The 2013 Mustang GT has not aged well when it comes to its interior. It's full of cheap plastics, the gauges look cheap, and the radio looks straight out of a toy car. In order to bring new life to this 111,000 mile 700HP beast I decided to start doing subtle changes to the interior. I knew the first thing that had to go was the radio, and I wanted it to look completely different than just a normal generic head unit. Thankfully I discovered the Phoenix screen - a radio and climate control screen that takes inspiration from Tesla's interface and places it in other cars. I also decided while I was tearing down the interior to install a carbon fiber center console along with carbon fiber steering wheel pieces. In the end I could not be happier with the end result and it feels like a brand new car already! Thanks so much for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!
#tesla #mustang #ford
Everything is chrome in the fuuuutuuure!
Dont know if u watch Rush Shift videos but he has the same screen on his Boss 302
I may have missed it, but do your steering wheel controls carry over to the new unit?
Recap: Long live the "creaking sounds"...of success! Chicken arms require a tool assist. That screen gives me life! VA Beach in da house!
God I hope not smh.... More like carbon nano tubes..... .. .. If the technology ever makes it too main stream production lol
I hope not!
This is MUCH needed on that body style they have more plastic than the Kardashians
Plastic is *cheaper* weight reduction 😊
Na, Kardashian's win any day
The Kardashians actually don't use any plastics. A lot of polymers and silicone
lmao
lol what car isnt mostly plastic nowdays???????
I was skeptical about this screen give us an update in the future how it's holding up
You got it!
Yea I'm curious how it deals with temp changes through the seasons
I've got something similar in my car. Not a Tesla style head unit but a Chinese one nonetheless and it's been perfect for the year and a half that I've had it installed so far.
WildDanHibiki do you know the model?
@@WildDanHibiki the one he installed is also from China
The radio has that big metal cage around it because it sits next to the air/heat vents and when heat is on it heats up the radio.
Demcheck I had an 07 Mustang and the CD player could hold 6 CDs at once. I’m thinking they shrunk the insides and kept that big cage.
My main gripe with these systems is that they seem to run such an old version of Android that it makes them look dated. I love the idea, I just wish the software/UI was a little more up to date.
I have one similar to one of these in my 2010 subaru outback except its not a tesla screen its a 7 inch screen with knobs. mine runs android 9 with an 8 core cpu and 4gbs of ram. its a power house and the support for them on XDA is shockingly great. the units i would keep an eye out for is the Rockchip PX based systems like PX5, PX30. Mine is PX5
You can upgrade it online not a big deal 🤷
old versions are easy to build custom kernels for. that's why 4.4.2 was so damn popular for so long, and is still used in some android radios
Got an Android 9 in my Peugeot 307cc. You can find them for any brand car, and many have special models (like mine has) specific for that car.
@@benjaminvdvyt
Where specifically can you find the downloads for any car? And if you know, how do I update the version of Android?
I'm a techy guy, and I'm actually working on something like this myself with an ipad and an arduino to communicate to the CAN bus. I'm a long way from done, but I was inspired by products like this
I love stuff like that. Super interesting to me
Sounds cool, keep working! 👊🏻
@@NathanaelNaused I'm just roadblocked right now because the free apple computer I was given broke and now I can't develop. I am considering alternatives, but I defintiely want a tablet based UI with a bread board or two that run to amps and the car
Respect friend, you are brave. I have heard it is especially difficult to get anything apple (specifically iOS devices) communicating with anything that isn't a certified accessory. one example is the OBDEleven team, they had to create a whole new device just to get it working for apple devices.
Id be interested in testing out anything. I use forscan so i have a little experience
This is giving me NFS the Movie vibes
I’m a subscriber and I see you everywhere
That car was amazing
same
@@Mattt7940 same
That’s funny because the first TDIB video I ever watched was him reviewing the NFS movie xD
“It’s not that bad to install” *has someone else install it*
Not surprising look at all the past install videos. Always someone else with him or doing all the grunt work. Regardless, these Chinese based android units are utter trash .... they look good but are problematic and with the wrong install all types of issues happen from failed climate controls to even start up failures. Better off with the oem setup not to mention sound quality with the built in amp is hilarious.
@@zookinthe6ix461 Phoenix Automotive isnt some junky chinese android unit lol I have one in a Fusion. Works excellent
I like how you hate on every chanel but you probably get all but hurt when someone hates on you
Zook Inthe6ix what’s wrong with android?
Lewis McDonald he literally said why in his comment ?
yay, now you can always have to look at what your are pressing while driving, rather than just reaching for that easy to find button. the future is great
My thoughts exactly, its a downgrade in usability for an "upgrade" in style.
100% and even tablets get outdated. A clean/simple single or double din would have been a lot better. and could kept the ACTUAL buttons for the a/c instead of having to flip thru the tablet
MASSIVE downgrade in usability
Pretty shitty looks, like a bad android tablet from 2014
Gonna get outdated in 2 years max
look at all the salty poor people who cant afford to upgrade tech in their cars 😂😂😂😂
@@lazarnedeljkovic5615 ngl I did expect an actual tesla dash
I love the retro look of the '13 Mustang GTs!
Also, I only used the CD player once. I just plug in my USB flash drive - and good to go!
It has a cool (IMO) '90s vibe.
I just use a Alexa auto
I had a 99 GT. Will never complain about my 2010's interior coming from that thing.
lmfoa ikr, Sn95 mustangs have horrible plastic interiors
@@cristianramos7343 got an 03 (base) i honestly find the interior to not be that bad.
@@lonewolfsstuck really? I have owned 2 new edges, and both have the crappy plastic interior that rattles and sounds like everything is cracking while driving. Don't get me started with the door panels and the center console bezel lol 😣😅
Cristian Ramos sounds like just really poor maintenance. I have a 98 cobra that the previous owners beat to hell but have never heard noises from the interior rattle. Have owned it for 10 years already. Granted it’s always had headers and exhaust so things are definitely deafened out a bit but even touching things they feel firm. All depends on exposure to heat and etc I’m sure, so every car is a different experience.
@@cristianramos7343 I had one and loved it but man the door panels were so cheap I would go to the junkyard and most had the door handle/window switch trim removed because they commonly broke.
Yeah im definitely going to have to get this to update my 14. Looks awesome.
Would love to see a base to premium cluster swap next!
Ill be honest, in an age of every car having the screen in it, I actually appreciate the all analog button and dial set up of the S197 mustangs. It’s very comfortable to have buttons and dials for HVAC and radio controls.
Normally I'm not the biggest fan of aftermarket screens like this because they have a tendency to look too much like an afterthought, but this one's not bad at all! Massive upgrade!
I've had one in my ST for over a year and love it. It's like having an android tablet in the dash. If you have a hot spot, you can run any apps you want. It was so easy to install.
Chris makes everything look so easy. I thought there would be a lot more to installing that Tesla screen!
you are absolutely correct, on my base model it was confusing having so many plugs and wires not used. Look great and works well.
The screen looks like its android or iphone from like 7 or 8 years ago 😅
It really does biggest turn off for me
He have to update the software
True. And the screen looks awfully dim in the daytime.
I would just install a car play radio
Because these things are garbage running outdated android OS and can't be updated to newer.
Not a fan of mustangs but I love that instead of just buying new mustangs when they come out you are just making yours newer! So awesome man I love when people keep the car that started it all!
it was either this screen or the other one on american muscle. sooo convenient u made this vid lol thanks David.
I noticed almost nobody had made videos on this screen. Glad I could help!
The screen and center console are looking so good on smurff
Looks good man, now we need to wait for them to make a digital gauge cluster for this model and it’ll be set
You can buy those off of Alibaba for half or more than half the price of Phoenix stereos. Same stereo. Only difference is they can help with support if you have questions. But that isn't worth twice the price.
That screen somehow made it look more dated than before cuz the interface looks like a Samsung phone from 2009😂
No way
Your crazy I think it's amazing !! Boy there's haters everywhere
My 2020 has chrome and carbon! 301a package has carbon fiber dash panels! More grey like the stitching everywhere! I love it, can't wait to mod it. Have springs and an H pipe to install asap!
Can you please please please do a review on your new screen, now and in about a month or two later of owning it. I really want to know the pros and cons, before I actually decide to purchase it for my 14 gt.
It’s worth it I’ve had mine installed for 2 weeks
Lol I also put an android head unit in my Ford today. Got the Atoto A6 for $170 and man that's a huge upgrade from the old Kenwood that looked like a UFO crash landed in my dashboard. Your install looked way more straight forward to put in though as I had to trim the plastic lip on the inside that the factory radio clips onto but even still it was worth it. Having voice control is a game changer.
This made the interior look AMAZING. It's crazy what just a couple things can do.
You know, I see this and I can't help but get reminded of the old MCM tutorial video from a long long time ago. The one where they installed an Ipad to replace the center console unit.
I'm actually kind of blown away how accessible it was to take out the factory radio.
The phoenix screen is on the list. David has a straw boss, just like on Cool Hand Luke. You the man David.
I had one of those in my 2019 gt it was laggy and crashed often i eventually replaced it with the ford 8in sync 3 screen much better was $$$ but worth it in the end
I bought the cheapest basic single din head unit I could find with bluetooth, aux, radio and cd (and only use bt lol) and it works perfectly. As much as I want a screen with Nav controls like new cars, I couldn't stand it lagging when I need it. Rather use my S10+ on a phone stand
Buy the six core not the 300$ version
Sharpie Sharpie
6 core? Did you mean the 6 gig one? Cuz thats the one i had don’t remember what i paid maybe i just got unlucky. But i can say the factory touch is miles better just in construction and materials used alone let alone the better software
Matchstick 09 tbh I haven’t even got mine installed yet still in box I was hoping yours was the cheaper one lol hope mine doesn’t mess up all together it was close to 600$ 🤦🏿♂️ I have a 2011 gt my car needs something
Sharpie Sharpie
Naw man i got the expensive one and was not happy with it hope you have better luck than i did though cheers
What an upgrade it has worked wonders compared to your previous set up.
A lot of P3 Volvo parts say FoMoCo on them as well. In fact the IHU on P3 cars say FoMoCo on them as well and the look similar to alot of Ford units.
My P1 Volvo has FoMoCo stamped on a bunch of stuff too. Lots of Focus and Mazda3 parts. Thankfully the Volvos all have Volvo-specific drivetrains (love me a 5-cylinder), and almost all of my interior is Volvo specific. I believe it was just P1 and P3 cars that were Ford-based. P2 was all Volvo, and SPA and CMA are all Volvo too because that was after Ford sold Volvo.
@@markkibbe1802 Yes my P2 S60 is solid 15 years later, I notice the plastics (ex:Airvents) and headliner hold up better than the p3 S60 we have. On the p3 the headliner is coming apart and a lot of plastics are bubbling/falling apart such as the center console chrome finish and all the air vent tabs breaking. All those parts say FoMoCo on them. I also see a lot of junkyard S40s/S80s that also have garbage headliners and broken plastics. I have to say the 3.0 T6 engine has held up very well.
I have a S550 and a Phoenix audio system its a year old now and yours boots up way faster than mine im jelly of course after i bought mine they came out with a udated version lol.but it does change the look of your car for the way better.
Another thing to add to the Pizza Planet Truck... Actually, this might be more fitting for a modern Jurassic Park Explorer!
The Cyclone Engine..is a Mazda based motor that came on a mazda CX-9 and then the Lincoln MKS in 09.. In 2011 introduce the first Mustang to sport the V6 3.7L Duratec/Ti-VCT. FoMoCo bro.
That actually looks really good! I love the carbon as well! Also, can you change the background picture to somethings different besides the S550?
This car went from ancient to modern it 1 video. Insane.
I don’t find the S550 interior to be drastic improvement, more of an evolutionary improvement. The 09 to 10 interior change was more of a drastic improvement, IMO.
agreed, also putting a gt500 wheel in the car make a big improvement, that base wheel make the interor look like junk.
I had this screen for over a year. It held up to my expectations. Netflix, RUclips, spotify, usb storage, maps. Worth every penny. Sadly i parted with my 6 for a newer 8.
almost looking amish with that beard lmao
The lighting 7:21 has David looking like he belongs on Teen wolf 😂 and I cant stop laughing. But im digging the beard man.
you basically just exposed the stash spot in baestang but good video!
One of the things I really like about your channel is you do mods I would do if I had that car. Keep up the awesome work!
I installed one of these into a 2019 Mustang for a SEMA build last year and the quality of the buttons is worse than OEM. Also the terminals in their adapter harnesses were so flimsy that the constant power terminal broke during install...ended up having to remove the unit 3 times before everything worked. Wasn't impressed by the OS or apps either.
They need to add a twist knob because then its gonna be hard to lower or higher volume while driving. when you have the twist knob you dont need to look at a screen to higher or lower the volume. You already know where the twist knob by mind.
Honestly I'm so sick of screens in cars that I'm sad to see the old head unit go lol.
i refuse to add one to a car that doesnt have one.
The premium trim interior was a little better. But yeah, it leaves a lot to be desired. The main reason I traded my '11 GT for an '18 Ecoboost
What fell out of the packaging at 1:28?
okay i wasnt sure if the chrome was gonna seem tacky but it definitely worked in your favor its so nice
I still use CD’s all the time.
same. Still use all my dads and my cds and Listen to cassettes
I like the older GM interface for the silverado and Impala. I still listen to CDs like John Mellencamp and Bruce springsteen or George Strait. I would love to find a head unit where i could listen to CDs, cassettes, Sirius XM, and connect my phone.
I've been looking at these for sooo long for my 14 grabber gt, but I was always on the fence. I might pull the trigger but let us know how it holds up!
I cant wait to see everything when its done
Looks aw4sone David! 👍
About the most real car RUclipsr I know. I subscribed
Giant Screens in Cars are just silly.
It's the future of them though.
Ok boomer
I think it looks dope
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 THIS IS NEXT LEVEL MODS RIGHT HERE!!!!! i cant wait to get one now, definitly need this
Cars with big screens or displays at all are gonna looks so dated in a couple of years.
My heart always feels warm and fuzzy when I get to see Smurrf :)
First for real
@Chris Perez trying hard to get thousand likes for my RUclips fame
Wow, what a difference! That Tesla screen is the bizness! Now you should get the DynaPerformance carbon fiber for the dash!👌
Any update on how the screen is holding up with the temperature being so hot? Great video btw. Keep up the great work!
I installed an aftermarket panel that allowed the use of whatever 7ish in double din I wanted, and turned the HVAC Into a screen. It was pretty nice, and held up well before I sold the car. Look on American Muscle if this one doesn't hold up, I think my pictures are still there.
Excellent upgrade to the Smurf. Nice work
Not really felling the screen but nice carbon center console 👌
I personally prefer the s197 interior as is.. I have the premium trim with the leather and it gives me a modern retro vibe.. The S550s blended in with the crowds
Those are so awesome! Makes the older mustang gts so much more appealing
I installed one in my 2012 mustang, and absolutely love it.
Where did you clip the bottom wires to on the radio?
How's the audio wattage
I get compliments on my interior all the time. You have the base model interior. If you had the premium interior it looks like the 67gt500 interior
11:33 Lmaoooo he instinctively goes to check if its in neutral even though he's not starting the car ahahha
Blue Dude...... but hows the sound quality? I love the upgraded look and would love to move in that direction but I have all Alpine stuff. It sound amazing.... I'm now sure if upgrading to this head unit would sacrifice sound quality? Your thoughts?
I have the 2013 premium 5.0 and I'm gonna do this to mine. That's badass
Need to add that premium gauge cluster to finish the job or if you can find a roush gauge cluster even better
Huge upgrade. I have a premium s550 and kinda like that better.
I love that screen! Going to look forward to getting one for my S550!
THAT LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!
Looks much better!
I do this for a living and I put carbon fiber wrap on my Accord interior trim (ricer I know) but it looks way better than the swirled wood trim
The reason there is so much space in the CD unit is that the older ones had room for 6 CD's . Can't wait to install one in my 2012
The Phoenix unit is nice and it appears from their website it is being revised to include some traditional buttons and knobs. I am happy with the Metra interface and Boss head unit I installed in my 2011, but I get why some folks want to make their ICE car look like a Tesla. I would not be so quick to make fun of the original controls in older cars, I suppose you could not stand driving and looking at the dash and controls in 1965 Mustang. The only reason I changed the head unit in my car was because the SYNC system died, otherwise I was quite happy with the original system. As to the carbon fiber look..........whatever floats your boat. I like the customized interiors that have matching or contrasting colors for the dash, seats, seat belts, etc. Your video was fun to watch. At least your car has the correct transmission. 🙄🤔😯😏🙂
I had a 00 GT so you won't hear me complaining about my 06 GT premium interior !....except for the leather peeling off around the door ! Common issue in 05-09 stangs.
Popular mode = Pop
Pop comes from a word popular ;)
My favorite update was steering wheel carbon pieces, I will consider this on mine.
That dash kit looks amazing, little salty though they don't make any Phoenix kits for the 99-04 mustangs. Would've bought one instantly
I had all that carbon, my Mustang was in the Trufiber booth at AM show every year.
First 3 seconds I thought you were LinusTech. Im obviously tired 😂 Love ur content!
5:21 this is an interesting fun fact. My 05 Mazda 3 as you might know was right in the middle of the era of the Ford Mazda merger, and you'll see the beautiful FoMoCo logo in cursive littered in a bunch of random places. Such as the rear lateral links I had to change out. My car has tons of original parts from late 04. But yeah gotta love Ford Motor Company. I recently had to get ignition coil connectors and since Mazda used a generic Ford designed ignition coil, I could get connectors that would have gone on a Mustang, or an Excursion.
Enhancing the S197 v2. Yep. Well done!
I got a 2013 gtcs with the nav package so already has small touchscreen, just still does look dated, was thinking of trying this out just hoping it’s not to laggy!
Man, in 2006 when I bought my new Mustang GT I thought that interior was the bomb after all of my Fox Body cars, now I have an '18 GT Premium and I actually feels premium. I like the Tesla style screen, I also like knobs so I wonder how it's going to be using the touch screen for all of it. I don't like the taped on cover, other than that the rest looks awesome!
Just ordered some of your car care stuff cant wait to try it!!
I also have that screen in my 2014 mustang! Definitely looks better than factory 😎
I have an 05’ Mustang. The older interior doesn’t bother me at all. Yes, tens of millions of us still own and play CD’s.
That stick on piece looks terrible.
I wrapped all of those piece with 3M carbon fiber wrap.
Also, I put a magnetic mount just above calculator buttons, and I mount a tablet there. I get all of the same android functionality but alot easier to install.
All of the stock HVAC controls are accessible underneath the tablet.
10" tablet fits widescreen
It is good to see Smurf getting love still. Your videos with Smurf cemented my purchase of my Mustang 4 years ago.
I need a torchlight to watch this
The 13-14 with Touchscreen still looks good
That digital panel is and looks amazing!! And so installer friendly.. I wonder if that could be retro fitted to a sn95 ?? I would freak out!!!😱😄😆
Just a heads up, you put the cupholder cover on wrong. you can take the black top part off and the carbon fiber piece replaces it.
