English vocalist Sam Lee has an amazing backstory: He found his way to singing professionally after stints as a naturalist and a burlesque dancer. But what really matters are his mesmerizing performances, as well as his incredible ability to connect with people - certainly with the audience in front of him, but also with the elders he's sought out to learn these songs.
Lee has dedicated himself to preserving centuries-old folk songs of the U.K. and Ireland, particularly from "outsider" communities like the Roma (Gypsies) and the Scottish and Irish Travelers. But he and his bandmates - ukulele player and vocalist Jon Whitten, violinist and vocalist Flora Curzon, and percussionist and vocalist Josh Green - put these ancient songs in thoroughly 21st-century arrangements that feel creative, fresh and surprising, but also deeply human.
Above it all, Lee's voice blazes through with strength, clarity and confidence. This is an artist who has found his destiny as a singer, a folk-song collector and a steward of stories, keeping them alive and relevant for a new generation.

isn't it strange that there is always somebody who loves these old traditional songs, preserving and performing them. Perfect!
At first, I didn't know what I was hearing... then I turned down the lights, sat myself down and closed my eyes. Glorious. Thank you for introducing this new type of music to me. Absolutely stunning.
Same here.
Brilliant. He's a beautiful singer, and i love the creative arrangements of folk songs that he does and that he's collected the songs himself. And the throat singing (?) at the end!
Mike H - he did the same when I saw him at Shoreham's Ropetackle a few years ago - the entire show was brilliant from beginning to end - and the fact that he had come straight from the forest where he'd been singing with the nightingales at a secret camp somewhere just made it all the better!!
The polyphonic singing isn't that hard to do actually: it takes practise to get the overtones (high notes) to really come out loudly but once you have the technique it can be practised in the shower etc. Good fun!! It's to do with the shape of the inside of the mouth: there are tutorials here on youtube!!
An amazing performance! Thank you Sam lee and all musicians who keep this music alive.
The overtone/throat singing at the end was a great surprise!
+bobmcgarity Yeah he's got great control of the overtones!
+bobmcgarity It was such an amazing surprise. Put a grin on my face in the middle of some super frustrating programming homework, which is hard to do!
posting the song guide cause I keep replaying this!

I think this is one of my favorite things I've listened to in a little while.
Same here.
Fabulous. I have been listening to Sam Lee's Radio 4 series (in the UK) about song collecting and that brought me here.
I was there and he was amazinggggg so talented!
Hey, its Josh!! I've been longing to hear your song 'God's body is your body is mine'.... So good to see you guys playing at the Tiny Desk Concert! :)
A wonderful expression of folk music. I agree that Sam Lee was the man sent to be the gathering preservationist force in preserving this wonderful music. A way of telling stories and passing them on to future generations.
Just found npr music. Great stuff!!
A few artists in recent years where I genuinely can't wait for their new records...PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Goldfrapp, Laura Marling, Sam Lee.
I like your taste in music.
Still listening in late 2022, amazing
that second song… phew. I couldn't help my tears. Lovely.
I'm not sure why people would dislike this. They did a beautiful job of preserving an old style of music that has influenced much of the music we listen to now.
+HudAndSons Probably because he dared to make a mild political statement.
Alan Esh Yea sounds about right lol
Lovely Molly is fantastic. Thanks NPR
the plough boy song "Molly" is just too beautiful. :)
This was wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you for this video NPR.
Absolutely wonderful

Lovely Molly is absolutely amazing.
Holy Moley. The graph of most viewed parts when you scrub through peaks right at Molly. Lovely.
So interesting - lovely!
Just heard this guy and the band on the radio today. Absolutely fantastic.
Absolutely amazing !
Amazing performance and music, completely astonishing, like usual with Tiny Desk.
I must say tho, that it seems like the video is a bit delayed from the sound.
love the overtone singing at the end - I can do this but my overtones aren't as loud - but then he does have a mic!!
Absolutely sparkling and dynamic.
Excellent! What a voice!
what a song what a voice so rich
Great music! Pretty fancy fiddling and vocals.
I’ve come back to listen :)
Stunning!
never seen someone play the briefcase like that !
It's a Shruti Box
so utterly wonderful.
+dogbags the last, particularly, was gutterly wonderful
My darling such a beautiful song .
awesome!
The most beautiful performance.
Amazing!...I want to know one thing and one thing only.........Where can I get that sweet-sweet shirt?!!!
tibetan throat singin...woot!
Lovely!
What brand and tuning is that Shruti that Sam plays?
Fantastic.
Truly haunting and beautiful.
WOW!
does anyone know what instrument Mr lee is playing?
The ever-talented Sam Lee; he has a "fiddle" in his voice!
Wow. just wow
Anyone know where the shirt is from?
I need that shirt!
The frequency has to be one of Love because I’m crying and I don’t know why…..
Anyone kwnos whats that instrument called Sam is playing?
What instrument is he, Sam in blue, playing that folds almost looks like an accordion?
What is the instrument that Sam is playing?
reminds me of Jethro Tull
Anyone know what that single note drone instrument he played at the end was called. I need one, desperately.
+James Oden shruti box
I can now predict what my next instrument may be.
Yes Sam!
Wow
Hermoso.
The songs are beautiful without a doubt, but how about that shirt? Mon Dieu.
If English people speak about Gypsies, I don't think they are talking specifically about Roma and Sinti. The Gypsy Sam Lee is talking about has an English name and the song is English too. I think he is pointing travelling English people with their own culture and communities
In the Uk it is correct to call Roma and Sinti as gypsies, other travellers are not.
Great ! Is he Jenson Button's bro ?
51tomtomtom I wondered the same thing! He looks like Jenson and has the same accent.
nice shirt Sam
Fucking amazing!
He reminds me of Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear.
That's a fine shirt, Mr Lee.
Those overtones were filthy.
Something Nick Drake in that voice of his.
There is definitely a lot of talent here, and I really admire them for trying to make these things live on, but it's just not my cup of tea.
What the heck did I just listen to? It sounded like middle-eastern/celtic folk songs.
+LukeTheDuke93 Middle eastern? What? Why the hell would you associate this to the middle east? >.
+LukeTheDuke93 Reading the description is often helpful
idk. Just thinking out loud.
Please have Carly Rae Jepsen! I heard her piece on NPR last week, and her new album is phenomenal.
I hear like a mixture between Cat Stevens and Nick Drake. With a blend of old tales.
wow. what control he has over the overall sound! I think thats uncommon for a folk project. he sounds like a more genuine version of Johnny Flynn
This was better than expected, given the off-pitch singing at the beginning
pretentious middle class twoddle, but the last one was nice.
+nevskipazza he comes across very pretentious when watching it, but I'm glad he is, because we get some incredibly beautiful almost lost in time music from it.
+nevskipazza , I don't know how much you have heard of him, he was recently interviewed on bbc radio, after a very succesfull gig, and he went into who his sources were, in quite great depth, it was fascinating, it used to be the usual way of collecting songs in the folk tradition. If the people he was collecting from had thought he was not genuine, there is no way he would have been welcomed amongst them. Another point, Lee is a gypsy surname, so I would not be surprised if there was some connection here. By the way, gypsy is a bit of a catch all word, the roma called themselves little egyptians, possibly to give them a biblical provenance, and can also mean traveller, and then there is the issue of where the roma, hail from originally, which, it seems, may be india, and we are talking wayback, every country in europe has gypsies. I obviously do not know your knowledge of folk traditions, enlighten us. And by the way, try getting a ticket to his gigs! I must point out, the people he is learning the songs from had to develop a certain style of delivery, a personal angle, to gain attention, and was signature, so it could not be pinched and his style exactly captures it, moreover, it is very difficult to phrase this singing, and I certainly appreciate that in him as well.
He is my neighbour and is one of the nicest guys you could meet. Also he is the son of jewish immigrants. He really loves this musi and it is all completely from the heart.
Folk music comes from the poorest level of society, sadly it is only educated people that are preserving it.
Pretentious???? How can genuine traditional folk songs be pretentious?
It's like the Bee Gees with no sex appeal or groove.....
🤮
