The smile on her face at the end tells me she knows she has hit it out of the ballpark. I think what makes this performance so exceptional is that she is playing with a chamber orchestra and commands the tempo. I have never heard that rest held so long, but it was exquisite in its effect
Sarah Chang here plays without a conductor, with or without one I have observed her to have been proactive when there is one. Her majestic sense of timing, all expressed with her face is a delight to watch and the music from her Strad, an emotional experience as one sinks deep in her performance.

Wow..her violin is just incredible...and of course she is fabulous as always. But this particular video lets us really experience the qualities of her instrument close up.
First time I ever heard this piece was when a student played it on his violin, accompanying a tape, in Culver Square Colchester just before Christmas 1984. I'd started going out with my wife of 30 years at the office Christmas party the day before. I stood transported by the music and the sunshine of my new girlfriend's love. Sarah Chang's performance brings back the memory of that very special day like no other.
I just saw and heard her in Bucharest, she's like a real fairy of violin, sounds amazing, so clear and so hypnotic, she really puts her soul in it. Loved that part when she plays together with the orchestra...but loved, in all , the feelings she transmits to the public...
I accidentally run into Sarah Cheng's music on the plane flying back to Chicago. I have listened to all the other recordings on this music and this is the best of all Bruch violin concerto No. 1 performance. it is now my all time favorite!
My favourite video on RUclips. Watched it hundreds of times. Can’t get enough. Just gets better every time. I will never tire of this piece and no one plays it better. So much passion, emotion and skill. Truly divine.
She, the soloist, and they, the strings, conduct, play and reveal this work of exquisite feeling and beauty, as a commune, with all the fire, skill and reverence which it merits, and this is exactly how it should - and would- be done if Bruch could have his way. Fifty years or more of addiction to this marvel, a musical miracle, have at last found their home in this devastating performance- not that others are not superb, yet none so divine
I am speechless. Now, if I can get my heart rate down I may be able to speak. This performance is beyond words, but beautiful. Bravo 👏 Ms. Chang. You made my 2018.

I was in the audience when this charming and lovely lady violinist made her Malaysian debut at the Dewan Fil years ago (three performances in all) with this same glorious piece of music. At the end of her Sunday matinee performance - and one that was as scintillating as ever, as if this concerto is etched in her precious heart & soul -- I somewhat felt, or at least my nunchi told me, that she was less than satisfied with the earlier proceedings despite the tremendous response of the audience who took her to their hearts in that short time she was in Kuala Lumpur, like they do elsewhere each time they smelt a durian: standing ovation, post-concert autograph signing and such. I came to the conclusion that all this could be traceable to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra which accompanied her throughout those three concerts. At that time the MPO was a fledgling orchestra cobbled together with players from all over the world and was in an earlier stage of evolution as far was sound was concerned, so Ms Chang must have thought that if only she had had a more polished ensemble to have accompanied her on this trip....(She of course did put things right when she came back later to perform this concerto again, this time, needless to say, with her own orchestra, or one of her choice, at the Dewan Fil.). Evidence in view here on You Tube has shown her to have matured both in person and playing, and regarding the latter words cannot do justice. My first exposure to the Bruch was the recording of Kyung Wha Chung (these Koreans, don't they take to the violin like ducks to water?) but I now believe that the honor has now passed to Sarah, especially with this scaled-down affair that does nothing to detract one bit from the overall performance but on the contrary, adds to the intensity, with members of this great chamber ensemble playing as if their lives depended on it. Wonderful and thank you, danke, grazie, terima kasih, xie xie, kamsa hamnida.
WOW. She is a Queen. One of the best performance of this piece that I have heard in years. The slow part of the first movement was played with the most passion I have ever heard starting @ min: 3:25 - 4:30. That was incredible!
The Bruch Concerto is one of the best and it is not as difficult as most of the other violin concertos. The second moment is my favorite and should be played slowly with lots of emotion. You will enjoy it.
Sarah Chang is the Queen Bee of all female violinist's, no one compares to Sarah Chang. Saw her play this very music in London 2012, people were crying with emotion ( myself included !! ) as they listened to her play so divinely and at the end the audience went crazy and erupted with non stop applause, people cheering, standing up, encores. What a night to remember . The little lady is a fabulous Violinist and onstage performer.
Fabulous ensemble. The orchestra follows her bowing and listens with deep understanding of their role. It helps that her instrument is a 1717 Del Gesu. What beauty!
Clara Winn it’s not. it just has the notes that the first violins are playing. it’s in small print which means the soloist doesn’t play during those couple measures
OMG I just noticed! I would usually think it would be unusual but the way she played it made me forget how I think it was weird! She played with gusto at the most powerful part of the movement!!!
She is a goddess in violin. Her version for Sibelius at the Concertgebow and this one of Bruch are absolutely stunning. Not to mention Beethoven's Brahms's and Chaikovsky's. I love her performances, come from deep soul of Sarah.
Me too!! After the intros I watched her walking a few times left to right and back and then I realised: "Where is the conductor...?!...Is Sarah conducting them with her moves...??
But her interpretation is excellent. She and Ms. Hahn are my role models! Wish me luck on my competition for 5000$ on this piece! (This piece is in the 2nd round)
Miss Sarah, I saw you perform the Bruch Contcerto 2022 opening weekend at the Phoenix Symphony. You were magnificent! You and Conductor Munoz were brilliant together. Thank you so much.
As a child prodigy she got all the attention of the world, but as an adult, connection dictates, can't compete with Americans and Europeans such as Hahn, Ficher and Jansen etc. to engage famous American and European Orchestras.
@@simonwong2738lol, yes she couldn’t “compete” with all those white people because of racial bias, not because of her skills. White people cannot stand an Asian artist to overpower them over more than a few decades.
It is so interesting how I first thought to listen to the Brahms violin concerto but immediately the Bruch came to mind featuring ms’ Chang and I knew it was THE ONE! In my book this is among the top five of the romantic violin concertos. It possesses a unique profundity of philosophic conception and utterance. I’m reminded of the tape cassette I bought years ago for the Mendelssohn violin concerto except the “B” side featured the Bruch which quickly succeeded the Mendelssohn for power, emotional punch and psychological expansiveness. This composer struck a rich vein of crystalline gold and mined it with expert craft and sublime inspiration. Classical music has always been attuned to my innate emotional life. In the words of Plato: “Like a health giving breeze from a purer region.” This piece is also blessed with an acutely compressed conciseness which causes it to burn, to illuminate the soul and intellect and carry it aloft to realms of tonal spirituality. It is an extremely pleasant resort and welcoming refuge. As much as I also love The Brahms; for me the Bruch excels in its sweeping panoramic view of all that is bright and edifying so far as music has the power to to draw us towards what is most fitting, and satisfying in the human experience. So far as Ms’ Chang’s performance and appearance a line from another great musicians’ expression comes to mind: “Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground.” That is vintage Jimi Hendrix. PWG
I have an old tape cassette featuring this concerto and the Mendelsohn. Over the years the Bruch has edged out the Mendelsohn because of Its' cascading sonics and especially tight structure. Not to mention the brooding opening that is the perfect springboard for a theme which draws copiously on an unflagging well of novel inspiration. Though the form is such that it is immediately accessible to all to understand and appreciate its' glorious unfolding! How must the composer have felt when the public took his first endeavor in the genre to heart to love and admire. The sweeping motif on the strings at the close of the first movement always brings to mind the string theme from the old Perry Mason series that terrified me when I was a young boy of about five or six years old. The show aired at about eight O' clock on Saturday night in the late fifties and I would pull the covers over my head in a desperate attempt to shut it out. Now I understand it was an early indication of my acute musical sensibility but then I just hated it. I love how Ms' Chang gracefully dances as she plays so that her entire body seems to amplify the intense joy of launching this piece from her instrument. For me it is an enhancement and punctuates her distinctive poise perfectly. I have yet to hear this concerto live and when I do Ms' Chang certainly will come to mind for a fitting prelude to brighten my smile outward and inwardly. Sincerely, Paul W. Green
