your men's dress shirt pattern include seam allowance?
No, any of my patterns include seam allowance.
Can we learn your software?
I have videos that teach you PAD system. Green colour on Thumbnails are the one.
Where were you for so many years
I was working in Korea for almost 20 years and I moved to Canada 9 years ago.😊
More more video make u

Hi
Hi mam!
Whats up?
Could you help me?
I need a job.
I'm a tailor man.
I know how to cut shirt, pant, blezar, waist coat and many kind of dress.
Software used???
This is PAD system.
Please,I didn't get you clearly, you said to get the sleeve length, how many inches should we deduct from the model's height?
Hi, you measure the sleeve length from model's body. I don't calculate sleeve length from the model's height.
What is your software name
This is PAD Share. 😁
I need the dimensions for each line by cm please
I explain with inches but the subtitles have inches and cm together.
Why extend 1" in this point 5:13
To make a pleat at the center back.
Software name pls
This is PAD system.
