Lyrics:
The moon shines bright
And the stars give a light
In a little while it will be day
The voice of love it calls upon us all
And bids us awake and pray
Rise, arise wake thee arise
Life she is calling thee
For it might be the mothering of your sweet soul
If you open your eyes and see
That the life of a man it comes with little plan
It flourishes like a flower
As tender in the heart into which you’re born
So cherish your every hour
For the summertime has come
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go,
And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain Thyme
All around the blooming heather
For our time is not long
Time’s an old folk song
No longer can we stay
Those that remember say
Blessed are you all
Who make it through this brawl
Long life and another good year
Blessed are you all
Who answer to the call
Long life and another good year
Long life and another good year
The moon shines bright
And the stars will be our height
Life she is calling thee
Rise, arise wake thee arise
And ever more watchful be
This adaptation of the ancient traditional folk song The Moon Shines Bright came as a ‘gift’ from Sam's good friend, the 93-year-old English Gypsy, Freda Black, who offered him a song to take on pilgrimage. It is also influenced by a Zuni prayer for greeting the sunrise and encouraging us to experience wonder in the here and now. This meaningful and pertinent track weaves together ‘messages of devotion from different lands to communicate the impermanence of life and the importance of recognising the sacred’.
Elizabeth Fraser’s (Cocteau Twins) vocals inject a haunting reminder into The Moon Shines Bright of the beauty and fragility of life, using a fragment of lyrics from a traditional Scottish folk song ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’.
Sam says ‘To me, the song is about the importance of being connected. In a time when religion and faith are in question in our western lives, its simplicity of form brings us back to the bare bones of essential life experience and is a call for us to pay attention to the bigger things in this world; “for our time is not long, time’s an old folksong”.
The Moon Shines Bright track is ‘a gentle yet potent wake up call to recognise the beauty of life in its purest form’.

It is wonderful to see and hear Elizabeth sing again. She will always in my opinion have one of the finest vocal talents humanity has ever produced, and I would not be the person I am today, if not for her music.
This song is lovely, as well. I actually wish I could be the drummer and/or bassist in an ensemble like this.
Whats your top 3 favorite songs?
@@DA-wr9uy I agree with all about her unique voice. My favorite singer for a long time now (1983).
Waow, top 3, it's not possible !
There is so much, thanks Cocteau Twins of course and their unique music : Lazy Calm, I Wear your Ring, Half-Gifts
but also others : Another day, Song to the Siren, This love
@@charliecemoi4742 Those are great picks! Mine are Fifty-Fifty Clown, Treasure Hiding, and either Primitive Heart or My Truth (they're tied for third) but Wolf in the Breast, I Wear Your Ring and Hitherto sounds sung better live to me. She doesn't have a song I strongly dislike or couldn't listen to.
if this doesn't give you goosebumps listening to it then you are not alive.
I can't believe how clear and beautiful her voice still is. Pure gold
Laura Palumbo farther to fall
Yet she feels ashamed to show it :/
@@chip48 Performance anxiety does not have to make sense. It just is.
She's only 57 years old, she's not old..
This beautiful song was played at my Mum's funeral yesterday - she died 2 days after Christmas. The message of love and life going by so quickly has comforted me through a very difficult time. She had a long life and another good year before she left us. Knowing that helps enormously.
So much love and long life to you xxx Thank you for playing this song xx
I'm sorry for your loss. My Mom died January 9th. I called for an ambulance on Christmas Eve, and she came home on NYE on hospice. I find this song very timely. And love Liz to bits.
@@tropenator God bless you , kith n kin .
Reading that reminded me that exactly one year after my mother died, driving across the Everglades to my sister's, my cd player in the car broke. I turned on the radio, and they were playing Ravel's "Mother Goose Suite", which we had chosen for her funeral. Exactly one year to the day of her funeral. What are the chances, right?
WOW!
Damn, she can still sing. The world is a good place again.
you did one of the most amazing things in the world of music. you got Liz to sing again and you made her smile in the process. and you showed it to the whole universe of her fans. Sir, I salute you.
Elizabeth had just finish a world tour with Massive Attack before singing with Sam here, it's hardly getting her to 'sing again.' check out youtube (Massive Attack live 2019) she sings the three songs she co-wrote with them, and 'Where have all the flowers gone.'
@@keithwillb5691 I do believe the concept was that she is singing on something new and making a new collaboration, which could bode well for the future for her as far as collaborating with others.
As well as singing the three songs she co-wrote with Massive Attack, Elizabeth also sang ‘Where have all the flowers gone?’ On their 2019 world tour. She’d worked with ‘The Insects’ (for a BBC series) before the extensive MA tour and written (and sang on) new songs (with her longtime partner) for a Sky tv series. She’d also sang a clutch of folk songs to a selective live audience in London. The point is - she hasn’t exactly been hiding in a darkened room since she left the Cocteau Twins. Never the less, I think we can all agree ….you can never get too much of Elizabeth Fraser.
She's actually been collaborating a lot with various artists lately. I still hope we'll get to hear a solo album from her at some point in the future though. She's brilliant.
@@keithwillb5691 well I love what she did on Mezzanine. but those crappy youtube bootlegs you're talking about don't do her voice any bit of justice. I mean SING. as in something new, strong and energizing as "The Moon Shines Bright"
Elizabeth is perfection. I especially love it when she gets a smile on her face while singing. She's feeling it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE
From Lebanon, Romania and Canada to you dear Liz and to Sam, two beautiful voices and souls!!!
I used to listen to Cocteau Twin in MIDST OF THE WAR in LEBANON !!!! IMAGINE the sounds of bombs in the background??? SUREAL!!!
The instant I heard Elizabeth Fraser in the early 80's, I fell in love. Her voice never ceases to make my heart soar, ache, burst and break as much as any love ever has. And though unrequited by nature, I take frequent, guiltless pleasure in overdosing on her opiates for the soul.
Her voice was and still is....incomparable...unique....soul touchingly brilliant.
Why did she stop singing?
@@cherilynlarsen8104 The short answer...Robin Guthrie and to focus on her daughter.
@@cherilynlarsen8104 part of it is that she has performance anxiety. Which does not have to make sense to us to exist.
@@eboethrasher Thanks for the info. I understand how difficult performance anxiety can be. They created a beautiful piece music. I hope they are able to do more.
Oh my god, this is actually breathtaking...Liz is the greatest female vocalist of out times for me...
human*** vocalist
@tylerwatson8067 are there vole, insect or goat voices that you prefer?
Sam Lee is a gloriously wonderful singer and archivist/interpreter of old folk songs.
How magical that he's here.
Of course the divine Elizabeth Fraser takes it elsewhere ... magic.
Our time is not long.
Blessed are you all - who answer to the call ...
Liz's voice is still magic. Like fireflies dancing in the air on a clear solstice night.
Perfect description of Liz Fraser's voice
Irresistible! Can we please, please have more Elizabeth Fraser music in the world?
Magic, Magic puré🧚🧚🧚
If emotions had sound, surely "joy" would sound like Elizabeth Fraser. It's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard.
Dear Sam congratulations on persuading Elizabeth Fraser to sing on your new album (i know she's a fan). Your voices work so well together. Your next job (should you wish to accept it) is to persuade Elizabeth to record her own folk album and (hopefully) return the compliment.
She is amazing. I would love she sings more often
So beautiful. I love both of their voices. It’s so nice to hear Elizabeth sing again. I’ve been a fan since Cocteau Twins.
I love this song, like an old man telling old folk story besides fire.
OMG. How in the world does she still sound absolutely perfect 40 years later?!?!?
Playing and singing music is something one can do all one's life, if you care for and keep your instrument in good condition. She sounds as hauntingly pure and beautiful as she did in Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil. Think of all the rock, soul and blues singers and musicians who have been around for 40-50 years.
I'm a singer, too, and at age 60, am still performing at venues both intimate and grand (though not on an international level). My voice hasn't changed much over the years, nor has my passion for self-expression through music.
wow i can actually understand the words E. Fraser is singing here. all joking aside i can't believe how beautiful her voice is. i always thought it was lovely in Cocteau Twins songs, but here i feel like i get the full effect of how beautifully clear and smooth her voice is. out of this world
Her songs are 0% difficult to understand
Elizabeth Fraser, my favourite singer ever. Simply beautiful.
Imagine a whole album of these two vocalists, what pleasure!
just discovered Sam Lee through this video. I have a feeling he's the mastermind behind the entire project, so marvellously uplifting... Thank you!
His voice is gorgeous as well. My favorite comment here is by"Just Some Guy" - (comments are not working on most channels, so I thought I would try thanking Sam Lee for sharing this incredible video and also thanking "Just Some Guy" for a perfect comment) Of all the voices in this world I have listened to, no one moves me the way Elizabeth does. Please stay well - Sing for us Liz. Your inner beauty and voice speaks to so many of us. You changed my life for the better - Thank you, always.
Heard this on The Folk Show on 4.12.19 played by Mark Radcliffe....wonderful.....buying the album.....Elizabeth Fraser is as brilliant as ever and its a terrific song all round....
One of the greatest voices of our times, among the finest of any time, in Liz Fraser. This is my intro to Bernard Butler, but he sings beautifully as well
This has got to be one of favourite songs. Stop the clock and take a few moments in time to be swept away somewhere magical. The deepness and quality of Sam's voice in contrast to Elizabeth's ethereal voice with the strings..mmmmm heaven
Liz Fraser's voice is LOVE..pure emotion
Their smiles at the end show they know how beautiful that was. Perfect symmetry with those voices. Liz you legend.
Please Come Back to us, Elizabeth. We need you and we have so sorely missed you.
Ms. Fraser is a treasure. This was amazing.
This brought me to literal tears. Ever time i hear a song I am not familiar to with her i cry. Just so beautiful to hear new songs with her voice in it!
Elizabeth Fraser is a musical treasure.
Great to hear from Liz, voice as pure as ever. Need that acoustic world tour.💜💙💜💖
Yep. Goosebumps. He's got a good voice too.
True!
Yes she gave me goosebumps too! So good to hear her again. He does have a great voice. It's a beautiful song.
Who ever he is...he's a very lucky gentleman to be singing along w such a beautiful instrument (Elizabeth Fraser)
liz fraser the best , unique. We need more more and more of her voice. All over us
This is glorious.
Well I think we should give credit to Sam Lee who has a brilliant crystal clear voice.
"Arise, arise, arise...and the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather..."
Just wonderful to see her singing again and a great way to discover Sam Lee!
Thanks Liz......
Liz uses numerous singing techniques, but her soprano is what is most beautiful
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voices with the rest of us here
She will always be my favorite vocalist. You both sound good together, your voices compliment each other.
So Lovely.. to hear as everything bursts forth this blessed June.. Thank you x
Quel merveilleux moment.
She just gets better with age. Magical beautiful ethereal
thank you thank you thank you Sam and Elizabeth for this gorgeousness
Makes me dream and close my eyes . Thank you beautiful voices.
Sublime.
I love the way in which you sing, shaping the words so, shaping the SongLines so. Heartfeeling Thanks for bringing songs To Life!
Liz is singing the lyrics from the Scottish/Irish folk song “Will ye go, lassie, go...” or “Wild Mountain Thyme”
Wonderful. Love Liz Frazer's voice always. I wanted to her to hit a note at the end, though, with the male singer. Thank you for sharing this beauty!!!
Her voice always gets me so beautiful one of the best listened to her for years with the cocteau twins thanks Liz.
Ohh boy... This song caught me unguarded. Everything perfect: two absolutely brilliant voices singing such a beautiful and delicate song. Maybe we're listening the world's best voices singing together. Bravo !!
Gorgeous, moving, subtle and deep! Wonderful!
Sam Lee...wow!
That was incredible. What flawless voices.
Liz sounds amazing as ever
Such an incredibly beautiful song and voices that go right to my heart

The Elizabethan era continues.
That is beautiful....it'll probably haunt me for the rest of the day! Can't wait for the end of January now Sam!!
Wow fabulous ❤❤
Elizabeth led me here.
Una voz enigmática por siempre. Cualquier sonido q ella emita es mágico❤️
Elizabeth, why do you deny the world that beautiful, healing voice of yours?
Beautiful Duet !!!
The moon shines bright. It makes its own light.
adorable Elizabeth Fraser
Gorgeous
Stunning
Absolutely beautiful - the music, the singing and the smiles.
I'm happy.
Thank you.
She kills me everytime. Love you Lizzy.
god this is so phenomenal
Bright light liz .
That womans voice is just. It completes me XD
Came here for Liz and left in awe of Sam. Love how he reworded the original to replace it's christian damnation's with a kind of pagan rejoicing in the natural cycles of life. I use the word 'awesome' here in it's rightful meaning.
I felt guided by The Holy Spirit that this song was originally Christian but had been changed with pagan references. My researched confirmed this. We have all fallen short of the glory of God. Mankind freely damns themselves through sin. God loves all but we cannot approach his holiness because of our sin. He sent his Son not to condemn the world but to redeem it.
Honestly I'd be more interested in hearing Liz sing Wild Mountain Thyme.
Really beautiful!
Two most amazing, beautiful voices ✨🙏💞
Beautiful
love it!!!!!!!!!!!
3:20 Elizabeth is still haunting.
Wonderful!
So there I was, but a few months ago, at St George's in Bristol, enjoying a great night with Sam Lee, resorting to a spot of praying, in the hope that maybe - just maybe, Sam would invite the wonderful Elizabeth Fraser on stage to duet on The Moon Shines Bright. Unfortunately for me, I didn't pray hard enough, and though heartbroken that Elizabeth did not grace the stage, the version played by Sam and his band, was amazing.
AD58 that’s a shame, I bet she was there (being an adopted Bristolian these days)
Who or what were you praying to?
I've got a bit of dust in my eyes ...
Beautiful!
she has the most beautiful voice of all.
SO SO BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much for sharing this.
magic is real.
YUM!
Beautiful.
