    Still remember this match and I skipped school only for this match.. i was so nervous, anxious, hyped, shouting, ball sweating, swearing, peeing eeeeeverything. This match has it all the drama, the intensity, the rollercoster and they pushed each other.. fighting fire with FIRE!!!
    But at the end of the day Serena is.. S.E.R.E.N.A! 🐐🐐🐐🐐

    When you watch matches like this, it’s amazing to see how much Serena improved from 2005-2016 where she really cut back on unforced errors

      By the time of 2007, pretty much all her main rivals had retired (Graf, Hingis, Capriati, Henin, even Seles and Clijsters).
      It's easy to look good when you don't have much competition.

      @@fundhund62 Serena’s rivalries changed over time… She had many wins that weren’t necessarily a walk in the park post 2007…. her rivalry with Elena Dementieva, Victoria Azarenka particularly intensified…

    This match is where it started with Sharapova mental issues when playing Serena. I never followed tennis in 2005 but in 2007 when they played in the final at the Australian Open Sharapova didn't look confident could tell from the first point and after seeing this match after 2007 could see why she is not confident playing Serena.

      The intensity and near-perfect play that Serena produced during that 2007 final was unbeatable by any player, then or now.

      Agreed. Serena lived in Maria’s head forever after this one. I always think that this match is where Serena officially made the statement to Maria “you will never beat me again”. And then 2007 is when she repeated that statement in her face with a megaphone 📢

      Sharapova sneaked in at Wimbledon. After that, it was downhill. Serena took her out.

      @@krishnakumar2390 Sharapova admitted to using Meldonium, a substance that had been banned for professional athletes a few months before she failed a screening. She had been using it for years, claiming it was a preventive measure for health concerns related to her heredity. The ITF report that was issued after she her appeal was scathing on both the scope of Sharapova's use of Meldonium and the supposed therapeutic benefits she was claiming. Go read it for yourself.

    Serena & that giant frying pan 113 in racquet. UGH. 😂 She and Venus won a lot with those big racquets too! Everybody was certain the "Russian takeover" was happening. Serena stopped them in their tracks and they could never take it. Especially Maria.

    This is what people pay to see. Two of the finest players on the tour playing great tennis. Two opposing forces that despise each other finding ways to beat the other and taking the crown. This is what tennis is about.

      Yeah. There is something about these kinds of grudge matches that fits tennis very well.
      Lendl - McEnroe, Becker - Agassi, Federer - Djokovic, Seles - Graf, Hingis - Williams sisters, Serena - Sharapova.
      So many great memories.

    Current players just give up. Swiatek in third sets against ostapenko etc just give up. Dont change strategy etc. And she is considered as best thing ever by her cult

    Sharapova been on drugs and I knew it. This high quality intense match it was like she was not even phased at all.. cheaters never win and I will go to my grave saying if that would have happened to serena they would have stripped her of her titles..

      Serena was one of the most surprise tested players ever on tour, like they wanted her to be on drugs so bad yet she retired without ever failing or missing a single test.

    Serena = Relentless
    Sharapova = Resilient (even tho she was using an illegal banned substance for her health conditions doing this time and her strength was powerful I must admit, but she was never this strong again after she was suspended, however she still was a good player after she got busted, just never could beat Serena after that)

      She only really messed up on the first match point. The other two Serena saved with outright winners.

      Those were second serves.

      @@dosensadif6585 They were still pretty good second serves. 150 and 151 kmh, or 93 and 94 mph. It’s not like she double faulted. She still had a good chance to win either point. Serena was just too good.
