There’s some major holes that poke through the theory that Alys could be Melisandre, mainly that it’s pretty heavily implied that Melisandre had never been to Westeros before until she went to serve Stannis. Much of her arc/perspective centers around Westeros being a strange land to her and it wouldn’t be strange if she had been there before or had been there the entire time since the time of The Dance. That and in her pov chapter in the books, she talks about how she had been practicing her craft for longer than she can count and Westeros, due to the attitudes that the maesters, septons, and Andals in general have around magic and R’hllorism, would be probably the worst place to do that effectively and efficiently. Her being a shadowbinder means that she spent most of her time practicing on the other side of the world in Asshai (hence her full name) and as a result, was most likely there or near there during this time period. She really has no business or reason to be in Westeros until she went to serve Stannis so she is not Alys. It doesn’t fit her story arc or what we know of her history.
I truly appreciate how Think Story breaks down this episode because i am completely lost in this story. I just cant, for the life of me, keep up with how all these characteres relate to one another. I thought that by activating the close captioning would help me but im still clueless to what im seeing. Great Job guys
honestly that scene with Baela and Moondancer was the highlight of the episode...that showed what dragon warfare is truly all about. even a smaller dragon like that is a huge problem.
Definitely an improvement on the story. I can see the viewers getting more emotionally invested now. I was even chatting "What did he say", before the question was asked!
The allegiances, the quotes, the references in the book, even the bastard naming convention really helps me understand the show better. Awesome content.
I realized after watching this episode that "the prince that was promised" doesn't refer to a person but refers to the blade and it's holder. The translation could read as prince or princess so it is assumed that the valerian steel blade as fine as this would be held by Targaryen but could really be referring to the blade being used to fulfill the prophecy.
You said it was Blood that was hung and being eaten, it's actually Cheese. Cheese is the rat catcher. This is a minor detail, but the green and gold flags are green because of the Hightowers, but gold is because Aegon's dragon Sunfyre is golden and is the most beautiful dragon ever.
If the show follows the books you'll be sick of the riverlands in no time, get wiped nonstop but have armies for days. Hardest part about the book for me was accepting that armies meant nothing.
I hated that Alicent was told the truth. TBH that misinterpretation was the only thing that made me sympathetic towards the Green's side. Now that Alicent knows the truth, I find it hard to have even a little sympathy towards the Green's.
@@Jdjdjdujakzgsha: yeah I wish it was complex. I also liked the whole idea of a war starting just from a misinterpretation that could have prevented the war entirely. But now it seems like the misinterpretation didn’t really matter. Sometimes things should be left ambiguous
Like her father commanding her to ''get close to the king'' wasn't already annihilating the misunderstanding plot. She already knows but now she is just getting called out instead of trying to convince herself that she wasn't just used by every dude of the court
What’s she gonna do? Get up in front of the kingdom and say “hey sorry guys I misheard my dying husband on his deathbed he actually did want his daughter on the throne.” Many would doubt that it’s the truth, including Aegon who holds all the power, and his small council: who only has power because Aegon does. As soon as the greens seized power, this war was set in stone.
@@dronemachine4694 True, its too late. It wouldnt change anything if she would mention the misunderstanding. I think she would speak about it, if it would change anything. But since it wont, she will probably dont tell anyone. Its the best decision she can make for herself in this phucked up situation. if Vyseris just would have kept his dying mouth closed ...
Viserys told Alicent about his dream of a male baby born to him wearing the conquerors crown, he also questioned his own decision to name Rhaenyra heir. Aegon was his firstborn son so naturally she would interpret his final words the way she did. This whole mess is Viserys fault, Daemon was right calling him weak.
Kinda ironic that Vyseris, who was always team peace, is responsible for this mess. He just should have kept his dying mouth closed! I dont blame Alicent for that. She only said the truth in the discussion with Rhaenyra - Its too late. Alicent can only make a good decision for herself now - keep quiet. There is no way some kind of "i misinterpretation his last words" nonsense would lead to anything. Well, maybe it would lead to her own death, but for sure it wont prevent the war.
To sum up with the end of the episode Alicent realized she royal fucked up. I much prefer the book version of the story but damn did this episode say out loud you fucked up Alicent. I know her father and others were already plotting but both parties now realizing viserys was right to keep rhaenyra as his heir
She should've known she was being manipulated far sooner. Otto and others kept claiming rhaenyra was gonna kill aegon to ensure her rule, but if that were the case she wouldve never offered to unite their families through marriage last season. Alicent is about as dumb as a box of rocks in this show, a flipping Muppet, and I can't wait for the end of the series when aegon falls due to the very people she trusted.
yeah there is absolutely zero nuance here. even the killing of jahereas is now justified because all heirs will have to be squashed for this conflict to end since alicent plans on going through with trying to steal rhyneras throne.
You guys must be the slowest in the bunch lol you are watching a RUclips channel that gives spoilers. I never read the books . Watching channels like this is how I learned 😂😂😂and also they talk about it in GOT, How Reyn dies and Aegon 🤦♀️🫣 but don’t worry the show isn’t following the exact story.. maybe they won’t die👁️👁️ who knows
@Zola_6 the problem is this channel posts videos and says on them if there will be spoilers for future content. People who just want the guys reaction to an episode they watched is not the same. I've read both asoiaf and fire and blood, so I know what happens. The show will obviously follow most of what has been written. But for those people who just wanted a reaction from something already released, may have just had some of the ending spoiled for them.
In the scene at Harrenhall when Lord Strong asks Daemon "What's next" after raising the army at the Riverlands then responds with surprise when the only response is "We take King's Landing," I didn't take that as Strong being obtuse. To me, it sounded like disgust at the bourgeois aristocracy still thinking only of themselves and having no other plan for the realm than taking back, by force and at great expense to the small folk, the seat of power so they could continue doing exactly what the other guy on the throne is already doing now. It sounded to me like "Really, that's your WHOLE plan, like nothing of substance or contribution to anyone whatsoever? Why even support you?" And when Rhaena is sent off with the little guys and the baby dragons and the dragon eggs, it seems like it finally sinks in for her how important her role in this war really is and what she is being trusted to do. Is anyone else irritated AF about the missed opportunity in the sept when Rhaenyra elects NOT to explain the whole prophecy to Alicent, which might THEN make a difference in stopping this war? No, she only listens for what matters to her and leaves Alicent in the dark, which results in Alicent doubling down on her current position. Rhaenyra had all the power in this situation to form an alliance by explaining the full story on why something greater and existential at stake and she refuses, now disaster is inevitable. To me, that moment is the point of no return in this whole story. For the record, I'm still not on either side. They all brought this stupid war on themselves, Rhaenyra included, and it's not like one aristocrat over another makes any difference at all for all the civilians stuck living under these stupid monarchies. I'm just here to root for the dragons.
As far as Gwayne goes you can be the eldest son and still have an older sister. They are not saying he is the oldest of the children just the oldest boy
@ThinkStory I like the ending. I like Alicent but......she (Obdurate), Otto, Cole, Larys Strong (Murderer and sneaky), and King Visery REALLY caused this war!
I liked the part where Gwayne sheepishly thanks Criston for spotting the dragon and saving their asses😂 I think they'll start out sort of hostile but they'll develop a bromance as the season goes on.
Book doesn't have this annoying forced friendship Alicent is 10 years older than Rhaenyra and has always wanted Aegon to be king. She was involved in usurpation. Hotd gave her " misunderstood derilous man" plot...that doesn't matter because Otto woud crown aegon either way.
Honestly I hate how the writers keep writing these characters to be more cautious and less temperamental than they are in the book. Makes the show feel really lacks the brutal realism of the original book. And it diminished the whole point of Lucerys’ death, which is the breakdown of Rhaenyra’s desire for peace and the official start of the war. They should just cut the added morality they chose to give, and let the dragons dance.
The way he wrote the fire and blood book was In a way that left it open to interpretation as he wrote it like a second hand account of the actual events
I think Viserys' statement about Aegon was a prophecy-like reference to Jon Snow as the Prince who was promised. As his real name was Aegon and he technically played a vital role in the uniting the kingdoms in the time of the Great War against the Night King.
10:15 Bastards are given their names by the place they grew up in, not the place they were born. The Sand-Snakes are als sands while half of them weren't born in Dorne. Jon is known to be born south, but still bears the name Snow. Brynden Rivers is born in Kings Landing, but doesn't have the name Waters. (Edit: It's of course Brynden not Brandon)
@@leykimayri definitively the place they grew up. Brynden Rivers (Bloodraven) is Aegon IV Bastard. If it had anything to do with the father, he would be a Waters. Edit: There is also Edric Storm, who should be a Flower if it's for the mothers or a Water if it's for the fathers (seeing that Robert is king at this point and Bastards from the crown lands are Waters).
I personally liked this change from the book. It just sets the tone for the upcoming war and at least, Alicent knows, all of these were birthed from some misunderstanding.
I enjoyed this. One thing I would mention - I think it is meaningful that Damon wants to be called Your Grace. Are there now three contenders for the throne? I haven't read the books, so I couldn't say. But it's an interesting development if that's Damon's intention.
I think his insistence on the usage of proper titles is to demonstrate he's still loyal to Rhaenyra's cause as opposed to being against it. I personally would just prefer as a story that the selfish man we meet in episode 1 boldly sitting on the throne himself, hoping to be the heir instead of an Uncle, now sincerely fights to place Rhaenyra's butt on that same throne instead of his own, even when she's angry at him, while still remaining true to his inner Rogue. Character growth and all.
Another question for me is, did Rhaenyra ever understand that people already died in her name? All those noble lords and ladies that Otto murdered in season 1 episode 9 to cement Aegons legacy also forcing all the nobles in the royal court to pledge him fealty for all to see. How can Rhaenyra expect that those families will just roll over and say okay because she and Alicent were able to make a deal?
At 6:00 you mention Aegon II younger brother Daeron in Oldtown. But the photo is of a different Daeron. The photo is of a future Daeron I Targaryen, a future King and born much later. Not the same person.
Iam fine with last scenem it doesn't alter the course of event ,and further adds a layer of tragedy also shows how rhae really did everything before she decided to take the only coutse of action left war.
6:06 The pic is actually the king Daeron I. Targaryen. He rules way after the Dance, he’s actually a grandson of Rhaenyra. Daeron the Daring (Aegon II. youngest brother) lived way earlier and looks different.
Couldn't believe Rhaenyra's Council actually pulled the " it's ok honey, the men will take care of it" when suggesting she get somewhere safe while they went into battle mode. Points to Rhaenyra for keeping her cool.
It's hit or miss sometimes when they deviate from the books, but I for one was JAZZED when Rhaenerya went to speak to Alicent. Anytime they are on screen together I am riveted to it. My favorite thing about the episode was Alicent's brother, I LOVE that actor so much. He's delightfully snarky and smarmy in other things so I look forward to his inclusion. The other thing I enjoyed very much was Rhaenys, I absolutely love her character. It was cool to see Rhaenerya looking to her for advice, the Queen Who Never Was. Wouldn't it be cool if Rhaenys got to be Rhaenerya's hand instead of Corlys???
Hi! The picture that you picked wasn't Prince Daeron, son of Viserys I, but that was KING Daeron, son of Aegon III. Prince Daeron doesn't really have an official picture that we know of, but the Wiki has some fanmade ones.
Daemon's walk through Harrenhal in his full set of armor wielding his trusty longsword Dark Sister felt like what a PlayStation 6 remake of Dark Souls would look like. How about "Daemon Souls".
Alys River implying that Daemon will die at Harrenhal means as far as I can see, that the series will make Daemons death official. In the book, Daemons body cant be found, after he fough Aemond at God's eye. As both of their dragons die in the sea, while Daemon put his sword through Aemonds eye and killed him. How much would they change from the books? My understanding is that Rhaenyra never rides any dragon other than Syrax. But for there is at least one promo they showed, is a giant dragon's head or face emerging from behind Rhaenyra, most likely Vermithor as he is the only other dragon close to Vhagar in size. Does that mean she'll ride Vermithor to war?
Man, Freddie Fox(Gwayne) looks like a young Eric Stoltz, but with all the movies they've been in together and him now following his footsteps into an ASOIAF show I kinda think he might be Tywin(Charles Dance's) Illegitimate son
Also important to remember of the visits to Kings landing is that these people had no TV or even photos. Even The most famous would not be recognized, making the visits possible.
He Read fire and blood and he's been creating content for quite sometime so he's very proficient in making these type of récap/review/breakdown episodic videos.

All that misunderstanding could have been avoided by putting that blade under fire and reading what it says 🤦🏻♂️
Literally! I find myself getting angry at how easy this would be to figure out! 🤦🏼♀️
The first casualty in war is the truth.
its an element of tragedy
How would that avoid anything? "the prince that was promised" is up to interpretation.
or by just not naming every other child Aegon
The allegiances, the quotes, the references in the book, even the bastard naming convention really helps me understand the show better. Awesome content.
I realized after watching this episode that "the prince that was promised" doesn't refer to a person but refers to the blade and it's holder. The translation could read as prince or princess so it is assumed that the valerian steel blade as fine as this would be held by Targaryen but could really be referring to the blade being used to fulfill the prophecy.
Yeah, then it makes sense when Arya kills the night king. . .
It refers to Aegon Targaryen AKA Jon Snow
You said it was Blood that was hung and being eaten, it's actually Cheese. Cheese is the rat catcher.
This is a minor detail, but the green and gold flags are green because of the Hightowers, but gold is because Aegon's dragon Sunfyre is golden and is the most beautiful dragon ever.
Why are Tullys always out of it? They always have an ailing Lord.
Maybe the Riverlands are meant to be this world's version of America?
They get some strapping young lads who actually do stuff later in the season.

If the show follows the books you'll be sick of the riverlands in no time, get wiped nonstop but have armies for days. Hardest part about the book for me was accepting that armies meant nothing.
@@Bwkjam oh really? >.>
I hated that Alicent was told the truth. TBH that misinterpretation was the only thing that made me sympathetic towards the Green's side. Now that Alicent knows the truth, I find it hard to have even a little sympathy towards the Green's.
Exactly the showrunners intention.
They clearly have a favourite side.
Exactly.
But he never changed mind on Rhaenyra being his heir. He literally dragged himself to throne despite duying to help her.
To sum up with the end of the episode
Alicent realized she royal fucked up. I much prefer the book version of the story but damn did this episode say out loud you fucked up Alicent. I know her father and others were already plotting but both parties now realizing viserys was right to keep rhaenyra as his heir
Yes!!! She knew she messed up but it’s too late.
I think is realistic, people like Alicent will NEVER assume that they fucked up, even if they are proved wrong they will NEVER accept they are wrong.

Why even support you?"
And when Rhaena is sent off with the little guys and the baby dragons and the dragon eggs, it seems like it finally sinks in for her how important her role in this war really is and what she is being trusted to do.

Excellent summary
I think Viserys' statement about Aegon was a prophecy-like reference to Jon Snow as the Prince who was promised. As his real name was Aegon and he technically played a vital role in the uniting the kingdoms in the time of the Great War against the Night King.
Or the Aegon that actually reunited the Kingdoms
10:15 Bastards are given their names by the place they grew up in, not the place they were born. The Sand-Snakes are als sands while half of them weren't born in Dorne. Jon is known to be born south, but still bears the name Snow. Brynden Rivers is born in Kings Landing, but doesn't have the name Waters. (Edit: It's of course Brynden not Brandon)
Is it the place they grew up or the place that their father is from?
@@leykimayri definitively the place they grew up. Brynden Rivers (Bloodraven) is Aegon IV Bastard. If it had anything to do with the father, he would be a Waters.
Edit: There is also Edric Storm, who should be a Flower if it's for the mothers or a Water if it's for the fathers (seeing that Robert is king at this point and Bastards from the crown lands are Waters).
I personally liked this change from the book. It just sets the tone for the upcoming war and at least, Alicent knows, all of these were birthed from some misunderstanding.
And that helps how? Bloodshed is doomed to happen whether it was because of a misunderstanding or a true conviction, it's far too late now
@@sayanickolay4261 Now, yes, but at least it makes more sense now
Rewach ep 9. Last season. Otto and his supporters were planning to crown Aegon, Alicent apparently not knowing that.
I enjoyed this. One thing I would mention - I think it is meaningful that Damon wants to be called Your Grace. Are there now three contenders for the throne? I haven't read the books, so I couldn't say. But it's an interesting development if that's Damon's intention.
He wants to be called your grace because he is married to the queen. He isn't just a prince anymore.
The women married to kings were also always adressed as Your Grace, why shouldn't he be as King consort?
Show made both her and Alicent into "peace, pls 😭😭😭" caricatures
At 6:00 you mention Aegon II younger brother Daeron in Oldtown. But the photo is of a different Daeron. The photo is of a future Daeron I Targaryen, a future King and born much later. Not the same person.

Alys River implying that Daemon will die at Harrenhal means as far as I can see, that the series will make Daemons death official. But he on the other hand, is completely gone, no one can find him so we have no idea whether he died or survived. But she said Daemon would die at Harrenhal, which might confirm his death.
