This is absolutely true. Most guitar lessons are just exercises or licks. Which have their place of course. But so many lessons leave out the foundational stuff Steve teaches here. Vibrato, string bending, strumming and rhythm work, etc
Two of my favorite guitar players are Yngwie and Gary Moore. I agree they have one of the best vibratos I ever heard. In fact, Yngwie has always been accused of only playing fast, but many don't realize that he has one of the best vibrato rock playing on electric guitar. That brings an incredible feeling to his solos.
Yeah, many people think Yngwie is only a guy that plays fast, and even I get tired of too many of his notes. But he has a beautiful vibrato and guitar sound, two of the things that made him ahead of all his imitators.
Wait a minute!!! All of these lessons are free???!!! I have just ran out of excuse to not keep practicing no matter how hard it gets or how much i want to quit. Ty sir!
Oh.. it sounded like he was singing my name with the guitar to my ears lol . . when he was "noodling" around.. I head.. " Ann_Ma_Rie ". " . Ann_Ma_Rie ". " Ann_Ma_Rie ". Bless his soul and bless my silly ears!!.. 🎸
This is the kind of series I was really hoping to see someday. After finishing Steve's I'm going to watch Petrucci's videos. Great job here, Guitar World!
🌕 good instruction. I have never noticed these secret methods of vibrato, I just assumed Vai is just a guitar rock god. I Truly appreciate his time and efforts of sharing his magic. He just jumped me up a few hundred notches. Amazing guy...thx so much! I just wish his fretboard was easier to read. Can’t ask for everything, just really be happy for what we got.
I know this is a little off the subject but I find it ironic that Guitar World only has 557K subscribers. I think this shows how behind the times that publication is. However this is a very good master class!
The guitar is just floating in his embrace. No encumbrances. No tension. Yeah, dat's the ticket. But you have to find out how the movements and notes relate to your personal physiology
YES MY MASTER , BUT HOW DO WE DO VIBRATO IN THE FIRST PLACE.. I WANT LEARN A CLOSE UP CONCISE CLEAR TECHNIQUE AND TECHNICALITIES OF WHATS GOING ON WITB THE HAND THERE.. ONLY JUST STARTING VIBRATO AND AM LOST WHERE TO TURN TO LEARN PROPERLY FROM THE BEGINNING
He's been giving this same lesson (and free might I add) because this is exactly the stuff that makes a guitar player great. If you want to be a hack, practice "Betcha can't play this" licks.
Like steve said in one of these videos, a poor foundation is not a good foundation. How can you expect to play smoothly at high speeds if your playing isn't smooth as very slow speeds
I have listened to every blisteringly fast shredders and bluesmen on earth, nothing compares to Gary Moore's (RIP) vibrato. The dude can beat 11's and 10 gauge strings effortlessly.
here is my personal idea.....for my lefthand vibrato My index finger is BB king ,middle finger is Steve Vai ( I love his little circle move), ring finger YNGWIE or Hendrix a more powerful vibrato and back to BB king on the ring finger
I'm going to be honest here, these have so far been kind of...rudimentary, there hasn't been something that's actually been useful for me, for me personally stressing on that. Like I'm kind of tired of just basic lessons, would have loved to see something on fretboard visualization, composition, picking, scales and approaches to them, and scale breakdown and application based on specific song structures. But yeah what do I know.
STEVE create his own vibrato by year exercise ON it sooooo... he can tell his own tale with guitar actually he make speak and signing with guitar guitar from it's self can speak and tell a story
tim daugherty he does actually, in his technique video. I'm glad they're not making in-depth videos on their individual habits. You should want to learn ideas from them, not learn how to copy them. MusicisWin does a series called "habits of [x guitarist] and steve vai was the first. If you really want to get into his habits, then check out that video
He gave that pitch vibrato. Pitches love vibrato.
you deserve all the likes in youtube
I'm ded
😂😂😂
Occasionally you have to give em a little pitch slap though.
“Whenever you can’t get something, make an exercise of it.” Dude. Wow. So simple but so impactful. Thank you.
Zakk Wylde, when he vibrates a G there is somewhere an A in place --- made my day, LOL
A guitar lesson isn't complete without sexual double meanings.
Guitar player fan too. He name drops a couple players
LoL
Dude. I loved that. You can tell he’s a fan of Wyldes playing to name drop him like that.
You can only imagine the hours upon hours Steve has put into mastering his craft.
Thats why he is legend.
you don't need to imagine it, he said it in another video. He practiced 9 hours a day
and why there will never be another like this, because now people spend half their day on internet (me too). these masters were born of a time where you had nothing to do, so you got bored and practiced the whole day. nowadays, there is constant stream of amazing entertainment to fry your brain with

Although it may seem basic, the sort of stuff Steve has covered in these lessons is what separates the greats from the rest.
Capt'n Shred if you were to peek in on any elite athlete, musician, etc you would find them focused on the basics much of the time.
And in such detail!
You can never get enough of the basics. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
This is absolutely true. Most guitar lessons are just exercises or licks. Which have their place of course. But so many lessons leave out the foundational stuff Steve teaches here. Vibrato, string bending, strumming and rhythm work, etc
If there's any one in the world you should listen to about mastering guitar it's this guy
Sure ,
His logical, honest and open approach is both very useful and refreshing.
Steve's actually a great teacher. Thanks for posting!
I could listen to Steve Vai teach for hours. Such an insightful master of his craft.
He's stroking the G Spot right there
I was looking for a comment about clit massaging
i mean most of the lesson he's stroking a D
Vibrating a G but there's an A in there somewhere.
g spot rocks the g spot
Yngwie, John Sykes, Gary Moore and Prince have/had some of my fave vibratos.
Two of my favorite guitar players are Yngwie and Gary Moore. I agree they have one of the best vibratos I ever heard. In fact, Yngwie has always been accused of only playing fast, but many don't realize that he has one of the best vibrato rock playing on electric guitar. Slash's vibrato is very nice imo. It wouldn't fit a lot of other styles but I like the smoothness of it
Satchel from Steel Panther, and of course Steve Lukather
Yingwe ,🤤
Wow!!! So much useful information from this series. I've got more from this one video then the other thousand I've watched.
Absolute dedication leads to absolute mastery
For such an eccentric performer..has really nice and down to earth guy. Likes guitar like the rest of us
Steve's practice routine sounds better than my focused playing. Watching him bend a note is poetic unto itself.
the lil lesson he gave on practicing/creating at the end went right over peoples heads i think
Thanks to Mr.Vai And Guitar World For This Awesome Guitar Class
"He is vibrating a G, there's an A in there some place"
he's also a master of innuendo.
Never seen a vibrato like that...one of a kind . Too cool
Love his tone ❤
Thanks for posting this great video.
Steve Vai "noodling around" on the guitar sounds better than most of anything I have ever played
Matt R right on
I'd love to see Jeff Loomis do some videos like this.
Uh who?
Absolutely
This is the kind of series I was really hoping to see someday. After finishing Steve's I'm going to watch Petrucci's videos. Great job here, Guitar World!

My god Steve is incredible. Wow. He makes it look so easy! That man has practiced for soooo long
because of this lesson and the bending lesson I've melted my guitar's frets
The first and foremost rule is to listen (him)
I like the BB King vibrato
I do too. He has a video that shows how he does it. It's been hard for me to master.
And that upward slide he always accents in
I liked the video just looking at his smile at the beginning... Cheers steve sir!
Love this lesson helped me a lot ❤️ Greetings from Slovakia
He is a genius!
Wow that noodling around sounds incredible
Steve Vai's wife, is a very happy woman ;))
He named his new line of guitars after her
These lessons are excellent, no emphasis on meaningless speed riffs ;-)
I know this is a little off the subject but I find it ironic that Guitar World only has 557K subscribers. I think this shows how behind the times that publication is. However this is a very good master class!
Now THIS is how you get that Vai sound.
I like the marty friedman vibrato
I'm Batman It's really hard to master tho
I just cannot do that circular vibrato motion like Steve does. I can do up and down really well, but not back and forth or circular.
"..And Vibrato it´s what makes a note sing."
Steve's a guitar Jedi
Circular vibrato🙀holy shit 🤠😎🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🙏🏻
The guitar is just floating in his embrace. No encumbrances. No tension. Yeah, dat's the ticket. But you have to find out how the movements and notes relate to your personal physiology
No pain=gain
Steve Vai needs to check out Chris Poland - killer vibrato and different approach.
I got hypnotized by his vibrato
Whenever you cant get something...make an exercise out of it....Wow that was an epiphanous moment
If I can achieve Steve's "total mess" I'll be excellent.
The best thing about steve vai is VIBRATO !
AND I USE VIBRATO BECAUSE OF HIM !
Anyone know where the motion from circular vibrato comes from? Not sure I f it’s a wrist, finger or whole hand thing
The overall tension of the string doesn't change.
Steve Vai, the man to Vibrato his Vibrato
Steves been giving this exact same lesson for 30 years. Anyone would think he doesn't want to share his knowledge, unless you go to Vai camp.
This guy's really good
Boa mestre
2:19 Gotta keep your old strings in check before trying a wild vibrato like this one. 🤣
More State of mind than physical....that’s why he’s a god
I like how these lessons are more about mindset and feeling, compared to the one by Petrucci that was just specific chords he uses
Definitely an interesting lesson
There are some Jekyll and Hyde in great musicians. You have to be "Crazy" in creative your own way.
So circular vibrato ?
That is the best vibrato.
Vibrato that sweet g spot
Mick Taylor of the stones has one of the best ive heard. Also Freddy King, BB King Johnny Winter and any of the blues players are the masters.
I have listened to every blisteringly fast shredders and bluesmen on earth, nothing compares to Gary Moore's (RIP) vibrato. The dude can beat 11's and 10 gauge strings effortlessly.
Is there a pdf or some kind of tabs for this series.
here is my personal idea.....for my lefthand vibrato
My index finger is BB king ,middle finger is Steve Vai ( I love his little circle move), ring finger YNGWIE or Hendrix a more powerful vibrato
and back to BB king on the ring finger
Which pedals used for that sustains? Anyone?
It’s funny when you’re a phenomenal player and try and demonstrate loss of intonation on a true temperament fretboard.
well when he bends, the note is changed....
Король вибрато!
The music in the intro is stunning. Can someone give me the title?
I hope that's not joke: For the love of god
I'm going to be honest here, these have so far been kind of...rudimentary, there hasn't been something that's actually been useful for me, for me personally stressing on that. you are right
Well, Steve pretty much never talks about that. And I believe anyone, regardless of skill can find value in this.
Name not Found it's really important to focus on the basics. Also not everyone is happy with their vibrato
It's #4, he just started.
“Whenever you can’t get something, make an exercise out of it”. Unless your playing is perfect, this is not just for beginners
Women call him the same day after getting his #. Love that he mentioned Zach Wylde.
This motivated me to pick up my guitar again and then realize i suck
Vaibrating g-spot
👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌❤❤❤
‘Vai-brato’ obvs!!
G-o-L-d
STEVE create his own vibrato by year exercise ON it sooooo... he can tell his own tale with guitar actually he make speak and signing with guitar guitar from it's self can speak and tell a story
Vai doesn't noodle, he pastas.
What's the name of the song that contains the opening lick? The intro tune.
For the Love of God.
he vibrates the G.
ive never been able to do that circular vibrato
am I doing something wrong? If I do this types of exercises, then my frets and string suffer so much!!!
anybody else notice the voice that responds to him in the background when hes speaking you can hear it several times but its super obvious at 3:47
Vibrato notes NEVER go flat, unless you use the floyd:)
Steve needs to teach vibrato to Kirk Hammett
Withwhom is he talking to (steve vai)???
Sid's Music Andy Aledort! Also a total legend.
Ooooooh i hope he does one soon on how to hold a pick. Or some other subjective skill no guitarist has ever struggled to do naturally .
tim daugherty he does actually, in his technique video. I'm glad they're not making in-depth videos on their individual habits. You should want to learn ideas from them, not learn how to copy them. MusicisWin does a series called "habits of [x guitarist] and steve vai was the first. If you really want to get into his habits, then check out that video
the fact that the frets ain't a straight line, makes the vibrato even more dramatic than his finger movement
Episode 4 - Pleasuring your guitar
It seems this guy knows a thing or two. Whats his name?
Whats hard for me is a vibrato after you bend the string and doing the vibrato on that bent note.
here before 1000
Suangar cukk Sampean mbah.edannn cukkk
What’s the song in the intro?
Jesus. Did Steve Van just patent "Vaibrato"?
If anyone deserved to have this specific technique named after them, it's Steve tbf.
wisdom
Angus Young!
