After moving to Scotland from England with my parents a few years ago, it has been a struggle to settle in, more so for personal reasons, but I live about an hour away from Edinburgh and after going a few times it's my favourite city in the UK currently. There's plenty of attractions and shops and the place has such a charm about it.
Hear hear. Live West of Glasgow, been to Glasgow a few times, can't love it. Went to Edinburgh the 1st time during COVID restrictions. Was amazing even with that caveat in place. Literally one of the best cities in the UK.
I am an American who lives outside of Swindon, and honestly, it reminds me of an American city like Chicago, if you’re not from the area. You see people staring at you like they’re in a gang, looking like they’re about to make a move. Causing you to leave the scene for safety reasons, knife crime in Swindon doesn’t help. Graffiti absolutely everywhere even in the city center just makes it more depressing.
Swindon!! You might as well have put Slough. Stratford upon Avon is beautiful and Bristol is fun with plenty of entertainment and good options for eating out.

I spent 3 years in Swindon. Have to say I'm surprised to find it topping the list- unless they only surveyed higher earners, or there's been a massive influx of well-paid jobs. People also used to say don't live in a district beginning with P, and it had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy back then.

Wales has the lowest crime rate because it has a smaller population than Scotland and a significantly smaller population than England. It's better to look at crime rates from a percentage.

An interesting list but for me number one is Norwich for history, low crime and the feeling you are in a confident 'capital' city- with two universities, two cathedrals, a castle, one of the oldest and biggest markets in the UK and a young friendly vibrant population, Norwich is the best!
What is there to do for young people in Salisbury? Everything catered towards young people has been shut off and redirected to Amesbury. Salisbury is a town for geriatrics and tourists now.

I'm been living in England for almost 20 years, I never thought Swindon as the best place to live in UK. UK has many wonderful cities & towns, but Swindon in my opinion isn't. For me Bath, Strafford Avon & Devon are ones of the best places to live in England. United Kingdom in General, I think Wales has the best places, especially Noth Wales. Oxford is very expensive, I live close to Oxford and you have to be wealthy to afford a decent place there. Even when I was working there, I couldn't afford to paid for a decent apartment.
I'm from glasgow. It's got lots of concert venues. And people enjoy socialising at the theatre or the cinema or even see your favourite bands at a concert venue of your choice

Glasgow has totally changed over the past few years. You can safely go out for a night in the city and come to no harm. It's a far cry from it's 'No Mean City' days
who told them there was no crime in Plymouth, They obviously haven't picked up a paper ever. Also I definitely wouldn't put Wolverhampton on this list while it is not the worst place I have been its definitely not one of the best either.
If you listen to the BBC, you will occasionally hear journalists refer to parts of Yorkshire as being in the North East, even as far down as Hull and the Humber and you won't ever hear any arguments or corrections. Owing to the fact that the eastern coastline does not run north-south, 'North East' is a problematic description for use in England because Northumberland and Durham lie well west in terms of longitude of much of the rest of the country (including the coast of Yorkshire). For example, Newcastle-upon-Tyne is on the same line of longitude as the West Midlands! We really need some new terminology but the modern-day name 'Northumbria' won't do either as it literally means 'land north of the Humber' which Northumberland and Durham technically are but not immediately north of it. It should be 'Northteesia'.
I did part of my PhD in Oxford and... yeah, it was very expensive. I also found the city quite boring after a few months (?) Strangely, I lived in Canterbury too, which is smaller, but liked it more there, it was a lovely place! Perhaps I would have added Bath to the list.
I did start to wonder how serious this was when they started off by saying Cambridge was a nice place to live and reasonably priced! It might look nice to all those foreign tourists maybe they should venture out to some of the housing estates. And as for Swindon being number one, have they ever been there?
My sister lived in Cambridge. It's such a bubble where the student population couldn't be less representative of the regular locals, it also has an 'off' vibe I can't quite put my finger on. Not to mention _extremely_ expensive without the supporting salaries. Never liked the place. Cambridgeshire itself is also just plain weird and genuinely freaks me out, where even Norfolk doesn't.
Thanks for the laugh at the end. Swindon is surrounded by beautiful places but that's it. Everyone leaves swindon to shop as the town centre is desolate with only shops like the Pound Shop and Primark - could have been better but the Council don't like making improvements.
I live and work in Plymouth and it's a nice city and I'm glad it got some love. That being said, if the writers also used towns/Cities that have been bizarrely left out then this list would be rather different. Places like, Bristol, Exeter, Topsham, Bath, Aberystwyth, Cardiff etc.. I would be curious to see what metrics they used to measure this top ten.
I spent a year in Plymouth back in 2003-4, so before the development of the new shopping centre. I enjoyed it. A rare place where you can choose between city, country and coast in a matter of minutes. Especially enjoyed regular trips across the Tamar Bridge.
We lived in Plymouth 50yrs ago. Argyll and Sutherlanders were billeted there. Best place on earth to live at the time. Not to mention the safest. We lived in a house called 'Sungates'.
It depends where in Wolverhampton. You have got really lovely places. Unfortunately the city centre is a disgrace. It has so much potential though. People are overall friendly. People make a place :) Let's not judge people by the cover sometimes.
@@rabiattoyin3113 You have got lovely places like Wightick Manor, Bantock Park, Penn, a theatre, an art Gallery ( it is not Paris or London of course but it is quite pleasant), Saint Peter Church, an hospital etc. Not far from Wolverhampton, you can take a bus to visit the Walsall Gallery ( free of charge) with paintings from Delacroix, Picasso, Gaugin, Matisse etc It is clean, spacious with a souvenir shop with a cafe near by. Wolverhampton It is about 20 minutes by train from Birmingham, you can take the tramway if you prefer ( it s a bit bit cheaper than the train). As Wolverhampton is in the Midlands, you have got easy access to Telford, Stafford, Shrewsbury, London, Manchester, Nottingham etc. The city is surrounded by lovely villages like Albrighton, Bilbrook etc : easy access by bus and trains. You have got also two big parks: East Park and West Park. Both being a short distance from the city centre. A cinema : the Lighthouse with regular Meetups and an excellent selection of films, cultural meetings etc. The city centre is a bit of a disgrace like many cities in England but there is potential and things are getting better. I heard it used to be a much better place ( a long time ago) with House of Fraser which closed a couple of years ago. The city centre is not the poshest place on hearth but people are usually friendly and helpful ( never had any problems). There is a Mark and Spencer, a Sainsbury ( a bit far from the city center though), and some regular shops you usually find in any city in the UK. There is a tramway from the city which goes to Birmingham as well.
Despite Swindon long being home to one of my favorite bands, XTC, a true challenge of living there would be dealing on a daily basis with all the nerve-racking roundabouts, even mini-roundabouts nestled within larger round-abouts.
Since neither I, nor someone I know, have ever met anyone from Swindon, it must be true that this is the best place to live: people simply don’t want to leave their precious town!

Plenty of discontent among the viewers of this video, I must say. It's all down to personal choice I suppose and will find much disagreement. By the way, Swindon is to the East of Bristol, not west 8:38. Yes, I wouldn't put Glasgow, Aberdeen or Swindon in my top 10; whilst Oxford and Cambridge are rather too focused on the obvious.
I agree that it is down to personal choice. I grew up in Edinburgh and enjoyed it up to the age of 25, when I left but I wouldn't move back there now. I know Aberdeen and Glasgow fairly well and personally would rate both fairly highly.
Wolverhampton is officially listed everywhere as one of the most violent, dead end places to live in the UK. It’s also highly ‘multicultural’ meaning you have all of the segregated and opposing communities and associated difficulties that come with medieval religion. Terrible place.
Well put. I live in the better end of town. But it's cheap to buy a house and excellent for getting to work in neighbouring areas of Britain. The only really well paid jobs are the doctors there and they take up most of the new wealth. Unfortunately what's happening is these jobs are now being filled by nice law abiding people from around the world. But they are the nicer bunch. But affluence is now being passed to foreign nationals. The private schools are full of foreign nationals children. I know this for a fact.
Some of the places on this list have very expensive property prices, notably Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Cambridge and Oxford. I grew up in Edinburgh and, although it has many things going for it, there are just as many grotty areas away from the city centre as anywhere else. Different people will want different things and I know that the Magic Roundabout in Swindon is a wonder of the transport age (although I prefer the one in Hemel Hempstead). I would have said Nottingham might have justified inclusion and possibly Newcastle, as well as some of further places others have already mentioned.
Yep, also grew up in Edinburgh and now live elsewhere. I now feel very out of place every time I go back, that and the sort of lifestyle I enjoyed as a child is now totally out of reach despite me earning more than my parents did. And some of it is really horrible. It's just not home anymore. It's also very much like London in that it's at its best when you're young and unattached - now that I'm 35 and seeing someone, the city just doesn't hold the same appeal.
I believe Nottingham goes down a few pegs for the simple reason that it's a mafia capital and has high crime levels. But job opportunities are not as bad as some and it has work travel opportunities as it sits on the M1. Anything M1 will always be vibrant work wise.
Top tip. Always, and I mean always, stay away from areas that are described as "cosmopolitan". It is very similar to an area being "culturally enriched". It's not what you think it means.
In my experience "cosmopolitan" is used sarcastically. Much like "desirable" is just a term that means the locals have all left and nobody can afford a home.
There are any number of beautiful places to live in the UK but at what cost? Born and raised in London with employment close by made it easy but come retirement you would need to seriously adjust your thinking. And also York being safe… because of its walls! 😂

After moving to Scotland from England with my parents a few years ago, it has been a struggle to settle in, more so for personal reasons, but I live about an hour away from Edinburgh and after going a few times it's my favourite city in the UK currently. There's plenty of attractions and shops and the place has such a charm about it.
It is a lovely city
Hear hear. Live West of Glasgow, been to Glasgow a few times, can't love it.
Went to Edinburgh the 1st time during COVID restrictions. Was amazing even with that caveat in place.
Literally one of the best cities in the UK.
Moved from Scotland to England but can’t beat Edinburgh. Great during the day and amazing at night for a good drink

Strstford
Amazed at the inclusion of Wolverhampton and Swindon.
Especially when Dudley was in the top 10 boring places to live in UK and Wolverhampton is not a million miles from Dudley.
I'm more shocked that Glasgow somehow managed to make this list, it's an utter and absolute shit hole

When I visited there forget abour Miracle Junctions but the Weatherspoon had like a proper Library 🎉

Swindon was the first town I ever visited where walking down the high street I literally forgot where I was it was so indistinctive.
I don’t trust this video because i’m from Glasgow and yes it’s a good place to live with the food scene so large and friendly people - but the salary average is £29K? Seems a bit high

An interesting list but for me number one is Norwich for history, low crime and the feeling you are in a confident 'capital' city- with two universities, two cathedrals, a castle, one of the oldest and biggest markets in the UK and a young friendly vibrant population, Norwich is the best!

Wolverhampton isn't great, but neighbouring Walsall makes it look like Monte Carlo.
York is not in the ‘north east’ of England, it’s in North Yorkshire. Big difference. 🙄
Geographically speaking it IS situated in the north east of Yorkshire. the video should have made that clear.
Both are true,aren't they?
Oxford is a good place to live. I live in London but I’v visited before and it’s actually a nice place

Hello 👋
Wolverhampton is officially listed everywhere as one of the most violent, dead end places to live in the UK. It’s also highly ‘multicultural’ meaning you have all of the segregated and opposing communities and associated difficulties that come with medieval religion. Terrible place.
I hate Islam as well
Really Informative.John
Wolverhampton 🤣🤣🤣 I used to live just outside Wolverhampton, and worked in it, and it's an absolute dive!!!!
Yeah this man’s trying to get people faded
Yup went there last year after several decades -I was shocked!
"Cultural melting pot" = chamberpot
Nice video 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
