Which Is Worse: Marijuana or Alcohol? | Dr. Daniel Amen

- One of the most common things people want to know is whether alcohol or marijuana is worse for your brain and overall health. The scientific evidence and the brain imaging work at Amen Clinics show that neither one is good for you. Alcohol is not a health food, and marijuana is not an innocuous substance. But is one of them more damaging than the other?
At first glance, it might seem that alcohol does the most damage to our brain health and general well-being because it is more widely used. Over 85% of American adults say they’ve consumed alcohol at some point in their lives, and nearly 70% say they’ve had a drink in the past year, as reported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Compare that to just 18% of Americans who said they used marijuana in 2019, according to the CDC. Although not as widespread, the harmful effects of marijuana on the brain may be greater. Let’s take a closer look at some of the worst consequences of drinking and marijuana.

Lol, idk where u heard that
Nobody dies from just consuming Marijuana unless it's related to lung issues or just things where you just shouldn't be putting any foreign material in your lungs and certain medical conditions and such and I have known some people to get delirious or defensive but never blatantly violent
True, nobody has ever died from marijuana. But it can turn you into a complete idiot and a total loser if you abuse it

People need to stop pretending weed is completely harmless. I say that as someone who uses it everyday. All drugs need to be respected
Absolutely the post modern view of weed is very dangerous because people treat it like a toy. It’s ruining more lives than any of us could imagine.
What's so harmful about weed aside from the mechanism of use (i.e burning) which can vary?
@CaesarAugustus. It accelerates molecular cell death, and it reduces the efficiency of the frontal cortex in the brain pretty massively
@@SpaceboyBilliards the only info I’ve seen connecting marijuana with cell death is research discussing marijuana’s anti-cancer properties through its promotion of cell-death in tumor cells. Other than that, the “it kills brain cells” trope is a myth rooted in a government study that suffocated monkeys with gas masks pumping marijuana smoke into their lungs; their brain cells died from lack of oxygen, not the marijuana itself.
As for the prefrontal cortex, I mean, obviously getting high will change your state of mind, but research has shown that even heavy users show similar efficiency results as non-users if they abstain.

@@sentinal0291 don't vouch for marijuana.... Everything that intoxicates is bad for your over-all health
They both do the same to me equally. I just went sober and never looked back
I used both. Marijuana threw me into serious depression and that’s not exactly an anecdotal story. I went on the classic “what if I changed this about myself” route, which is as bad as booze amplified emotions. It’s just hitting a different emotional center. Marijuana is slightly less dangerous than booze, but only slightly.

My girl and I are much more connected. I can communicate again. I can focus and understand things again. My creativity is back. It’s mind blowing to me. I always referred to it as my “medicine” and thought that as long as I stopped pills and alcohol I’d be okay. But that wasn’t true. I got so closed off to the world. States of psychosis and depression horribly. I smoked all day though. I promise it’s not good for anyone dealing with trauma or mental health problems. I wouldn’t say it’s horrible. It’s obviously better than other substances. But it’s worth a try. Give it 30 days no weed and watch what you accomplish. I’m so happy where I’m at right now. Exercising daily again! Eating right! I’m able to use my brain again. Cognitive function IS WHAT MATTERS in this life. Is it not? I won’t fool myself any longer.

Typical stoner response. Doctor tells you how marijuana ages you more than alcohol and you say “derrrrr Willy Nelson is 90 years old” lay off the pipe man
@davidtesta157, He said "in that study, marijuana was worse."
I'm not arguing one over the other, but he made a point of clarifying that in the "which drug ages you more" argument, the answer, "marijuana does" was the result for THIS study.
It is for this reason that we perform multiple studies with as many subjects as possible. One study isn't definitive.
Lol, do you think you get the kind of hospital care, knowledge, and availability to nutrition that Willie Nelson (one of the elites) gets? I think not. Also the weed he grew up smoking was far cleaner then the bastardized shit that available today. If you dont understand whats happening to weed, you should study the history of tobacco
@@davidtesta157 stoners are so annoying “b b but what about alcohol how dare you insult my precious weed what about alcohol alcohol is way worse and socially expectable it’s so unfair!!😡😡😢😢” obviously its more “healthy” to smoke weed then to drink alcohol, however, pretty much everybody has tried alcohol and most people are not alcoholics, try weed, you like it, you’re most likely gonna become a stoner, and then you generally turn into someone who doesn’t care about anything, turns lazy and lives in la-la land. Doesn’t happen to the overwhelming majority of people that drink alcohol from time to time.
Day three of no weed after 7 yrs daily use. Feel like I'm waking up from a deep dream. Nichiren Buddhism is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism based on the teachings of the 13th-century Japanese monk Nichiren. This form of Buddhism emphasizes the Lotus Sutra as the most important Buddhist scripture, believing it to contain the ultimate truth of the Buddha's teachings.A central practice in Nichiren Buddhism is chanting the phrase "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo." This chant, also known as the daimoku, can be broken down into its components to understand its significance:Nam: Derived from Sanskrit, meaning "devotion" or "dedication."Myoho: "Myo" means mystic or wonderful, and "ho" means law. Together, they represent the Mystic Law, which is the essence of life and the universe.Renge: Means "lotus flower." The lotus blooms in muddy water, symbolizing purity and the potential for enlightenment amidst the challenges of everyday life.Kyo: Means "sutra" or "teaching." It refers to the Lotus Sutra, the ultimate teaching of the Buddha according to Nichiren Buddhism.Chanting "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" is believed to bring about profound spiritual benefits and personal transformation. Practitioners chant to tap into their inherent Buddha nature, overcoming challenges and creating value in their lives and the lives of others. This practice aims to achieve happiness and enlightenment for oneself and others, reflecting the interconnectedness of all life.

I am a recovering alcohol and current marijuana user. There is no comparison. I believe your study does not include those who met untimely ends because of alcohol. So, if you die of old age, you are likely to live longer drinking than smoking. But drinking does so much worse to the rest of the body, not to mention drunk driving deaths and other violent deaths caused by alcohol, you are highly unlikely to live long enough to die of old age while drinking, while marijuana users have just that to look forward to, even if we have to go a few months before the old age drinkers. They were lucky to get here where for us it is par for the course.
The answer: For the individual and for society, alcohol is worse.
I'll choose a pothead friend over a drunk friend any day. Potheads usually have a good circle of friends and family. Drunk friends annoy the hell out of everyone.

I started smoking regularly about 7 years ago when I left the military to pursue education. It’s not good on the lungs and certainly has potential for addiction. Regardless, I smoked throughout college and obtained a CS degree. Now I write software from home baked with no social or financial issues. Not really sure where I’d be had alcohol been my vice of choice.
Switch to edibles if they work for you. Might as well take only the brain aging effects and skip the lung effects

I used to be addicted to weed. I couldn't go to sleep without it, I had to smoke when I woke up because I was more sensitive to stimuli and anxiety, I ate more junk food, and my energy levels were down. Ive never felt better since I stopped smoking weed. I tried all weed too. I drink once in awhile and that's perfect for me. Usually it's two or three drinks and I'm buzzed and ready to go home lol. ❤ Once a year I get totally wasted and I make sure I stay safe. For those reasons, I choose alcohol because I can regulate. I don't like hanging out with people that smoke weed. Rarely do they seem like their energy meets mine. They are idk dumb lol. Or want to focus on a specific task. Idk that's me and my experience. It could be ok for others maybe but probably it's best to stay sober most days. ❤

As a guy who is sober for a year now, can confirm they are equally bad, many people drink around me and are stupid and annoying, on the other hand people that smoke become paranoid and dumb and while being dumb they overthink some things. Well I mean, it is a question. It’s SAFER but it doesn’t mean safe per se. In my 20’s I was all “rah rah, weed all day everyday”..but I noticed my depression worsened when high significantly more and more often. Plus that paranoia and anxiety. Ugh. I tossed it all down my toilet one day

After many years of daily stoning(started @12yrs old, I’m 25 currently) I finally suffered from a major psychotic episode recently that nearly put me in the hospital and I almost lost everything. Those were consuming mostly cannabis (75% of all alternative consumption) when they were taught from a young age they were criminals, abnormal, made to feel guilty, denied equal protection under the law and the right to compete with alcohol druggies in the workplace.
Did you account for this generational stress and anxiety applied by a alcoholic and codependent leadership from every sector of society who rejected those?
10s of millions of Americans are strung out on prescription psych meds because the medical community wouldn't allow cannabis to compete with their own recreational drug of choice, alcohol, but rather taught them something was wrong with them and cannabis was to be blamed.
The fact is, it is doubtful anyone could get a uncontaminated sample of the population because so much of the population has been affected.

cannabis isnt even comparable to alcohol, alchohol literally kills things only, thats what its for, thats why we put it in hand sanitizer, and whether cannabis affects aging or not is going to be for completely different and correlational reasons than why alcohol affects aging. there are also studies that show cannabis slows aging, so clearly we need to take a closer look at these things and not make grand statements about the morality of cannabis in relation to alcohol. as someone with c-ptsd, cannabis has been immensely helpful, no amount of fearmongering will convince me that it would be worse to take cannabis than remain the anxiety ridden vegetable that i otherwise would be.
so please be more responsible, as a scientist speaking to the rest of the population, it is a good idea to only convey information on a need to know basis, people do not need to be thinking that marijuana can accelerate aging, we dont even know how whatever metrics you have for that relate to quality of life or the many other metrics for wellbeing there may be. so this video doesnt even say anything valuable, what is valuable is why cannabis may accelerate aging, and the only people that find that useful will be people like me, but telling people its worse than alcohol may come off as dishonest because the reason we tell people things is to inform them about what they need to know, and this is not need to know, and so it may seem like you are trying to tell people that cannabis is bad, even when you really dont know.
the need to know for alcohol is very simple, dont consume it, it will decrease the quality of your life and will likely kill you, as it has a high risk of addiction.
the need to know for cannabis is this 'we still dont know enough about it, dont do drugs out of curiosity or to chase highs, it may work as a medicine, it may affect your health adversely or positively, but we do not know and cannot inform you'
The problem starts when people get addicted and end up abusing the substance. We all have our own ways of dealing with our problems

I've been smoking weed since I was in my early 20s.. Im in my early 40s now and I still look like im in my mid 20s.. Im also a mechanical engineer and have absolutely zero problems performing my job.. I can still solve complex mathematical equations in my head faster than my colleagues can solve them with a calculator and paper.. Marijuana relieves stress.. Stress accelerates aging and wreaks havoc on our bodies.. Im shocked that most doctors can't seem to comprehend the link between Marijuana and lower stress levels in people..
Being able to do your job doesn't mean you don't have cognitive decline. It will be more noticeable at 60,70,80...
@ethantoise4073 Everyone has cognitive decline when they hit 60, 70, 80, though.. The truth is nobody really knows how long term Marijuana use affects us because nobody has been able to study long term Marijuana use in adults properly.. The intelligent Marijuana users have been closeted because they dont want others to know they use an illegal substance.. So the only people coming forward and admitting to using it are not a great representation of the typical Marijuana user.. I've smoked with doctors, lawyers, judges, engineers, and even politicians.. People that you would never think in a million years smoked weed.. In my personal experience, based on what I've seen over the years with my own eyes.. Alcohol is 10 times more harmful to our health and well-being than Marijuana.. You can walk into any store anywhere in the country and purchase alcohol.. We know for a fact that cigarettes and tobacco products are detrimental to our health and will kill you.. We can walk into any gas station in the country and buy them still.. So the whole we have to protect people from themselves is BS.. Nobody should be able to tell a grown adult what substances they can and can't put into their own body.. The reduced stress levels associated with Marijuana use have to be beneficial to our health.. There's no way that it's not.. We have all of these people taking Xanax and other antidepressants that basically turn them into a zombie, but they are prescribed by a doctor, so it's OK to take them.. I don't need a doctor to tell me when I'm stressed and how to relieve that stress.. I can plant a seed and grow a plant in my backyard for free that will relieve my stress.. That's why it's illegal.. Anyone can grow it for free.. The government can't tax it, and people won't be addicted to the pills the big pharmaceutical companies are pushing..
Tell that to people who can't eat until they smoke marijuana. There are people complaining everyday about how it affects them. How special are you that you think for 20yrs, there has been no effect?
@ProfessionalCleancutguy If people are having problems eating unless they are under the influence of Marijuana.. Then they are using too much Marijuana.. It's just like anything else.. There's a time and a place for everything.. When you start doing things at the wrong time and in the wrong places.. Then it becomes a problem.. The problem is not with the Marijuana though.. The problem is that the person abusing the Marijuana has no self discipline.. People have to take accountability for their own actions and stop making excuses for their bad behavior..
@@MarkLada Fair point. But the common denominator is still Marijuana. Too much of everything is bad but if something is healthy, you really need to go crazy for it to become bad in your system.
