This was the at the stage where Serena wasn’t particularly motivated at tournaments outside the slams, YEC and Miami. But she was certainly hellbent on beating Sharapova in this match ! Against most other opponents I doubt she would have been so pumped up for a Charleston QF.
One of the few sets Sharapova won in that span of all those losses that I almost forgot about. She actually did not play bad this match, Serena just played better

So true. And the Queen will be playing at Wimbledon and I know she can do it, but she has to know it. And I hope Federer will be at Wimbledon as well and I’m wishing him the best too. They both still have a couple more Grand Slams inside, but they have to BELIEVE, and like the Nike symbol Serena wears: JUST DO IT!!

@@justtennischannel How was she humiliated exactly? It was a 6-4 6-4 loss and Serena had a thigh injury that bothered her for most of the clay season.

They both bashed the hell from the ball, even tough it was clay. :D Sharapova was having SP in the 1st set and could have won the match in two sets, but really Serena did everything to never lose again to her.

I freaking miss the Queen
These are the types of matches you get when you have top players committing to regular WTA events. Matches where top players face each other and build rivalries (and I do know this particular match-up was no a real rivalry :)). It's what helps to fill up the stands. Something that is totally lost on today's WTA.

Yes Michael Joyce said "you have to believe you're going to beat this .... girl" clearly about to refer to Serena as a man. Sharapova to her discredit laughed when he said "I almost slipped up there".

@@nathangraham1760 How do you know what he was going to say? It could have been one of 3 things: female dog, man or ni**er…we don’t know but it was caught on tape and it wasn’t a nice thing he was about to say.
This was one of the very few matches these two played that Maria could've (and should've) won but as we all know, the majority of their match-ups is all Serena.
Maria is no match for Serena.
If it wasn’t for Serena, Sharapova would have ruled and reined over the WTA. But Maria was never as good as Serena! But the News Media built up a rivalry that never was, because the Queen was so much better!
Nah. Sharapova couldn't even dominate when Serena was out of the game with injuries. She was a good player who probably overachieved in her career. She played a gutsy match at Wimbledon '04 and she couldn't live up to the hype.
I sometimes wonder what went through Serena's head when dealing with someone like Sharapova. She owned her in the head to head, was so much more successful, had such a bigger impact on the tour, yet she ranked second to her in sponsorships and deals. There's got to be a sting there, and rightly so.
@@deedledave9826 Richard tried to prepare the girls for racism. Of course, parents can’t shield you 100%. Most of the pain was from fans and media of your own country. On the flip side, Maria wasn’t born here, but she was treated special by the media and fans. She never had to prove herself. But Serena will never convince some that with extremely hard work from age 4 with Richard being the primary reason for her success. But Maria never lived up to the hype and, she failed the drug test. And even though Serena passed every test, her standard is, you’re guilty, until proven innocent! And company endorsements still tries to measure everything by the European standards, but it’s slowly changing!
@@marjorjorietillman856 Interesting points. It's interesting too how the media presented the two. Serena was a naturally gifted athlete (true), whereas Sharapova had a strong work ethic. There's an assumption there that Serena didn't work hard to get towhere she was, whereas Sharapova did. You see it a lot with black athletes and how they are presented as just naturally athletic, as though their gifts haven't come from hard work and determination.
Also, I'm not American hehe, so it's not my media doing the damage. It is interesting to see how warmly the Williams sisters were received in other countries, whereas there was always a bit of an edge with a lot of the American crowds. It's true, their toughest audiences were from their own country.

Maria couldve won 6-3, 6-4, sadly Maria seemed to ran out of juice she had in the first 2 sets, Serena was far too strong
Serena is a much better athlete than Maria. That is why Maria chose to cheat. It was the only hope she had.
It’s ok. To 99% of the human population Maria is more doable. That matters a lot more after their careers end.

I miss the intensity of serena-sharapova matches, yes Serena dominated the head-to-head but a lot of their matches were really high quality. Enjoyed watching them both
