She chose her corrupt awful son over the loyalty of her best friend, and if she's suffering because of it even just internally, I think she deserves it. No one's perfect in this story, but Alicent is one of the worst for the part she played in causing so many deaths and soon enough a war.
This is an example of writers adding in a non book scene that is really great, and fleshes out the material. It answers the viewers question of why didn't Rhaenyra try to work things out with alicent and correct the misunderstanding, and adds unexpected drama with the queen herself going into enemy territory. I would have preferred if this moment where Alicent realises her error is at Rhaenyra’s death scene - Rhaenyra says something like ‘remember the legend of Aegon the Conquerer, of the Prince that was Promised and the Song of Ice and Fire’ to her son and Alicent realises she fucked up and tries to ask Rhaenyra what she means, but she won’t speak to her. Then she watches Rhaenyra died knowing it was all for nothing.
