Ok, I'm going to say it. Jelly Roll rugs are a 1920's era of homemade rug given a new name. My grandmum taught me how to make these way back in the 60's when I was a kid. I bought the pattern thinking there would be something new in how it was made. There wasn't. It's exactly the same. The only difference is the original ones were made from the fabric of worn out clothes and old blankets, quilts used for the filler. All that said your video is fantastic. You really walked people through the process incredibly well.
Ive watched a number of other videos on jellyroll rug making but not had as much fun as i did watching this one! You are hysterical and i now feel like i can do one of these rugs!! Yeah!!! ❤❤
LOL--reminds me of the story about my great-grandma's room-sized hooked rug. She had collected old clothes from various family members to make the strips, and when the rug was finished, they held a "rug-warming party." Before long, everyone was down on the floor, exclaiming, "Oh, there's a piece of my dress!" or "There's a bit of Nat's pants!" Great-gram just sat there shaking her head. ;-) Wish I could have been there, but it was before my time!
I made a braided rug from my sons jeans. It was awesome. I had it in my storage unit when I moved and I was robbed. All my film photos too. Lost mementos, not memories.
Batting tape? Gotta run! We’re about to move into a new home and one of these for each of my grands bedrooms will be perfect! I haven’t seen an approximation of the finished size, I know its variable, but a hint will be fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing, and to the designer for allowing us to watch.
I am a Indian but I like your method of sewing. I don't understand your pronunciation some time and I now little bit of English but form your technique I sew a reversible hobo bag . It looking very nice
So happy to know even the pros get part way through a pattern and realize "oh - they really meant that" :-) Great tips, I'm looking forward to making my first one soon!
Oh my goodness! I was late learning about jelly roll quilts! Now I'm late learning about jelly roll rugs! So glad to be late than never!! This is better than gorgeous!!❤
So GLAD that I found this video. I cannot tell you how many times I read the incomplete instructions that I purchased at a quilt shop. I know I'm smart but the instructions were just lacking! LOVE your fabric choices & your energy! I have subscribed to your videos. I'm sure I have some watching to do now. Thank you for all of your wonderful tips on making the rug.
What I love about watching your videos. I appreciate the fact that you actually show or explain mistakes that did happen or could happen and we can see (or you tell us of course) different mistakes that have happened. I am dyslexic and I have spent many of hours ripping my sewing out even though you read patterns everyone reads it differently. lol I have bought this pattern actually twice now lol. I had one that I bought years ago exactly forgot I had it in storage when I moved and bought it again. Soooo Hoping I can dig it out after im done with the project I am on now and ill be viewing into Mister Domestic for all your great knowledge. Keep it up love to watch you work and have fun all at the same time.
LOVED this video!! Mr. Domestic is AWESOME! I just discovered him on RUclips during this pandemic and have been watching as much as possible ever since. I'm a new FAN of Mr. Domestic.
your tutorial was very informative and made me smile. i noticed that you stitched both sides of the strips before you zig zaged them. i hadn't seen that before. i guess that would make the zig zagging easier. loved the fabrics that you chose. thanks for the tips.
Im right there right now, just finished one roll of batting. I totally watched this video and decided right there to go out and get my own colors and make this sexy rug. I totally have the same setup under my table. Excellent thinking.
First, you are too darned cute and fun to watch.. love that you love your material, I am so happy with ALL my fabric. Second, a ring thread cutter?? I am in love! I am finding right now to order! I just ordered my batting in a roll and have this pattern. I am still watching your video but wanted to say you have made me smile so far..
I’ve made many crocheted rag rugs and know there is a trick to keeping them flat so it makes sense that there would be little tricks to keeping your rug from going wonky. I loved watching you little tricks like putting the strips on a hanger. I just subscribed and I hope to see the rest of your videos. I can’t wait to do a jelly roll rug. Oh, your colors are beautiful.
I learned a lot from your video. I do have one tip that I learned making my rug. Use a ditch walking foot. It keeps your zigzag stitch lined up and makes things even easier!
I have watched and struggled on my first - but your hint of using a bit more tension on the loose strand being sewn has done it for me -thanks, and I switched to my walking foot and everything fell into place!
Hi I'm from Spanish Ontario... that's near Elliot lake/ Sudbury..I'm a experienced sewer, with that in mind it was a joy to watch as you whittled through..I'm now inspired..😅 🎉
I have made one already but your tips are spot on! I love the hanger tip! And holding the rug loosely while keeping the other taut.....can’t wait to try it. Loved this video.
I enjoyed your video and your roll feeding hanger inspired me to make something to help feed the jelly roll fabric after it is sewn end to end and the roll of batting for sewing. The sewing process of getting those two items sewn into the "rope" is taking a bit of time, but it is turning out wonderfully and I am sure the feeding "mechanism" really helping it go more smoothly than it would have otherwise gone. Thanks again, loved your presentation.
You are so fun! I adore your energy and playful sense of humor. What a joy! I subscribed 30 seconds into your video. Looking forward to learning more from you😊
You are a cutie. I'm really impressed that you've replied to all the comments - shows what a good person you are! PS Enjoyed the video too. This rug is on my bucket list and I've moved it to the top now. Thanks
Oh my gosh you look great. Darn, child you look amazing your hair, your voice, you got skills. Love your energy. You look healthy. I adore you. Thanks for sharing your positive energy. Be well. Take care ! Sending Love to protect you & appreciation to encourage you to continue. Great project.
OMG so glad I found you it makes something I've never tried look so much fun .Just subscribed, hope you've got some learners quilting, Hi from Tasmania Australia!
OH.EM.GEE! I laughed AND learned at the same time! Your sense of humor is FANTASTIC and your laugh is contagious!!! I just bought the rectangle pattern for this and I'm hoping beyond hope that the technique and tips are basically the same. How could they be THAT different? HA! Once I get the pattern and batting, I'll find out! Thanks for making my day, my new friend! X
Oh my! How gorgeous!! I love the colors in jelly rolls 💗 Always see them at Joann's Fabric and on eBay. But never bought any because I saw them to be too small for a large quilt. Now I'm going to buy a few and make some beautiful rugs thanks to you 👍😀. I love your videos and your fun personality. So bubbly, cheerful and very creative 👍☺
WOW so many tips and tricks to save time and I have now lernt a better way of joining jelly rolls Thank you for your share of your wonderful idea Hugs from Milton Keynes UK
Hi, just found your enjoyable site. I cute my own fabric & followed the pattern exactly. My rug curled so I am now using my seam ripper in an attempt to try it again. I did the ironing as suggested but it looked as if both sides had to much fabric & would not lay flat. Thank you for sharing yours went wonky too. I am going to keep trying love the fun rug! You did a great job!
I JUST finished your video and immediately ordered the pattern you linked in the description (albeit the PDF version)! Thanks for such a great tutorial!!
I just discovered your channel today. Loving your tutorial style! (Lol, loved the emergency alarm stop in the middle of the process, haha.) The colours of your rug are just so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
This was an awesome tutorial to accompany my pattern! I wasn't sure whether to use Roma's 1/4" seam or the 1/8" specified in the video, I used the 1/4" and then realized why the 1/8" would have been the better choice, as it ensures that you will catch all layers! Also, the tip about the flat surface and the use of Best Press...YUP!!! I will totally make more of these rugs, a fun project and great guidance...thank you!
I am enjoying you so much man! I am just getting back into sewing after um like 40 years? 😕 so shout out from Cuyahoga county ohio(Cleveland). Found you this morning ... Power on !
Do you have a tip for detecting when the bobbin is out of thread? And can you tell me about how many bobbins I will go through using about 40 strips? I bought 12 bobbins and filled 8. Thank you, love the video!
Love the fabrics! Thanks for all the tips, I’m starting small. A rug for my dog she slobbers all over when drinking, figure a small rug will be perfect and I can throw it in the washer
You friggin crack me up. I have to admit I'm a pattern skimmer, so I could totally see myself doing this and happening upon little tid bids of OH CRAP wait where is the pattern lolol. Great video.
I love your video, and used the hanger method. I didn't use the precut 2.5" batting (it seems to be sold out everywhere), so I cut my own out of king size batting by the yard. I prepared the jelly roll piece and sewed the batting together one night. Today, I made the roll. I don't know HOW you could have done it in 3 30-minute sessions . . . it took me 2 movies and 2 episodes of Sherlock to get the robe ball done! Of course, I did take a few breaks (gotta eat and feed the kids, etc). One thing that may have taken me longer is that every 18" I would fold and finger press each section, then sew. The ball is now done, and I will start the zigzag part after work tomorrow.
Those colours are so ‘me’. I am doing up a 1970’s log cabin/Swedish sauna style home. It came with original teal wood grain kitchen and turquoise and teal drapes. I paired the Teals with cerise and eggplant, a touch of avocado and navy.
Very helpful as my 2nd rug I made at midnight was like a sombrero 😣your hint" taunt" may have been the best trick! Great color choice, great presentation! Ty MJ
The rug turned out delicious!!! Love the colors you picked out. Just stumbled upon your videos last night. So glad I did. Now I need to name my 3 machines. Thinking about Chris(Hemsworth), Scott(Eastwood), and Ryan(Gosling)😁
Have you tried, when you sew your folded, batting-filled strips with the straight stitch, putting the whole strip under the foot and moving your needle to the far left? It looks like you could still get an 1/8th inch-from-the-edge seam and the strip would feed through more nicely for you.
OMG!! love your video I had fun watching it. Thank you for all the tips, I learned a lot today. Love the fabric. I am just a beginner and i am learning new every day by watching video tutorials. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. God Bless.
Your rug is beautiful! I made one and took it all apart because it was so wonky, I ironed it every few rows, used starch, and now I'm trying it again. I will try to hold that strip tight just like you did and I hope that it works this time because it is a hassle to sit and take all of those stitches apart to do over.
You are a riot! I’m not gonna lie. I’m a little obsessed with your beautiful teeth! LOL After watching this I’m going to have to make one of these. Thanks for the great tips!
Awesome tips! I need to get another roll of the katahdin and I can start... Great tips, I think I will borrow the toilet paper holder, floor stand I have for the 2 strips after seeing your setup. Should work the same. Your rug is gorgeous, thanks for sharing...
I had the same idea on the toilet paper holder. I have an extra one that I thought I would use. I even thought that the empty toilet paper roll would be good to wrap the strip around.
Love your color choices and your tutorial! Going on a sewing weekend starting this Thursday. Going to make one! (Maybe 2?). You make it look easy...here’s hoping! I subscribed to your channel. You bring the joy. Kudos!
@mxdomestic Quick question because I couldn't exactly tell in your video. Did you trim the beginning of your tube as stated in the pattern under MAKE THE FABRIC & BATTING TUBE?
looks like you have a brother, sewing machine, i have one, what kind of walking foot i should get for the brother sewing embroidery machine. I need to make a rug for my dogs, how many strips of jelly roll,
