I work at a lumber yard and I interact with the Amish just about everyday. They're the nicest people you'll ever meet and their construction and woodworking skills are far more superior than anything else I've ever seen.

I'm born in the modern world. but a life like this is what I like. simple and have been to other countries exploring. and the Amish in Ohio is the friendliest I have ever met. even though I'm Muslim they accepted me in their homes and community due to one of the son in same school as me when I'm in the USA. not all Amish are close minded. some have developed well and embrace and welcome other religion. maybe 1 in 30 Amish family will do that but its changing soon. and when the family visited me in Singapore they stay with us for 1 week as my family have 3 extra rooms. we don't put any religious signs in any of our rooms so anybody will feel comfortable as we respect all religion. Amish people are super friendly but cautious. would love to go to Kentucky where they have moved and visit one day. and till now 15 years I'm still in touch with the Amish family I knew. god bless them

same stress as a human, just a different way of doing the day to day things like getting to the store, and if they farm the way they do that. I work with this people everyday at there homes and business. and they have drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, sexual abuse, depression, misuse of funds in business... every bad thing we have and they have the good as well. one thing they have that is so lacking in "English" is true "community" they do not have internet social media fake relationships, they quilt together, hunt together, Church together, vacation together. and that goes a long way.

@Chickennugget you need to dig more in your history. as a muslim, I totally respect the amish. they choose to live that life. I respect Christians, Jews, etc because my religion says, everyone has a mind and heart to choose his faith, but what I don't accept and what I don't respect is claiming that Islam killed many people way far than any religion. first of all religions do not kill, people do, and there is a difference between a religion and its followers. second, Islam didn't kill entire contents to occupy and live on others lands. third, Islam didn't launch wars to colonize countries and suck their gold, diamond or oil. forth, Islam didn't massacre nations like the Jews. fifth, Islam didn't bomb villages and towns with nuclear weapons. sixth, Islam didn't start WW1 or 2. seventh, Islam is not putting its nose on everyone's business nowadays on the name of democracy. Islam is just the scapegoat everyone is using to erase the horrible history and to kill facts. I suggest you relax, eat some chicken nuggets and educate yourself.

Just to be clear, the Amish don't all live like this. Electricity and plumbing aren't banned in every community. Their unifying belief is in a simple life without unnecessary advances. But that understanding differs. Some don't find technology as intrusive as others. What might surprise people is that the Amish have been known to form cartels. They aren't simpletons with a monolithic belief. They're people.

I am planning a farm which is both modern for utilities and yet is very similar to amish lifestyle. It is a shame the amish arent more open to teaching others traditional skills.

Sure, you can be Amish! First you have to learn to speak/read German, "Pennsylvania Dutch" which is a common language of German, Dutch, and English., because the holy bible you'll be reading every day is in German. Then you spend a year or two in a "proven" lifestyle. Proving to the church elders that you are serious about being Amish; completely living the Amish way. You will do, wear, pray, work, live everything Armish. Then you may be accepted and allowed to be baptized. Only then can you pick your new slave wife and marry, after you're baptized. Easier to get a microwave and a dishwasher. Oh Ya no electricity, cars, TV, cellphones, power tools, etc. and you get up at 4:30-5:00 am. Work your farm/job six days a week until 7pm. The horses you'll need for your buggy? They have few indiscretions at to where they'll sh!t, so get yourself a shovel before you move in, lol....

Bilb Ono converting English to Amish is very challenging but doable they like to keep everything in the community or surrounding community each one has there own set of rules some stricter than others... They speak English and pennsilvania Dutch you would have to learn the language and culture and it isn t as simple as you see in videos... when you convert to Amish or Mennonite you are giving up everything you know and love from the outside world.... Also if you decide to leave the Amish you are shunned and your family cannot talk to you unless the church says other wise.... I just watched a Biograhy on the Amish.... it was very interesting.
