    HOW DAVENPORT LOST THIS MATCH IS BEYOND ME!! Honestly this just shows how mentally tough Serena is! She was being thoroughly outplayed for a set and a half but she found a way. Serena is truly the GOAT she’s one of the only players that I have full confidence that even on her off days she has a really good chance of winning!

      Because Davenport was never built to go a long, three set match against a Williams sister. Same reason she lost to Venus in Wimbledon final the same year. With her inferior athleticism compared to them, her only chance was to put those two away early

      Lindsay had a tendency to talk herself out of winning. She'd had a long semi-final but I'm sure she could have put up more resistance in the final set. I felt that she convinced herself that her only chance was to win in two sets, and as soon as she didn't she just gave up. That attitude was the difference between three slams and about a dozen which she could have won with her talent.

      What most don't know is that Serena sustained a back injury before her 3rd rd match and somehow fought against quality opponents and her injury to win the tournament.
      If you notice in this clip you will hear the commentators mention Serena doesn't look comfortable, they even said she still doesn't look comfortable. If Serena wasn't playing with an injury in this tournament would some of her matches have gone 3 sets? Who knows.
      I think the question is how did Davenport lose to a injured Serena and the question after that is how did a injured Serena win the entire tournament?

    Love them both. Lindsay was never a great mover on the court, but she is one of the purest ball strikers you will ever see. The 2005 Wimbledon final between her and Venus is one of my all-time favorite matches.

  • @willybeama1
    @willybeama1 Год назад +10

    I love Serena but I was shocked Davenport didn’t win this. Serena fought back and Davenport mentally backed down in frustration. Davenport was super talented but always struggled to find the fighter within her. If you could get on top of her for any length of time, she would mentally break. The hardest part was getting on top of her because her game was rock solid when she was calm. Serena, also super talented, never ever mentally broke. She was always fighting until the last point no matter what.

    I felt sorry for Lindsay she didn't win at least one of two matches: this and wimbledon to venus. She played so well in 2005, was nr. 1, and think the best that year, also in those two matches (altho the venus match was really a tie in level).

  • @onetruepower1303
    @onetruepower1303 2 месяца назад +1

    I really thought Davenport was going to win this match initially. Because Serena injured her back before the 3rd round of this tournament, so I thought she was going to lose every match after the back injury though I still had hope that she would win. She really amazed me in this tournament, to win while being injured against quality opponents is so hard to do but Serena found a way.
    Because of how pure Davenport's ground strokes are and how consistent she can be and her tennis smarts, I wanted Serena to win but she was up against an experienced quality opponent so I thought that maybe she didn't have anything left. But Serena really showed me in this match that her will to win against all odds is 2nd to none.

    Seriously I thought davenport was going to win before Serena took that medical break in the middle of the second set with davenport winning the first set and it was almost even in the second set at that point. Davenport had two chances to add to her grandslam singles titles tally in the two preceding slams the Wimbledon 2004 and US Open 2004. In both games she lost to 17 year old Sharapova and a inexperienced kuznetsova respectively after winning the first set. But here she played really well to beat Molik and dechy to reach the finals. Till that break she was on course to win but After that break a storm came and rolled past davenport in no time.

      You made a small error, Dokic didn't play AO from 2002 to 2006. Lindsay beat her in 2001. in "the most famous first round". She beat Natalie Dechy in the semis, I think you thought about her.

    Both Graf and Hingis succumbed in straight sets to Davenport when she played this kind of tennis in slam finals. Not Serena… Serena is the top player with the best WL record vs Davenport

  • @urbanillustrated
    @urbanillustrated 6 месяцев назад

    Lindsay wasn't successful in grand slams overall. She must be the only player to have ended more times the year as number 1 (4) than grand slam titles (3). The first record is much more comparatively impressive than the latter. I mean players like Kerber (awesome hall of fame player but no where near Davenport if you ask me) have 3 slams. But i think only Serena, Steffi, Martina N., have finished more than 4 times as nr. 1 (in newer times)

  • @nestorvilla3605
    @nestorvilla3605 2 года назад +2

    Serena in this match was being far surpassed, Lindsay Davenport was practically going over her like a steamroller and Serena pretended to be injured so that her rival would relax and think that she did not need to play at the top against an injured rival and that is how Davenport loses concentration and then loses confidence when seeing how Serena is not injured, but it was too late Serena's big trap had hurt !!
    Serena is a cheater, she always was and has been like that, like in the match against Jennifer Capriati at Wimbledon, Serena pretended to have an upset stomach, to break her rival's rhythm in at a critical moment, at the US Open also against Capriati and against Naomi Osaka arguing with the chair umpire to damage the momentum of his rival, also against Justin Henin at Roland Garros, what a pity that to win he has to cheat and resort to dirty lies like these!
    Shame on her!!

    • @alexalterman2474

      You can tell Serena is injured by her service motion. Davenport didn’t even say sorry for the let point she won. She always had a bad attitude on court. Davenport flopped in 3 set finals due to her poor movement. Don’t blame that on Serena. Serena threw up on camera during the other match. Stop being bitter she’s the greatest of all time.

      You dare to bring up Capriati...honestly?! She blatantly admitted after the match that she knew some of those balls were clearly in, but she chose to say nothing or award Serena the point since 'she also deserved a little luck sometimes'.
