- The Nikon 35mm F1.4 Z lens is here, and it's an interesting lens for Nikon since it's being priced as the budget lens despite its 1.4 large aperture.
In this video, I do a review of this lens and also run a comparison with the other 35mm prime options, the Nikkor 35mm F1.8 S lens and the Sigma F mount 35mm F1.4 Art lens.Which lens would you choose as the best 35mm prime for Nikon Z cameras?

I have had the 35mm F1.8 for several years but was never greatly inspired to use it much. It's not quite as sharp as the 50mm F1.8. The IQ is fine, but just fine. I have the 35mm F1.4 and I am very inspired to pick it up everyday. The flaws that you highlight make the pictures interesting to me.
First, the lens is sharp, but less than the 35mm F1.8. However, I see it like comparing a photo of a face to an artist pencil drawing or painting of the face, which is not as sharp as the photo, but doesn't need to be. The painting moves me more than the photo.
The purple fringing is easily removed by one click in post. The lens has a slight amount of lens flare, which is good. The 1.4 aperture lowers my iso 50-60% wide open and that's good with the Z8 for lower noise. It also has one thing reminiscent to my old 50mm F1.2 ais and that's a slight glow wide open that adds pop to my low light pictures. I like the bokeh wide open. I love this lens.
The lesser sharpness and bokeh rendition could be appealing to some. Totally understand this 👍🏼
I see your picture control is RP . Can you give me some advice?
Advice on what specifically?
what about micro contrast? my friend choose the sigma 35mm art because its makes the picture more pop up like 3d when doing portrait,, how about the 35m 1.4 nikon ? its give better and 3D look ??
IMO the Sigma has better micro contrast and has a better pop look to it
I can confirm the shortcomings of the 35 1.4 z lens compared to the Sigma. It is not as sharp. the fringing is clearly there, but it also exists in the sigma. However, the Nikon is not that far off (it is sharper than most lenses) and has a very unique character, especially for portraits. With the added weight of the ftz adapter, the sigma is twice the weight. It is heavier than the nikon Z7II. I ended up trading the Sigma and bought the Nikon. I don't really regret it as I have no more hesitation when it comes to carrying the camera and a few lenses, even if the sigma was my most used lens for a very long time.
Thanks for sharing an alternative point of view of someone who has also used the sigma 👍🏼
One thing I didn’t mention in the video is that I actually took this new lens out for a paid shoot, and was less than satisfied. The lack of sharpness really shows when compounded with high iso situations. It may look fine in ideal scenarios, but not so in challenging situations.
Thanks for the review, Zachary. I agree with your point of view about the lens. Very interesting what you said about the purple fringing.
I was quite surprised by the amount of CA.
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
How to use your phone for screen capture videos?
Look up the Accsoon Seemo
And people say im crazy that my sigma art super old renders more beautiful, also i feel is sharper in the center. I dont like my 35 1.8s but i use it cuz is smaller and lighter
That’s a the reason I’m still holding on to the sigma art !
Interesting Lens and seems to be equal to the S 1.8 Lens apart from price
I’ll still prefer the 1.8 S personally.
What a huge disappointment
It has its merits. Low cost, small and light for a 1.4.
