I wish some hacker would figure out how to load IRs in this. I'd go buy another one right now. It's still not easy peasy getting good sounds out of the newer units. Also I'm calling it now, this is the best built Line 6 device of all time, and they will never beat it
@@jonoftheford the issue with an external loader is the latency and analog/digital conversion that is introduced along with the POD’s inherent latency and AD/DA conversion.
if it helps, i found a way to use this multi fx pedal as a MIDI "controller". so basically, you can use your archetype nolly for example and turn some effects on and off using the pedal
I‘ve had this unit for 6 years or so and tbf once you get a feel for it you can do so much with it. I mostly do modern metal stuff with it but the clean and midgain tones work out so well too. Honestly being limited compared to more modern modellers helped me so much since it reduces option-paralysis, yet there are just enough options to tweak specific things if you want to. I haven’t done too many liveshows with it and mostly use it for recordings but based on how solidly build this thing is I have no doubts you could do a lifetime of touring with it. Oh and the price? Get yourself one, its an all purpose workhorse that pays you back the work you put into it. It is so satisfying once you got it figured out and honestly I don’t really see myself ever switching to anything else. Shoutout as well to the bass tones too, it’s criminally underrated for those
Good to see you still have this around John :). I have mine still, but, the display has some funky internal lcd movement on part of it. Still works great, just hard to see part of the display now.
@@JonEleyetGuitar hey John. I really need help. I am blind and I try to listen to the video but since I can’t see. I don’t understand some stuff. But what I’m going to ask you is probably something simple that you can just tell me how to do. I was listening to a video about making the guitar sound more like 70 rocks. And in one part of the video he mentioned that you can change more parameters ’s by double tapping the enter button. But let’s supposed that I am on the chorus affect and I want to change more parameters to make a slower or faster or stuff like that. Every time I double tap on the enter button. The first time I hit it it just takes out the Chorus a Effect. And if I press it again it puts it back in. And if I hold enter button . I think the window is to assign the foot switch page. So I still don’t understand about double tapping the enter button.. I believe the enter button is on the top of the 4 Directional cursor next to the screen on the right side. And below the cursor button is the move button. And on the left side. You have bottom side view button and middle is patches button and top is safe. Button. I cannot find any other buttons here. Other than foot switches microphone volume behind the unit 4 knobs under the screen for parameters . And three switches next to the footpedal. And big knobs for equalizer. And overdrive and volume and master volume. I don’t know what else I’m missing. Can you tell me exactly how to pull up the other scream for Moore parameters for a effect like if I want to make the Chorus Effect slower or faster? Because I don’t know how to do it. And it seems that none of the 4 knobs under the screen can not change that. Thank you so much. Hopefully I can hear from you.
I bought my hd500 4 years ago and I could never get the tones I was looking for until I stumbled upon your channel. You have helped me immensely. And now, I'm a happy subscriber. Please don't stop making content.
Yeah they take some tweaking. I often turn the cab completely off. The parametric eq is powerful. I always use an x3 or a hd500x for vocals. The preamp is amazing. I have 3 of these units for backup. You could literally buy like 8 for the price of a helix.
Can you also hook an E Drum machine to it and be able to Loop a drum track then add guitar or bass to the looper for a backing track to play along with ?
I've been using the 500x for about 4 years now and A) it's awesome to see a video about the unit that is current and relevant, while not focusing on how it isn't a Helix. B) Your videos have always been the most informative and helpful to me. I was excited to see that you just released a new 500x video. I keep wanting to want to "upgrade" to a new FX unit, but I can't justify the expense seeing as the 500x is still pretty rock solid.
Great Video, thanks Jon. I got a Line 6 POD HD500 the moment they came out and never turned back. I have 4 of these units (three 500 and one 500X) I use them on the FX Loop of my most important amps. For live on a Marshall DSL100HR or Marshall DSL40CR (500) For rehearsal on a Marshall DSL40CR atop of a Marshall 1966A 2X12 cab (500) At home on a Mesa Boogie Mark Five 1X12 Combo atop of a Mesa Boogie 2X12 vertical cab (500) At home on a Marshall JVM410H atop a Marshall2X12 cab loaded with one Celestion V-30 and one Celestion G12-K100 (500X) I don't use any of the preamp effects or amp modeling on any of the above setups. Just the necessary effects that belong on the FX Loop of a guitar amp. (I have 4 DigiTech RP360XP units that I use the same way on other setups). I've tried the 4C method on the POD HD500X, it's really useful. I love going back to the basics and just using the Line 6 POD HD500X with all it's features and no guitar amp. These videos are so helpful and reinforcing. I'm going to see about buying your patches. There's still a huge ton of patches on Line Customtone line6.com/customtone/?group=legacy#podhd
I mostly use plugins these days but my POD HD500X has always been a reliable quick plug-and-play option that's always available in the room. Don't see myself ever selling it even if I only use it once a month, it's just... useful
Really loved the worship tone that you built a while back. Still use it to this day would love to see another patch like that. I could not find it on your patch website.
You can find demos recorded using the POD HD Pro X rack unit from the POD HD series on my RUclips channel. In 2024, to continue using this series, all you need is an IR loader, either as software or hardware. If you can provide this, I don't even think you need a new generation device.
I have been playing the HD 500 and HD 500X for around 10 years, and I can certainly say the amp sim doesn't sound so good. There are a lot of harsh frequencies that are difficult to tame. Well done!
I have a PODHD500x that I've been trying to get working on Windows 11 and I have had the hardest time with it. I've even tried just plugging it into my focusrite and playing it through a DAW(studio1) and its showing that there's a connection... like the audio levels are changing in the channel but there's no audio coming through and nothing tracks when I record. Any advice would be great! thanks!
I wonder who still youses it for live gigs? Itnisnat the moment very cheap in used market. Even in compare with Pod Go. So maybe it is atill worth the hype?
Great video, Jon ! I feel that POD HD500X are still quite good, with the right tweaking. However, I'm still wondering if I could use the HD500X to send an emulated (IR-like) sound to the mixer through the balanced XLR outputs AND an unemulated sound through the unbalanced jack outputs. Have you ever done something like this ?
Jon I have a Pod HD500X a Peterson StroboStomp tuner and a Solo Dallas Replica. I want to run the tuner and Replica through the front of the amp and use the Pod as a pedalboard only to run effects like Analog Delay through the loop on my Mesa Dual Rectifier. Is this possible and if so how?
I rely heavily on DL patches. too complicated for me lol. I just wished the patches I get the volumes would be right I change from one patch to another and the volume is loud and can’t silence it with the foot pedal
Has anyone got any idea of the current draw of the 500 or 500X. I know the power pack is 9v@3A but I doubt that it's drawing that much. There's nothing listed in the pilot's guide or advanced manual - at least Roland give you all the specs on their stuff. Any clues anybody?
Good day jon, do you have any idea how to avoid it or what are the possible reasons why Hd500 leads to bootloop? Because I used to have an HD500 and it's sad to say that this happened to me. So I asked questions to those who have experienced this and some people say that "maybe it's because of the power supply I'm using, maybe it's not the original one". but the psu I actually use is the original HD500 psu. Many people gave me ideas on what to do to fix it and get it back to normal, I did all their solutions but none of them worked. Do you have any idea about this issue on HD500 or HD500x?
I used to watch your videos and recall you saying you had moved on from the 500x. If so, what did you move on to? No worries either way, I have a 500x and will still be using it for some time to come so these videos are very helpful, already bookmarked this one. Thanks!
That's a good question, lol. I don't exactly remember what I meant by that, but there was a time where I was able to buy and borrow a number of different pedals. I think I was just really restless at the time!
Anyone else's POD have the flanger effects absolutely botched? What should've been a smooth swirl starts doing a weird back and forth wobble just as the cycle is about to restart. It's vexed me for years.
Definitely, you can find them used from 1 to 200 USD. I personally run mine through a PA for live shows and with some tweaking I’ve gotten some solid tones. Jon does a great job at showing how to optimize the 500x.
Hi. I'm not able to use both left and right unbalanced outputs. the signal comes from either left or right. only left output works if i connect in both left and right(unbalanced). any setting that i need to change?? please help. thankyou.

So easy to use, too. And the display actually shows up in sunlight unlike the color displays on the newer units.
Still have mine and prefer it over all the newer gear.
Lots of expensive little IR loaders out there for under 100 bucks.
