My All time favorite tennis match.....It had all the essence to be the greatest tennis match ever be it the Stage, the legendary players, the come back,the drama, the quality of the match, length of the match and most of all a William sister in it :) ..

Love both players. One of the best grand slam finals of all time. Davenport was so close to victory. Venus played some fearless points in the crucial moments that brought her victory. Well done Venus.

I remember watching this as a teenager, I was so nervous when Davenport had a championship point. But I was so impressed with Venus' mental toughness to save that match point and fought on to win the title, I was so happy for her!

There was a point that was like 21 strokes that was epic. The highlights missed that.
I was 14 watching this in my living room with my step mom with popcorn I never been so nervous on edge of my seat both us if anybody ever questions Venus mental toughness, they should watch this match. It was like watching Serena. The both of them had it when they really wanted it those were the days like it was yesterday, cherish the moment.
The best forehand(Davenport) vs the best backhand(Venus) and awesome match

Lindsay certainly hit fewer errors than Venus on the forehand - but Venus hit more forehand winners than Davenport.
on the backhand, they are a lot closer in total number of winners, which is typical of their matches. Davenport's backhand was the more reliable of her groundstrokes - she hit relatively few errors and she could do absolutely anything off that wing: huge range of crosscourt angles, heavy down-the-line shots, beautiful topspin lob, magnificent feel on passing shots ... and frequently devastating on return.
it's noticeable that Venus a lot more to Lindsay's forehand for long stretches of this match, keeping away from the forehand.

@@foundgrace82 exactly . People don’t realize how long Venus has been fighting with her body. She was a teenager struggling with consistency and stamina. Venus was part of so many semi finals and quarter finals for GS in 98/99 but she couldn’t close the matches . It was Serena winning that gave her the push .if venus didn’t have the illness she would have far more GS on all surfaces .

This is the best match between Lindsay and Venus. In the early years of their rivalry things were a bit chippy and catty, but this match really showed the maturity not just of their games but their personalities. It was a joy to watch. Shame that one of them had to lose it.

Tracy Austin should just have done her job professionally. I am sure Lindsay would not have held that against her. Lindsay was a great personality and player , she played very well but she lost this match. I recall most media outlets the next day reporting like Lindsay had won.

I remember watching this in 2005 and the quality was excellent. How in the world did they let the quality of the images degrade so much over time? I wish there was a way to watch this in better quality.

If there was 1 player who had their career severely altered y both Williams Sisters (and not just 1 sister a la Maria Sharapova) it has to be Lindsay.
All of her GS F losses are to them (3 Venus, 1 Serena).
While she has a respectable overall H2H against Venus (14-13 Lindsay), Venus always beat her when it mattered. Was 4-10 against Serena.
She faced Serena 4 years straight at USO from 1999-2002 and lost all but 1. The one time she did win (2000), she got to the Final, just to lose to Venus.
She was up in both 2005 GS Finals--up a set against SErena at AO and had match point here. Lost both.
Girl just couldn't catch a break when it came to these 2.

yes that's true, I'm saying that Venus is, was capable of winning just as many slams, Serena admits that Venus has a hard time playing her because Venus also wants Serena to win. but Serena has no problem wanting to beat Venus. it shows in their matches. the only match that I saw when Venus looked at Serena as any other opponent with no fear was the 2008 Wimbledon final, and maybe the 2005 nasdaq 100 quarter final.

For an official channel this is a very poorly edited 'highlights' video. There's more footage of players strolling to the baseline, double faulting and general camera panning than there is of actual rallying.
I think this is the one match that Lindsay will always remember that she should have won. How many chances did she have?
Except for a match point lindsey was 8 times only two points away from the victory.

@Illya Kuryakin mmmm did I say most technical? No the best matches aren't always the ones with the most winners. This match had a hell of a lot of baggage for both players. The drama was amazing. The outcome quite unpredictable. It took many twists and turns. And Venus' build into the match was fabulous to watch. Wonderful match. Stand by what I said one of the best ever for me

Davenport can hit so flat into the corners
I saw match on live TV that night. It was a see saw battle. When Lindsay won the first set and kept leading in the second set, I was a nervous wreck. I kept changing channels coz I couldn't watch. Obviously, I rootef for Venus, but my heart bled for Lindsay. I wanted both players to win. What an agony for me to watch Lindsay lose after playing so well. This final is one of the greatest women's finals in Wimbledon along with the 1970 finals with King and Court.

Lindsay deserved more Majors
So why didn't she win more majors? Who or what was stopping her?
I personally still prefer 00' Venus vs Hingis, 08' Venus vs Serena, and 95' Graf vs Sanchez over this one in terms of all-court game. But Venus, despite from being her best in 05', played with a champion spirit from QF vs Pierce till the end.
