I’ve been at the same level of seeing skills for 20 years. I now have the time to devote to it and was getting frustrated trying to teach myself on RUclips . Your videos are wonderful. You explain what you’re doing so well . Thank you 😊
Thank you for this tutorial! Very easy to follow. I was able to tailor a shirt at home nice and quick to be ready for a friend's wedding this upcoming weekend.
As a tall skinny guy that has no options for t shirts with logos, this is a game changer. My daughter is getting into sewing and I'm going to learn a new skill with her!
Your tutorials are just amazing. So simple to understand. I am an absolute rookie, only just bought my first ever sewing machine. I am literally waiting for my last bits of shopping to arrive so I can start sewing asap!
Hello Chris, I’m relatively new to sewing and I am absolutely delighted to have found you! Your tutorials are fantastic, you are a wonderful teacher and your instructions are crystal clear. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Very best wishes to you from Louise, Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪
Awesome tutorial! Very to the point and detailed and I appreciate you going over a longsleeve cuffed shirt at the end because I'll be doing some of those. Thank you and keep being amazing!
You are amazing! I just lost over 40 lbs and all my nice button down shirts look like tents on me. I have some that I really like and was wondering about a way to resize them ... and here you are with the easy to follow process on how to tailor them to fit! Plus I’m saving money by not having to buy new shirts. I just have a basic sewing machine, so it was very helpful when you showed how to use a zigzag stitch to finish off the inside. Thanks so much ❣️❣️❣️
Good luck with your alterations. If I can get my bobbin thread sorted out, so it will quit balling up under the fabric :( , I'm definitely going to try this. This guy has a really good video for tailoring T-shirts too...that's how I ended up here. lol (I'm supposed to be looking at Bobbin problem videos)!
Congratulations first of all, and thank you so much for using my content to help you with your shirts!! Thanks a ton of the compliment and for watching - hope you're doing fantastic this week!
Thank you for the tutorial! To buy off the rack, I need to pickup large to fit my shoulders, height, and arm length, and that leads to a baggy fit. I completed my first tailoring early this morning, of a long sleeve flannel shirt and it turned out terrific! I used the zigzag overstitch, finished it with a top stitch to hold the seam allowance flat to the inside, and better match to the original hem style (had a double lapped seam with two visible top stitches).
I bet that shirt looks amazing now! So happy this video was helpful to get you a better fit. Plus, people are gonna be staring at how well your new shirt fits!! Thanks a ton for watching, and for the positive comment. Let me know if there's any other videos you'd like to see :)
Thanks so much! We recently bought a Babylock Zest and I found your channel while trying to learn some basic technique. You inspired me to tailor a shirt I’ve been avoiding because of the fit, it went perfectly. I’m now feeling confident enough to try creating an entire shirt. I really appreciate your attention to detail, keep up the great work!
Thank you for sharing such a terrific comment here. I'm so excited for you to modify and create garments from scratch. It's such a rewarding feeling on so many levels. Feel free to share your work as you keep learning. Thank you so much for watching :D
This is awesome, I had a pile of shirts to tailor and this made it an easy and fun task! One of the other helpful things I found was for a shirt with a striped pattern, using the stripes as a reference while putting in pins and sewing. Thanks so much dude!!
I've watched a few of the shirt tailoring videos, and yours is the only one I've seen so far that recommends undoing the hem seam before taking in the sides. Is it necessary? What is the advantage to doing that way? Thanks for the helpful videos.
Tock Custom i follow you 💯 from 🇨🇦 #YSW iam a newbie at Sewing i understand about the sewing machine but I know I need to learn much more on sewing please keep making your sewing videos so people like me newbie could learn thank you kindly 🙏 bye 👋 from #YSW Domenico
My next project will be to (attempt to) shorten a regular dress shirt to make it an "untucked" shirt, or one that is meant to be worn untucked. I don't imagine that this will be too difficult, but your videos have helped me tremendously!
That's a great idea. All you have to do is just trim along the bottom, and then hem it all the way around. You might get some bulk where the plackets are, but there are some tricks to keep things looking smooth there. I may have to shoot a video on that at some point. Let me know how it goes!
Really well done video. Glad it was too the point, not too fast to see what was happening, and not a bunch of boring chatter before a person gets to the useable part! Good job! Deserves FAR more Likes! (From a new Subscriber)
I love when people notice all the subtle little things I try to focus on to make these videos a bit more refined. Thanks a ton for the positive comment
Omg yes. There are so many baggy, balloon dress shirts that are just terrible. But when I find a nice, fitted dress shirt through the torso, the neck is too small! This should help bigtime.
awesome video. im pretty tall but rather skinny, so finding stuff like flannels that fit me properly is a bit of a pain (have to go with L or XL tall sizes to get the shoulder width and the height, but then it looks like im wearing a trash bag). gonna get to sizing them up nice this weekend
Another excellent tutorial from Tock Custom. You explain the how-to very well. I've lost weight and have quite a few tops and blouses to take in, and I will use this tutorial as a guide. Thanks very much.
Awesome video - my alterations seldom look as nice as yours. My serger was the best investment I made next to my utility sewing machine. Many of your viewers may have an overcast foot included with their machine that has a bar on the right side. The right side of the stitch goes just off the edge of the fabric and the metal bar. The bar keeps the tension of the thread from pulling the edge of the fabric down and in, keeping the seam allowance flat. The bar is attached on the front but is free on the back allowing the stitches to slide off as you stitch forward.
Thank you so much for the comment, I use my serger like crazy, but a lot of people don't have one yet, so I thought this would be nice for those folks. Good call about the overcast foot, there are always so many useful accessories!
This is certainly something a beginner could do, its just like the T-Shirt one, but un-stitching the hems, not too bad :) Just take your time, there is never a rush with sewing projects
you are a great discovery for me! I love watching your videos, simple, easy and understandable. Thank you! P.S. Oh.. and I love your 'All right, just like thAt, nice & smooth, nice & clean' 😊. Keep teaching us please
Thank you so much for the positive comment! Happy to make simple videos that are so helpful to people. Do I say all those things that often lol, I don't really realize - I guess it's just the way I talk :P Hope you have an excellent week!
Tock: A very timely vid! I've been struggling to fix a friend's shirt and this vid answered all of the issues that I was having and saved tons of time too! Thank you much, keep it going!
I'm so happy to hear this was so helpful at just the right time! I'd love to see how your work turned out if you're willing to share on social media :) Thanks for the comment!
Love the way your projects look, could you do a brief video on adjusting the pattern to get a better fit instead of going back and tailoring? Have watched all of your beginning to sew videos, even though I started sewing 50 plus years ago. I still have trouble getting a proper fit. Thanks
Once you get used to the basic construction, all you have to do is just bring the seam allowance on the side seams up through the sleeves in to your desired fit. and that's it! Then you wont have to unhem the bottom and restitch. I do it on every shirt I make, perfect fit every time. Essentially, every shirt I make is a custom, handmade, fitted shirt... and they always turn out the way I want them to :)
Found your channel yesterday. Watched 6 vids so far. Buying a machine, hopefully, right now. Got a special project but, after that, I realized I can make/tailor my own clothes. Thanks for that! I just have a quick q- Why, when doing the zigzag stitch to prevent fraying, why do you have to ensure that one stitch is off the edge of the fabric? I understand that it's emulating a serger but wouldn't both stitches in the fabric(right and left zigzag) do an even better job of preventing the same fraying? I know that it stands to reason that you're right and my thinking is wrong and naive due to lack of experience but I'd love to understand the theory/mechanics as to why having that stitch land off the fabric does more to secure the weave than if both were inside the seam allowance. Forgive any miswordings as I'm just a 44yo guy who's just started learning sewing. Thanks in advance!
I just found your channel and love your tailoring a shirt video. So calm and clear and concise. I think I can do mine now. Thank you! PS your costumes are fabulous.
Love this video! Just got a brother seweing machine and love this new hobby. Silly question... Many of my button shirts have a curved hem. Since Im short and have hence a short torso, i need take a couple inches off my shirts. When a shirt has a curved hem, is there a special ruler you use for that? I know for a straight hem shirt, you can easily draw a straight line across with a normal ruler to know where to cut, but seems not so simple with a curved hem shirt. Thanks. You're the best.
So pumped to start tailoring my clothes! My sewing machine will be at my door Thursday. Beefy enough to sew patches on a battle vest as well🤘🏻 wish me luck!!! Subscribed!!!
Thanks a ton! I'm planning on doing a full tutorial on making a pair of jeans soon, but that's going to be a BIG video - lots to cover. Tailoring pants can sometimes be more challenging than making them from scratch believe it or not... so I'll have to do some more research before I get to that part :) Great question!
This is great as the shirt I recently made with help from your tutorials needs tailoring as the back hem seems to billow out at the back. Putting a couple of darts in was suggested.
You could totally do darts, but if there is too much fabric under the arms, it would look kind of weird. Its always better for men to bring the side seams in. Darts usually work better for women's bodies, but they certainly work for everyone in a lot of situations
@@TockCustom The awful pattern I used said to sew the sleeves in after the side seems so i'd have to make sure it would work ok taking the seems in all the way up the sleeve. The pattern I used cost £4. I priced the one you worked from and it was £20 ($25) I guess you get what you pay for but your tutorial was informative and inspirational in me learning to sew.
I'm new to sewing and your explanation on how to read patterns and the sewing process made me wanna try this shirt. Could you make a video explaining how to make the long sleeve and cuffs? I think this pattern (although is a men's shirt) is something my sister would love to use. Thanks! I found your channel by accident and now I'm watching everything hahha =D
I can totally do that! I actually have a pattern for a women's shirt that uses pretty much all the same techniques. In the mean time... the collar part of this video is the SAME way you do cuffs on a sleeve. But I'll have to revisit that when I have time :) Thanks for watching, have a great weekend!
@@TockCustom A nice woman's shirt would also be great. I mentioned my sister because she have this grunge style so loves these red and black plaid shirts to throw on, you know? and we always find those on men's sections at the stores. I don't know what happens in women's sections, but you cannot find good flannel shirts there. So, when I saw the cover of this pattern you're using, I felt like the long sleeved version could work great. But, as I said, a woman's shirt pattern probably would be better 😂. Thanks again. I'm waiting to watch the cosplay contest you'll be hosting.
Thank you for sharing your videos! You do excellent tutorials, I have tried to watch others, yet I keep coming back to your videos. My question is, would you do a tutorial about making long sleeves for a dress shirt? I found a man's western shirt pattern that my mom and grandma had started back around 1974, the pieces were laid out but not cut. The pattern is the Simplicity 6693, I have cut it out, sewn the yokes, front and background panels of the shirt and attached the both the button and buttonhole bands. I applied the interface to the wrong side of one of the bands. I think it will still work. I'm getting ready to attach both sleeves, however, the wording of the directions are a bit confusing. I found your channel because about 6 months ago, my husband asked if I could make him some iron on patches. That's when I found your channel and been stuck ever since. Thank you so much!!
I've certainly been meaning to do a video on dress sleeves for a shirt like this, but got buried in other projects. Hopefully I can get to it soon. Thats so cool that you have a chance to finish a project started in 1974!! I'd love to see how that turns out when you're done!
Excellent! Thanks for watching, hope you end up making some fantastic things as you start learning some new techniques :) Let me know if you have any questions!
Hi, I've lost a lot of weight and I need to make my 2XLT Shirts into XLT Shirts. This video is great for the body and the arms but I need to move the shoulders in a little as they are now dropping too low. How do I do this? Do you have a video for this? If not might be a good tutorial to add to these amazing videos.
I'm poring over your videos, but I was wondering if you had a link you could post to altering the shoulders of a dress shirt. I'm trying to get into sewing, too, and an finding it confounding and pretty frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer in helping me improve.
If they're short sleeves, you'd just trim the length and re-hem the edges. If they have cuffs it would be much more elaborate, where you'd have to remove the cuff, shorten the length, and then reattach the cuffs. One method is easy and the other is a bit of extra work
Well I'm tall and thin, so a medium shirt is too short for my length, so I start with a large and then tailor it in to be more slim fitting. Hope that makes sense
Tock just to clarify on the seam allowage if you would. I have a McCalls Patten 2149 and it has a dotted line around the inside of the outer line which is 1.5cm away from the outer line. I assume the solid line is the cutting line and the dotted line is the sewing line. Before I start tracing etc for my first shirt I just want to make sure I have that right please. Cheers Edward
Typically, the dotted line on the inside would be for a different size shirt. The seam allowance is always built into the shape of the pattern. So if you're making an XL shirt for example, that would be the solid line on the outside, and then its a dotted or dashed line for the L size shirt, and then something different for a medium size, etc. Hope that makes sense. I know the pattern instructions are super long, but you might find the info there as well :)
Videos always show how to tailor for slim figures. I need a tutorial on how to make a shirt tailored for someone who has 20 extra pounds. There does not seem to be a video on this on RUclips. Any possibility you could do one? I subscribed to your channel.
Do you have any videos for how to enlarge a man's shirt pattern for an extra large front chest? I can do shoulder and tummy adjustments in my sleep but I'm only guessing on the chest. Arm holes need to get deeper as well (he's a professional singer and it is a BIG chest). But I think I can work out the armholes. Tips? Suggestions? Reference?
Yes! Just put the shirt on, make marks with chalk where you need it tailored in, and do the sewing there. If your hips and arms are comfy, just leave those as they are. Hope that makes sense, just call me if you need to lol Love ya buddy!
I thought you were going to talk about changing the pattern. I'm making a shirt for my son, who's a very slim but tall fellow. So he needs a Large in length but Medium in girth. Just wondering how to make some changes before I make the shirt. Thanks.
No it does not! I may look longer though because it will become a little thinner. If you need your sleeves shorter, you just need to undo the hem, trim it, and re-hem it :)
I guess the only problem is that if it is more than maybe 1 whole size too big you will look silly if there are pockets? Great demo tho, definitely will try this thanks
Isn't it bad for the needle to go off the edge of the fabric, or to sew when there's no fabric under it at all? I've heard other people say you shouldn't do that because it makes the needle bend or break and you could damage the bobbin holder. And that has happened to me before, but I know you can use the zigzag stick to overlock. I guess you just have to be really careful and not go to fast?
Every time you do a stitch off the fabric, it makes a knot where the top thread meets the bobbin thread. Most reliable machines can handle a stitch or two off the fabric, but once in a while it'll get knotted up. I've been able to practice enough to keep this from happening most of the time, but mistakes always happen once in a while. The needle shouldn't bend, break, or hit anything at all though... if that happens your needle may have been previously bent, and you might want to put a fresh needle in anyway. Always take things slow at first as you're new to get a good grasp of each technique, as you become more comfortable, you'll find yourself sewing at full speed all the time :) Hope this was helpful, thank you so much for watching!
Hello, Do you do request? I have Green Bee pattern, called the Frances shirt dress for children that is probably similiar to this, But I am having a hard time understanding the pattern. Is there anyway you could do a tutorial on this pattern? Thanks!
I have quite a long list of videos I'm planning to shoot and edit, so I'm not sure if I can take specific pattern tutorial requests at the moment. I do have another video on how to read patterns that might help you out though 😀
Thanks for the video, but, what is my chest is smaller than my stomach? My chest is 40 and stomach is 42 inches. How would you tailor this long sleeve shirt to fit better?
I suppose I'd tailor it so the shirt was straight from your largest measurement. You wouldn't want it to be fitted up top around your chest, and the get bigger around your stomach, so maybe just tailor it to 44 inches around
You: "Using the touch display..." Me with my 1961 beige machine with olive-coloured dials: "Come on, Bernina; we can do this!" (And of course she CAN actually do the same as most modern home-sewers' machines; it's just all a bit more manual. If she was good enough for my mother she's good enough for me!)
Thanks Tock. The tool I am referring to is like a screw driver but it has a hole in the shaft near the tip, and it seems to have a tiny hole at the tip. The handle is also pinkish and it came with my Brother sewing machine, in the tool packet. I am going to see if you have a vid about machine tools, fingers crossed 🤞
Tock Custom should pull his hair back when he does the reveal so we can see the whole collar on the shirt. It's such an important part of a shirt especially one that was homemade. Just a suggestion as I felt there was something critical missing after an otherwise great sewing shirt tutorial. How the collar looks and how it lays around the neck.
I just lost over 120 pounds, still aiming for 40 more haha Your video will allow me to keep all my shirts and not throw away money thank you so much bro!

Awesome video. Time to do some tailoring.
So pumped to start tailoring my clothes! My sewing machine will be at my door Thursday. Beefy enough to sew patches on a battle vest as well🤘🏻 wish me luck!!! Subscribed!!!
Thanks so much for sharing. Love watching you work.
You're very welcome! Gonna have lots of new stuff coming out soon. I appreciate your support!
This is a great video. Thanks for sharing. Do you have a video showing how to tailor a pair of pants or jeans?
Thanks a ton! I'm planning on doing a full tutorial on making a pair of jeans soon, but that's going to be a BIG video - lots to cover.
Tailoring pants can sometimes be more challenging than making them from scratch believe it or not... so I'll have to do some more research before I get to that part :)
Great question!
Thanks. My shirt came out pretty good!
OOOOOOOOOHHH!!! I would love to see it! Please tag me on IG or twitter or something :)
nice quick and to the point
As quick as it could be lol - still a long video, but I tried to get it all in there. Thanks for watching!!
Super helpful! I’ve never tailored anything before so this was explained very well!!
Hi love the videos you are very good is there maybe easy way for dyslexia people who wante do fashion
Straight forward and direct instructions thank you 🌸
I'm new to sewing and your explanation on how to read patterns and the sewing process made me wanna try this shirt.
But I'll have to revisit that when I have time :)
Thanks for watching, have a great weekend!
As always very well explained in a simple manner, thank you much appreciated!
You're very welcome! I always appreciate all the positive feedback you give :)
Hope you're doing excellent and have a wonderful weekend!
Wow, you are super Duper quick. Love the tutorial.. 😁
Awesome Video Tock. Thanks for teaching us.
Of course! You know how much I love doing stuff like this! Thank you for watching, I always appreciate your feedback :)
Great video! Can you recommend a good sewing machine for someone on a tight budget? Thanks!
Thank you so much, new to sewing and you explain it all so clearly!
Excellent! Very happy this was so helpful
@@TockCustom I sent you an email a couple weeks ago. Lol, I found a second shirt, I haven't started it yet.
Just found you on youtube and your videos are great! Binge watching now and saving for reference later! ;)
Excellent! Thanks for watching, hope you end up making some fantastic things as you start learning some new techniques :) Let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you for the tutorial...very well explained, would you please make a tutorial on how to alter the shoulders of a shirt and T shirt
You're very welcome, I will do some research on tailoring shoulders for sure. Thx for the recommendation. Hope you're having a terrific week!
@@TockCustom tkank you for considering my request ...appreciate that
That would be great!
Do you have a video on flat felled long sleeve tailoring?
I'm poring over your videos, but I was wondering if you had a link you could post to altering the shoulders of a dress shirt. I'm trying to get into sewing, too, and an finding it confounding and pretty frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer in helping me improve.
You're making me want start sewing again. Do you have a studio or is that a converted basement or garage? I always need more space.
You should totally get back into sewing! This is actually the "Living Room" of my house lol - my workshop is the most important room of course :)
Amazing! Thank you for making this video!!!!!!!!
Great video and great channel. Keep it coming!
Thanks a ton Jim, really appreciate the positive feedback!
Very great tutorial 🙌🏼
Omg i just found you channel. You are awsome thank you so much im a new fan kelly USA,OHIO
Very happy you found me! I appreciate the sub, nice to meet you Kelly!
Good morning. How do you resize a shirt where the sleeves are too long? I couldn't find a video covering that detail. Thanks.
If they're short sleeves, you'd just trim the length and re-hem the edges. If they have cuffs it would be much more elaborate, where you'd have to remove the cuff, shorten the length, and then reattach the cuffs. One method is easy and the other is a bit of extra work
Would it have worked better for you to have made the medium sized pattern to start with or would that changed the sizes of the rest of the shirt?
Well I'm tall and thin, so a medium shirt is too short for my length, so I start with a large and then tailor it in to be more slim fitting. Hope that makes sense
Why do we open the roll ham on the sleave and the bottom of the shirt, but not on the T-shirt, when we want to fit it slimmer?
Many thanks Tock. That makes sense so next week I start. Edward
thank you, this is fantastic!
That was very helpful 😊
I love your videos.
Awesome video!
Videos always show how to tailor for slim figures. I need a tutorial on how to make a shirt tailored for someone who has 20 extra pounds. There does not seem to be a video on this on RUclips. Any possibility you could do one? I subscribed to your channel.
Really helpful thanks
Do you have any videos for how to enlarge a man's shirt pattern for an extra large front chest? I can do shoulder and tummy adjustments in my sleep but I'm only guessing on the chest. Arm holes need to get deeper as well (he's a professional singer and it is a BIG chest). But I think I can work out the armholes. Tips? Suggestions? Reference?
Does this work the same for thinning out the waist of a shirt? I often buy larger shirts to fit my shoulders/chest, but then the waist is baggy.
Yes! Just put the shirt on, make marks with chalk where you need it tailored in, and do the sewing there. If your hips and arms are comfy, just leave those as they are.
Hope that makes sense, just call me if you need to lol
Love ya buddy!
I thought you were going to talk about changing the pattern. I'm making a shirt for my son, who's a very slim but tall fellow. So he needs a Large in length but Medium in girth. Just wondering how to make some changes before I make the shirt. Thanks.
Question: when you tailor the shirt does it affect the sleeve length
No it does not! I may look longer though because it will become a little thinner. If you need your sleeves shorter, you just need to undo the hem, trim it, and re-hem it :)
Thanks. Am trying to learn to “tailor” my own clothes I just didn’t want to alter shirts if the sleeves would be shortened.
And thank you. 😊
Do you take in both sides of the shirt?
Love you videos
Really appreciate your support! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to learn!
I guess the only problem is that if it is more than maybe 1 whole size too big you will look silly if there are pockets? Great demo tho, definitely will try this thanks
Thank You
Isn't it bad for the needle to go off the edge of the fabric, or to sew when there's no fabric under it at all?
Always take things slow at first as you're new to get a good grasp of each technique, as you become more comfortable, you'll find yourself sewing at full speed all the time :)
Hope this was helpful, thank you so much for watching!
THANK YOU
Hello, Do you do request? I have Green Bee pattern, called the Frances shirt dress for children that is probably similiar to this, But I am having a hard time understanding the pattern. Is there anyway you could do a tutorial on this pattern? Thanks!
I have quite a long list of videos I'm planning to shoot and edit, so I'm not sure if I can take specific pattern tutorial requests at the moment. I do have another video on how to read patterns that might help you out though 😀
THANK YOU I LOVE YOU
Thanks for the video, but, what is my chest is smaller than my stomach? My chest is 40 and stomach is 42 inches. How would you tailor this long sleeve shirt to fit better?
I suppose I'd tailor it so the shirt was straight from your largest measurement. You wouldn't want it to be fitted up top around your chest, and the get bigger around your stomach, so maybe just tailor it to 44 inches around
You: "Using the touch display..."
Me with my 1961 beige machine with olive-coloured dials: "Come on, Bernina; we can do this!" (And of course she CAN actually do the same as most modern home-sewers' machines; it's just all a bit more manual. If she was good enough for my mother she's good enough for me!)
Awesome!!
Thanks for watching! Hope this was helpful!
What is the pink handled tool you used to point? I have one and don't know what it is
I'm pretty sure it was just a seam ripper, I cover all my tools in my 'Sewing Tools' video if you need more specifics :)
Some of this I learned by accident, aka trial and error. Thanks for not making me learn the rest by ruining shirts 👍🤜😁
lol, glad this was helpful! Excited for you to make some nice fitted shirts!
Show us how you made that Spiderman plushie in the background.
That's a really good point lol, I'll keep this in mind from now on :)
