Possibly the best tutorial on RUclips for the 500x. Just ordered mine today and I have no clue what I’m doing. Can I make it completely bypass any preset and just use my amp tone? Then use the footswitches 1-8 for stomp effects?
Nice job... Did you make any in-depth videos using alternate wiring configurations? Using FX on back of head unit, to use the amps tub, etc? My future is going to be headless and powered floor monitors and di to sound board. Too old to carry a full rig around!!! Thx again!
Great tutorial! I do most everything via the USB/Software, and most everything works for me, but sometimes though a preset shows Expression Pedal 2 set for Volume, and the pedal is set on 2, the pedal does not change the volume. Sometimes by turning off the pedal in the chain and adding another one solves the problem. I have an HD 500x.
I haven't tried it yet but seems possible two guitarist could plug into the effects returns and have a dual amp setup in the patch so each has their own sound and could be panned or centered to preference.
I would like to use my Mesa Boogie sound, and only use the 500X as a pedalboard. I seem to be having issues with no sound. Is there something I can do do only use my 500X as an effects board, no amp modeling?
Hey Jon ! I play direct trough my mixer, I'm not pleased with the livesound. Do you have any tips for me to make it sound better ? Great videos by the way !!!!
I’m about to pick up one of these 500x’s and I was wondering if it is possible to use a 1/4” out to a small amp on stage to use as a monitor while simultaneously sending a direct signal to the mixing board using another output like the xlr
yes, but i'd advise you to get frfr speaker because amp will color your sound and it's not gonna be the same you hear on your amp and what you are sending to PA.
Congratulations on the video. It looks great! I would like to share a problem I had this week, to see if anyone can give me a solution. When using the Wha, I noticed that the pedal no longer controlled it, although when pressing the foot hard, it works the function of switching between Exp1 and Exp2 correctly. I Tryed to carry out the calibration process, pressing the right key to access the menu, but the foot movement is not recognized in the calibration process. Either it stays at 255, or it stays at 0. I also tried doing the factory reset, turning on the pod by pressing the left arrow, but it doesn't seem to be working, as none of my presets were erased. Therefore, I still cannot control either the wha or the volume. If anyone can help, I appreciate it. Tks
Bass guitar patches. Effects loop end of chain mix 100, send assigned to foot switch for volume, return 0. I can still have stereo guitar patches XLR to board and bass 1/4 " out to board on separate send from effects loop send so bass patches won't mix into xlrs. Easier mixer volume control.
Good intro vid on the HD500x. I have been using mine for about 6 months and didn't know where to go to assign an effect to button, so thanks for that explanation! Quick question, I have been customizing my own effects on custom banks. Is there a way to copy a custom preset to another bank? Example, I have a custom sound on 1A but want to copy it and put it on 2A so I can continue to tweak it but don't lose my original sound? Hope that made sense... Thanks!
Great question. So, let's say you have your 1A preset pulled up. Press the SAVE button once. You'll see a new screen pop up. At the top of the screen you'll see the destination where the preset will be saved. You can use the number 1 knob to pick which setlist to save it to and you can use the number 2 knob to pick which bank in that setlist to save it to. You can also use the other knobs to rename the preset. But, if you want to just copy preset 1A to 2A, turn the number 2 knob until you see the save destination say 2A. Then hit save one more time to actually save it. Just keep in mind, that doing this will overwrite the original 2A preset. Did I explain that ok??
Is there any way you can use this thing as just a pedal board and bipass the amp modelers? I have a tube amp and would hate to have to use the amp modles instead of my amps true gain. Is there anyway I can just use the fxs?
Thanks for the information man. Im currently just own a pod Hd500x. unfortunately I was a Boss Gt user. I tought my hope is only GT1000. This problem is like changing brand of mobile phone from samsung to iPhone.
Superb information!! I wish something like this was available 5 years ago! Have you made a video about the software and using the Pod with a PC? I'll take a look through your stuff. Thanks for the great work!!
When I click distortion on and off to switch to clean, the volume changes quite a bit. Quieter on clean, gets louder when I click on distortion then back down again when clicked off. How can make them the same volume?
I just ordered this today. I’m so nervous. I’ve been a guitar player for over 25 years but I’ve never owned anything like this. I’m a little confused tho. I thought you were able to assign individual effects to all the “footswitches”? You’re only able to use 5-8 to do that? Or am I missing something? Can you have 8 individual effects set up and turn them off and on as you need them? Along with an amp/mic model going?
You have 2 modes:- pedal board mode and preset mode. Pedal board mode is when the 1 to 8 switches can turn on/off individual effects as you need them. Preset mode is when the 5 to 8 switches select the presets while switches 1 to 4 still maintains functionality to turn on/off only 4 individual effects (sort of a hybrid mode). To select which mode, view his explanation at 9:00
Hey, thanks for video, but I have question. I trying to rec my riff with looper, but when I press Play/Stop I don’t hear anything. Playing in headphones with stereo adapter from jack to mini jack
Hey Jon! Thank you for this videos about POD HD500x. I have one of this too to play in church. I used in pedalboard mode and have a question. How to balance clean tone and overdrive. I try with output which is options in overdrive but im not shure is this the correct way to balance the sound. If i turn volume button down the whole sound goes down... I hope you understand my question. Regards from Bulgaria!
Hey! So my overdrive sounds were always louder than the clean patches I made. One solution is to add a compression pedal to the clean and setting amp volumes high on the clean patch(NOT the master volume) and slightly lower volume on the overdrive patch. If you want the levels to match PERFECTLY, I recommend plugging your Guitar-Pod into any DAW (I use reaper) and the compare signal strength from the clean and overdrive channel and editing it so the levels are balanced. Cheers!
I recently bought a used line 6 DT 50 head . I wanted to get a helix but that’s gonna be down the road, I purchased a 500x on reverb in mint condition for 221 on reverb. My biggest thing is I want to use either and the L6Link to control my DT. I’m also planning on getting a second DT I’m interested in stereo ambient sounds. For now my second amp I’d a Bugera v55 2 channels no midi but yes fx loop. Is it better to use midi fir the DT I hear doing midi allows me to actually use the amps tube pre amp. Using L6Link I’m mainly going to have the models through power amp. Pretty confused yet. Wonder if you ever dealt with the L6Link. I do love the sound of the DT 50 amp. Any help appreciated.
Hey Jon. I'm planning on using my hd500x with my fender twin reverb amp. I would like to set up and program my hd500x with Headsets. How should I set up the pedal board so that I can use my Headsets while I'm programming it - then ultimately plan on using it with the amp when I perform. Trying to keep the noise level down at times in our home. Can I still program great sounds while using the Headsets?
Hello, thanks for the vidéo, it helped so much one several things. I' searching to solve a problem for several weeks, but i can't find any solution, here's the problem. First I'd like to come back to a proper FX seetings when I come back to a bank, I mean making a setup for a bank, add a FX when I play, and come back to a "original sound bank" when i come back. I 'd also like to make priority to a FX : if I put a delay with FS1 when on a bank, I'd like to make it canceled when I press FS2 to a distortion cause i don't want delay anymore. Is that possible ? Thanks ;)
I got some uncomfortable condition, when i used POD HD500x on dark or low light condition, the light from LCD for me to bright, and i can't see clearly other buttons. My questions is, can I setting the POD HD500x lcd bright?
Dude can I hook up the "send" (from the FX loop of the pedal) into my guitar amp (to avoid cabinet simulation) and then hook the XLR outs into an mixer in a live situation? I don't want to have a cabinet simulation going into my amp, but I do want it going to the mixer... Thanks!
@@urbanscott yes! But it limits your digital processing power so you may have to deal with less effects in your chain on that particular preset. This pedal allows you to use 2 amp simulations at the same time in parallel (in the LCD display it shows one on top of the other). So I used the same settings in both amps except that in one of them I've used a cabinet simulator (which will go out to the main output) and in the other one I removed the cab simulator (I've panned both amps to the center, so the one with cab simulation will come out through both left and right main outputs). And in the one I've removed the cab simulation, I've put the FX loop effect (that deals with the "send/return" of the pedal) just after this amp with no cab simulation (the FX loop has to be at 100% mix so that nothing goes to the main output and everything goes to the send output only), so that whatever comes into this send/return effect (FX loop) will be sent to the "send" output of the pedal and nothing will go to the main output. And then I hooked the send output of the pedal into my amplifier. Unfortunately in my experience the volume will be a little lower than using the actual main output. But it works! On my clean preset I didn't need to do that because I think that even with the cab simulation, the amplifier sounds okay. But when using distortion, it makes a huge difference not to have cab simulation going into the amp. Hope it helps
I just got this and I am having some trouble getting any sound form it using a line 6 spider iii. The only sound I am getting is from the amp itself. Is it compatible with the spider III?
I have been comparing a GT 100 with this one and I like the sound of this one more. While I would like to get the Helix the price on that is astronomical maybe sometime down the road. The layout of this the pod is really good I've been looking at the manual for the past week or so and they made it all as easy as they can and there's so many great features squeaking sound between the EQ and you can actually keep the frequency I'm very curious to see how it sounds for me and my style music I'm also going to use my own stop boxes before it and in the effects loop I have a Dirty Shirley Distortion and a sweet honey Deluxe that I do not want to stop using and in the effects Loop Iowa Matthew's effects astronomer V2 that sounds great in a TC flashback so I plan on putting this in the middle of those battles and really trying to use it and make some great stuff
hey everybody! would you help me out to decide about this one or a JOYO gembox 3, wich one would be better for recording?, it seems to me that the advantage of the 500x is just more buttons available for presets, for what I heard here in youtube, the distortions of the little JOYO sound better to my ears, but I need help looking for the real Pros and cons. help!! cheers and aweome video
I bought a hd500x and a line 6 fvb express foot switch ...the pod have a variax input ... Do you know how to connect the fvb to the pod? Does it need any configuration? And I also have a Force feedback gamer foot switch; the connector is similar but is smaller, do you know if exists a way to connect it? Is possible to mapping the gámer foot switch on PC but ...I want to control the PC with the fvb and then control the pod500x pitch using the gámer foot switch ...I want to have in my feed the same button as a midi controller keyboard pitch ... because when you use á pitch button on keyboard it returns to the same position but expresión guitar pedals never do that ...I also háve a sustain keyboard foot switch I don't know if is possible to connect all together.cán you comment?! And one more question jajajajsj.... can I tune my guitar using the pod 500x or is completely necessary to buy a drop tune pedal ? Rewards from spain sorry my English is basic 😜
Hey, I'm not too familiar with how to connect all that equipment together. But, you should be able to do everything with the POD that you can do with the FVB. Good luck.
Jon, thanks for the tips. Do have any experience with the POD HD500X not being seen over USB? MIne is invisible to all the Line 6 software, except Monkey, and even there it doesn't see it enough to update the unit. This problem means that I can't use the Edit software and that sucks.
Jon Eleyet, I’m using MacOS 10.14.6. I think that it is the POD HD edit that undoes the driver installation. I had success on one out of 5 computers that I tested on, by a complete removal and reinstall of the drivers after all of the other software.
@@AndrewAliferis Interesting. You should be good with OS 10.14. And it sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already. All I can recommend is to triple check that all downloaded software/drivers are compatible with your POD. So, make sure it's not the HD500 software if you need HD500x software. Also, try installing just the drivers and see if the computer is finding the 500x. (Download a free trial of a DAW if you need one.) Then, if the drivers work, then install the edit software. Also, try a diff USB cable and if all else fails, you could backup the 500x on the working computer and perform a factory reset.
Jon, for some reason on my presets none will let me use the volume or wah (pedal) Also when I go to different (presets) setting the volume is blasting out loud so I have to grab the volume knob and turn down immediately or my ears will be fried. I did buy this pedal used (but in mint shape) could it be something they did in programming that I am not seeing? thanks for your help Dave
Hey, David! My first thought is that you probably just need to add the volume and wah effects to the preset. If that's the case, then check out my video, Setting Up A Basic Pedalboard. I go into detail with adding effects. Let me know if that works for you.
Great link, is it just my ‘sound of plexi’ and other presets that’s really loud/hissy? Should I buy a noise gate pedal or something? Hiss drives me insane I purchased noise filter surge cables even plugged my solid state instead of tube amp. I’ve tried different cables, wall outlets, and guitars including emg humbuckers. To no avail. Any feedback/recommendations appreciated thank you.
Have you tried adding the noise gate effect to the beginning of your effect chain? The 500x has a noise gate effect built right in, so you shouldn't need to buy anything.
With the pod hd300, there is a setting called "usbmon" where I can lower the monitoring on the pod from 0 to 100. This will basically mute the pod hd. I cant find this on the 500x though, any ideas? Basically I want the ability to remove monitoring so I can use the 500x almost like a DI source for vsts like bias fx etc.
I don't know why my preset volume automatically decrease/increase and as soon as I save my preset star will pop up on the left top corner of my screen. And also how I am supposed to delete all my preset?
Here's my story. I bought a 500x around 5 years ago. I used it for a bunch of shows it's an awesome device. I've always liked line six and I currently use their 750watt bass amp. I'm going to say roughly two and a half years ago the switches started failing me and going from memory....some of them don't work at all and some of them will turn on and off by themselves. I plan on jumping in and learning which exact switches are a problem and what exactly it's doing or not doing. My first thought is it's broken switches.. is this a common thing in these switches? I thought they upgraded the switches where they worked better but switches fail especially when you stop hard on them in your metal band. probably a firmware reset needs to happen which I may do after hearing more about the buttons. Is there a place I can send my pedal board? Is this a common thing for the 500x? Thank you for responding.
Open clean switches with rubbing alcohol then tap upside-down clean drips out while tapping make sure springs are stretched a little longer tight in the button head 😮❤
Bro, I'm planning to buy this pedal, would you suggest this for live performances and studio sessions? What other pedalboards are as good as or better than this one in the same price range?
I would absolutely recommend this pedal. Not sure if you've made your purchase yet, but you could also check out the Boss GT-100. That seems to be the biggest alternative. I've played a GT-100 a few times and it rocked.
In my opinion it's great to use in live settings, you get amazing tones from it. It's quite good in the studio but then again it doesn't come close to Kemper/Axe FX. You can still use it for studio/live and if you dial your patches right, no one in the audience will find any reason to complain about your tone.

can you please set some dark synth preset with pitch change on Line6 Pod HD500X
Great tutorial! I do most everything via the USB/Software, and most everything works for me, but sometimes though a preset shows Expression Pedal 2 set for Volume, and the pedal is set on 2, the pedal does not change the volume. Sometimes by turning off the pedal in the chain and adding another one solves the problem. I have an HD 500x.
I haven't tried it yet but seems possible two guitarist could plug into the effects returns and have a dual amp setup in the patch so each has their own sound and could be panned or centered to preference.
Do you have to have an amp? Or can you plug straight into the PA?
EXCELLENT video and very helpful
Excellent - that was a very helpful overview for me - thanks very much
I would like to use my Mesa Boogie sound, and only use the 500X as a pedalboard.
@@denisx36 frfr speaker? I’ve never heard of that one… guess I’ll need to do some research…thanks for the tip! 👍🏻👋🏻
Tks
Very informative and helpful!!
Super smart👍 I gotta try that out, thanks!
That would be expression pedal for send level for volume control not a switch.
Yup! You can turn the amp block off and just use the effects.
Thanks for the information man. Im currently just own a pod Hd500x. unfortunately I was a Boss Gt user. I tought my hope is only GT1000. This problem is like changing brand of mobile phone from samsung to iPhone.
Nice analogy! Did you like the GT1000??
Nice instructions just picked one up subscribed.
Superb information!! I wish something like this was available 5 years ago! Have you made a video about the software and using the Pod with a PC? I'll take a look through your stuff. Thanks for the great work!!
Very helpful! Thumbs up!
you're a hero
When I click distortion on and off to switch to clean, the volume changes quite a bit. Quieter on clean, gets louder when I click on distortion then back down again when clicked off. How can make them the same volume?
Good video man 🤙 tks
Really nice video !! Thanx !
Nice Video broo!! Thankss!!
You look like Brandon boyd from incubus. Great video. helped a lot.
Cheers!
sangat membantu!, terima kasih 🙏🏻
Can youbsplit the sigmal to go into a amp and front of house ? And by0ass the cab on the amp setting
Can you telll me more about programming variax from within the podhd500?
I have mine set as abcd. Is it possible to change from abcd without cutting sound and rather make it fade out
your kickass thanks for the great video, just subbed btw ;>]
Thanks ;)
finally got this ... thanks
I got some uncomfortable condition, when i used POD HD500x on dark or low light condition, the light from LCD for me to bright, and i can't see clearly other buttons. My questions is, can I setting the POD HD500x lcd bright?
Is the signal chain left to right or right to left like an actual pedal chain? Lemme know pls
How to change To a new patch , using Pedal Board Mode ?
For example :How to go to 1A to 2B in pedal board Usage ?
Press and hold on view button to get the setup 1/12 and change the FS MODE to ABCD
Dude can I hook up the "send" (from the FX loop of the pedal) into my guitar amp (to avoid cabinet simulation) and then hook the XLR outs into an mixer in a live situation? I don't want to have a cabinet simulation going into my amp, but I do want it going to the mixer... Thanks!
I’d like to do the same… did you ever figure out how to do this?
Hi Jon,
Is the Pod Hd 500x still a worthy buy according to you in 2022? Thanks
Only if you can get a good deal, either used or preferably new. There are many newer multi-efx these days, from lesser known brands too.
Can I use the xlr outputs in a live situation going straight the mixer, and use the 1/4 inch to the amp at the same time just to have stage volume?
you can make a video on how to build the presets from scratch
How do you connect the HD500X to a Focusrite Audio Interface? There’s only outputs on the HD500X and outputs on the Focusrite.
Thank you
500X can do many things. Even a voice box like
Peter Frampton. Wait till you hear about 4 cable method.
hey everybody! would you help me out to decide about this one or a JOYO gembox 3, wich one would be better for recording?, it seems to me that the advantage of the 500x is just more buttons available for presets, for what I heard here in youtube, the distortions of the little JOYO sound better to my ears, but I need help looking for the real Pros and cons.
help!!
cheers and aweome video
Good luck.
Yes ! you can connect the pod fvb with MIDI cable to line 6 pod 500X and you can setting up this in the setup of 500x MIDI section !
Jon, thanks for the tips. Do have any experience with the POD HD500X not being seen over USB? MIne is invisible to all the Line 6 software, except Monkey, and even there it doesn't see it enough to update the unit. This problem means that I can't use the Edit software and that sucks.
What operating system are you using?
Jon,
for some reason on my presets none will let me use the volume or wah (pedal) Also when I go to different (presets) setting the volume is blasting out loud so I have to grab the volume knob and turn down immediately or my ears will be fried.
How do i know the signal chain goes left to right or right to left?
Hi sir .. i need your help, im using hd500x and i want to know how to set autowah+distortion on hd500x. Tqs sir hope u reply on this . 😊
I’m having trouble assigning and using the foot switch pedal. Can you go a bit more into depth on the foot switch.
i have one, i can help
Josip Crneković I have a question when I plug the condenser mic is there any settings for phantom power
What's the name of the inear you are using
hi. does this model able to tune guitar ?
@@JonEleyetGuitar Got myself a Zoom G5n instead, saw reviews, it has great tones and customizability too. What's your take on it?
New subscriber 👍
How to mix dual tone? How to mix and how to get 3rd note or 6th note?
how to change preset patch from one bank to another?....nice video
I have issues on my expression pedal, when I calibrate it doesn’t move to 0-100, It’s always 100. And the scaled pedal value is 34-255.
try to do global settings reset, then re calibrate your expression pedal
How do i do a factory reset to get original presets loaded back into and erase all of my custom presets?
