I test drove both last month. The Rav4 has the soul of a minivan and the Eclipse Cross has the soul of a Rally Car. I bought the Eclipse.

Great unbiased review. I was shopping around between rav4 and eclipse cross and decided for mitsubishi. Reasons: mostly city driving, stylish more youthful design, especially inside; feels more spacious at driver seat than in toyota; easier egress, one if the better 4wheel drive system on the market, never got ne stuck in canaduan winter snow ...pretty soft comfortable ride. It is probably not as great on the highway in terms of handling , or maybe it is due to wintertires. Over a 1 year of ownership and I am quite happy, enjoy every time i drive it. And Alex has really great informative reviews.
This is 4 years later and my opinion has changed as I’ve gotten older and have had some seat time in the 21 Outlander Sport. To have a little more space and the comfort that has been spoken about as a taller person this speaks a lot. I’m just wondering how all these years later. How’s the ownership going? Im considering purchasing one now. Thank you
I own a 2018 Eclipse Cross. I love it. Its one of the best vehicles I have owned.
I’ve got a 2020 eclipse cross got 3200 miles on it so far and I love it. Traded up from a 2013 outlander sport so I’m definitely a Mitsubishi fan but this is a way better car and the dealer was running excellent specials.
How is road nose and pep from the engine? What trim did you get
Aaronix4 I got the SEL with all the safety features and leather trim just don’t have the double moon roof on mine. Road noise isn’t bad at all better than my old outlander sport for sure. Now there’s not a lot of pep from the engine especially on eco mode but if you use the paddle shifters you can really take off at a stop light.
@@WelchC8289 Hi. Eco mode is to be used with cruise control. The eco mode take all the "pep" out of the motor. Here in europe i have the 163hp version. Love the suv.
Yeah I totally love Mitsubishi myself. I got a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT and it great as 2 year mark is coming up. I feel with Mitsubishi, people get more for their money and better quality. My friend has a Toyota Corolla and the metal feels weak and cheap. I can literally hear an echo when I knock on his doors. On the Mitsubishi, the doors sounds and feel more solid. Mitsubishi is the hidden gem and worth every moment of ownership

Toyota and Honda simply ask way too much for their cars now. That's a big reason why Mitsubishi is quietly making a nice little comeback. Mitsu has always put the money in the things that matter, namely the powertrain and AWD. Things like ammenities, paint job, interior design, etc. Was always less quality than Honda or Toyota, that's how they're able to sell their cars for $4 to 5k less.
If you are going to buy a car and run it until the wheels fall off, the Mitsubishi is probably a good deal, with the discounts you can expect. Just don't expect a lot in resale value if you plan on trading in a few years.
It would depend on when the wheels fall off. I expect the Toyota would last a few years longer
@@temur72 With all manufacturers doing the whole planned obsolescence thing, we can all look forward to a key part failing after 100k miles to get us in a new car. Toyota lost a bunch of money having folks drive their cars for 20 years.

I love my new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL with Touring Package. Mitsubishis are know to be reliable and we have owned 5 Mitsubishis now and love them and 7 of us at my work own Mitsubishis.
Mitsubishis styling is very bold on this and you love or hate it but I love it and the rear end is my favorite part. Plus the rebates you get with Mitsubishi puts you thousands below the competitors. I got my top trim one stickered for around $33,000.00 and I got it for around $26,000.00 after discounts and rebates and you cant beat that. Plus the features like dual sunroofs, heated front seats, rear seats and steering wheel, sliding and folding rear seats, dual sone climate control, led head and tail lights, 710 watt 9 speaker rockford fosgate audio, push start, remote start and app services with Mitsubishi Connect, forward collision warning and mitigation, auto high beams, radar cruise, rain sensing wipers, lan departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, surround view cameras with front side and rear option views, and soooo much more! Add the 10 year warranty and reliability its unbeatable with the discounts. This is more of a stylish version in this class and is for someone who does not mine he looks taking away cargo room. Could not be happier with my Eclipse Cross!!!
Ehh new Mitsubishi vehicles suck, should of got a Pajero with a real automatic transmission.
These new Mitsubishis have those CVT transmissions, which are just built to fail.
And I'm not bashing on the brand just because, I love this brand ,and will never own another car brand.
LunaticRed EyeS88 this is our 5th mitsubishi with CVT and we have had no issues with them. There are 7 of us at my company that have Mitsubishi CVTs (Eclipse Cross, Mirage, Outlander, Outlander Sport and Lancer) and no issues. The oldest is a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer with around 165,000 miles now and a CVT and she has had fluid changed every 60,000 miles. Most CVT issues are due to lack of maintenance. I do agree CVTs are less reliable than standard autos but if you maintain your CVT properly it will be fine. If not Mitsubishi has the 10 year warranty so all good.
LunaticRed EyeS88 also I would love to have the Pajero Sport but they don’t make it here in the USA though, sucks! The only Mitsubishi in the USA that has a regular 6 speed automatic is the Outlander GT V6.

magnuscat Well thank you. Oh believe me I will. My best friend/co worker still has her Red 2015 Mirage from a few of my videos and has had it 5 years and 3 months with no issues! She will be getting the updated 2021 when it comes out in white she says. The Mirages truly are amazing little cars and anyone who says otherwise does not get the audience they were intended for. Mitsubishi made a very reliable, feature packed, extremely fuel efficient little car and it has shown as it has increased in sales every year since its launch here! I really love my Eclipse Cross but man do I miss my Mirage there was just sumin about those cars.
Another thing I will tell you I sure do miss the MPGs my Mirage gave me lol as Im only averaging about 22 mpg in the Eclipse Cross where my Mirage I averaged anywhere from 38 to 40 mpg on average but could top 50 mpg on the highway. On the highway best I can do on my Eclipse Cross is 27 mpg personally.

We have had a few Mitsubishi’s now. No problems whatsoever.
Test drove both, the 2022 rav4, (gas model) and the 2022 Mitsubishi eclipse cross (gas model). All I gotta say is that you get a lot more for your money when you go for the Mitsubishi. So we ended up buying an eclipse cross gt, and have no regrets!
My friend who had a 2020 rav4 TRD ended up trading it in for a Mazda cx30
We have used our own money and bought two Mitsubishi s due to our low wages here in Australia Toyotas are too expensive here.

Sorry for my English. I have got Mitsubishi eclipse cross in Russia in 2018. 50000 kilometers without problem in Russian summer, autumn, winter and spring. In addition I would like to say that this car very like me and in the future I would like to buy mitsubishi pajero sport 2020 (mabe)
Go for the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with the 2.7 petrol engine and manual gearbox instead of the Pajero.

I would prefer the Mitsubishi. I own a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT and it runs smooth and has the power to get going. On new cars, Mitsubishi has a better warranty on their cars than Toyota. Toyota just is too plain for my taste and it would seem just because its a Toyota, they want you to poor more money for the same tech a Mitsubishi has standard or close to it. People can get more for their money with a Mitsubishi

First off, I have not seen much positive about Mitsubishi's so your positive comments were enlightening. But the comparison was way to convoluted by choosing to use the hybrid. The regular RAV4 is a much less civilized SUV and even though you threw up stats for it, the ride and engine are much worse in the standard RAV4. You also couldn't compare real MPG in the standard RAV4. I would also be curious to see how good the AWD system in the Eclipse is on an off road test compared with a Subaru.

The Outlander lost the CA rebate/HOV lane access due to lack of range so it's pretty much doomed. The RAV and the Escape are the two that will be duking it out.
@@predpalina With 25MPG when using gas the Outlander PHEV is underwhelming. Rav4 Prime or perhaps the Ford PHEV SUV would be far better options
I think I would prefer the extra function of the Rav4. To me one of the big reasons to get a crossover is the cargo area.
actually both really good SUV's very similar too wouldn't be surprised if it was the same platform the more hp on the rav4 doesn't mean much since they have the same torque. CVT is the worst part of the mitsubishi but the warranty makes up for that and the fact they are super easy to replace
Alex, I have asked for this before but these two vehicles from the rear view point out somethng that I would like to see addressed - the distance from the ground to the cargo hatch sill. These two are several inches different. I think that this dimension is very important to those of us looking for ramp height for loading a wheelchair, etc. I would like to see you include it in your reviews.
Side by side comparison can get confusing. You need to keep the relative placement consistent throughout. The Mitsu was initially on the right - but later switched to the left.
I'd get the Eclipse Cross SEL SAWC or the Ford Escape Titanium AWD.
Mitsubishis are few and (relatively) far between in my area of southern CA. On the other hand, the Toyota RAV4 is almost a "fleet vehicle."
That's shocking considering Mitsubishi NA headquarters is in southern California, until they move to Tennessee.

I think you are comparing the wrong vehicles IMO, as you noticed the length of the toyota is quite a bit longer than the Eclipse. A good comparison would have been the Outlander vs the RAV4...both on length, cargo capacity, and price.
Im cross shopping these two vehicles so this is a good comparison for me.
Rear end of that eclipse cross reminds me of the Pontiac Aztek. Probably not the comparison Mitsubishi would like.

I miss it too but the market demands SUVs and CUVs now unfortunately. Not enough consumers are purchasing sporty coupes or sedans. Mitsubishi had to change with the times. Now when gas goes back to $4 a gallon we'll see what happens to the SUV craze. I love my 2014 Mirage though.
Just rented a RAV4 and I was very disappointed interior were so cheap.
The entire vehicle to me feels cheap and plain. No excitement. I've been in a 2019 for a rental and it was honestly a little sad.

@@JJustinXu I've been in the dealership..looked over and test drove a loaded adventure model and it was still the same car. Whether it is base model or not the car is still boring to drive and not all that nice interior wise.

I drove one a few days ago, like the design but wasn’t a fan. The steering was incredibly sloppy, like no feel at all. Turning the wheel felt like an arcade game. Acceleration was pretty bad too, not that it’s built for speed, but really couldn’t get out of its own way.
Great comparison video. I like your presentation where you talk in 1 car and move around in the other car to show the amount of freedom that you have in that car.

The difference in price is much bigger in reality than on paper. In the US, the RAV4's sell so well that one can get only a few thousand discount if that. Mitsubishi on the other hand, 3, 4, even 5k discount easily.
Woody Yu yup, in fact the new RAV4 have very little discounts. Personally the hybrid rav4 is very good but the normal one is very noise and bad power delivery.
Not to mention that 0% .99% financing. Toyota sits around 3-4%

The only things going for the Mitsubishi is the low cost of purchase, more negotiable pricing, lower interest rates & more stylish design. Otherwise the Toyota has it beaten is pretty much everywhere else.

Way better warranty too. Toyota and Honda ask way too much for their cars now.
The thing to consider is he is going strictly off MSRP values.. And Mitsubishi doesn't play that game. Go to any Mitsubishi dealer and that price will lower EXPONENTIALLY in comparison to anything Toyota. You will be walking out the door with an offer on paper thousands lower than the sticker.. Toyota price will remain the same. So really this comparison is a much higher priced Rav4 than the Eclipse cross, while the Eclipse will have more tech and options with lower price.
W K potentially, I’ve seen quite a few RAV4’s with heavy discounts and incentives too.
@@ALMX5DP ya I should have said that Toyota pricing will remain more similar to MSRP when compared to the discounting Mitsubishi swings but they will still be below their own MSRP. A dealer I just checked in with two weeks ago had brand new outlanders in, around 32-34k, but are already being discounted down to closer to a price of 26-28. That's what i got and i did not apply for all rebates like military and such. When I checked Toyota in person i couldn't get anything much more than 2k off because many of the rebates I simply didn't qualify for. After you take into account initial pricing of Toyota being higher you really begin to see the difference in comparison of Mitsubishi vs Toyota vehicles.
I got a sizeable discount on a new RAV hybrid, along with super cheap APR through TFS.
I can vouch for that my fully loaded new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL with Touring Package and S-AWC was around $33,000.00 msrp and we got it for around $26,000.00 couldnt beat that deal. Plus 5 year roadside assistance, 10/100,000 powertrain warranty and features galore and a top safety pick you cant go wrong.
We bought 2 Eclipse Crosses that day 1 Blue and 1 Red identical trims. We have had 5 Mitsubishis now and all have been reliable. 7 Mitsubishis at my work (2011 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and now our 2 new 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Crosses) and we all love them.
I know Honda and Toyotas are good cars but they are way overpriced, only come with 2 years roadside, only 5 year powertrain warranty (Mitsu covers you 10 years!), and the newer ones I have looked in seem to have really cheapened out the interiors.
W K this is why I switched to Mitsubishi back in 2014 and so glad I did. We have owned 5 now. You cant beat the upfront rebates and discounts plus they are very reliable and are Japanese (Mirage is Thailand built but is also reliable I had 2 Mirages).

Most people are not buying the hybrid. Most people will buy the regular RAV4. So why not compare the same type of vehicles? But even against the hybrid the Mitsubitshi is competitive!
We have a Toyota dealer in our city but no Mitsubishi dealership. That would make a difference.
I’m very interested in how the dichotomy works. Toyota is more apt to lose marketshare to Mitsubishi and Subaru; while Honda models are more likely to be cross-shopped with Hyundai.
Excellent detailed unbiased review, i like how the eclipse cross looks in front more than most vehicles these days, however the back is a huge letdown. it also looks awkward from the side where the rear bumper curves. it would be nice if Mitsubishi can revise the look of the cross in the back.
My first car was a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant that I got in 2002. I didn't know anything about cars back then except that you were supposed to drive them, so Needless to say I treated that car TERRIBLY! I never got a tune up the entire time that I had it, was always late with oil changes, ect... Despite all that it only broke down on me once because of a worn out sensor. It still ran perfectly (except the handling had gotten a little shaky) and I was even able to sell it to a mechanic in 2019 fo and received a pretty decent price for it.
I love the Mitsubishi styling but the reviews are so middling. Also, despite Mitsubishi's recent sales successes I'm skeptical that they can keep the momentum going and survive in the US market for much longer...…..I'm conflicted.

The RAV4 has blown like a tick after each generation and commanding 30K+ I find it expensive. I think a pre-owned highlander would be a better value.

Edit: I just looked it up and the US spec Gen 3 was the same width, but 1” longer than the current.
I guess that's a very good option if you can't afford the superior vehicle.
@@afcgeo882 It had a sliding second row, a hidden storage compartment in the back and an available V6. Don't get me wrong, this new Hybrid is a very strong package but other generations had unique appeal as well.

Probably gonna buy a “new used” 2020 Eclipse Cross LE-AWD-AWC that were bought wholesale from struggling Hertz, they are @ a local VW dealer & have just 5 miles or $22k , and another used 2018 that has 147 miles for 19k which has been sitting around for over a year @ local Mitsu dealer...

i saw that Mitsubishi on the highway today, the first thing i thought was "who would buy a Mitsubishi" the second was " they still sell cars in america?" i honestly can not remember the last time i seen a Mitsubishi dealer.
When they closed their plant in Normal, Illinois I lost all interest in their brand.

Our population where I live is 160,000 and we have a huge Mitsubishi dealership. They sell quite a few vehicles but still far less suvs then Toyota or Honda. For every Eclipse or Outlander I see there are at least 10 Rav4's & 8 CR-V's on the road. Mitsubishis just can't compete when it comes down to reliability, quality and resale value.

That side crease on the Mitsubishi really ruins the side profile. The front end looks great on it though.

Reliability! Plain and simple.
Toyota is NOT 'Bullet Proof' by any means...However it is way more bullet proof than a Mitsubishi.
My Toyota vehicles over the years have been RELIABLE.
Right now I have a RAV4 Hybrid Limited in my driveway. A loaner while my wife's 13 year old 2007 Camry XLE is getting some work done.
I did not deserve a loaner but the Service Director and I have become friends over the years and he knows I am looking to purchase a RAV4 soon.
So a 'loaner' is one of the best 'Test Drives' you can get. ;)
I agree the RAV4 should have the HUD option. I miss that.
However, this Limited with it's Weather Package (sadly NO Tech Package) is pretty darn good.
The 360 degree cameras are sweet as well and you have to purchase the higher trims to get it on the RAV4.
One other thing that people seem to miss when looking for vehicles is the actual Dealership that one purchases from.
Questioning their SERVICE overall. The front of the house is all well and good but the back of the house is what boils down to what is really important over the life of your vehicles.
THAT is what brings me back to the Toyota Dealership I have purchased my vehicles from over the years.
So Alex when speak about 'Value' I think of the Service I will receive (or not received) over time and the actual quality of the product being sold.
Mitsubishi does not give me that confidence at all. Please keep that in mind on future reviews.
Meaning...Over All Value and Reputation of the Manufacturer is very important. Not just price.

OldDood I am glad. Do you think all Toyota dealerships are good? I have had my 2016 Highlander in the dealership 3 times so far for a simple alignment and it is still not aligned correctly. So odd. Going back Thursday for a forth time. Am very sad. My 2008 RAV drives perfectly that I have serviced at a local garage. Am so confused.

The eCVT in the RAV is likely to be more durable than the conventional CVT in the Mitsu, for sure.
Justin Xu I may look at that Rav plug in hybrid RAV. That is a lot of HP. Would have to train myself to plug it in at night. Kind of lazy. Well - very lazy.

Word of mouth in your local area and all of that. No matter what dealership it is they are out to make money.
I am fortunate that the Toyota Dealership in my area makes an 'Honest Buck' for the most part.
It helps to be friendly toward people and treat them with respect if you want to get decent service.
I always ask for certain Technicians to work on my vehicles.
I do not mind the 'Rookies' if it is an oil change or something easy.
I would suggest if you have a problem to ask for the Service Director or at least the Service Manager and 'Talk it Out'.
If you assume that your average gas price will be $3/gallon and you can get the Mitsu for 5k less than the Rav4 hybrid, you'll need to do an awful lot of driving, probably near 200k miles, to break even with the increased fuel efficiency (and that's not including the present value of money, interest on financing the additional cost of the Rav, etc). It also doesn't take into account that hybrid battery may fail, which would require an expensive repair. The hybrid is probably the better option if you know you'll put 200k+ miles on it, otherwise it's not clear cut at all. If you live in a place with significantly higher gas prices, it becomes a more obviously better choice.
Refering to my previous comment - the opening height is also critical in this regard.

@Alex On Autos may be it will be more convenient to highlight difference (with color may be) when showing a list of options in comparison videos to see which options are available in one car but absent in another?
Resell is a huge negative for Mitsubishi. Here in Phoenix, you will most likely have to drive clear across the valley just to get to the only Mitsubishi dealership around.

I wanted to buy. But after I hear that no quick charger option (about 20min etc) in the electric charger station, I give up to buy Rav4 Plug in Hybrid. No body dont talk about that. But I think absent to quick charge option is biggest problem. Most of the people don't want to wait 2.5 hour in overseas countries and 5 hours in Japan. It is not best. Mitsubishi eclipse cross Phev has quick charger option and 10000 dolar cheaper than rav4 phev.

Of these 2 there's things I like about both. I'm in the hunt for a hybrid, so RAV 4 for me. The Toyota rides a bit better which my bad back requires in my next vehicle, so the rav4 may not be what I really get, that could actually be the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the new CR V Hybrid and Escape Hybrid are on my radar too. Both rav4 and Eclipse here do have proper amber turn signals on the rear, my preference.

I owned a red 1989 Mitsubishi Mirage stick shift. It was a great car. Fun to drive and very reliable. So I have a soft spot for Mitsubishi. But to answer Alex's question, if I had a $30,000 limit and it has to be a new car, I would probably get the Honda CR-V EX-L trim. Why? Quick with the turbo motor, handles decent, leather seats, 2 position memory driver seat, sunroof, handles in the cargo area to fold down the rear seats. nice 18 inch rims, dual exhaust, auto rear hatch, remote start. Checks all the boxes. I know about the oil dilution issue, I'm not concerned. I don't think most people experience the problem. I live in Florida. Every CR-V owner I have asked about it has had no problem. I would trade the car in 5 or 6 years anyway. The 2nd car I would probably go for at the $30k price point would be the Subaru Forester Sport with the Harman Kardon upgrade. Just an all around good SUV that's easy to see out of, gets great gas mileage similar to the CR-V. Has AWD which is a nice feature to have in the rain. Large sunroof with solid sunshade, not the rolling translucent type. Looks great with the black wheels and LED lights. The HK stereo is reportedly very good. I wish it had rear cargo buttons to fold down the rear seats, but have to get the Touring trim to get that feature in the Forester and that's $5K more. It's close, but the Honda checks all the boxes for less at only $30K. The Forester Sport has the better stereo option, but lacks the leather seating, driver memory seats, and the rear seat handles in the cargo area.

Mitsubishi is no where even in the same league as Toyota when it comes to making cars.
However, I do really like the look of the Eclipse, only thing that really bothers me is the lack of power and the steering wheel; it's kind of bland.
I know Toyota has had more recalls than Mitsubishi and is the only auto manufacturer to kill a family due to a faulty accelerator pedal. Mitsubishi is much better and is currently 3rd in owner satisfaction.

I would buy the Rav4 because Toyota has a better reputation for reliability. Also, there is resell value to think of and ease of getting parts for when they do need them.
