I have had this pattern for a few years and heard so many complaints about it, that I never attempted it. I think this will be my year to give it ago. Thanks for your tutorial. I really makes this possible.
Great tutorial, thank you! I find it very refreshing that you give your honest opinion about everything and you pass along all the tips that you have learned.
You're welcome! I want you all to know when I really love something and when I think it is necessary to do a project right, verses would be nice to have.
You did a great job on the tutorial. I especially like how you introduced new products and honestly said whether they would help you on the project. I like that you leave your mistakes and don't edit them out.
Thank you for the tips! In addition to the ones shown, a few others I picked up along the way: apply spray sizing to the length of the strip of fabric as you are ironing the seams open, etc. (allow to the fabric strip to dry before assembly), place the bosal batting roll on a dollar store paper towel roll holder to allow it to feed easily and loved the Jerry Jelly Roll Jig with wonder clips during assembly. Did not have to iron once--laying nice and flat on my sewing room floor ever since! Enjoy :)
@@QuiltAddictsAnonymous I would actually try to finagle the paper towel roll, mounted under the table somehow (straight right below -- maybe use a broom handle??... My PT holder has a strong magnet to hold the roll either standing up or sideways - I'd make it perpendicular to the floor, in front of my knees 🤔 holds onto the metal legs of the table... AND put the band of fabric, in a rectangle basket - the end fed up thru an open side handle, on the floor too! This may make it easier to keep both pieces of batt & fabric feed together straight into the machine... Less manipulation. All we can do is give it a try... This would be my version of an ideal set-up 😊
@@susanhenshaw639I am wondering about using a portable hose reel. Wind the long strip of fabric on one. And possibly use another reel for the wadding/batting. Then both reels wind as the fabric and batting come together for sewing
Thank you for showing us the dropped stitches and the "too thick" errors and what to do. Starting Sewers will automatically think they are doing something wrong and feel frustrated. Thank you. This is a project that I want to do in the near future, but I had no idea what was involved. I want to make rugs for inside my tent while camping, this looks like a great method.
I just looked back at a video you did in October 2018. What a difference! I love the new look you're getting in your studio with all the white, better light, and more space. Nicely done
I have made several JRR's but I always check for new videos, never know what you might learn. Right now I am making two runners in patriotic fabrics, one for my dining table and one for a table I have in the kitchen. I am making these WITHOUT batting and they are turning out great. I still have trouble on those curves but I stick with it and always love the results.
thanks very much for this, your problem solving was particularly helpful, it's good to know that everyone has their machine kick back at them from time to time.
I was thinking the binding maker would work great for this. But I’m sure that is thinner then the batting would handle. Love the color choice you used. This seems to be a good kids project once you get it going. Great video. Thank you! Have a great day! 🌺
I'm so glad I haven't "jumped in" to make one of these yet since now there are so many more tips, etc. out there. I did invest in a "Jerry's Jellyroll Jig" after seeing those demonstrated. Similar to this clip, just doesn't clip. Thank you so much for doing this to learn more :)
Love your videos! Suggestion, I use a long piece of cardboard instead of the ball method you used, it has less or no twist and stays flat for the next step. Sincerely, Ms Karin
Do u know one time I made a smaller one and it was used for a hot pad!!! Yes you can make these for hot pads and it works amazingly. Thank you for all of your tips on this project.
So glad I rewatched this. I bought RJ Designs instructions but some part of my brain just couldn't get it. The turned corner flipped up immediately. My machine balked at the extra fabric. Ultimately I went to bed in defeat. I am going to rip and start fresh tonight. I think I was trying to pull the fabric tight so my machine would go over it. Keeping my fingers crossed I will get a good start going tonight.
I’m wondering if you release the pressure on your presser foot, at the beginning, it may help get through the initial thickness?? Thanks for the video!
Great video! I have made a couple of placemats, and have had a little trouble catching the fabric on the underside. I discovered that the widest zigzag stitch my machine has is4.6mm. Do you think that will be an issue on a rug? I have been doing the stitch on the long strips in the middle....would it be better if I do it closer on the folded side? I have heard that makes it puffier.
I always use the stitch setting recommended in the pattern. I've had issues with the rug getting wavy if I choose anything else. Please refer to your pattern for the recommended stitch setting.
I've discovered that stretching the batting just slightly and shooting it with steam, then folding the edges of the fabric/batting and steaming the folded strip as I clip it together makes the coil much easier to handle when sewing. Too true on using batting scraps: only the lightest weight cotton batting will work well (just bought a roll of QD cotton so there are more batting scraps to come.
Nice video. Do you have a video that shows shots from the sewing perspective? Above facing the machine with the first few steps of establishing the oval? Good luck I like how you incorporate feedback!

Probably still about 8 hours. I don't think the tool saved any time, but if you struggled with getting the fabric and batting turned in, I think it is useful for helping with that step.
Is it difficult to sew an 80 strip oval rug? I’m in the middle of sewing the tube at strip 37, I’m wondering if I should continue or stop at 40. Any thoughts or tips would be helpful. 😊 Thank you
I am making a rug but not sewing the cord. I'm sewing the cord directly to the rug. Eliminating the sewing the cord end. Have you see a problem with this? Thanks
Maybe you could use wider strips of fabric, and fold over more times to make the strips thicker. Or use something else on the back, like a fleece/wool type blanket. Or old clothes cut into strips, that are similar thickness and not stretchy. Like clothes that are damaged or stained. A wool coat/suit/jacket/trousers, even from a second hand shop.
I think jelly roll is TM by Moda fabric, so important to not keep referring to other makes as jelly rolls throughout video. But a habit like saying hoover instead of vacuum. This rug is beautiful 😊
awesome tutorial...how long did it actually take...you mentioned something like 8 hrs for the older version and thot you sed something about this one taking less time...just planning my time...lol
I'm about 7 rounds into sewing the rug and I can see that eventually I am going to have a problem with too much rug under the arm of the machine. Did I start wrong? What can I do to fix this? Thank you.
@@buyorsellwithmelaniewells Thanks so much. The ends were "cupping" so I just decided to rip out what I had done and start over. You should have seen the thread on the floor of my studio!!! I was ironing it almost every round so I don't know what was causing the cupping. Thanks for all your help!

No I haven't, but for that one I'd work at a large table, like your dining room table, and set a table up next to you to help hold the weight of the rug to keep it from flopping over as you work. Both tables should have books stacked on them to make them even to the height of the sewing machine. That should help keep the waves at bay.
I've had the ball made for several years but can't work up the energy or nerve to try to sew it. I haven't seen anyone make this rug without the wobbly part popping up so I doubt I'd be able to. Like you said, its an expensive rug and it's frustrating that it's so difficult to complete.
I had the same problem. I have the ball sitting in my closet. I made the rug, and the edges were very wavy. I actually took the entire thing apart and started again, trying to be extremely careful, but had just about the same result. I got very frustrated, and decided to chalk this one up to a bad (and expensive) experience. There are so many quilting projects that I've enjoyed, but this wasn't one of them. Maybe I'll get brave someday and try it again, but it's certainly not a priority. I did enjoy Stephanie's video, but this one is not for me.

Nother thought... Why not put a large laundry basket on the opposite side of the table to catch the finished piece... Why roll it to cause more lumps, bumps and more work??
?!? Why a straight stitch when sewing the rug lengths together?? Wouldn't a zig zag stitch be better?? Otherwise there are hills and valleys in this rug... Is that the way it's supposed to be??
