This was such a pleasure to watch. You explained everything so well and so precisely. The best men's dress shirt tutorial I've seen. Thank you
You are very kind. Thank you!
Newbie sewer here. I've been doing tonnes of reading and watching videos - this video has been bookmarked. Not quite ready to do my first shirt, but I have learned a lot of basic transferable skills. I feel like I am becoming more comfortable and clearer in how the various pieces come together. It's really a beautiful process. Soon, I will need to take my own measurements and either draft our or adapt a commercial pattern... my slightly more girthy mid-section is causing me some hang-ups. Sadly, I can't even deconstruct any of my dozens of dress shirts I wore years ago to use as a guide.
All the same, thank you for this great video and demonstration!
You are very welcome!
Superb video! 95% perfect, the 5% is the low soundvolume.
Thank you, Dennis. I appreciate your input. I'll watch the sound volume!
I took a commission for a mens shirt (never made one before...what was I thinking!?) and this tutorial was ABSOLUTELY indispensable. Thank you SO SO much!
You are very welcome. I'm glad it helped!
Thank you Russell, this is a very well explained sew along. I've only made a couple of shirts, I think your instruction will take my confidence up a notch or two. Really appreciate your generous spirit in sharing. Greetings from North Wales UK. 😊
My pleasure. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
I've watched so many vids on this item and find yours the most understandable both verbally and visually. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you so much. You explain so well and your voice very calm and refreshing. This was very helpful. I will also love to see how you did the pattern drafting. God bless you
Thank you.
This is the best video I have seen about making a mans dress shirt. Thank you
I appreciate your kindness. Thank you!
Thank you. Such a great tailorm
Thank you.
Exceptional instructions! Came across this by mistake, but couldn't stop watching. I will definitely use the information and come back to review. Thank you for your valuable time and assistance!
My pleasure. Thank you for your kind words.
can't believe it's been over 2 years since I came across this. now, several shirts along, I'm improving to the point where I can finally wear one out in public, and fool people into thinking I shop high end. it's certainly an enjoyable process. thankyou!
Congratulations! And kudos for sticking with it. All you need to do is put in your own label and start charging!
Thank you for excellent tutorial! Your explanations are clear, video, light and sound good quality. Chapeau!
This guy is real common sense sewing. Best tips I've ever gotten on shirt making! Wow.❤
Thank you.
I am very grateful for your RUclips contribution. I just love, love, love your tutorials!
I appreciate your support - thank you.
This is such a good video. Thank you for verbally explaining everything first, then showing the process clearly on camera. For a beginner, this tutorial is heaven sent :)
Thank you for explaining all the minute details and for showing how to accomplish them. Very helpful!
My pleasure! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much ! Thanks to you, it seems so easy to make a shirt. Your video helped me a lot and my new shirt is perfect !
My pleasure!
The dart thread trick! 👏🏼
I appreciate that - thank you!
The Presentation of this Tutorial is the best and very thorough. Thank you very much. Worth It!
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this. The explanation was excellent and the tips greatly appreciated. This reinforced and enhanced all other videos I've watched. My shirt making for my men (husband and sons) is really coming along great thanks to youtubers like you. Again thank you.
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Have a great day sewing!
Wow what a labour of love this is. It must have taken you an age! I've been really intimidated by flat felled curved seams and getting my head round making a burrito. Your calm delivery and not glossing over the more fiddly bits really work for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Really appreciated.
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words.
Just watched this end to end and think my next shirt will be much better having done so, thank you so much for a very detailed yet well explained and well executed tutorial.
My pleasure! I'm glad you found the content helpful.
Outstanding tutorial Russell. Every aspect of cutting, interfacing and constructing the shirt was detailed and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us.
Thank you. I appreciate your feedback and your kindness.
Beautiful tutorial.
Thank you.
Excellent! This method also works very well for a ladies’ shirt. Thank you so much.
You are quite welcome!
Best shirt video on RUclips.
You are very kind - thank you!
The video is really informative in that you give so many useful tips and you explain really well why you are doing something. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate the feedback!
You have great skills, clearly demonstrated, thanks
Thank you!
Wonderful video. Thank you so much for posting!
My pleasure. And thank you for taking the time to post.
My first time on your channel. I learned a lot. Thank you 😊.
My pleasure!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
You're welcome!
Thank you for this video. Very helpful to all beginners.
My pleasure!
Lots of good information and a good looking shirt. There are a lot of details in this method that are more refined than some of the other ones i've watched. New sub.
Thank you for your kind words!
What a great video, so much detail
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for a very excellent tutorial. Many useful tips. I learned a lot.
My pleasure!
Beautiful sewing. Thanks
It is really hard to find somebody sewing long sleeve flat felled seams. Thank you for showing that it can be done!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a clear, concise and pleasant way. You have helped me so much! I refer back to this video all the time! I would love to see you construct a sports jacket, or a blazer. Thank you again.
My pleasure. As I have time, I'll post more techniques and put your request in the cue!
WONDERFUL VIDEO THANK YOU!
My pleasure!
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much! I was having a very hard time trying to follow a pattern for a shirt I'm working on and I found everything I was confused about in this video (the rolling method and finishing all the seams).
My only recommendation for your channel in general is to make your video thumbnails a picture of the finished product (you can still include your logo and text of what the video is) in order to make it easier to scroll through your channel to find other videos I'm interested in watching (and to make it more attractive and easier for people when they're searching for any video to pick yours out). You have great content and are a great resource, so I'd love for others to watch your videos!
I appreciate your input and your kind words - thank you!
Thank you that was so clear and helpful x
You're quite welcome!
Yes!
❤❤ Thank you soo much!! 😊😊
I have made (self taught) quite an array of "lairy" shirts for my hubby - he has always been unconventional in his tastes, but very conventional in his style of shirt - go figure. This tutorial has been amazing for me, as it has explained the bits I always dread. Many many thanks amazing tutorial & hoping after a while, when I look at the shirts I have made, I will be less critical of my work. Hugs xxxx
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful.
Thank you sooooo much.🙏🙏
My pleasure!
Beautiful
You are most welcome.
i've found the information really helpfull, thank you!
You're welcome!
Amazing tutorial. So glad I found this :) thank you. Actually so glad I took the time to watch this before doing my first shirt! I’m going to go and get a stiletto :) also love the flossing technique!
Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm glad it was helpful for you.
Wow! How you sewed that yoke to the front was diabolical!!! You give me confidence to try making a dress shirt myself... thanks! Very, very cool and helpful video...thank you very much!
You are very welcome! And kudos for word usage - I'm going to add "diabolical" to my sewing descriptions!
Lol! Do you have, or can you make a video explaining the best fabrics to use (100% cotton, different grades thereof and where to purchase, etc..)for men’s dress shirt? I was going to try my first effort using 100% cotton fabric from one of the ‘big box’ fabric stores, but my goal is to make a shirt using the best fabric possible. It is a little confusing and intimidating when you start looking at all the various options...
Thanks again, your channel is very professional and your method of explanation is top of the mark on RUclips. Seriously, I’ve watched many, many and your channel is superior imho.
@@zefdin101 I don't have a video, but you'll find if you ask for "shirting" you'll be in good shape. For the most part, it is offered in 100% cotton, but be sure when you purchase.
Excellent video! One request, can you list up all the seam allowances in the description? The shirt is unlined so I’m curious how those raw edges are folded and finished (sleeve seam, armhole seam, cuff seam)
Great job! Thanks
My pleasure.
Very informational. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome!
that was enormously helpful. thank you. :)
You're welcome.
You're welcome!
great video !!!
Thank you!
Thanks
You're welcome!
Wonderful sir
I appreciate that. Thank you!
This is one of the best videos on this platform I have come across for learning how to sew a mens shirt. Thank you.
Thank you. I appreciate your kind words.
Perfect video, please make a video on cutting also.
On my list!
Ooooohhh thank you dear !!!!
You're welcome 😊
Very smart! (thread around the needle in the collar point)
Thank you!
I'm subscribed!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing... Just subscribed 👍
You're welcome!
Great video, thank you! I've been wanting to have a go at a shirt for a while (casual soft collar shirt) but wasn't exactly sure how to go about sewing the flat felled seam down the sleeves. I'd read about having to make a little 'bird's nest' but it is the first time I've found a video that actually shows it (even if only briefly). Maybe you could expand on this a little in a future video?
Thanks for your input! I'll see what I can do to get a video uploaded specific to flat felled seams.
Your tip for guiding the seams using an ironed edge was a game changer. Also, this new collar is looking waaaay less wonky. I’m making my boyfriend a garment for the first time and your help is really appreciated, thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words. Have a great day sewing!
I am so happy I came across this video! Really well explained and so much of attention to detail - thank you! Any chance of creating a video on how to measure and cut the material for this shirt; sometime in the future? Once again, thank you!
Thanks for your kind words and suggestion. I'll see what I can do!
The SewpBox would be highly appreciated! Thank you :)
Tank you 🇩🇿
You're welcome!
Thank you for this tutorial.
❤❤❤❤
I love this pattern
(would it be possible to show how to draft this type of shirt for 13 years and above?
I struggle to find shirt pattern drafting for teenagers.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Thank you for your kind words. I teach men's pattern drafting at LATTC in Los Angeles. Are you local?
Omgosh! Amazing tutorial. My first attempt at a Shirt from a pattern wasn't too bad, but the Placket😔🤭 was a disaster. The triangle was off at the top, I nearly burnt the skin off my finger tips trying to hold down the turn down at the top of it. 🤫 I will be trying again on scrap fabric. Thank you for your detailed video.💞
My pleasure!
@@SewpBox I hope one day my shirts look that immaculate 🌷
@@jaelldixon I have not doubt they will!
I'm using this to help me make my first shirt. (womens, but doesn't matter) just did the yoke, and it worked beautifully. next step, get rid of the silly interfacing nonsense, and then collar.
Good luck!
my shirting is coming along really well, thanks to your video. But now,, please... fly front zipper tutorial? I love the look of men's tailored clothing for women, no one really makes beautiful pants for us, so I'm teaching myself.
Sorry for the delay! I'll see what I can do to get some posted. Look for them in the next few weeks.
Thanks for a great video on the making of a man’s shirt. In the video you mention rock sands glue base, when sewing the flat fell seam attaching the sleeve. Can you give me more information on this please. Thanks
Roxanne's glue baste. I use it (or Elmer's school glue) sometimes to glue seams in place before sewing.
Great video. I've been thinking of making my own shirt, is it hard to develop a custom pattern?
Nicely demonstrate 👏👏 can u also show how to take measurements and then cutting the cloth for shirt
I appreciate your feedback. It's on my list of things to do!
Was nice your vid, hope you can upload how to make shirt patterns!
Thank you!
If your not on Instagram, you should be. People need to see this.
Thank you, Ben. My Instagram handle is @SewpBox1.
Thanks for an excellent tutorial. Why do bespoke tailors add darts to shirts? Can't the same fit be achieved by altering the pattern? After all, the darts simply reduce material at specific points across the body.
You can pass darts to the side seam if they are small - let's say less than 1/2". However, it is most optimal to distribute shaping around the entirety of the body for better fit.
Thank you for your great instructions! I was wondering what topstitch length you recommend the sleeve placket, and what kind of interfacing for the collar and cuffs?
My pleasure. Stitch length is predicated on fabric weight. I would suggest 14-16 spi. I use a fusible woven interfacing (shirt collar/cuff interfacing) I purchase from J & M Tailor Supply in Los Angeles.
First to view! First to Like!
Thanks! More to come..
Nice dart trick
Thank you!
Hello, I was wondering what type of interfacing you recommend for collars, front bands , and cuffs.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you very much. One question: is it possible to leave the interfacing in the collar and cuffs floating? What effect does that have on the overall shirt?
You could float the interfacing, but you'll lose the crispness of both the collar and cuffs.
Thank you so much Russell fir this video, but can you share your patterns please.
great video! It really helps... one question, how wide are the bindings on the sleeve placket? I am doing a mens shirt large and want to get the measurements right on that part.
Thank you. They finish about 1/2" wide.
Thank you for your speedy reply, Russell. I have one more question. What shirt pattern do you recommend, or do you make your own? I really do enjoy your instructional videos!
Sorry, but I don't have a recommendation. I draft my own patterns (and teach men's pattern drafting and tailoring at Los Angeles Trade Technical College), but have been asked to make a pattern available. When I get the opportunity, I'll endeavor to do that!
Can you recommend a pattern for custom dress shirts like this? Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I know how long it takes to setup shots and edit. Well done.
I appreciate your feedback - thank you. It's been a long time since I've used a commercial pattern. Unfortunately, I don't have a recommendation. But you're not the first (and likely not the last) to ask! I'm going to see what I can do to produce a pattern in the near future. Feel free to follow up with me at Russell@SewpBox.com.
Very well instructed!👍🏻 Where does one source nice fabric for a shirt like this? Thanks for taking the time to make this video!👍🏻
B B. Black and Sons in Los Angeles. They also ship. Another local resource it's International Silks and Woolens.
@@SewpBox thank you!👍🏻
I absolutely loved the tutorial! Where can we find the pattern and the fabric you used?
Thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful. The fabric is several years old and I have no recollection where I purchased it locally in Los Angeles. I drafted this pattern, but the instruction works for any dress shirt pattern.
Awesome video..please i need to know how to cut it
Thank you. I'll see what I can do to post a tutorial on cutting.
I did not watch the whole video yet. But you start off with saying it is classically fitted. I like to wear my shirts extremely fitted. Is it just a matter of getting the right size and making the darts deeper? Or does slim fit imply more than that?
Fit trumps fashion every time! The techniques shown here demonstrate construction only. They are based on a fitted shirt in that it has shaping built into it that give a more fitted silhouette. It's always best practice to sew up a muslin first to correct fit, then to do the final construction.
This is a really good tutorial with lots of good tips, thanks for making it. I have a question please: Do you make the rolled hem at the bottom of the shirt before or after you have made the flat felled seams at the sides of the shirt? I’m struggling with this myself at the moment. What should come first; hemmed bottom or felled side seams? Thanks very much.
The hem is done last.
@@SewpBox oh interesting! Thanks very much!
What a great video. I have never seen a Shirt made before.
I want to know if a long sleeve Shirt can be taken apart and
remade into a smaller size, from a Large to Medium.
Jeff
Thank you! With rare exception, most garments can be made into a smaller size. Not to say there aren't complications, but it is definitely possible.
Thank you for your reply.
Jeff@@SewpBox
Hi! My husband uses cufflinks, do you know if the sleeve placket need to be any different?
Thanks!
Sorry. I just saw this. The placket can remain the same.
Google.
Thank you so much for this well explained tutorial Russell,is the pattern available? Hello fro Bath U.K.
My pleasure. The pattern is one I drafted. I'm hopeful to make it available in the next few months. Feel free to check back!
you have answered many questions without asking. i couldn’t get the name of the product u used on shoulder sleeve joining before doing stitching thankyou.
Sorry for the late reply. I'm not certain to which product you are referring. If you can give me a bit more information, I'll see what I can do to assist.
First, thank you for the great instructions. Is it possible for you to show how to alter a commercial pattern?
Hi, Rosalinda. You are quite welcome. I'll be happy to put it on my list!
Hi sir super and good
Thank you!
Hey Russell,
Thanks for the awesome video! How do you measure to make sure all of your cutouts are correct? is there a guideline you can point me to online somewhere? or maybe somewhere where you can get a general template? thanks so much!
Hi, Kyle. I'm not clear about your question regarding cutouts. If you'll describe your question further for me, I'll see if I can assist.
Hey@@SewpBox ,
I didn't do a good job of wording that. I mean how do you know what size to cut for all your different peices that make the shirt? How do you go about measuring and knowing what size peices will make what size shirt?
@@kylel200 If you're flat pattern drafting, you are drafting to a specific size, creating all the pieces for that size and adding seam allowances. If you're using a commercial pattern, by and large multiple sizes are built into the pattern. To determine what size to cut from a commercial shirt pattern, use your chest measurement to determine what size shirt to cut. Don't always rely upon the recommended size, however. Check the chest ease in the pattern. You want to make sure it reflects the silhouette you are looking for. 4"-6" of ease is pretty standard (the less ease, the slimmer the fit.)
