I was born in Wimbledon in 1970,in 79 family moved to hackbridge, nightingale close, from a young age I was often in carshalton, swimming at westcroft swimming pool, playing football in the park,my mum worked in the woodman pub n wine bar for years, the best years of my live was there,at 49 I live down in Devon now,but I have never or ever will forget my roots,it's still home.
Hi Richard, I just stumbled upon your video. I really enjoyed it, I was born in Carshalton (2 mins walk from the ponds), and when I was 8 we moved to Carshalton Beeches, where I lived until I was 25. A few years I later moved to New Zealand, where I live now. Your video brought back some great memories. New Zealand is a great place, but I do miss the UK very much, so really appreciate you making this video. Cheers. PS: In my view, Carshalton has and will always be in Surrey😀
It's part of the London Borough of Sutton, but a lot of people in the outer London boroughs still use the old county names from before they were swallowed up by 'Greater London' (which was abolished by Mrs Thatcher anyway). So people still refer to 'Bromley, Kent', or 'Romford, Essex', or 'Richmond, Surrey', whatever the bureaucrats tell them.
Honestly these Greater London areas will always be by heart the historic counties in terms of the atmosphere - carshalton is definitely a Surrey vibe and not a London vibe at all
Another excellent video! I fell in love with your old architecture and small towns a long time ago. So watch your videos with great pleasure! Looking forward to the next one!!!
I follow your channel as you've recently been making some great video content on the various 'agendas' going on globally. However, have also been interested in your older productions, such as this one. I was born in Carshalton and lived there for 32 years before moving to Poole in Dorset (10 years) and now Durham (County Durham!) for the last 1.5 years. Still miss my old stomping ground of Carshalton though and hope to go back sometime this year to visit. Great video too and interesting snippets of history.
Many of the gardens in those roads just off the High Street had fruit trees growing in them. I assume the original bigger houses had orchards that got divided up as new developments created the current houses and their smaller gardens. Sadly, most of the trees have been felled as people couldn't be bothered with the apple fall or their maintenance or just wanted lawns without trees getting in the way.
There are still sum pear trees on Grove Street just by the zebra crossing neer Grove park by the little office so no scrumping lol and the sweetest I have ever tasted..and yes I have lived here all my life apple trees pear trees plum trees and cooking apples everywhere and yes I did scrump a lot full belly no sweets needed ... All gone now all replace with Ikea garden's with no wildlife in them.😢
I lived there....and stupidly left for the us..AND DIDN'T HAVE TO..........I want to go home. I used to be the lady with the peanuts for the squirrels and I named a few..they are not all grey.
I live in Carshalton too - the million pound+ houses are all in the south part of the Beeches area (for the area you're in there, you're looking at £850k at the very most for a spacious and attractive 4/5 bed). Prices aren't as steep here as other parts of outer SW London (Richmond, Kingston etc).
That seems a lot to me - I bought my humble Victorian terrace 2 up 2 down for £46,500 - but that was nearly 30 year ago. I don't know how people can afford to buy anything these days.
The Wandle does not start at the ponds and certainly does not flow upstream to Beddington Park ! In fact there are half a dozen statements in this which are entirely wrong.
There is plenty of good reasons why Anne Boleyn may have used the well since it was en route from Carew Manor (Beddington Park) which was owned by Anne's cousin and where her and Henry VIII spent some time. Its half way to Nonesuch Palace at Banstead. A good Well was important en their route between the two . In addition the church was there well before and probably would have drawn some hostelry for passing travelers. I'm not sure why that chap thinks the dates are all wrong since we have proof that Henry visited the Carew Family at that time to meet Anne. The story of the Spring is probably just nonsense since the Spring was there for centuries before her.
I’ve not really been to Carshalton even though it’s only about 15 minutes away - looks like a lovely place (if the traffic could stop!) Also, great photobomb at 7:14 !!
The name 'Nonsuch' of Nonsuch Park in nearby Cheam that you mentioned, was so named because there was None Such like the palace that Henry VIII had built there, I think for Anne Boleyn. The position of the palace is marked with stone markers in the Park, but sadly the building was demolished soon after it was built, and the stone robbed out for making local buildings.
Just discovered your videos - really enjoying them! They're great for people who can't get out and about - almost like doing the walk yourself! My partner & I are lucky and can - we are both keen on walking and local history. Keep up the great work!
I was baptised at All Saints (Mum & Dad at the time evidently felt pressured into paying their dues to the Omnipotent Bearded Sky Wizard!!). As I've just said in one of your other posts, I was obsessed with Local History from aged 5... I still have my drawings of the 'Skull & Crossbones' graves in the All Saints' graveyard that I did in c.1976. The 'skull and crossbone' graves are, if I recall, along the south side of the church. I've not been back there since about 1977. I really must do so!... Me and my sisters probably knew every ancient stone, old spring-outlfow (now long buried and/or dried up!), old local legend, old tree and old 'nook and cranny' within 3 miles of the Wandle north of Butter Hill. I have my scrapbooks of leaves we collected each year from 1972 to 1975 from the UK's largest London Plane Tree (which I think is visible in the background, sadly unmentioned. at about the 2 minute mark). What amazes me is that old Surrey residents, in the 1970s, had "rural" accents... Such accents rapidly died out, it seems, with the generation that expired in the 1970/80s. Now we all sound the same!! P.S. Who is Mya? She looks stunning!!!
What a fascinating life you have led and so pleased to hear about your interest in history from such a young age. You got to love a London Plane! Thanks so much for watching.

Good for you Tony - thanks for sharing you comments.
I loved Carshalton Ponds as a child . The number of cars that ended up in the ponds on a Fri or Saturday night was a regular occurrence.
I was born here.St Helier Hospital. There is a local pub called Anne Boleyn
She used to go from there to another Anne Boleyn pub in Essex.
Yes. Morning.
i was born there too :)

I live in carshalton, and my address still says Surrey 🤔
My birthplace.

That sounds about right.

Oh dear - sorry about that.
Lot's more to see hear, need another one for sure.
There is another :)
Nonsuch palace was named that by Henry VIII as it was so extravagant and there would be ‘none such’ like it
Ah, yes - we mentioned in another video.

What is a photobomb?
Richard Vobes - it’s when someone appears suddenly in the rear of a photo :)
I was born and bred in carshalton but have lived in Australia 🇦🇺 for the past 40+ years
Please a video on Carew manor/academy!
I am not sure where that is but I will have to see if I can do that.
Richard Vobes just around the corner from carshalton in Beddington Park it has so much history! It’s mentioned in your video.
The late actor and hellraiser Oliver Reed once lived in the Orangery.
Oh, I grew up here! I went to school at Benhilton!
Fabulous!
I lived in Carshalton from 1979 to 1988. Whatever happened to the giant female doll that was built into one of the buildings near All Saints?

Oh thanks for the extra information - very cool!

It would have been a small handpumped engine, which could be pulled by men or a horse probably.
It would have been nice to hear from Mya!!
She didn't want to play an active part in the video as it happens.
There's a new gin made in the Surrey Hills. You can Google it. I put in gin from Surrey hills.
Sounds jolly nice.
@@RichardVobes Morning. Yes thank you. It's in the Eve Standard too.
I live in carshalton 😁
Good for you.
Is carshalton a great place to live?
England is very beautiful and intresting I love a lot to England .
So is it South London or surrey?
Surrey. Jut feels like South London.
@@MrHurley61 done my research and it's south London within the boundaries of the historic county of Surrey. 🤦🏻♂️😂
i call it both
It's in south London, but the addresses still have Surrey on them.
Nice video, but needs editing
You must be a millionaire to live here? It's a council estate ffs
