Forgive you for being overly thorough????.....are you kidding me!!!! This is by far the BEST HOW TO video I came across since I’ve started sewing!!!! Thank you for “being thorough”! Your a great teacher!!!
I really appreciate that, seriously. I'd rather make a video that's longer if its more complete than a very short video that leaves people confused. Thank for watching!
Agreeed 1000% !! I’m making my first ever dress shirt and I keep rewatching this for all your pointers and tips ❤️ I hate reading patterns, plus I didn’t have one so this helped so much!

I've been seeing for 63 years. Learned on my grandma's treadle. Wish I had something this good way back when. Also great to see a man doing this. I taught my son to sew and he was able to help his daughter when she wanted to learn. Good job.
Without a doubt. Tock is so precise and makes things so easy to understand....he takes the fear out of trying something new. He's an amazing instructor. Tock you ROCK! Thank youuu!
I could not disagree in the slightest!!! Really impressed with the production and after watching this I KNOW I can make a shirt :D Hats off to you sir and many thanks :)
You cannot be "overly thorough" enough. I love your detailed instructions. Thanks again for sharing your skill with everyone. I can't wait to see more.
Thank you so much for saying that, when I was new at sewing, nobody made videos that explained everything in detail, so I try to make thorough videos with large projects. Have a wonderful weekend!
You have literally the best sewing tutorials on RUclips. I've been frustrated to tears by other 'tutorials' that just look pretty with no actual information or explanation. You're so thorough without being condescending and without rambling. I do not understand why so many sewing/cooking/crafting tutorials include their grandmother's and supporting character's backstories as well as a brief history of Poland. Seriously, thank you.
Im 42 and haven't sewed since 5th grade. My girl friend gifted me a Singer start 1304 sewing machine for the Holidays. You sir are the first I didn't feel talked down to, and have now subscribed. Thank you.
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment. When I'm filming, I try to talk as if I were teaching a friend of mine how to learn something new. I'm really happy you picked up on that. Hope you enjoy getting into making some cool projects this year! Thanks for your support :)
I've just made my son a shirt having never touched a sewing machine before. After trawling RUclips for weeks I can confidently say the only reason I started it was because of your superb tutorial. Legend.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this comment. So happy you were able to make a shirt for your son, and very proud to have a small part in that process. Hope you have a terrific week!
You, sir, have a great knack for teaching. I love that there's not any extraneous chit-chat or music. You tell exactly what to do, how to do it and why, and by doing so, you instill confidence in your viewers. The close-ups are important and well done. Excellent tutorial, one of the best I've seen and I've watched many. Thank you very much--from a new subscriber.
Ive seen so many women doing videos like this yet nerver as easy to understand and never as detailed thank you so much for helping my autistic mind finally undertand where i am going wrong i now have more confidence to sew my own clothing ❤
I'm a bit late to the party, i'm just reviving a former interest in sewing and FINALLY a tutorial that doesn't exacerbate my fatigue and attention deficit with faff and extensive ad-lib. Really appreciate that you actually talk us through the pattern instructions WITH some demo. Plus you're easy to listen to.
I can’t thank you enough for your work here. I’m a newbie who has only sewn straight shapes (pillows, duvet covers, etc.) and your videos are amazing. I’m learning much and it’s giving me the tools and (hopefully) confidence to try this. And as a guy, I really appreciate your working in stuff for other men. THANK YOU.
I bought a heavy duty sewing machine so I could do repairs to my hot air balloon. I watched quite a few beginner videos before I found Tock Custom. I subscribed within a few minutes realizing I had found the Holy Grail of tutorials! Your videos have inspired me to do so much more with my machine. Thank you!!!
Just finished my first shirt. I wouldn't have even tried if not for this video. I'm a 61 yo man and this was my 2nd sewing project, my 1st was covid mask. Great job Chris.
You are now my best friend. I really appreciate your video you taught me how to make my son Star Wars shirt step by step. And he loves it keep up the good work. Thank you Thank you Thank you 🙏
Wow this is the lengthiest most comprehensive you tube tutorial I've ever watched. I could listen to him all day. I've never touched a sewing machine before but I feel confident about attempting a shirt from scratch as a result. Thank you so much for the effort to create such thorough and well explained videos.
I truly appreciate your positive feedback! Please let me know if you end up making a shirt (or anything else). I get really excited about inspiring people to start creating. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!
Two words. WoW! and THANK YOU! Ive taken many a sewing class, purchased MANY a dvd, book and not to mention watched countless of vids here on YT. NONE of them have explained in such easy to follow detail as you have here, nor had the professional outcome as you have shown. This is a game changer for me in my sewing. Can not say THANK YOU enough! Ive struggled in certain areas ie collar bands repeatedly until now. Also, finally sleeve install that does not include those hideous gathers- BRILLIANT! This vid just CLICKED for me. TY! TY! TY!
Thank you so much for such a positive and wonderful comment!! I'm so happy this was so helpful :) Hope you're already off to making some amazing new things this week. I really appreciate you watching!
I’m a first year college fashion student and this semester we have to sew a button up shirt from scratch. Because of covid we don’t have access to laboratories and must to figure out most of the things by ourselves- this tutorial was so damn helpful, it covered everything very throughly. Thanks for your work! I’m grateful 😊
I'm so happy this was so helpful, I couldn't find any other videos on this on RUclips, so I figured I'd make my own. Your shirt is gonna look bad ass when you're finished!
I'm 61 and decided to learn after helping my wife understand her new Baby Lock Verve (she has a hard time understanding instructions or tutorials). It was enjoyable and I didn't want all that money to go to waste so I will help her to get the most out of it. Haven't seen many other tutorials on basic sewing techniques, but I'm enjoying yours very much.
Thank you for this. I'm a tall fellow and am tired of never wearing anything that fits. I don't have a sewing machine yet, and I've lived a life of t-shirts and jeans, but I'd really like to both have and make my own style, and this kind of video is exactly what I need. I will be coming back to this when I get started with my own sewing machine.
This was the best tutorial I've found so far. I absolutely adire him for including his flaw, and how to fix it. I prefer humans teaching me how to sew things.
I do not know how to sew I have a sewing machine for around 8 years sitting just for me to look at it so now it got into me that I want to make me a shirt I bought this pattern and watch every video available about it and with no doubt your video is the best there is so I feel that it is possible that I can do it with the help of your tutorials. Thanks so much 👍
Thank you for this! I have sewn my first shirt, and I did it well, thanks to you! My partner who's the one wearing it is also happy. It's nice to see good tutorials on mens clothes and you explain so well!
I'm pretty new to sewing and have been watching a lot of tutorial videos to learn new techniques. This is the first shirt tutorial where I can actually clearly understand what I'm seeing; the level of detail is very helpful. I'm looking forward to trying this out myself!
Great tutorial, beautifully sewn, thoughtfully presented! Steps are clear and simple which I appreciate. Some patterns are not so simple to understand, a source of frustration for me. Your pocket collection is a cool idea and a portfolio of your creative shirts. Coffee...hell ya.
Thank you so much for so many amazing compliments in one comment! It really helps to hear that after putting so much work into just one video. Hope you're able to make some great new shirts now!
Hi and thank you. another brilliant tutorial having two sons and my husband I’m going to be very busy making shirts for them. I’m from UK 🇬🇧 thank you for your time.
I love your calm but enthusiastic presentation, very well thought out and thorough. I think that arm holes and sleeves are strange bedfellows, born from the same cloth but never stop bickering, like two kids in the back seat. Your patient approach to them is nice.
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful compliment! Sleeves are always a pain in the ass, but with practice they get WAY easier. Hope you're doing terrific, thanks a ton for watching :)
@@TockCustom You're welcome, great channel! I'm upcycling a welder's jacket and it's a XXL but I'm a large. The sleeves also have pleats and folds under the arm. can you suggest a way to alter them to get smaller? The chest and back seem pretty straightforward.
Take a bow Tok! I am impressed with what you have accomplished as a self-taught sewist. Your teaching skills are great, and the quality of your video is above average. I really appreciate the timber of your voice. It is much easier on my hearing aids than many of the female instructors.
You make great tutorials for sewing, I was recently left TONS of sewing supplies and fabric and this was actually very informative compared to a lot of sewing tutorials.
I'm new to sewing and this shirt was on of my first clothing projects. I got so frustrated because I couldn't understand te pattern. And then here you are! You saved my project and now I made such a nice shirt for my husband. And manymore are to come thanks to you!!
I was fully engaged whilst watching this and didn’t even notice how long it was until I went to pause it to respond to a text - AND THAT NEVER HAPPENS; I do not watch RUclips videos this long unless it’s a video podcast. Even better yet, I switched back to the RUclips app to continue watching AND finished the video, so you should be really chuffed with yourself. Goes to show that you are very engaging and I WILL be using your channel as a point of reference from now on so thank you!
There's a storm gonna blow through the UK this weekend so gonna batton down the hatches so there's no better time to follow your great tutorial and start my shirt.Thank you so much for taking the time to make a great tutorial that's really well thought out and presented.
Stay safe during the storm this weekend! Thank you so much for appreciating the time and work I put into this video - I'm so happy to share what I've learned, hope you make some terrific new shirts soon :)
I keep coming back to this video because it keeps me from making mistakes. I was gifted a sewing machine and decided that pillows and such were too easy for a beginner. I made my first ever project (this style of shirt) following your tutorial. It was not only a success, but my mother (70 years of sewing), sister (45 years of sewing), and niece (15 years, and a degree in clothing design) all were beyond impressed with how well the shirt came out. I owe this and credited such to your tutorial. Because of your video I now have a passion for sewing and tailoring my own clothing. Thank you again sir.
I can't reiterate enough the numerous comments before me of what a wonderful teacher you are! I think you're the first male teacher I've listened to in a predominantly female craft and quickly found I prefer listening to you and how you teach. You clearly and concisely explain everything in a smooth easy going manner which makes it easy for someone to listen, watch and really learn what you're showing. I had no clue of how to read or start beginner sewing with a pattern but you broke it down, clearly explained each part and showed it's really not that complicated. Btw, your voice is audio listener's gold! I'm mind blown, haha! I have only quilted with my sewing experience (20+ quilts), but have wanted to learn how to sew clothes but was intimidated by it. My grandmother was a seamstress (made all my high school dance dresses), and did alterations for people so this skill has been one I have wanted to learn. Thank you, thank you for your videos and offering to teach this skill. Subscribed!
Wow... thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful and thoughtful message 💕 It means so much to offer help to anyone who needs it! Hope you're having fun working on projects this summer ☀️ 🤗
Thanks so much for this Chris! I'm new to this, having sewed with my mother when I was young. I won't be starting out on advanced projects like this one, but I'm inspired and encouraged by what you do! Sewing was one more thing I wanted to learn during lockdown, and I'm confident I'll learn everything I need to know from your videos. You keep making 'em, we'll keep watching 'em! Best wishes!
I really appreciate such a thoughtful comment Marius, thanks for watching, and I'm very happy I could help inspire and teach you to get back into sewing. Please let me know if you need any help, and feel free to share what you're making with me!
New here. Stumbled across your video while searching for scan n cut. Clicked on your page and found all these sewing videos. This tutorial was absolutely fabulous!! I'm hooked! Now watching all of your videos. I haven't sewn in 40 years. Never made anything with buttons. Bought a serger and couldn't figure it out. Wow, I want to dig all my stuff out and sew again. It's great seeing a man sew! Keep up the good work and Thanks for sharing your talent.
I'm so happy you're getting back into it, and that these videos are so helpful! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see. Thank you very much for your support, and thanks for watching 😊
If you ever put together a beginner to advanced sewing course on DVD or online I’d totally buy it! 🤙 P.S. Be happy to pay a hundred bucks for it. I’ve paid thousands of dollars for college classes where I didn’t learn a damn thing, plus you teach better than 90% of the professors I had in college! Lol
Wow, that's a huge compliment! This is kind of a side-job for me, so I'm happy to just share everything I know for free when I have time to make new videos. Maybe I'll write a book someday, but until then, I love doing these tutorials :) Thanks for your support my friend!
This guy is an awesome teacher, he reminds me of my eighth grade social studies teacher... he not only looks like him but he even talks like him! Amazing. Best teacher ever!
I have not sewed in 20 or 30 years. I took a Home Economics class in 1969, 1970, and 72. My Home Economics teachers would have had a field day with you. However, I think your tutorials are great and you taught me some things I did not get. so thank you. I really think you're great.
Super cool, another great video I cannot wait to try out. Laugh anytime you say "I don't know if you can see those marks on camera, but I can see them just fine.." I know ifs not meant to say we are blind, but that's how I imagine it every time lol I know you are just referencing the ability to see white chalk on camera against the fabrics. Great job on that shirt!
Awesome! Hope you're able to make some great new shirts! Yeah, when I'm filming, I can't really see what the final video will look like... so I say things like that about the notches sometimes. Thanks for watching, hope you're doing amazing!
YOU. ARE. AMAZING. I conquered my fear of the sewing machine and pattern-reading with your easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions. AND - I made a shirt! First time on the sewing machine and I can't believe I did that. Thank you so so much. I'll be watching your other videos and learning along!
I love your tutorials so much - “cut the b*shirt and get to the point” 😉 There’s nothing more frustrating than a video that is monologue without any important information, and it’s also way too long. You skip it, you miss something, have to go back and listen to a crap again. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS!
Thank you so much for your thorough tutorials. Sometimes the text made your demo hard to see, but that was minor compared to all the great info we got.
Great video, it saved my keester when my 12 yr. old wanted only specific print button down shirts, and I didnt want him going to middle school with home made looking clothes...very professional finish.
I'm a Maintenance Technician at several University Student Housing Apartments. Every year students move out and leave sooo many items behind, (furniture, electronics, clothing, etc). Last july, a resident happened to leave a very old sewing machine, a Bernette 320. I've never sewn before, but my stepmother always has since I remember growing up. I decided to take it to her so she can test if it worked. It worked perfectly and even had extra accessories in storage compartments. Because of the current Covid-19 situation, at the end of March or beginning of April, face masks became mandatory in my county. I decided to make my own. So I started using that Bernette machine and immediately found an interest in the sewing craft. I've already bought 3 other machines, (Singer Fashion Mate, Singer ProFinish, and a Singer Futura Quartet) they might not be the best but are doing me good. After doing facemasks, I started practicing several sewing techniques and doing other small projects. I'm soo interested in doing my first collared dress shirt. After watching several vids, yours was the most explained. You showed in detail how some parts come together that had me doubting I could make a shirt. Thankyou for your vid, definitely gained a fan and subscriber. 👋😁👍
This is such a cool story! Thank you for sharing your experience with how to got started, and how you've been making some amazing new projects. I certainly fell in love with sewing by accident, so I totally get it... but I still get such a thrill when I make something impressive for either myself or to family and friends :) Let me know if there's any other videos you'd like to see as you're learning new techniques! Thanks a ton for your positive comment :D
I have been quarantined with bronchitis. You video was absolutely the best use of my time and distracted me from feeling so bad. Thank you for helping save my sanity!!!❤
Another great video my friend! I am sure that I will be watching this many times, but I am excited to make a shirt. Need to get some more experience first, but I definitely will be trying it soon. Thanks for being so thorough, it really helps to not make a mistake. Also, I saw the extra pocket fabric for a shirt that I have from you!!!!
Hi, I'm 73 and had just bought this McCall's pattern 6044 . I had (almost) finished a shirt a few years ago, and was a little intimidated by the prospect of making a mess of this. However, your step by step guide is perfect for me. I'll start cutting out today. Many thanks. John McCarthy, Ireland
Catastrophic failures always end up in a huge dose of education. I learn almost nothing from success, thankfully I've failed a lot in my life lol Thanks for watching, hope you have a great weekend!
I’m brand new to sewing so sorry if this a dumb question but how do you make an XL pattern from a pattern that only goes from SM, M, L??? Would really, really appreciate your help. I’m a brand new subscriber an absolutely love your channel! You make sewing look cool even though I’m still not telling anyone I’m learning how to do it!!! 🤫😂
I hid my sewing from people too for a while until I started making some really cool shit... then they were just super jealous and wanted me to make them clothes all the time lol So MOST patterns (especially for men) come in 2 variations: S-M-L - and then the same exact pattern for XL-2XL-3XL When you're looking at patterns, make sure you get the size bracket your looking for. Same thing for jeans too, it'll be like, 28-36 in waist, and then 38-46 in waist... etc. Hope that helps!
Tock Custom you are the greatest. I got a sewing machine at the beginning of the pandemic and you have taught me how to sew. I've followed your videos and am now confident enough to adapt what you have taught me to other projects. Thank you, you are a great teacher and the videos are so clear, Thank you!
Thank you so much for the comment Joe! Happy to hear you've been enjoying learning and making some new stuff. It's great that you're already at the point where you're applying some of these techniques to other projects too :) I appreciate your support, thanks a ton for the comment!
I'm still trying to finish my fursuit, but after I get it done I want to try and make a button down shirt. I don't have a serger, and my sewing machine doesn't do embroidery (I wish I spent the extra money and got one that did), so mine won't be exactly like this one.
You do not 'need' a serger to make this shirt - the only time you really need one is if you're planning to sell clothing, or give them out as gifts. If you make clothing for yourself, nobody will ever know weather or not your seams are overlocked on the inside lol
That was one of the biggest reasons why I have not bought my machine yet, I wanted to go for a machine I would not "grow out of" too quickly. However, like Tock said, you can still make some great clothes and other sewn items without having super fancy or specific machines. Anyone I give a gift to, better be grateful I make them anything at all!! lol
I have made shirts before and didn’t find it crisp enough. Through your tutorial I understood finally how I lined up my collar wrong. I am so thankful, my shirt game has changed!
This is probably my first time commenting on a video ever but I thought it was important you know that this was the best tutorial that I have ever seen of anything and I’m glad it’s sewing. Not many can teach and do! Bravo!
I've been looking for a detailed tutorial on pattern reading for some time. I'm a self taught sewing hobbiest and am intrigued by garment patterns, but every time i get into it, I get overwhelmed and confused. This instructional has cleared up soooooo much of that confusion and now I feel prepared to take my sewing to the next level. Thank you!!!!
You have my attention! I am a quilter, but I have always wanted to make clothes. Have tried, and suck at it, but that comes from teaching yourself something you have no idea how to do. Thank you for breaking it down and slowing it down. Will definitely give it another shot.
Thanks for watching! I suck at quilting myself, so I totally understand what you're saying. I'm sure if I gave it an honest shot, it wouldn't be so bad :)
This is the most helpful tutorial I've ever seen. I'm a man who started sewing in 2017 and I've always wanted to make my own shirts. After watching this video, I believe I can do it! And a funny coincidence, but I learned to use a machine by taking a beginner's sewing course at JoAnn's. BTW - your tutorial on different stitches is also amazing. Thanks, Chris.
Thank you Tock Custom for making this very informative video. I first watch your video summer of last year. Since then I’ve made 7 shirts. It’s crazy to see the progression from the first to the last shirt. You’re a very good teacher and I just want to say thank you for your time and effort and sharing your knowledge and wisdom.
Slowly working on a shirt for the very first time as a new sewer! I probably spent over an hour pinning and sewing the first sleeve. I did a decent job, just on minor pleat. It is a practice shirt though with cheap fabric so I don't mind. Thank you for all of the amazing tutorials! Can't wait to finish the shirt later!
Yeah pinning and sewing sleeves for the first time was strange, I felt like I was doing in wrong. It gets WAY easier with some practice. Later in the video I show how to correct those pleats too, so you can usually fix anything (plus most people will NEVER notice if you made a mistake). Thanks for watching, happy it was helpful :)
Great job, it's been years since I've sewn. However, my granddaughter is 6 years old now. We bought her a Singer M1000 to teach her how to sew, your tutorials are refreshing me since my days in tailoring in high school over 42 years. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, I know exactly what it took to acquire your craft. I'll be following along no doubt, stay safe & God bless you. 🙏👍
Thank you for this video. As a another male sewer with no experience I got a cheap sewing machine and embarked on making a shirt from a Vogue pattern (certainly they are some of the most complicated), I eventually got it made and have made many more from easier patterns. However the difficult things I have found have been collars and sleeves. Next time I make a shirt I will follow your instruction for the collar and work slowly through it. With patterns I have used they have show putting the sleeves in once the side seams have been sown. It is a horrendous task and I stopped doing it that way and had come to the same way as you do, sewing the sleeve in on the flat. I've really picked up some great tips from you, thank you for producing such instructive videos.
Great video. Just finished my first shirt. My family was pretty impressed. Came out alright. A little jacked up. Couldn't have done it without your video. The pattern instructions might as well be in Arabic.
Hahaha, hey my first shirts sucked pretty bad (and I still have them). They will ALWAYS get better and better each time you make one (and you'll do them faster too). Keep with it, and people wont be able to tell if you bought it or made it, and that's a fun feeling 😊
I've made a shirt before, but I still come back to this video to revise over some details. Still by far the best and most thorough sewing video I've seen.
Thanks! Been sewing since pandemic (mostly fun print pullover knits) , and you have been with me all the way. I got frustrated with the pattern for my first button down, so I tossed it and came to you. (It came out great, for a first-time). You are SUCH a great teacher. You explanations have just the right amount of detail , your camera work is spot on, and your overall manner is just fab. Your channel is the first place I go when I want to learn a new technique. Cheers, dude.
Omg thank you soooo much for the donation! So happy this has been helpful to you and your new projects :) Hope you're making some wicked new stuff for the summer. Let me know if there's something else you'd like to learn along the way, and thanks again for watching!
I have been sewing for about a year but have never tackled collars, button holes and buttons before. I have just completed this shirt for my husband by following your tutorial from start to finish and it turned out really good, he loves it. Thank you for such clear, uncomplicated instructions, now he wants another one !!!
You are so clear and easy to understand and your teaching method is just the right speed. Its also much nicer that you don’t have music in the background to distract. Thank you so much. I will subscribe to hear more of your tutorials.
Dude. You are so awesome. My mother taught all 6 of us kids how to sew at a very young age. I make a lot of my pants and shirts. It's so cool to see other guys sewing.
I just completed my 2nd shirt: Tread Theroy Fair Field Button Up Shirt. This was a greater challenge because this shirt has flat felled seams, sleeves placket and yoke. The pattern includes a 19 page booklet of procedures that includes a fail safe way of attaching the collar. Don't stop with one shirt. Make more and keep learning. Tock's video was certainly a great start.
THANK YOU! I am trying to sew from a pattern and some of the directions are Greek to me. So helpful to see the pieces laid out and assembled in real-time.
Thank you so much for making this tutorial. I bought that shirt pattern a couple of months ago, but have been trying to get the courage up to try and make a shirt. Your tutorial gives me the confidence that I can do it. I'm a quilter, so this will be my first garment. And I have a TON of Kaffe Fassett fabric that will be fun in making shirts. Thanks again!
Oh man I used to watch those videos! God that was a long time ago. I can't wait to get back into making videos again, it's been a while, but there will be more 😀😀😀
This means a lot to me. Its super hard to upload such a long video and expect people to watch the whole thing lol. I guess the people who really want to learn how to make a shirt will watch though! Thank you so much, hope you're having a terrific week!
I am 56. My daughter is getting married in January. Being shall we say an overly robust female (Fat) finding dress clothes, that do not make me look like a can of exploding biscuits or Michelin tire guy. I decided to sew me a dress. Now understand only things I have sewed were simple things like shorts or halters or skirts or pants as a teen or barbie clothes and stuffed dolls for my daughter. That was 25 to 40 more years ago. My Mom taught me. My grandmother I helped cut and piece quilts. So decided to carry on family tradition of making my own MOB dress. Got the pattern. It's similar to other store bought dresses and just requires better quality material. So I have been hunting videos for pointers since only mentors I know have either passed or live 800 miles away. You sir have some of the best videos I have seen. You have made doing sleeves look easy compared to others. You walked through how to use the interface and place it. My issue is my dress is going to be lace over satin dress and I am having hell of a time finding videos of how to sew satin let alone sew lace fabric onto satin. Is there anyposibility you could teach something like that. Thank you again for not talking down to me as a viewer and giving step by step instructions. Making confident I have not forgotten the basics. But still shaky on the fabric.
Thank you for being genuinely helpful, flaws and all. No fluff, just the facts, and I appreciate your logic. There's quite a bit of reverse thinking while sewing and you are able transition we novices without confusion. THAT is a gift! 🙌
Learning to sew as a 54 year old man in Australia is a challenge. Your videos as brilliant. I've taken some beginners courses and have just bought this pattern and made it with you.. you make everything so clear and easy to follow. My shirt is exactly as I want it. Thanks so much for going over overstep so perfectly. I've tried other sights and when I found yours all my fears were over. Thanks man
Mate, this is fantastic. The best sewing tute ever. Informative and concise. The way you walk us "noobs" thorough the arcane world of reading patterns and operating a sewing machine is priceless. I've just completed my first shirt, as per this very pattern, today. It's "Fathers Day" over here this weekend (Down Under) and I wore my new shirt out to lunch. The wife and kids were so impressed that they have placed orders! As you said, there were challenges: The sleeves are a b**** but mine turned out okay. I stuffed up matching one side the collar stand to the front thingy. (You can't see it unless you do a strip search. You said that you needed to be precise. I wasn't. I'll have another go at it.) I did use "flat felled seams", where possible (shoulders and sewing front and back panels) and the results were good. Not perfect but good. (I don't have a serger.) As soon as my kids show me how to work Instagram, I'll send you a photo. Thank you.! Keep up the great work!
Oh this is terrific! I never had any help or direction, so my first 5 or 10 shirts were pretty rough. I'd imagine your first shirt came out better than mine actually lol. Thank you so much for sharing this comment with me! It always makes me happy to hear people are finding these tutorials so helpful to create full projects :D
Made my first shirt using this video. Your instructions kept the steps that would of been frustrating very clear and easy. Thanks! I'm already starting my second shirt.
I’ve been working on a shirt for my son. It’s a 2t so it’s been a little difficult but I’m getting it. The pattern instructions were very confusing and I had to rip out and re-sew the collar stand to the shirt 3 times because I was so confused. They even have a tutorial video and it’s even more confusing. I finally got it because You made it so simple and very detailed. Thank you so much for your content. Please keep making more content. I only started sewing a few weeks ago to make masks. Watching your content has given me so much confidence and your kind words help even more. My husband isn’t going anywhere near a sewing machine and he loves watching you work. Keep up the great work. Much love ❤️
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment, I'm so happy this could be helpful to finish your project too! Let me know if there's anything else you need help with :)
Thank you so much for this video. You don’t understand how much I appreciate it. I’ve tried having my mom or grandma help me learn how to read and make stuff with patterns but they never did. I’m 22 and can finally make some cool clothes for myself. I sincerely thank you!
As an absolute beginner (I'm talking as green as green gets) these tutorials are an invaluable resource. I got scared when I open my first pattern. Thank you so much for helping me make sense of it.
I was attempting a shirt dress from a free pattern. Unfortunately the directions were sadly lacking in detail. I came across your video and was able to successfully finish my dress. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤
Just brilliant videos Tock! I’m a 50 year old bloke and never touched a sewing machine before but had a craving to do so. I’ve bought one and am following your videos. Your presentation style and explanations are spot on and you have really inspired me! Keep up the good work mate. (I already made the zipper pouch just 1 hour after unboxing the machine!). I think my wife wants a skirt now .... 😁
That's amazing!! As long as you're having fun, hopefully that'll help you stick with it and learn some great new projects. I'm moving right now, but as soon as I'm settled I'll be back in my new workshop doing new videos. Let me know if you need any help along the way!
I’m late to the party but you are my favourite sewing tutor by a country mile! Thank you for the time to put in to produce your tutorials and share your knowledge 👏👏👏
Thank for watching!
agreed I’m Muslim and it was simple
Agreeed 1000% !! I’m making my first ever dress shirt and I keep rewatching this for all your pointers and tips ❤️ I hate reading patterns, plus I didn’t have one so this helped so much!
Agreeed 1000% !! I’m making my first ever dress shirt and I keep rewatching this for all your pointers and tips ❤️ I hate reading patterns, plus I didn’t have one so this helped so much!
I agree!!! The best tutorial ever.
This is the best "How To" video on RUclips.
lol you're way too nice! Thanks for the support Uphier, seriously appreciate the love
I totally agree !
Ditto. Never too much detail.
I love... literally... everything... about this comment. Thank you soooooo much
🤣
Yes. This comment is everything that I'm currently thinking in my head as well. This man's sewing a shirt tutorial is awesome. 👏👍😭❤
" . . . a brief history of Poland." 🤣🤣🤣
Yep. Got that right!
@@TockCustom Good production values too!
Wow, thanks! That was a lot of compleiments, but I'll take them all!! Hope you having a wonderful week 😊😊
Ive seen so many women doing videos like this yet nerver as easy to understand and never as detailed thank you so much for helping my autistic mind finally undertand where i am going wrong i now have more confidence to sew my own clothing ❤
I really wish I had found your videos when I started sewing your tips and techniques are brilliant I’m now an Avid watcher thank you 👍👍👍
I'm a bit late to the party, i'm just reviving a former interest in sewing and FINALLY a tutorial that doesn't exacerbate my fatigue and attention deficit with faff and extensive ad-lib. Really appreciate that you actually talk us through the pattern instructions WITH some demo. Plus you're easy to listen to.
Wow finally found someone who does full tutorials and a fellow man sewer, can’t wait to watch all your other videos
Thanks a ton Steve, hope it turned out well! Thanks for letting me know this was helpful, keep having fun with some great projects :)
It's 3AM so I'm much more interested in clothes making than usual, this vid is gold
I'm so happy this was so helpful :)
Hope you're already off to making some amazing new things this week.
I got a lot out of this. Very clear explanation and a nice voice that doesn't drive you nuts. Thanks so much! I've got my first shirt!
This was the best tutorial I've found so far. I absolutely adire him for including his flaw, and how to fix it. I prefer humans teaching me how to sew things.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching and the positive comment 😊😊😊
I go back to this video each time I make a shirt - patterns so often neglect the technique aspect of things and this video addresses that very well.
That's awesome! Super happy to make shirts with you, hope you're making lots of cool stuff for the holidays :) Thanks for watching
I'm pretty new to sewing and have been watching a lot of tutorial videos to learn new techniques. This is the first shirt tutorial where I can actually clearly understand what I'm seeing; the level of detail is very helpful. I'm looking forward to trying this out myself!
This is the best explanation ever! Thanks for this video! Following and sharing to my friends.
I have watched MANY TUTORIALS ON SEWING and I must say I TRULY ENJOYED AND LEARNED A LOT. Thank you for being a GREAT TEACHER ❤🪡🧷🧵!
Hi and thank you. another brilliant tutorial having two sons and my husband I’m going to be very busy making shirts for them. I’m from UK 🇬🇧 thank you for your time.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy making some great new custom shirts for your family! Have a wonderful weekend!
I've had this pattern for about a year now. Thank you!! I finally feel like I can tackle it.
New sub! Please keep making video tutorials like this!
You can totally do it!! I'll keep the videos coming for sure
Take a bow Tok! I am impressed with what you have accomplished as a self-taught sewist. Your teaching skills are great, and the quality of your video is above average. I really appreciate the timber of your voice. It is much easier on my hearing aids than many of the female instructors.
Thank you for such a positive and thoughtful comment Susan! Very happy these videos have been helpful to you!
@@TockCustom having sewn for 50+ years I haven't tackled a button down shirt yet, but you make it look sew easy. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!🤗
You make great tutorials for sewing, I was recently left TONS of sewing supplies and fabric and this was actually very informative compared to a lot of sewing tutorials.
Thank you so much for the comment! I'm still pretty new to making videos, so it means a lot :)
Hope you enjoy using all of your new sewing stuff!
I'm new to sewing and this shirt was on of my first clothing projects. I got so frustrated because I couldn't understand te pattern. And then here you are! You saved my project and now I made such a nice shirt for my husband. And manymore are to come thanks to you!!
Dude! I just bought a freaking long sleeve pattern! Haha just to follow this great tutorial
Sweet! This pattern has a "long sleeve" or "dress shirt" variation in the pattern, I just did short sleeves to make the video a bit more simple :)
Wow this helped me so much! Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thank you so much for watching :)
Have a terrific week!
Excellent, so relaxing just watching your videos.
Awwww, thank you. I didn't realize these videos were relaxing to anybody :)
I have just sewn my first sleeve onto a shirt. There is no way I could have done that without this video. Thank you SOOOO much!!!!
Maybe I'll write a book someday, but until then, I love doing these tutorials :)
Thanks for your support my friend!
This guy is an awesome teacher, he reminds me of my eighth grade social studies teacher... he not only looks like him but he even talks like him! Amazing. Best teacher ever!
lol thanks a ton for the compliment! I just enjoy sharing what I know, happy to know it comes across well :)
Have a great weekend!
Yeah Thanks you are awesome at explaining now I can do my shirt pattern and use your references
Thanks for the positive feedback! I'm excited for you to make your own shirt! :)
Laugh anytime you say "I don't know if you can see those marks on camera, but I can see them just fine.."
I know ifs not meant to say we are blind, but that's how I imagine it every time lol I know you are just referencing the ability to see white chalk on camera against the fabrics.
I'm so happy you picked up on my style of videos! Thanks for the positive comment, I really appreciate your support :)
I certainly fell in love with sewing by accident, so I totally get it... but I still get such a thrill when I make something impressive for either myself or to family and friends :)
Let me know if there's any other videos you'd like to see as you're learning new techniques!
Thanks a ton man!! I can't wait to see what you end up making!
Happy you saw the DK Pocket too lol. Thanks for sharing the love again my friend!
Hi,
I'm 73 and had just bought this McCall's pattern 6044 . I had (almost) finished a shirt a few years ago, and was a little intimidated by the prospect of making a mess of this. However, your step by step guide is perfect for me. I'll start cutting out today. Many thanks. John McCarthy, Ireland
Excellent! Happy this was so helpful! Let me know if you ever end up finishing a new shirt!
this was so gooood i feel like im ready to make my own and fail it catastrophically
Catastrophic failures always end up in a huge dose of education. I learn almost nothing from success, thankfully I've failed a lot in my life lol
Thanks for watching, hope you have a great weekend!
The dress came out beautiful. I admire your tenacity and really appreciate your depiction of couture reality. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I hid my sewing from people too for a while until I started making some really cool shit... then they were just super jealous and wanted me to make them clothes all the time lol
So MOST patterns (especially for men) come in 2 variations:
S-M-L - and then the same exact pattern for XL-2XL-3XL
When you're looking at patterns, make sure you get the size bracket your looking for.
It's great that you're already at the point where you're applying some of these techniques to other projects too :)
I appreciate your support, thanks a ton for the comment!
Anyone I give a gift to, better be grateful I make them anything at all!! lol
So a server is just used to make the edges clean right? And a single stitch should be good enough to keep it together?
I have made shirts before and didn’t find it crisp enough. Through your tutorial I understood finally how I lined up my collar wrong. I am so thankful, my shirt game has changed!
I'm happy this was so helpful! I'm excited you'll be able to add some extra polish to your shirts :)
Hope you have a wonderful week!
This is probably my first time commenting on a video ever but I thought it was important you know that this was the best tutorial that I have ever seen of anything and I’m glad it’s sewing. Not many can teach and do! Bravo!
Wow, thank you! That's a HUGE compliment, thank you very much for taking the time so share such a positive comment with me 😊😊😊😊😊
I've been looking for a detailed tutorial on pattern reading for some time.
I few years ago I was a new sewer and I followed your steps for this pattern and my end results were awesome. I appreciate you. Thank you
This is the most helpful tutorial I've ever seen.
Please continue making these tutorials. This is the best one I’ve ever seen. Thankyou for explaining everything so clearly and detailed
I will definitely keep making some new videos for sure. Just got setup in my new studio, so more to come soon! Thanks so much for watching :D
Thank you so much! I successfully made a nice collar 😅 watching this whole video while I sew and I appreciate the step by step walk through tutorial!
Excellent, very happy this was helpful. Hope you're making some great projects so far this year :D
That's awesome! I wish I'd started sewing much earlier in my life, but it's never too late to get into a great hobby. Thanks for watching!
Sounds amazing! I totally agree with what you said - the more you make - the better each one will get 😀 Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU! I am trying to sew from a pattern and some of the directions are Greek to me. So helpful to see the pieces laid out and assembled in real-time.
Absolutely the BEST video! He explains every step in full detail, now I feel confident I can make a shirt for my husband. Thank you!!!
You are so welcome! Hope you've been able to make some terrific shirts 😊😊
I'm so glad I found this! I miss watching OLD @threadbanger tutorials, and this fills that hole. Would love to see you make a lot more creative DIYS!
Oh man I used to watch those videos! God that was a long time ago. I can't wait to get back into making videos again, it's been a while, but there will be more 😀😀😀
Usually I have a hard time staying on for long videos but yours was a breeze. Amazing and engaging teacher!
This means a lot to me. Its super hard to upload such a long video and expect people to watch the whole thing lol. I guess the people who really want to learn how to make a shirt will watch though!
Thank you so much, hope you're having a terrific week!
Thank you so much for these tutorials! I am brand new to sewing and every sewing video you have is PERFECT! The detail is so needed. 👏🙌☺️
As you said, there were challenges:
The sleeves are a b**** but mine turned out okay.
I stuffed up matching one side the collar stand to the front thingy. (You can't see it unless you do a strip search. You said that you needed to be precise. I wasn't. I'll have another go at it.)
I did use "flat felled seams", where possible (shoulders and sewing front and back panels) and the results were good. Not perfect but good. (I don't have a serger.)
As soon as my kids show me how to work Instagram, I'll send you a photo.
That's terrific! Hope the first one turned out great, they'll just keep getting better :) Thanks for watching!
You are so welcome! It truly makes me happy to be so helpful, I'd be excited to see what you're making! Thanks for watching :D
Tock, you make the best tutorials. You’re straight to the point and don’t bore me with random information. Thank you for your videos.
I’m late to the party but you are my favourite sewing tutor by a country mile! Thank you for the time to put in to produce your tutorials and share your knowledge 👏👏👏
You're not late at all, looks like you're right on time :) Thank you so much for watching!!
