The Germans saw what was considered impossible, the Wehrmacht defeated France in a matter of six weeks, what the Imperial Germany Army was unable to do in four years during World War 1. Even the leadership of the Wehrmacht was surprised. On the other side they started to believe that they were invincible and made mistakes, that led to their downfall.

I enjoyed this episode very much Stefan. It's been very eye-opening to get the German people's perspective. All we usually get is the same old n*zi tripe. To truly understand history we must place ourselves in the culture of the people and the time being studied. I saw a doc where an English crew were filming right after the war. A very angry German woman being interviewed among the ruins of her city actually said, and I quote: "This never would have happened if you had just surrendered." I wont forget that. Kinda says it all.

but there were NO Nazis in Germany in 1945!! :P Soviet troops in eastern Germany 1945 were amused when Germans approached them looking for jobs and dusted off their old communist party membership cards - pre-1933 ofc. They knew full well even most communists had been pro-Nazi up until the war turned against them. there's a clip from The World At War where a G.I. is being bothered by a German woman until he says "i am a Jew" . the woman was silent for a moment and then said "ah, but you are a WHITE Jew".. the G.I. said he had to muster all his powers of self control not to belt her in the mouth ... :P

Stefan, in my country, the United States (aka back to back World War Champ. Aka liberator) a particular strain of wild grain was said to be extinct, however several years ago it was discovered that it in fact is not extinct. As a result, scientists engaged in revisionism by saying that it is not extinct.

when I was a baby boomer kid, every dad on my street had served in the war. My dad was one of the few who was briefly in the navy.; he was a polio survivor who couldn't run or even walk distances, but he talked his way into the navy because he was rehabilitated with swimming. A great grandfather of mine is my closest European ancestor- from the Rhineland, and good with horses, he had the sense to take a job at the Sandy Hook racetrack and emigrated before WW1. (he would have been conscripted into the Kaiser's cavalry!) It's all pretty stupid, especially now there's greater ability to kill and destroy at great distance.

I have to admit that I have never seen an argument as to why so many joined the nationalist cause at the start of the Spanish Civil War that I can look at and go.. "Yeah, I can now understand why". But this, this shows how the Germans were able to get behind the war in a way that is understandable and relatable.

If the British had lived up to their end of the deal and put as many men into France in that first 8 months of going to war as it had in 1914, the German breakthrough in the Ardennes would've been just about impossible due to the Allies having a larger strategic reserve. Because the British sent over a small token force, the French had to commit nearly all their forces to the front instead of holding some back in reserve. There was a lot of resentment at how little the British committed itself to the ground war in Europe in 1940.
The Americans knew this also which is why once a beachhead was secure in the month after D-Day it poured troops into Europe directly from the states as rapidly as possible so that by October it accounted for over 70% of the allied ground contribution to the liberation of Europe and the British army had been reduced to a small support roll in that effort.
The British army was simply too small to play a decisive factor in the outcome of World War 2.

The Nazis always exaggerated the suffering of ethnic Germans. Czechoslovakia and Dresden are other examples. Ethnic Germans suffered at the end and after WW2 in East Prussia, Sudetenland, Silesia and the Volga. My Godson has just applied for German citizenship, through his German Jewish Sudetenland grandmother arriving in England on the Kindertransport. The Poles and people across the Soviet Union suffered so much, and were the largest groups amongst the 50 million + dead.

Still I admire the youtuber here throwing in the topic, its a decent one.

A lot of Frenche troops surrender with more tanks and men than he had. The Germans have also won in 1940 by good tactics and better coorperation between tanks, infantery and airforce, Not by better tanks or more troops. Of course I am not talking here about the moral right to invade other countries just like that.

We know France is almost unanimously designated as the Guilty man.
I see things differently, the culprits are those who claimed that France could -virtually alone- manage to win against Germany.
The balance of power was in 1940 massively in favor of Germany.
In 1939 France’s population stood at 40,000,000 and was the oldest population in the world.
Nazi Germany’s population totaled some 80,000,000.
In 1940 France truly needed a miracle, was France guilty not to get that miracle?
The French inflicted nearly 120,000 casualties in 5 weeks on the germans, and destroyed close to a third of their tanks. Unfortunately a 300 mile german advance was fatal to them, whereas it wasn’t for the USSR.
(The British and the Americans only fought against 20% of the German army in 1944, at a time when it faced supply issues .)
Dunkirk was only possible thanks to an exceptional fighting spirit of French soldiers:
"I can't understand how such brave soldiers, fighting in various places at one against ten
(sometimes even one against thirty), still manage to find enough strength to go on the assault: it's simply amazing !
I find among the French soldiers of Dunkirk the same ardour as that of the poilus of Verdun in 1916.
For several days hundreds of bombers and guns have been pounding the French defences. However, it is still the same thing, our infantry and tanks cannot break through, despite some ephemeral local successes."
" "Dunkirk proves to me that the French soldier is one of the best in the world. The French artillery, so feared in 14-18, once again demonstrated its dreaded effectiveness. Our losses are terrifying: many battalions have lost 60% of their strength, sometimes even more! “
"By resisting about ten days to our forces, which were significantly superior in terms of numbers and resources, the French army achieved a superb feat in Dunkirk that is to be commended. It certainly saved Britain from defeat, by allowing its professional army to reach the English coast."
General Von Küchler commandant of the XVIII army
during the last stand of the french army to cover the british at Dunkirk.
"May 18th 1940: the Führer still worries a lot about the southern flank. he's furious and claims that we take the best path to make the whole campaign fail !
The french troops never stops counter-attacking. May 21st 1940: that day starts in an extremely tense atmosphere: reports indicates a serious pressure on the northern flank of the IVth army. The VIth army faces a solid front. May 22nd 1940: our tanks, that are currently fighting in the south, have met a powerful enemy. Our panzerdivisionen suffer too many losses and attack without being required to. Stress is growing. May 23rd 1940: the losses for the tanks of our ten panzerdivisionen reach 50% !
      The french resistance is fierce."

Already from the beginning, the regular Wehrmacht troops took part in these atrocities. • @Alte.Kameraden
      @Alte.Kameraden 3 года назад +2

There was some resistance but it wasn't on the same scale the Germans Faced in occupied countries. Some of it lasted for years, but you gotta remember, unlike occupied countries by the Germans, the Germans had no hope. So even if people wanted to resist who were they resisting for?
Resistance groups mostly fought to weaken the occupier so someone else could come and save them later, they had no hope/dream of forcing the Germans out. on their own So ask yourself this. "Who was coming to save the Germans from their occupiers?" No one. They had no reason to resist, so even the hardliners who did form some forms of resistance didn't last but a few months to a few years. Even today there is some shadow resistance within Germany, as the Government often does raids on pro Nazi arms stashes now and then over the years, they're rare events but they have happened. So even today, they still exist.
On top of that, a lot of Germans welcomed the peace, even if it might be a harsh one. 6 long years of war, and a country mostly devastated, let alone how nasty the Nazi regime progressively became year after year, peace was peace.
Some of the reactions by the Allies and Soviets toward resistance was also pretty harsh. Combatants caught out of uniform were liable to be shot and executed by the Western Powers, and the Soviets burned down an entire town in response. One case in the West from a German sniper, caused the local American garrison to evacuate the town, and gave orders for the town to be shelled for hours by artillery. No one was going to put up with it in short, and few Germans had reason to go along with it, whether they wanted to resist or not.

Many high ranked Germans couldn't believe their luck during the last weeks of the French campaign.
They had witnessed the four year carnage of 1914-1918, and the hopeless, bloody attempts to break through.
They also faced a French army then that offered fierce resistance at places like Verdun, giving them a great respect for the French. They feared a repeat of the battle of the Marne, in which their panzer division vanguard would be cut off and isolated by a massive suprise French counter attack from the South.
    They shouldn't have worried.

    • @vangorp9056
      @vangorp9056 3 года назад +1

Despite our overwhelming numerical and material superiority, French troops counter-attacked in several places. I can't understand how such brave soldiers, fighting in various places at one against ten (sometimes even one against thirty), still manage to find enough strength to go on the assault:
it's simply amazing !
General Von Küchler commandant of the XVIII
army during the last stand of the french army to cover the british at Dunkirk.
May 18th 1940: the Führer still worries a lot about the southern flank. he's furious and claims that we take the best path to make the whole campaign fail !

Glad to hear the opinions of the other side. The victors write history for their own particular audience and cheerleaders. The dangers of propaganda and ignorance are spelt out loud and clear. If what you hear is controlled by the government and media, then your mind will be twisted in the desired direction. During WW2, those who were not white were not viewed as human, but subhuman. I watched a newsreel about the Pacific theatre. I saw American troops aiming flame throwers into caves and saw hapless Japanese soldiers running out covered in burning napalm writhing and screaming in agony. In the world we live in today they are as human just as we all are, but the American audience probably never saw it like that ( until the living room war of Vietnam). However, in many other parts of the world, that sort of prejudice still exists. Thanks for allowing us to see the other side

Very interesting. Hitler's take on WW2,which he expressed in his 1941 birthday speech, was that "two nations have arisen in Europe--Italy and Germany--which are challenging the world system, which is dominated by the U.S. and England, and the wealth interests who control those two nations." Now conventional mainstream historians dismiss this and say Hitler was the aggressor. BUT,events SINCE WW2 tend to bear Hitler out. Whenever a socialist regime of any sort rears its head anywhere, the U.S. and its allies try to undermine or destroy it. Examples are Vietnam,Cuba,Venezuela,Libya,Iraq,Syria, etc.(The only reason Trump didn't attack Venezuela is because the Cubans sent personnel in to protect their compadre.) The Baath Party of Syria and formerly of Iraq are basically Arab clones of Hitler's party,as I understand it........On another topic, one of the least-known aspects of the Third Reich is the Night Of The Amazons festival in Munich. This yearly festival was designed to showcase the FEMININE side of Nazism, and featured singing and dancing, etcetera, and was capped off by the finale which had local German girls, topless or completely nude, riding atop parade floats drawn by draft horses. Interestingly some amateur film footage of this event has surfaced on RUclips (part of something called the "Romano Archives"). Just type in "Night Of The Amazons In Munich" to see the clip. All the German boys and men in the crowd seemed to have loved it ! lol I'm sure quite a few souvenir photos were taken. The girls on the parade floats are near the end of the clip.

@Murl: I'm not so sure what your point was with your reply.
"Whenever a socialist regime of any sort rears its head anywhere, the U.S. and its allies try to undermine or destroy it. Examples are Vietnam,Cuba,Venezuela,Libya,Iraq,Syria, etc"
This has to do with the Cold War and its aftermath. Furthermore, I do not believe nazis are socialists. Sure, they have some socialist principles, but they deemed socialists as their enemies.
Regarding Britain, I think you'll find this video interesting:

@@HistoryHustle Thank you for your reply, but I disagree. The problem here is that most academics confuse the word "socialism" with Marxism. Socialism is not Marxism. So when you say that Nazis "deemed socialists as their enemies",what you really mean is that MARXIST groups were deemed as enemies, and you're exactly right. Marxist groups werre seen as being controlled from Moscow (see COMINTERN),and also they preached class warfare, which Hitler was adamantly against. The Nazi model for socialism was Oswald Spengler's book "Prussianism And Socialism",in which he posited Prussia as the ideal embodiment of socialist values. :Every man served the state and every man benefitted from the state. Orders were given and orders were obeyed. There was authority and there was obedience to authority. This is Prussian Socialism, and it is illiberal and undemocratic." said Spengler. But let's get away from abstract theory and look at ground-level reality. German researcher Gotz Ally,in his book "Hitler's Beneficiaries",catalogues in exhaustive detail just how much Hitler redistributed wealth on a MASSIVE scale in Germany. Another book on this subject is Leon Degrelle's "Hitler's Social Revolution". Degrelle was a highly-regarded SS officer who was NOT involved in any war crimes. Another excellent book, currently suppressed, and only available from an Australian site,is Lothrop Stoddard's "Into The Darkness". Stoddard was the last Westerner to be allowed into Nazi Germany under wartime conditions, just before the end came for Nazi Germany. He was allowed to go wherever he wanted, and talk to whoever he wanted, with very few restrictions. He came away with a very POSITIVE view of Hitler's accomplishments, despite the fact that he was not a Nazi! The Nazis expanded lunch-breaks to two hours, built millions of affordable housing units, taxed businesses 110%,gave almost-free vacation cruises around the world for 5 dollars, and did in fact democratize the workplace--WITHOUT nationalizing private property. A remarkable feat! And don't forget the Volkswagen Beetle, another idea from Hitler! I run into this same misunderstanding when I talk to Cubans. They always insist---because they've been taught----that Fascism/Nazism are the antithesis of socialism. No matter how much I argue with them it doesn't penetrate. I'll answer your other point later......

The false flag attack Germany mocked up is widely understood and accepted. Germany's aim however was to reclaim past German lands and or expand. Why didnt Britain and France declare War on the Soviets? They too invaded Poland!
And why can at this moment in time Britain and France have vast colonies around the World, but when Germany wanted to bring together Germanic peoples under one Nation, Britain and France have to make it a World War? What was their motive? To protect Poland... i think not.

I'm surprised at the German reaction to the black soldiers.
Conveniently they forgot their own former black colonies and what they did to them.
In an earlier attempt to gain more "Lebensraum" the German Empire undertook a campaign of racial extermination and collective punishment in Deutsch - Südwestafrika, considered the first genocide of the 20th century.
