Yes! I actually think that might be one of the reasons he didn’t want Anthony I can’t remember his last name ( one of the people on his “team” for the boys ) not to win, to almost get there, but fall short. Like if I ever went on the X Factor and won I would just be like “well shi-“
@@user-xc1iz2ln5c no. Not that. I don't remember which interview it was but the interviewer asked them to give the contestants advice and louis didn't answer to him. He and niall were talking on the side but you can clearly hear them and he said“ our advice don't win”. I'll show you the link if I can find it
they told the guy he was the best audition they had every seen, then said he was too overconfident, then when he calmed down they said he had lost his mojo... bro what
These shows are very scripted. The shows are also edited to make people seem the way the producers wish them to be, for the ratings. I am of the opinion that many times the winner is selected prior to the perceived opened ending. There is a lot of fakery going on in reality TV.
*shows reasonable confidence * "You're too arrogant and full of yourself" *tries to appear more down to earth * "you lost your mojo, you've been stripped back too much"
Maybe not "rigged" in the strict sense of the word, but certainly manipulated. They don't tamper the voting count, but with an ethos like the one portrayed in this video, they certainly lead the audiences to vote a certain way in a skeevy fashion.
Yea like she can sing just that too much riffing is going on. But Simon saying that she has no talent is so wrong. Simon's judgment comes across to me as being very flawed. Like Tori Kelly as Human Orange or Amber Riley? Even he shaded Nicole that she can't sing. Like damn that woman can just play her performance of Phantom of the Opera and he will become a mouse instantly
And this is exactly why I dislike all modern singing competition shows. It's not about raw talent, it's not about who has the best star potential.......it's so phony and predictable.
That's the way life is too. Selena Gomez isn't the best singer, but she's selling the same amount of records as Ariana Grande. It's about everything combined, not just raw talent.
@@ASmith-jn7kf I agree about that too. It started making me cringe watching American Idol, because it was so predictable they were plucking ppl with certain stories out to push on us vs. concerning themselves with just talent and who deserves it more based on the talent and journey
@@cutienerdgirl Are u really taking Ariana Grande's example as the opposite of Selena Gomez? Both are mostly the same, average kinda good singers who succeed due to other factors.
danyl johnson is a family friend of mine and he’s genuinely one of the loveliest people out there. Watching him get emotionally manipulated by the judges is awful :/
I didn’t recognise it at the time but seeing it laid out like this is horrendous 😧 I do hope he’s doing well now and hasn’t let that bullying affect him
Not anymore, Simon. He is left with his failing tv formats (which he had to buy back with his own money from Sony) and the music part of Syco is now back in Sony's hands. Not Simon's. I love this song.
A quick note on Danyl Johnson - It's actually in the contract you have to sign before you even audition for the show that the showrunners are allowed to slander you and lie about you to the public, and you're not allowed to do anything about it. There are videos online of people who've managed to get their hands on copies of said contract and go through it step by step, breaking down exactly what each part means.
I signed such a contract back in 2015 when I auditioned, but from what I recall, it was more about them being allowed to use you for outtakes and blooper reels, and that by consenting to that, you give them full licence.
Danyl seems to be doing ok these days anyway, he is in the People's Postcode Lottery advert knocking on peoples' doors, along with that baby faced former childrens' tv presenter.
Aren’t the runners just the people who go and buy people coffe and hold leads and shit like that? I’d laugh if it was just those people slagging you off backstage 😂
Melanie Martinez is one of the only The Voice contestants I can even name. The only other one is Emily Luther but that's because she was a guest teacher for my chorus.
They did some crap like that to Misha B too. That's why I can't watch shows like this, they toy with people, slander them,, and even if they win and succeed they try take away any control or agency they have.
@@CaribbeanCitizen These shows have a narrative to sell, much like if it were a fictional story with writers. But instead of fictional characters, they're messing with real people who have real emotions. That's why I'm not a huge fan of reality TV. They treat real people as if they were merely characters in the story they WANT to tell.
@@DrillEntertainmentNetwork because narrative sells. I even got pulled into it a long time ago, but then I realized every one of these are the same, and it got old real fast for me.
I enjoyed those but I've seen some people say that on live the judges are super supportive and stimulate the bad singers so they can be overly confident and shame them when they're being recorded. I don't have any receipts but I sincerely don't doubt it They are still hilarious tho
@@MariaLuiza-tp2dc that's only prove how fake these shows are. I hate it when they have someone very talented and then music starts playing like "all his dreams will come true soon" and I'm like "no, we had these talented contestants 100 times in every city and after shows' ending they get forgotten almost every time".
I don't know about u but I just laughed at this comment even tho I'm suffering on this very dreadful ingrown toenail😂🤧 especially that this is my 3rd time to have ingrown toenail again and also had 3 minor toe surgery just to get it removed🤦🤦🤦🤧🤧🤧
I still remember when Kelly Clarkson walked into the audition room and sang with such confidence and fire in her voice. And then Simon Cowell went on to dislike her for the longest time with no apparent reason other than not liking her “vibe”, AKA the X factor.
Yeah I was referring to her American Idol audition, since the theory in this video applies to most if not all contemporary singing competitions. Clarkson and her victory can be seen as sort of an exception but apart from her talent (and confidence in it), she was still basically an ordinary girl (not super pretty/rich etc.) which the audience could relate to. And she went on to have a successful career I think partially because she was never THAT ordinary and always has a 'star quality' to her personality and voice right from the beginning.
Brit didn't like her Americanness. American brashness rubs a lot of foreigners the wrong way. European don't get that about Americans. On the one hand, it's very honest because it's the way American culture; every waitress in America is like Clarkson. European don't get that about Americans. On the other hand, there's a sticky-sweet contrived optimism to it that's co-opted in Hollywood that makes it seem phony.
No, you've got it wrong. This was the first season and before this whole formula was proven. Kelly fits the formula to the tee, minus the sob story. Simon hated her BECAUSE of this. When AI s1 first aired, it was at a time when pop artists with slick images reigned supreme (Nsync, BSB, Britney, Christina, etc). Simon was looking for a Britney or Justn Timberlake, which is why he preferred the girls that were slimmer and more trendy, and singers like Justin Gaurini.
I went to see the auditions live a few years ago, and there was this one guy (I don’t remember his name, Prince something) who was really good, had tones of charisma, got the crowd going instantly, and he wasn’t even aired
My name is Fred Gordon Herbert, and I go by Fred Herbert. But some people would go by Gordon let's say, even though it's their middle name: you know? I've been a bail bondsman for 45 years and a cop before that for four or five years, so I mean I think I've seen it all! Started smoking weed in 1970 at the very tail end of being a cop... it's ruining my life. Went to an AA meeting just yesterday. No they don't help us at all! I'm single, so... what's your grandma's number?
I never realized how the winners never do well until I look back at one direction and how successful they are even tho they came in 3rd. I have no idea who even beat them
But the members of one direction actually auditioned as solo artists. They failed the preliminary audition. Until Simon Cowell told the 5 boys to join together as a group.
@@jodiepalmer2404 yeah but I'm saying that if you look at past winners you don't really see alot about them but you seem to see people who didn't win alot, its almost like you do better when you don't win
@@ivanivez7456 yes i stand with Leona Lewis. Her first album outsold Little Mix 5 albums together and she managed to crack the US. Anyways, i like LM but their last album didn't sell well and the last 3 singles all underperformed
This is why I never liked signing reality shows. I knew from the moment Samuel Hung was made fun of during the first season of American Idol years ago, that there was something completely wrong with this stuff.
It is William Hung, but I do agree with everything you said. These shows have never been about music or singing - it has always been about views, popularity contests and sob stories.
Timliu92 Above all they are about PUBLIC HUMILIATION. Once I learned that the bad singers have passed through 2 rounds of judging before they get to the on screen judges, I was out. It is beyond cruel to puff someone up telling them how great they are just so you can crush them on t.v. for the entertainment of millions of viewers.

Actually if they're that fucking dumb they should be held up to public ridicule.
Just because you have talent doesn’t mean you can handle 1:life on the road away from friends and family 2: constantly being sick from traveling 3: dealing with shady people on a daily basis 4: pressured by a label to look and talk a certain way, to put out a certain amount of music in a certain amount of time, and make a certain amount of money to payback your record deal advance money (loan) or youre in debt for life
afootineachworld true. But when it comes to singers. The ones who are most successful are often the ones who can write their own songs. Yes there are singers who buy songs off of good songwriters, but there’s just something really genuine about them writing their own music, and putting their own heart and soul into it. Edit: not saying people who buy songs from songwriters are any less genuine with their singing. I just think that there’s something special about the way a person who writes their own songs can connect to the words and melody. Now I’m just sounding cheesy, but I hope you catch my drift.
@@evelynmidgley7620 I think what this statement means, is that if you can't write your own songs, then you have to hope that you are famous enough for people to want to write songs for you. This is why many popular artists stay famous without having to write their own songs, and why many new artists don't make it.
Well they have to have some weepy story about a dead/dying relative to help them with audience sympathy. We all have tragic stories, but apparently, people must like listening to somebody else prattle on about it instead of focusing on the point of the show or they wouldn't do it. Personally, I couldn't care less, that's what makes the dvr so great for these shows imo. "My dog died and my tires went flat..." skip
I should add, "the judges" barely see anyone. Even from the start, they would only see maybe 10 acts a day. The rest were seen by secondary judges also. Lots of people get a bye through to "Bootcamp" also. A colleague of mine was in the bootcamp with Alexandra Burke and only appeared on camera for maybe 10 seconds, i'm not sure you even heard him. As a slight aside. I also think the reason the runners up also do so well is, if you win. You're tied into a multi album deal, so many press engagements and so on. If you're a runner up, you're free from all that and record companies will come knocking.
Holly G it’s thought that Simon rigged the result of 1D series so that then the boys thought they weren’t good enough so that they would sign to Simons contract and Simon could do anything to them. Basically manipulating them. Simon knew they would be big and used that to his advantage
I know that in Little Mix's case (the most successful _winners_ of the show) they had to produce 5 albums with Simon Cowell's label before their contract would end, hence why they changed record labels as soon as their 5th album was finished. It took them 7 years of near constant music production, tours and promo to get out, and the only reason they managed it was cause they're so popular, no wonder other winners cant do it...
Fiona B yeah seems most likely. Just sad that he has no morals and does anything for money. I know that simons management company modest forced Sam Smith into the closet and once he left modest he came out and as did many others who signed with modest (don’t remember names)
Performer: i love singing and i want to win Judges: confident much? (4 nos) Performer 2: I'm bad at singing but my dog died and my sister died and i was bullied before Judges: golden buzzer
Man I remember when back in the day everyone hated 1D And now they're pretty popular. I can finally say I like their music without being bullied lmao. 1D was awesome. Kinda glad they lost bc other wise i doubt they would've gotten as big.
Yep were in an age where Prince would have never been signed. Michael Jackson would have never been signed. Pretty much anyone wth a rare genius would be tossed out. Were doing the participation award winner class of 2005 right now.
The Truth Channel: we’re also in an age where you can pursue almost any hobby without having to spend major $$$$ (cameras, recording devices, tutorials, etc are super cheap) The trade off is good I think.
Lol there's a formula in everyone there. They always show their sob ridiculous stories again and again. Are you saying you didn't notice that? How old are you?
@@Mas0808 I've noticed that. Emotional manipulation. I've joked on that many times but never got that X Factor point. I never related to anyone there. I've never lost anyone I cared about and my empathy isn't that high.
To be fair, contestants want to use the show for fame and fortune, and the show wants to use the contestants for the same reason. It's a win-win, lose-lose situation.
It's for the success of their show so it can continue, not necessarily for the artist. I wonder though, when prospective contestants start to notice that no one really succeeds after the show, what will happen to the X Factor. How long will it be around?
I honestly think that these reality singing competitions aren’t actually about how well you can sing. It’s all about if you have a tragic backstory or if you’re loved by the public. Me and my mom watch every season of the X factor and we recently watched the X factor celebrity (basically a bunch of already successful famous people try to get more famous by attempting to sing on a very poplar singing competition). I remember this one guy who could not sing as well as all the other celebrities but kept on advancing to the next round only because people loved him so much. Despite the fact that he had no talent whatsoever. I remember this one episode in which the guy was in the bottom two. The person he was going up against was a very good singer and was a natural when it came to being on stage. They outshone the guy in pretty much every single way but yet he still came out on top and advanced to the next round only because the judges knew how popular he was and wanted to cash in on that.
@@mitjamackenzie1219 Vinnie Jones. Though the same could be said about Martin Bashir. I don't know them outside of the x-factor so I didn't pay much attention to them while watching. It only really started to annoy me when real talent was thrown aside just to keep them in. I hold no hatred towards the two but I do think they're a good example of what talent shows are favoring when it comes to the contestants and their marketability.
This is absolutely right. I'm a fan of a woman who used to post on YT all the time. She was extremely charismatic, beautiful voice, sexy, even a good actress -- she brings out the drama in her songs. So far as I'm concerned, she could have stepped right onto a Broadway stage. Another fan asked her if she had ever tried out for American Idol? She had; and she had a very good audition. But a producer told her they were looking for someone they could "bring along" -- that the judges and the audience could mold, week by week, and fit into an "ordinary person becomes extraordinary" narrative, rather than a polished performer. There MANY people out there who could bring up the standard of performances, but they're either too good, or they don't have a sob story.
At last! I meet the determiner of the nature of reality. Impressive. It's Ysabella Brave, a veteran RUclips in its early years. She's started reposting some of her videos recently, but I haven't yet checked out if there's anything new. ruclips.net/video/mEieFuIWPYc/видео.html
Honestly, this kind of thing shouldn't be in the least bit surprising. A few years ago there were a few instances of West End performers (as in, people who had literally been doing various musicals in the West End for several years) going on shows like The Voice and while some got pretty far, others fell by the wayside fairly quickly and none of them won. All these shows are looking for completely raw and malleable talent that they can twist to suit their own purposes.
Wow man pretty whack that you had to be asked who the youtuber was instead of including that information in the original post. That said she really is great, thanks for sharing. ( Though her apartment looked like a bit of a dump so doesn't that make her relatable and a prospective rags to riches story?)
Wow I remember watching how the judges turned on Danyl Johnson years ago and thinking "Why are they bullying him? He did great?" Looking back you're right, they deliberately tried to paint him as this cocky villain to sway the viewers opinions. It's fucked up
Yeah. No one wants to read a book where great things keep happening to somebody. So anyone who begins the show on top needs to reach a demise and vice versa.
I mean Little Mix definitely were the exception to this. They have had many hits since they won in 2011, definitely a huge act to come from the X Factor
Lets not forget their contracts suck major Ass! Leona Lewis is a prime example of someone who could of out grew what You speak of. She lived an ordinary life however really was lightening in a bottle. Her voice was perfect unique and Her album did well in UK and the states! She was never ordinary or boring....She should be Adele status! Sadly her contract did her in....and Simon dropped the ball on her career. Not even remotely promoting her second album which was WAY better then the first Had she lost the competition she be free to be picked up by a better label and contract and she be a superstar today!
people don’t listen to adele cause she writes her stuff they listen to her because she makes hits. Its all about having good material weather you write it or not. Beyonce, Rihanna, Demi Lavato, Ariana Grande, Janet, Whitney, Britney, Christian, Celine, and jlo alot of them have writing credits but for the most part they pick the best tracks from songwriters. Its all about working with great songwriters if you arent a writer yourself.
she could have and should have been much bigger, for an X Factor winner she was certainly great, Adele status i’m not so sure but i totally do get what you mean, she really deserved more and has a great voice i feel she’s a bit underrated
Afonso Fonseca i think that was because simon wasn’t present for that season of X factor. Lucky for little mix. I love the girls and im so glad they are successful.
Emma Jamieson he has tbh. Poor management, along with him being a cheapskate, poor treatment of artists. He’s not making money by trying to conserve it. One day his business will probably go bankrupt imo.
Definitely, probably the most successful act ever on Xfactor, they had the storyline to back it up as well tbh with all being put together from towns and cities across Britain and Ireland
eurovision50 there's an expectation that the winners will do the best, because they're supposed to BE the best, and they receive a million dollar record deal for basically free. even with more losers of great talent, they are guaranteed a chance at stardom
or that fact that in the contracts you must sign to do this show is that they own every aspect of your life, all of your social media, everything you have ever writen music wise and anything you will ever write/sing.
And as this is a singing comp not songwriting most winners are given songs to sing and that means competing with established artists for them. Good luck getting the good ones.
@@thewerewolff7248 anyone with longevity in the industry at least has some power over who their songwriters are and what they sing about. Rihanna doesn't write but she guides the direction of her music and chooses her songs. If the contract doesn't allow them to have say in what they sing, the audience can feel the inauthenticity
@@thewerewolff7248 Singers don't have to write their music, but pop stars do, because what a pop star sells is their personality expressed through music, not pure music, and you can't really have someone else write your life story for you since no human being can fully understand a human being other than themselves. In pop, music is a means to an end, not the end.
@@xyzno1cancer I think in any musical genre, one's life is expressed through the song. Rock, jazz, R & B, rap, alternative music, etc usually follow the same rule. Music is art and any art form expresses the viewpoints and life story of the creator. You can see the same expression in literature, the visual arts, and the performing arts.
I went to watch the X factor auditions this year and while we waited for the actual tickets they made us do the opening bit of the show. We had to walk up and down the barriers and act like we were really excited to be auditioning and hold up signs that THEY had made. We stood there in the sun for FOUR HOURS and mainly did stuff for filming. They even filmed people handing out sandwiches and rolls and as soon as the cameras were off they asked for it all back. We only stayed because at around 10:30 they said Dermot would be out in 15 mins. Dermot didn't arrive until nearly 2pm! And during the auditions they really push for a sob story, they asked every contestant about their background and if there were any special meanings to their songs. The only good thing was that Robbie could see that the crowd were bored sometimes and would interact with us a lot, including making everyone sing angels. So yeh, in summary if you watch this series of the x factor the opening bit where people were lining up are bored and annoyed members of the audience who were being forced into jumping around and dancing. The people directing were even getting frustrated with us because we didn't look happy enough even though we din't want to be there and got no choice because the tickets hadn't even been printed yet.
How to win the X factor •Have the ability to sing •Have a sob story/Have a disability •Make sure you cry a lot •Be overly eccentric •Be an average jo (Extra points if you are gay, trans, or ugly)

With Little Mix, it wasn't just the winners curse. It was a groups curse. Before them, the group's category was the kiss of death for the judges. Tulisa of N-Dubs was their mentor that year.
@@MsSilverTulip looking at these comments and why the heck are more people not talking about James? 😂 maybe they don’t think he came from this talent show?.. which is a good thing!
Interesting video. As an ex contestant I can confirm you are spot on with this although there is more that goes on and it goes a little deeper and perhaps darker than this. It's not rigged or set up but the manipulation of acts and the control of public perception is a big part. I had an amazing experience but the negative aspects from how I was portrayed still bother me today. It's not healthy and what they are selling is the dream of celebrity and lots of drama and maybe a good artist rises from the heap of used and broken singers left along the way. But they are all expendable. When you've seen how a magician does his tricks you have no interest in watching which is why I haven't watched one of these in 10 years. I think the voice has a more honest open approach but even then there is control of what is seen and heard.
I had a friend who was taken off American Idol. Actually him and another guy because everyone wanted to have prayer before the rehearsal that day and my friend and this other guy led everyone in prayer. Ok, Cowells partner walked in and threw a fit. He went into this whole big speech about Americans fooling themselves with their guns God and religion. He basically made everyone look stupid and later he sent some spies to find out who led the prayer. One of the lesser producers wives pulled my friend aside and told him. I dont know why but she didnt like what happened and she pulled him aside and expained to him what had happened. See, they pulled him aside and gave him a script to read into the camera and it was basically putting down another cast member. He refused. And she said that was the only way he could stay. If he read that garbage they would let him stay. If he didnt they were going to send him home over the prayer thing that happened. He ripped up the card and went to the hotel got his stuff and flew back to Dallas. He just left.
Yes 100% true! The guy who went was actually on one of my worship teams at a big church I was on staff at in Dallas. The other guy I didnt know. He was a guy that my guy met out there during rehearsals. Its a tv show. Thats the goal... to do tv. Not find new talent.
The Truth Channel as entertaining as they can be you are absolutely right you only hear about 2 or 3 people from each talent show in the spotlight while the other winners it’s like they don’t exist anymore. And the fact they stopped someone from praying..... God is very pleased with your friend for leaving something big, God will have major plans for your friend. Take care
And yet you have people saying how good a judge Simon when Tori, Amber and even Nicole (he shaded her being unable to hold a tune in front of a contestant as well as the audience until he had to shut up when she sang Whitney lol) would be like "Hello, are you serious?"
My theory is they were set to be a group from the start but needed the sob story of being put together so they can become great. Nothing in the music industry that is soo successful happens by accident.
There should be a reality competition where contestants are only allowed to perform songs that they originally write and/or produce. Maybe work with industry coaches to create the music and then perform on stage. It becomes boring and overdone when contestants are performing songs that made other people famous.
There's a show like that in Canada it's called the launch. People audition and even sing their own song. They audition if front of a producer who has created a song for them. The winner gets their version of the song released.
A.S. Holmes What if a great singer failed bc they aren't good songwriters, therefore can't bring out the most in them. That's talent and potential wasted.
They don't succeed because they get signed to a crippling contact which allows them to be shelved and not produce any music for 10 years if Simon Cowell chooses. The runners up are free to sing for who they want which is why they are always more successful. Good theory, but it's not why they aren't successful, it's their contact.
so. would the best idea to pop on and “win” by making it to the finals and then sabotaging your own performance so you get runner up. you wont get signed into the crippling contest but you will still have a belt of good performances and will most likely have someone else notice you and offer you a better contract.
They can't force the winner to sign anything. Unless contestants signed the actual contract before winning - in case they win.. Would be absurd if there was a contract forcing you to sign another contract
No, it's not just the winners who have to sign a crippling contract. EVERYONE who auditions on the X Factor HAS to sign a binding 10 year contract before they ever even appear on tv, just in case they get hugely popular. If they do become popular, then Simon Cowells company SyCo owns the rights to them (and any videos or music they may have previously produced in the past). The 'runners-up' would have had to have signed that same binding contract before they auditioned, and would have found any success they've had either while continuing with SyCo (or one of their subsidiary companies), or they were able to convince another company to buy them out that contract.
Wizard th Wizard if it’s just about talent, then it would be the same show over and over again. Nobody will watch it. That’s why it’s “scripted” to make it fit for television. It’s not a talent show, it’s a TV show, and treated as such
Problem w/ these kind of talent competitions is that the 'talent pool' is very different from yr to yr - those yrs when the talent is not that 'special', the producers try to create some 'drama' for ppl to follow & watch. Also, their ratings are horrible so expect more fabricated BS in the future. ps: great video.
Reality TV in general is garbage. One thing that will always work in society is using mythos to make poorer/less educated people interested in an entity. Whether it's Jesus or a X-Factor contestant. It shocks me how popular the Kardashians are still.
Well, a lot of famous acts have came out of the X Factor. The Voice, on the other hand hasn't managed to bring any successful artist to the scene, ever. I feel like that show is more about get the career of the coaches back on track than finding actually talented people and make stars out of them... You should do one on the voice, for sure.
I totally agree with you. X factor has launched at least some successful singers / groups. The Voice is a worst singing show. I do not know any winner or contestant from The Voice that became worldwide famous.
Loved this. I think the only exceptions have been Leona Lewis & Little Mix. And what I've noticed since their wins has been that, especially with Little Mix, it seemed like Simon didn't want them to win. Or if he did, he didn't want them to become the massive sellers that they did because he seems to invest very little in them since their win, at least outside of the UK (in the UK, they're his cash crops). And as for Leona Lewis, well, we've all seen how dirty the label did her. After seeing this video and noticing the pattern and structure of how the show primes their winners, it feels like they broke the mold and Cowell wasn't very happy about it because it sets up future seasons for something outside of his control. I may be reaching here, but it seems like they're being held back by the label, whereas acts like One Direction who didn't even win were given massive promo & so much money was invested into making them chart worldwide, to the point where some of them have now been able to leave Simon Cowell's control.
I’m a massive 1D fan and I can agree that they were way more promo then the others from their season, from the start Simon Cowell showed favoritism to them, and said that he wanted them to win, then they lost and that also became a “trope” in the fact that it showed that people didn’t have to win to be successful.
i think that has more to do with the fact that one direction is based on a proven formula and everybody knows how well boy groups sell to young girls worldwide. even look at how DNA and BTS are doing - girls are the most passionate buyers and they crave an act like that, even if they speak another language. in the absence of one direction, k-pop boy groups are on the rise.
The only thing keeping Little Mix afloat is their dedicated fanbase (which has made them quite successful). It's very unfortunate considering there will be no American competition after 5H breaks up, and they probably still won't be promoted at all.
"Why are you auditioning for the X-factor?" Random contestant: "Because I'm dying" Judges: "ok that's a yes for me" Random contestant: "I haven't sung yet..."
Brits love the underdog, that's why the runners up do better. Brits don't like anyone to get ideas above their station which they assume will happen to the winners so the audience cuts their career short very early on.
GiantsRTheBest1 Well, I never said Brits were the *only* ones who go for the underdog. It's just more noticeable with British people. And not everyone loves the underdog as much as Brits. Americans don't. They prefer outright winners as they worship fame. Brits like to make sure winners don't get too cocky. The British press are noted for that attitude which filters to the public. The way winners are treated after these types of competitions proves that. Read any comment section on any one of these forgotten winners - people seem happy they failed a lot of the time. When the "losers" of these contests end up doing well, like One Direction, Olly Murs etc. Its like the public punished them by not voting for them and, after we took pleasure in seeing them cry / upset on national TV, we will now take pity on them as they "need" us, so we will now buy their records and support them. The actual winner? Meh. We voted for them to win, now they're on their own.
Except the video's premise holds true to American singing reality/competition shows, too. Only a couple of the winners had more than fleeting success, while several of the losers had better and/or more lasting success. Although I think there's another aspect in that I think that people who are most likely to vote in these shows don't always overlap with the people who are most likely to buy the music, adding to the discrepancy.
Kimberly Kohn OK, that's fine. I do agree with you and the previous comment from the other guy: people DO love the underdog, in general. My point was, Brits are just mean about the winners failing so they root for the underdog more. Ha. There's a savagery in the Brit press and, to a lesser degree, the public. Also, there is so much less pressure for the losers to achieve, so when they do, the public are intrigued by it as it's unexpected. This intrigue seems to lead to sales. With the winner, the public thinks their work is done as they supported the winner with votes on the show. The public doesn't seem to realise that winning is just the beginning of the singer's journey. It's like a couple thinking the high of their wedding day is the be all and end all; no it isn't. The real work is for the rest of their lives!
Can't help but thinking you're talking about the Season with Adam Lambert on it - To this day, so many people think he was robbed compared to Kris Allen
Adam Lambert, yes. Biggest snuff I’ve ever seen on a talent show. He was so obviously the winner since his very first audition let’s be honest. But it actually worked out better for him because when you win AI you are under contract with them and it’s very oppressive how much they control the singer and their financials. So it worked out fantastic for Adam in the end cause regardless of a win or not he was always going to make it big. He was born a star, that one.
No Adam basically Sabotaged his own chance of winning. While he always came across camp there was always that 'Oh it's just that he is from a theatre background that's just the way they are' element that could be applied to him. Then just before the final photos came out of what was said to be him kissing a guy, he did the right thing and owned them and the fact he was gay. That becomes a problem because when you are a recording artist all you need to do to be successful is hit a certain demo, you can have every other demo hate you and still be a success. On a reality singing show you can't be hated by even one demo, you basically need to be mr or mrs inoffensive. If you can not piss off any demo you are onto a winner. In Adam's case he pissed off large amounts of demo's in America by coming out as gay while Kris Allen was less creative but was a decent singer and have no-one a reason to hate them
Wait... is that the reason why Demi Lovato's team never did good on the show? Because she chose those who actually can compete in the industry? For example she chose CeCe Frey over Jillian Jensen... despite Jillian talking about being bullied... CeCe just had the “real“ x factor? Edit: HOLY SHIT, THANKS FOR THE LIKES GUYS
The series itself was a failure, but it did give us 3 things: Fifth Harmony, Camilla Cabello, and a montage of Britney Spears facial expressions I have saved on my computer to respond to every conversation ever.
I feel like even now Olly Murs is struggling in the current pop climate. He hasn't had a number 1 since 2012 and hasn't had a single crack the top 10 since 2014.
True the argument that the losers do better is even untrue now as it’s really only one direction as individuals that are charting. I think the only one still with simons label is Louis and he has done the worst
You can probably count the number of people/groups that got really famous and are still famous in the entire series on one hand. The two most people think of (1D and LittleMix) got so popular cause they filled an empty niche in the market at the time and groups are much more easily latched onto by obssessive fans than solo artists. As far as I'm aware, most XFactor graduates, whether they win or not, have a handful of hits then fade away. There are a couple of exceptions, but (like the majority of pop singers/groups) people just become uninterested. Olly definitely did significantly better than Joe or any other contestant from that year. Joe McElderry did your typical winner thing: Got the Xmas #1 then was never heard of again. Stacey Solomon isn't a singer anymore. She released A couple of poor performing songs then went into presenting. Jedward had a couple of hits and went to Eurovision a couple of times, but that's it. Lucie Jones also did Eurovision. The rest just never had anything come of it.
I think his style has just fallen out of favour. Olly Murs is sort of seen as cringe pop by the mainstream compared to the usual electronic, sampled, fame/sex/money type pop songs. I think he's very late 2000s and never really evolved past that sound, that's a big reason why his career has tanked.
its also because the contract contestants sign contracts that limits the content they release and the agency running them doesn't promote them well. Unless yo're unique and a cut above the rest you've failed from the start.
This is literally what’s happening to little mix right now! They won the show in 2011, and have been doing great with their multi platinum selling singles and albums. However the PROMO IS SHIT. THeir label literally doesn’t give a fuck, they won’t let them expand internationally or anything ( no perfumes or Any thing else available outside the UK) I genuinely believe the only reason they’re going strong is because of their loyal fan base
Brian Bryan, WInners do NOT get a million dollars in cash. They get practically nothing in cash after recouperation. What you do get is a recording contract advance that is ''UP TO'' the value of 1 million. Who do you think's paying for that mass marketing campaign? Who's paying you to fly around promoting, paying, distributing your album? Who's buying all those fancy designer popstar clothes? Who is buying you a nice new pair of shiny white dental cosmetic teeth treatment, who is paying for the best hair and make-up artists? Pray-tell, who is paying for the TV / Advertising spots? Who is paying to design, press and print your record? Mix and master your record? The session musicians playing on your record? You really think it's free? Then you think Sony are gonna give you another million cash on top of that?
This is why I stopped watching AGT. it became all about the story and less about the talent. Also, I couldn't stand how the judges would cut the most extraordinary people just to put in like 3 dumb acts that made people laugh.

It definitely is rigged.
I think they keep the one with the most votes in but with the rest they don't keep them in their voted order and just kick whoever they want out.
Maybe not "rigged" in the strict sense of the word, but certainly manipulated. They don't tamper the voting count, but with an ethos like the one portrayed in this video, they certainly lead the audiences to vote a certain way in a skeevy fashion.

Oh, hell yeah.
A quick note on Danyl Johnson - It's actually in the contract you have to sign before you even audition for the show that the showrunners are allowed to slander you and lie about you to the public, and you're not allowed to do anything about it. There are videos online of people who've managed to get their hands on copies of said contract and go through it step by step, breaking down exactly what each part means.
that's absolutely insane...
The contract allows them to do whatever they want, but that doesn't mean that they will do everything bad that they can.

I still remember when Kelly Clarkson walked into the audition room and sang with such confidence and fire in her voice. And then Simon Cowell went on to dislike her for the longest time with no apparent reason other than not liking her “vibe”, AKA the X factor.
As far as I know, Kelly wasn't on the X Factor. She won the 1st American Idol.
Rinse and repeat for Jennifer Hudson.
Simon was looking for a Britney or Justn Timberlake, which is why he preferred the girls that were slimmer and more trendy, and singers like Justin Gaurini.

afootineachworld true.

My dad died last October. When do the 2018 auditions begin? Because when my dad died the first thought I had was: X Factor.
"I need the prize money to buy a flying vehicle to find the dragon balls, so I will can resurrect him".
We still haven't buried my grandmother because all I could think of was one thing: X F A C T O R

🦨
For most of the time yes although for many acts simon still scoops them up and ties them in like OneDirection

The Truth Channel: we’re also in an age where you can pursue almost any hobby without having to spend major $$$$ (cameras, recording devices, tutorials, etc are super cheap) The trade off is good I think.
The Incredibles was the first thing I thought when I started watching this video.

JP Kloess great comment
I didn’t realize they were trying to make contestants more relatable.
Not many people do. I can honestly say that i wouldn't have thought about it. But I'm more switched on.
Lol there's a formula in everyone there. They always show their sob ridiculous stories again and again. Are you saying you didn't notice that? How old are you?
thats because you are a tool a sheeple

@@Mas0808 I've noticed that. Emotional manipulation. I've joked on that many times but never got that X Factor point.

@Mohammed oof my bad
So...these shows basically take people with potential and ruin them for the purpose of ratings.

The only winners to ever succeed was little mix

Are you talking about Martin Bashir or Vinnie Jones
@@mitjamackenzie1219 That's what I was wondering.
Well, on the voice there is blind audition were they only hear you’re voice.

Name or it didn't happen
Lol thank you!
It's fucked up
Someone Wasn't Simon his mentor though? That's what he's supposed to do
Yeah. No one wants to read a book where great things keep happening to somebody. So anyone who begins the show on top needs to reach a demise and vice versa.
DJheapzgood Good point, I didn't think of it like that
Yeah that was pretty messed up of them to do that to him. Verbal abuse at it's finest!
Always hate it when the judge is hating on a really good performance.
I mean Little Mix definitely were the exception to this. They have had many hits since they won in 2011, definitely a huge act to come from the X Factor
They weren't popular in the states though
Lets not forget their contracts suck major Ass! Leona Lewis is a prime example of someone who could of out grew what You speak of. She lived an ordinary life however really was lightening in a bottle. Her voice was perfect unique and Her album did well in UK and the states! She was never ordinary or boring....She should be Adele status! Sadly her contract did her in....and Simon dropped the ball on her career. Not even remotely promoting her second album which was WAY better then the first Had she lost the competition she be free to be picked up by a better label and contract and she be a superstar today!
Leona lewis' prime was only around 2007-08
Did she write those hits? I feel like every interview with Adele she talks about writing music, that’s one of the draws clearly
people don’t listen to adele cause she writes her stuff they listen to her because she makes hits.
I am half sure he gets the rights to the contestants too.
she could have and should have been much bigger, for an X Factor winner she was certainly great, Adele status i’m not so sure but i totally do get what you mean, she really deserved more and has a great voice i feel she’s a bit underrated
Little Mix was one of few singers that won and succeed
Afonso Fonseca i think that was because simon wasn’t present for that season of X factor. Lucky for little mix. I love the girls and im so glad they are successful.

Emma Jamieson he has tbh. Poor management, along with him being a cheapskate, poor treatment of artists. He’s not making money by trying to conserve it. One day his business will probably go bankrupt imo.

1D came in 3rd and they might be on hiatus for A fEw MoNtHs, but they're still super famous
hannah they succeed because the band had a huge fan base that encouraged Simon to sign them. He would continue to promote the band for money.
Definitely, probably the most successful act ever on Xfactor, they had the storyline to back it up as well tbh with all being put together from towns and cities across Britain and Ireland

@@ThaoLe-ob3lo she is almost forgotten
Susan boyle?
@Anneka Olly Murs didn't win. We're talking about X Factor winners lol
The most important reason to why there are more successful X Factor losers than winners is that there are more losers than winners.
You're so right... I really didn't buy the logic in this video.
eurovision50 there's an expectation that the winners will do the best, because they're supposed to BE the best, and they receive a million dollar record deal for basically free. even with more losers of great talent, they are guaranteed a chance at stardom
or that fact that in the contracts you must sign to do this show is that they own every aspect of your life, all of your social media, everything you have ever writen music wise and anything you will ever write/sing.
Also being a good singer means nothing. You need good songs to sing. Even mediocre or bad singers can make it with good songs.
And as this is a singing comp not songwriting most winners are given songs to sing and that means competing with established artists for them. Good luck getting the good ones.
The contract is horrible and The Winners cant write/ produce music
Anselminos a lot of singers don’t write their own music tho. Song writers exist for a reason
A lot of them do....especially those with longevity

Daniel Evans the voice is just as bad even worse from what I’ve heard
I had a friend who was taken off American Idol. Actually him and another guy because everyone wanted to have prayer before the rehearsal that day and my friend and this other guy led everyone in prayer. Ok, Cowells partner walked in and threw a fit. He went into this whole big speech about Americans fooling themselves with their guns God and religion. He basically
made everyone look stupid and later he sent some spies to find out who led
the prayer. One of the lesser producers wives pulled my friend aside and told
him. I dont know why but she didnt like what happened and she pulled him aside and expained to him what had happened. See, they pulled him aside
and gave him a script to read into the camera and it was basically putting down another cast member. He refused. And she said that was the only way he could stay. If he read that garbage they would let him stay. If he didnt they were going to send him home over the prayer thing that happened. He ripped up the card and went to the hotel got his stuff and flew back to Dallas. He just left.
The Truth Channel absolutely sickening, is this true?
Take care

also because they're/were all pretty crappy singers
"He knew the show was a bust", it almost sounds like you're saying he isn't the creator of these shows.(Xfactor, American Idol, BGT and AGT).

There was it was called Platinum Hit it was on Bravo a long time ago and didn't get good ratings
The sad thing is that it doesn't filter out terrible song writers
As a show, it probably woildng last.
So guy was too good so they screwed him so an underdog could win?
They don't succeed because they get signed to a crippling contact which allows them to be shelved and not produce any music for 10 years if Simon Cowell chooses. The runners up are free to sing for who they want which is why they are always more successful.
Good theory, but it's not why they aren't successful, it's their contact.
so. would the best idea to pop on and “win” by making it to the finals and then sabotaging your own performance so you get runner up. you wont get signed into the crippling contest but you will still have a belt of good performances and will most likely have someone else notice you and offer you a better contract.
@@GloomyZoroark You could sing poorly and still win because you're the fan favorite.
The 'runners-up' would have had to have signed that same binding contract before they auditioned, and would have found any success they've had either while continuing with SyCo (or one of their subsidiary companies), or they were able to convince another company to buy them out that contract.
james arthur is a big example of this he left the label and just grew
It’s sad a talent show can’t actually be about talent instead it’s about how people much drama people attract .
Wizard th Wizard if it’s just about talent, then it would be the same show over and over again. Nobody will watch it. That’s why it’s “scripted” to make it fit for television. It’s not a talent show, it’s a TV show, and treated as such

Little Mix & James Arthur are the only winners who haven’t been forgotten & faded out of the spotlight.
Very true- narratives needs to be spun to give the show some thrust. Thanks for watching!
So normal people who win or lose, are not so unique that they can countiniue being unique, so they disapears instead?
Reality TV in general is garbage. One thing that will always work in society is using mythos to make poorer/less educated people interested in an entity. Whether it's Jesus or a X-Factor contestant. It shocks me how popular the Kardashians are still.
xAA7 Kardashian who? :-) well, maybe they just wanto find true people, who can still be unique?
Well, a lot of famous acts have came out of the X Factor. The Voice, on the other hand hasn't managed to bring any successful artist to the scene, ever. I feel like that show is more about get the career of the coaches back on track than finding actually talented people and make stars out of them... You should do one on the voice, for sure.
I totally agree with you. X factor has launched at least some successful singers / groups. The Voice is a worst singing show. I do not know any winner or contestant from The Voice that became worldwide famous.

@jtmichelle So many seasons of the Voice, and only one famous person??? This is definitely the worst show.
@@xyhc Cassadee Pope Won the voice and she became successful.
Vera Blue placed 3rd I think?, and she's done pretty well in Australia
Smh it’s such a shame that little mix doesn’t get more promo in America/Worldwide they are so talented & deserve even more success
i think that has more to do with the fact that one direction is based on a proven formula and everybody knows how well boy groups sell to young girls worldwide. even look at how DNA and BTS are doing - girls are the most passionate buyers and they crave an act like that, even if they speak another language. in the absence of one direction, k-pop boy groups are on the rise.
The only thing keeping Little Mix afloat is their dedicated fanbase (which has made them quite successful). It's very unfortunate considering there will be no American competition after 5H breaks up, and they probably still won't be promoted at all.
Little mix are very much underdogs I don’t think Simon thought anything of them really until get weird era

Brits love the underdog, that's why the runners up do better. Brits don't like anyone to get ideas above their station which they assume will happen to the winners so the audience cuts their career short very early on.
Robert Jones |everyone loves an underdog story not just British people
GiantsRTheBest1 Well, I never said Brits were the *only* ones who go for the underdog.
I'll admit, I don't actually know anything about that, being a sad American. Here, the winners don't get savaged, they just get forgotten.
I will never forgive them for what they did to Danyl.

There was a season of American idol where they purposely changed the winner because they knew the runner up would be successful if he lost
In Adam's case he pissed off large amounts of demo's in America by coming out as gay while Kris Allen was less creative but was a decent singer and have no-one a reason to hate them
@@raexrockstar Except the people voted for Kris, there was no funny business behind the scenes.
And then there's Chris Daughtry too. I can't even remember who won the season he was in AI
The music sounds like we’re talking about the illuminati mafia lol.
*Hillary Clinton want to know your location*
Or scp files
Bohemian Grove?
@@kenewbell7755 Hillary is an SCP... makes sense.
Wait... is that the reason why Demi Lovato's team never did good on the show? Because she chose those who actually can compete in the industry? For example she chose CeCe Frey over Jillian Jensen... despite Jillian talking about being bullied... CeCe just had the “real“ x factor?
Edit: HOLY SHIT, THANKS FOR THE LIKES GUYS
Luna Lovegood Lovatic S idk what u r talking about. LOL x factor us was a fail
dancingonmy0wn Yeah it was :) uhm... i don't know what or how to explain XD
The series itself was a failure, but it did give us 3 things: Fifth Harmony, Camilla Cabello, and a montage of Britney Spears facial expressions I have saved on my computer to respond to every conversation ever.
*that might not be 3 don't tell anyone*
KendylTV omg yessss!! And that awkward moment with the host and a Rachel Crow crying. And Khloe Kardashian hosting. ❤️ lol
Ngl but that background music was giving me the creeps😂👀
Gabriele Banyte Same 😂
What is it called?
Thank god. I thought I was just being a wuss lol
BO CHEN it’s an scp foundation sound track
Gabriele Banyte trust me
I feel like even now Olly Murs is struggling in the current pop climate. He hasn't had a number 1 since 2012 and hasn't had a single crack the top 10 since 2014.
A Selenator's View he is now a judge on the Voice, his career is deffo done haha. That’s such a shame because he is fantastic
True
I think his style has just fallen out of favour. Olly Murs is sort of seen as cringe pop by the mainstream compared to the usual electronic, sampled, fame/sex/money type pop songs. I think he's very late 2000s and never really evolved past that sound, that's a big reason why his career has tanked.
0:00 When this song plays, you know you've gone *_DEEP_* into RUclips.
its also because the contract contestants sign contracts that limits the content they release and the agency running them doesn't promote them well. Unless yo're unique and a cut above the rest you've failed from the start.
Brian lath Getting 2nd place is the real prize. All the exposure without the contract.
whattwowhat yes, although 1st pLace gets a cash prize right? Like a million dollars so it's kinda a win win ...if you were poor.
Contracts with Cowells Syco label to be exact.
This is why I stopped watching AGT. it became all about the story and less about the talent. Also, I couldn't stand how the judges would cut the most extraordinary people just to put in like 3 dumb acts that made people laugh.
Simon golden buzzed on some Stormtroopers dancing fortnite 🤦🏻♀️
wait WHAT ? He really did that ?!??
@@halle.8317 yes it was very painful to watch that perfomance.
@@baileysubliminals7192 I just googled it and oh my God. I need to bleach my eyes

Bailey Subliminals thank God we still have brain cells left after that God awful performance
Judges: "Why are you here?"
Contestant: "Because when I was very young, my uhh pigeon died from...uhh..influenza (yes, that'll do) and I want to *sniff* honor his memory."
*All judges burst into tears. Hit golden buzzer.*
I know this will probably get lost in the comments below but sometimes when I’m home alone I like to go out in my garden and cover myself with dirt and pretend I’m a carrot.
Hahaha pinned 😂😂😂 I’ll be out in the yard 😂
I take baths in pickle juice to feel more like a pickle
Peter 😝
trust me... your comment is not lost
Thank you peter, very cool!
Wow I’d always known the X factor and shows like it were “rigged” in a sense but I hadn’t realised how carefully curated the narrative was
Ayo well just wait till you wake up and see how the entire planets population is done
exploiting, manipulating, lying to poor people
Lying or telling the story poor people whats to hear.
Antonio they should be more aware and understand x factor success doesn't mean actual success
Ted Godfrey so its not the snake oil salesman fault, it's the people who bought the oil. Interesting.
It’s the “poor people’s greedy delusional view of grandeur” too that is to blame
Little Mix: Am I a joke to you?
LITERALLY 🙌🏻🙌🏻👑👑👑👑
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT, THANK YOU.
That’s because they demonised misha b and made little mix look like victims who “overcame” and won
No, but they're the exception that proves the rule.
Yes they are a joke. Because they aren't that successful. I meam, they're more successful than the others, but as someone pointed out, leona Lewis outsold all their albums, so how successful are they really
