  • Edmunds gets a First Drive of the all-new 2018 Lexus LS 500.
Take a spin in the all-new 2018 Lexus LS 500 with Edmunds Senior Writer Mark Takahashi to see if this fifth-generation evolution lives up to expectations. The previous LS was praiseworthy for its comfort and craftsmanship but was knocked for its dull driving feel and slow acceleration. The new LS maintains the best parts of its predecessor and overcomes its drawbacks with engaging driving dynamics and an appropriate amount of power for a car this size.
The old V8 has been replaced by a 416-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that is both more powerful and more efficient. It's paired with a 10-speed automatic to make the most of all available power and the differences are telling. The new LS 500 can now mount a challenge against the German sedans that are renowned for driver engagement without affecting comfort. There's also the LS 500h hybrid model that goes without the turbos but adds two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack for a combined output of 354 hp. It's estimated to achieve 28 mpg combined, 4 mpg better than the LS 500. Mark says the LS 500h is the way to go since the difference in power is negligible and both models have impressive handling. He even hints that it can actually be fun to drive.
As expected, the interior is impeccable and all-around comfort is commendable. Taller drivers and passengers might notice a lack of headroom, however, so we recommend spending a decent amount of time inside if you test-drive one. The biggest complaint is unfortunately one that Lexus has not addressed with the redesign: the infotainment controller. As Mark put it, "It's probably one of the worst systems, quite honestly." For technophiles, it could very well be a deal-breaker.
Otherwise, the redesigned 2018 Lexus LS is a significant step forward and there's a lot to like about it.
Q: When will it go on sale?
    A: Sometime around February 2018.
    Q: How fast is it?
A: The LS 500 is estimated to reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds (1.5 seconds quicker than the previous LS 460). The hybrid LS 500h should reach 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: Pricing hasn't been officially announced yet, but it should start right around $75,000 for the base LS 500. That's just a few thousand more than the 2017 model.
Q: What kind of options are offered?
A: There are all the typical safety and convenience options available, along with an executive rear seat add-on that gives the right-rear passenger accommodations that rival what the front seats offer.
Q: What are its main competitors?
A: The less pricey Genesis G90 and Lincoln Continental are strong rivals with the new Lexus LS. Of course the more expensive German sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 can also be considered.

Karun Chendrimada I agree with you that this Lexus isnt anywhere near the top of the class, but in fairness the perceived superiority in reliability comes from Lexus' history of making near bulletproof cars. So I wouldnt challenge the reliability claim. They have that locked.....based on history.

Well styling is subjective then. Because for me, Lexus has delivered on styling since the very beginning of the brand and still stands true for me today. Great styling and extremely reliable (relatively speaking compared to other brands), low maintenance. Comfortable, great performance. Only small downside that Lexus cars for me, some of them don't handle as fun in corners as some competitors (Acura/Honda/BMW).

The LEXUS TEAM takes true pride in making their vehicles, especially the LS model, the very model that shook the luxury world car market back in 1989.
They LEXUS TEAM members do not drag their feet into their top notch facilities every morning, let alone being inefficient while working in them, and they have an unparalleled attention to detail, the trait which usually linked to loving your job. In order to have the privilege to work on LS model, every worker must pass various tests. They're then assigned to MASTER technicians, who are the best of the best in what they do.
Facilities have the most stringent rules and requirements for assembling vehicles. You could easily walk around in white socks without worrying about making them dirty. The Tahara plant, where LS model is assembled, is a one of a kind, state of the art facility, with such meticulous and diligent conditions, rules and requirements, that no other world assembly facility comes even close.

A pinnacle of craftsmanship and artisanship, which can't be matched by any other luxury brand manufacturer.
Here, my beloved LEXUS TEAM accomplishes something that is extremely hard to pull off, which is to make a model with an attractive design, solid handling and fun to drive and, at the same time, while try to preserve all the elements that, at the end of the day, matter to a great majority of car buyers, such as reliability, dependability, comfort, resale value, as well as the smallest depreciation possible, which have all been the trademark elements of LEXUS, and out of reach for any other luxury brand.
That being said, you haven't seen nothing yet. The LEXUS TEAM has much more excitement to come in the coming years. Just watch.

No one has hated that damn spindle grill more than me, but I have to admit to me this new LS is the only Lexus ever that this grill looks good on. Honestly, I love this LS. Its beautifully bold and well thought out design and excellent twin turbo V6 make it more than competitive with the Germans, maybe even preferable, from a price and reliability perspective. Nevermind the overweight, unresponsive hybrid trim, I'd go for the F Sport trim with RWD.

What an underwhelming review, I fell asleep.
Lexus has done a great job with this LS, excellent car, fit and finish on par, if not better, than S-class and certainly BMW 7 series.
It is quite a step to offer only a 6 cilinder engine however, but an excellent one it is.
The car looks far better then the dull 7 series and A8.

1970HondaCL100 very boring initial impressions. He's not detailed, it seems from the beginning he was just looking for things negative to say like he's a German fan instead. This new Ls has the best interior in its class bar none right now. He didn't even talk about the glass options available and all the various interior colours and two tone configurations available. The seats are the most comfortable and have the highest adjustability compared to all the Germans and he said the rear seat controls that are touch to be the same as the front? He just wanted to say negative things, he's a terrible biased car journalist.

Samson Okoro bar none? Have you not seen the new Panamera, A8, and 7 series? The LS interior was striking to me when I first saw it cause it's so different, but now it just seems cluttered and overstyled. And that all black interior does it no favors.

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 6 лет назад

It has various colour interior options, there's two tone colour combo available plus a mix of several other normal colours. Search online u'll find others and when it's released there will be more options available including white. This has the best interior in its class in my opinion and that is cars that cost between 100-140k.

Just the other day, I extensively test drove this vehicle and was extremely impressed by it, *EXCEPT THE MARK LEVINSON SOUND SYSTEM, which is the WORST I have ever heard, especially for older music. It is HORRENDOUS with badly balanced sound, overwhelming and inaccurate mid range, and horrid, resonant, tinny bass*
By comparison, the Nakamichi system in my 2000 LS 400, blows this system out of the water. This sound system is not even as good as the 4-speaker system in my cousin's Toyota Corolla!!! It is _THAT_ bad! Also the JBL sound systems, I listened to, in the new 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited and the 2018 Camry, are simply FANTASTIC!! (tested my music on them).
The vehicle itself is EXTREMELY QUIET with literally no ENGINE AND EXHAUST noise below 3000 RPM in *COMFORT* mode. (a *huge* improvement over the LS 460!!!, and back to the DEAD-SILENT, LIBRARY-QUIET days of the LS 400 and LS 430)!! And, in the same comfort mode, it maintains the neck-snapping engine responsiveness and acceleration too, which is an added bonus!! Ride comfort with the air suspension was pretty good too with the *19 inch wheels* - The 20-inch wheels may not be as comfortable!
Sadly, the sound system may be a deal breaker, unless a way can be found to change it out, without destroying the vehicle's ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL system, which makes it so silent.

I've had an LS for almost 20 years. Both the exterior styling and some of the interior designs are literally offensive to the eye...at least to my eye. Engine noise is not something to be celebrated. It's intrusive and I don't buy cars of this type to hear machinery work. I think Lexus may have lost its way. Perhaps they are trying to attract more juvenile money.

I agree, wholeNwon. We're long-time LS owners, too. But this GHETTO SNEAKER of a joke car will NOT be getting a bay in our garage. It looks like something marketed to the buyers of Air Jordans, and the new TV commercial seems to bear that out. Cadillac was really an excellent car, but became untouchable, because of its reputation for being the car choice of undesirables. Lexus seems to be heading in the same direction. I don't want to drive a Mercedes. But the new LS SLEAZEMOBILE is basically forcing us to consider Mercedes.

@@megaswenson Absolutely NOTHING will "force" me back to any German vehicle. Today I drove my '98 LS400 to lunch with friends. It is elegantly styled both inside and out. It does not look like some child's transformer toy, if that's what they are called. As usual, it was silent, smooth, comfortable and entirely capable on the highway. Perhaps some day Lexus will make a vehicle that will tempt me away from my old LS, but not yet.

Good reviewer. But is the car so low to the ground, it will be impractical to drive in the real world? And what about SAFETY? Frankly, we were in the dealership recently, and didn't even realize this was the LS. It looks like that sleazy "sporty" thing they've been making for a few years - 'GS"? And that's the thing: IT LOOKS SLEAZY. We drive LS, and have done so for a decade. So, we ARE "the market". Last night, I saw the LS new commercial on TV. It was really sleazy and insulting - obviously aimed at a very low-IQ group. Even low-IQ people would perceive that the car is now made for low-IQ people. We really don't want to move to Mercedes, but Lexus is getting so GHETTO, we may be forced to switch marques.

This car is pretty underwhelming. Saw at the auto show this past weekend and it really had no presence about it. The exterior looked so.."normal", like any other Japanese car priced lower (except the front-end which looks pretty decent). The interior looks pretty cluttered, unlike the very clean presentations of the S-Class and new A8. All the swoops and dimensions and textures in the interior just makes it look like Lexus is trying way too hard. The instrument cluster looks crowded and the Shrek-ear controls stalks look awful. Quality seems okay, but not nearly as solid as the Benzes and Bimmers to be honest. Actually, I felt the same with the LC500 - when I shut the door twice on that car, both times, the door rattled a bit. And the interior of the LC was very underwhelming, making me very skeptical of all of the journalists who have drooled over it. To me, this new LS just doesn't have a sense of grandeur that a large flagship Tier1 luxury car should have. And, yes, this guy needs a few shots of espresso before he makes another video. (accidentally deleted my first comment, so re-posted so the little children can make their same childish comments).

i mean clearly so far no one agrees with you. i "have" also been in mercedes s class, bmw 7 series and audi A8 before. THE NEW ONES TOO! and the door sounded cheap when i closed it "twice", the interior wasn't built as great "or as clean" as the lexus and the interior was "underwhelming" to say the least. The price is way to high and it broke down in the show room. you see, anyone can make up things about a car since we are all online and not many can do anything about it. But thanks for sharing your imagination.
