    The "in network" option is great that it includes Enterprise Rent-a-Car. Unlike other car rental companies, Enterprise built its business model around insurance accident replacement. As a result, many neighborhoods have an Enterprise office. I'd say that the Tesla Insurance is worth it right there.
    It's also good that Tesla is offering insurance because legacy insurance carriers don't understand EVs, so their prices and coverages aren't helpful. Their policies also cost a lot. My brother had considered a Model X for him and his family, but he opted for an ICEV instead. One reason he gave me was that insurance on the Tesla Model X would've been three times more expensive.

  • @johnchigur7706
    @johnchigur7706 4 года назад +13

    Hi Joy. I own an insurance agency in NJ. In seeing your policy you should look into your “uninsured motorist property damage coverage” and it being only $3500. That would cover the repairs or replacement of your Tesla should you get into an accident with someone who is at fault but doesn’t have insurance. I don’t know if $3500 is the max that Tesla offers or it is the max on California insurance policies but if you can increase that you should. It shouldn’t cost much and unfortunately there are too many people who drive without insurance. In NJ I carry $100k for that and it’s only $30 more a year than if I had the state minimum of $5k.
    And one more suggestion -
    Lower your “other than collision” deductible to $100 - you’ll notice collision w/ $500 deductible is costing $615 a year and other than collision is only $129 a year. Lowering other than collision to $100 should not increase your premium by much. The reason to do that is because glass damage is covered under “other than collision”. And we know how expensive the windshields on Tesla’s are along with all the glass roof, etc. As it is now you would need to pay the $500 before insurance pays for replacement of any glass. So may want to see what lowering to $100 deductible would cost.. I’m guessing it would be another $50 a year at most.
    Anyways, you prob know all this already but just thought I’d make sure. And please keep up the great videos!

    • @TeslaJoy
      @TeslaJoy  4 года назад +1

      Thanks. That $3500 is the only option available. Previously with GEICO and Clearcover they didn’t even have that option whatsoever so Tesla Insurance is a step up from those.

    • @travisli-rufus1949

      So there is still people driving without insurance? Then why do we have to buy insurance?

    • @johnchigur7706
      @johnchigur7706 4 года назад +1

      Travis Li - Rufus unless they are self insured then they’re driving illegally by being uninsured. Here in NJ you have to carry Liabilty coverage to register a car for road use. If your insurance cancels, then the NJ DMV is notified by the insurance carrier and the registered owner of the car will get their license and registration suspended unless they can show proof of an active insurance policy on the vehicle. As an agent, believe me, I still see my fair share of clients involved in accidents with people driving illegally uninsured, as well as people asking to purchase insurance for vehicles they’ve owned but we’re driving uninsured and are trying to avoid license and registration suspensions. Most likely these people are repeat offenders and I’ll usually give them one chance to purchase and maintain their policy.. after one cancel and they call again, I tell them to call Geico.

    • @johnchigur7706
      @johnchigur7706 4 года назад +1

      Daniel Brice unfortunately it is the reality of driving your car on the public roads today. You may do what is legally required to do so but many don’t. This is why you need to make sure your own insurance protects you from damages caused by uninsured drivers. Insured drivers that are not at fault are more and more often involved with a driver that is at fault but is uninsured... and if you don’t have the proper coverage on your policy to cover that type of loss .. well then your s.o.l

    Joy, your video is informative from a consumer point of view. You have done good research. My first comment is that your coverage limits are low for liability and property damage. I have noticed that many people that used companies like Geico and Progressive have lower limits. In many cases people go with the cheaper premium which is lower coverage. This happens a lot when buying online and they don’t understand insurance. In my opinion these companies like it this way because it minimizes claim payout. They spend the savings on advertising to get more clients. If you never have a claim this is fine. But one serious claim and someone can take your house and 401k. Once again, nice job on your video. I plan to check out your other videos.

    Years ago I responded to an offer to get a quote from Geico; it was supposed to be a favorable rate for engineers. After spending a lot of time answering all their questions they would not provide a quote because nearly 5 years prior I had a no-fault accident. A few months later I went through the quote process again but did not mention the accident. Their rate was extremely higher than what I already had. I've used State Farm and AllState, but they have played games where they refuse to pay valid claims. I was with NationWide for a good while; they were low cost but eventually those rates creeped up. Finally I switched to Progressive and that has worked well with lower rates; I have not had any claims, and since my vehicles were quite old I just carried liability insurance. When I switched to a Tesla Model 3 this spring, the Progressive insurance only went up about $20-30 per six months, and that was because I added comprehensive insurance with the highest deductible, just in case of catastrophic loss. My current renewal rate is $247 for six months.

    Congrats on the purchase of your new Tesla Model 3! I can sympathize with you having to call around to ensure you are getting the best rate for your auto insurance. Any consumer, including myself should periodically check rates with other insurance carriers to make sure you are getting a competitive premium. But, I want to clarify a few points you made regarding your previous insurance carrier GEICO and your new insurance with Tesla.
    1) You stated you were "forced to purchase an optional coverage" with GEICO. It sounds like the coverage you're speaking of is MBI (Mechanical Breakdown Insurance) and it is OPTIONAL. Sounds like a hard sell by the agent quoting you and all auto insurance companies offer the same coverage but just call it a different name. Just say NO thanks next time. Tesla has a great warranty.
    2) Your premium increased "for no good reason" which unfortunately will happen when you add a new vehicle to your policy. Tesla or not, your premium for adding a newer vehicle that is replacing an older one on your policy will change your rate.
    3) Tesla Insurance Services is really just that. Just a SERVICE. In reality, your actual insurance company is State National Companies. They are benefiting by using Tesla's brand name to increase policy holders and Tesla is not responsible for your claim or servicing your policy with State National Companies. Win-Win for them. How good they really are will come down to their service and claims handling.
    Not sure saving a couple bucks in the long run will be worth the hassle when your insurance company disappoints you. I happens to all of us unfortunately.
    Let us know how it goes after your next renewal!

    When I got my Model 3 last September, your videos helped me a lot in making the decision to continue my purchase (I was going back and forth between the Model 3 and Lexus). So when I took delivery of my red Model 3, I switched from one of the big insurance companies (Farmers) to Tesla insurance which was like night and day. Farmers cost me $2750 a year ($229/mo) and Tesla cost ($126/mo) and had much higher coverage than farmers. Watching your video helped make the switch. Thank you!
    On another note, there aren't very many channels out there with women Tesla owners who actually educate and provide information that are very practical. Your channel is nice and simple, focusing on the information rather than graphic noise, and you speak slowly so that helps people like me (and I'm sure other others especially those whose first language is not English) understand the sequence of thought and thoroughly understand all the info provided. I have Mercury Insurance. Live in California. I had a Mercedes E350 for which the insurance was $541 for 6 months. When i bought my Tesla Mercury increased my premium to $926/month. That is a 71% increase which seems absurd to me. I checked with Geico and the quote was even higher. So i am not sure where you all are getting these quotes that are lower. I went onto the Tesla site and was quoted for equivalent coverage $101.39/month or $608.34 for 6 months. Mercury has given me great service over the years, but i have to say that the struggle to get a decent quote from them with the Tesla which has gone around 3 rounds now is puzzling and the result is still way high in my view. I live in South Orange County, CA which i would think the rates would be less than LA.

    I hope Tesla Insurance comes to Canada. One thing I want to check you on though. You mentioned the safety features and design as reasons for your premium to be lower. Insurance premiums in Canada is determined by ratings such as driving record, insurance history, commuting and territory. The vehicle rating is based on replacement costs and labour. Tesla’s are still very expensive to repair because of sensors/electronics and I believe their bodywork is aluminum? Very costly Joy, so even though the incident rating should be much lower because of the safety and autopilot, it will take time for that price to come down.
    Remember, tens of millions of ICE models are being rated with decades of history but Tesla still has less than a million vehicles on the road worldwide. It will take time but the premiums should eventually come down as more and more Teslas are on the road.

    I was in a car accident last year. I filed a claim with Tesla insurance and showed them pictures and proof it was not my fault.
    The person that hit my car had Geico insurance. And she denied hitting into my car.
    And Geico had her side of course.
    So I told Tesla insurance that it was not my fault and she had to pay for the damages.
    This was Tesla’s insurance words ... “ I can not force her to say yes and fix the damages”.
    I called Tesla insurance later on telling them about the problem. They said they would transfer me and then just hung up.
    You don’t know how good an insurance is until you been in an accident and realize they’re not there for you. 😢

    I got my Model 3 just 2 months ago, and added it to my current policy with Ameriprise. The 6-month premium of my Tesla Model 3 is $265.85.
    Recently I heard about Tesla Insurance. I checked it out today (8/24/2020) and tried to have its coverage as similar to my Ameriprise coverage as possible. Tesla quote was $108.36. Too good to be true, right?
    It is! What caused me to suspect is the wording of Tesla quote. Instead of the regular "Your premium is $108.36", their wording is something like this: "Your monthly rate for 6 months is $108.36". To clarify this, I called Tesla Insurance. While waiting for a Tesla agent, I looked at the top of the quote, and noticed that the above rate of $108.36 was also there, and next to it, there was a small “I" (information.) When I clicked on it, it displays this message: "The total premium for 6 month policy is $650.17."
    How could you say Tesla Insurance is great?! Am I missing something?

    I have been able to get a score of 100 several times. However, if I drive during rush hour like a normal human, it’s really hard to get a 100, partly because the distance between my car and the one in front needs to be unreasonably large for rush hour traffic. My latest gripe is that the collision avoidance distance requirement is overly sensitive. On a recent drive I was marked down for two collision avoidance alarms. In both cases I took my foot off the accelerator and the car easily stopped itself leaving about twenty feet between me and the car in front which was stopped at a red light. Come on Tesla. If you want me to maintain a greater gap, give me an early (gentle) warning ahead of time before I get too close to the car in front. How about a chime like the green light one instead of the blaring ah! ah !ah! you now have when it’s almost too late to stop?

    Your battery and mechanicals are not covered by warranty if damaged in an accident. Because of the extremely high cost of replacement when damaged, Geico simply added a rider to take care of those items in case of an accident. Also, insurance rates are based on the rate of loss claims, not how safe the car is intrinsically. For Teslas, even minor accidents cost a fortune to repair (and they take forever to get parts--causing huge rental car costs) so the insurance company rates simply reflect that. For example, you would think that a Corvette convertible should have sky high insurance rates. That's not true at all. Corvettes have much lower rates than Teslas. Why? Because the average age of a Corvette buyer is about 55 years old and the buyers are usually professionals with families, that is, the safest profile of drivers. Teslas, on the other hand, are the most expensive cars to insure. That's why they're trying to have their own insurance company. Of course, Tesla will have raise rates sky high eventually or go out of business.

    • @TeslaJoy
      @TeslaJoy  4 года назад

      Hi Sarabeth, my car is currently in the body shop being repaired. The estimate isn’t that much more from my old BMW and all the parts where ordered and delivered within one week, so not sure what you’re basing on Tesla being expensive to repair and parts are hard to get-that’s not my experience whatsoever. Moreover, I know people who have gotten into serious accidents and their batteries were replaced by insurance without paying any special premium. All these are bogus excuses for insurance companies to raise premium on consumers without merit, and exactly what Tesla decided to start their own insurance service.

      The safety of your car is irrelevant in a liability situation. If you were to negligently hit someone else and cause bodily injury or property damage, that's where your limits come into play. $50,000 property damage liability is nothing these days. One of my biggest savings is a group rate discount from my employer - a large multinational company. My advice is to always look for and ask about any group discount rates you may be entitled to. Even with your existing insurance, have them review your policy periodically and even have them re-run your credit score if it has improved...this lowers premiums too!

      Yes! I got mine last week. I called Tesla Insurance before I got this notice after others told me about this notice. DMV hasn’t included Tesla on their list yet. If you do a search of electronic notification insurance carriers to DMV, they are not on it as it’s a new insurance brand. However, DMV has a special process set up with Tesla Insurance for those who received this notice. All you have to do is call Tesla Insurance and email them a photo of this notice. They will take care of it for you rather than having you deal with DMV. I did both actually just to be safe. I emailed DMV my proof of insurance AND Tesla Insurance is handling it for me too.

Then the electrician said that another condo he did the HOA required the purchaser to buy a insurance umbrella policy of $1M for an additional annual cost to the unit owner of $1200 peer year. WOW!! I called Tesla auto insurance to see if their policy would mitigate that coverage, but their policy only covers Bodily injury of $100K/$200K and property damage of $50K. So cant understand why the Great State of California would impose such a large vehicle insurance “umbrella” policy, especially since they are encouraging EV purchases. This seems odd given that ICE vehicles, in my opinion are much more prone to catastrophe.

I was rear-ended on Monday, reported it to Tesla immediately (within 30-minutes) and it is now Thursday and I have not heard from the Tesla Claims Adjuster. So, we need to be careful about hyping up this insurance because what really matters is the service you get once you need it. It doesn't matter how cheap it is, or how much coverage they give you, etc, etc if they leave you hanging when you need them! Insurance coverage is a great topic. With the Tesla insurance (or for any insurance) it will be interesting to track what happens when making a claim and whether or not the insurance rate increases? And watch renewals … one year an insurance company doubled my car insurance rate for no reason. I think this insurance company thought I wouldn't notice the rate increase (because I'm old, maybe senile?); so I had to find another insurance provider with a reasonable rate. Fortunately, my two cars are old with not much value and insurance costs are minimal to cover California basic requirements. But that might change with a Tesla someday . When the mortgage payments for the house ended I stopped the insurance. Statistically, the chances for ever making a claim are very small. In thirty years of home ownership, never made a home insurance claim. Insurance expenses for those thirty years was about $30K. So I've been self-insured for the past five years, saving about a grand per year. Spend most of my time at home so I can watch things (fires or whatever).

    I would have went with Ameriprise.
    I would sit back and see how Tesla insurance works out over the next 8 to 12 months. There is almost nothing worse than not being able to get in touch with your agent when you have a problem. No app in 2019?
    Geico has some policies that I do not like. Charging a massive premium in largely African American neighborhoods, No longer covering cars after 9-11 that have any future damage caused by a terrorist action in Washington D.C. and New York City.
    Geico , Is still by far the best insurance company I have used. Fixing my cars instantly and correctly ( for the most part). Any problem you may have with your car you can get assistance 24/7. You can talk to a human or text if you like. Geico covers new Tesla cars bumper to bumper for 100,000 miles if you have any mechanical problem all you need to pay is an $100 deductible ( for a very small premium). Geico pays the rest. My sister had an Mazda MPV and a Dodge Caravan both had thousands of dollars of out of warranty work done all paid for by Geico. For those of us that keep are cars for 10 to 15 years that coverage pays for itself the first time you have a problem out of warranty.
    Still not worth the premium you were paying. In two years you could put away over 2 grand in savings. I wish you the best. Let us know how Tesla insurance is improving. Thank you for sharing.

    What do you think of the Safety Score (Beta)? I have been using it to get the Beta release of FSD and I think it is terrible, even though my average score is 99.2. Where I live, you cannot get on the freeway without getting dinged for Unsafe Following (it claims the fleet median for Unsafe Following is 16% - I am at 4.7%). Also, it appears to me that if you happen to get caught by a quick changing or unexpected light (like one triggered by a pedestrian) your "safest" option is to run it as even touching the brake (not even very hard) will get you dinged for Hard Braking (the fleet median for Hard Braking is about 2% - I am at 0.2%). There is no way I would let this thing determine my insurance rates.

    Doesn't look like your coverage and liabilities are enough. It's not just the premiums you pay, it also depends on the coverage and deductibles.

      I’ve had the same coverage/liability/deductible for all of my ICE cars over the last 20 years. My Tesla should be even less because it’s the safest car on the road to avoid accidents.

      @@TeslaJoy The Tesla might be the safest car, but you need more coverage if for some reason you damage the other person property. In my opinion 50k is not enough. These days damages can get well over 50K. Image if your at fault for totaling a Model S, or a Range Rover etc. I'm in silicon valley and there are tons of Tesla's and $$$ cars.

      I cannot imagine a scenario of such huge damage frequently occurring with all the sensors Tesla has.

    Hello Tesla Joy : I have a question on Tesla car insurance.How is the monthly payment handled? or yearly? I tried calling the customer rep for car insurance and I have not signed on too the Tesla insurance policy yet. What if any issues have you had with the front bumper repair with Tesla insurance or was it with a different insurance company? Thanks for the help on this and keep up the great job your doing on the web

      Hi Paul, Tesla insurance is like every other insurance out there. They charge you monthly for 6-month policy.

    Hey Tesla joy! it's a fantastic video that i watch every second with pleausure.. I'd like to ask you that you know of course Tesla may face with some difficulties in this adaptation process. What would be the obstacles and concerns that you think Tesla may face within this process? about Claim management, competitors or customers.. Could you please give some examples?

      Hi Omer, that’s a great question and I think the biggest obstacle will be when Robotaxi and FSD come online - who will be liable for an accident? The adaptation process I’m not worried about because State National is already an established insurance provider. The only issue may be how fully integrated is Tesla Insurance with State National service.
