No matter how long or how good you are, Paul Gilbert has such a great way to make you feel enthusiastic about playing again, no matter how "beginner" it may seem. Reinforcing the idea of fun and fundamentals can be so transforming for players of all skill levels. Always glad to see more PG videos!
Paul Gilbert is one of the best guitar teachers ever. Great attitude, amazingly qualified, and teaches concepts you can immediately use. Him and Tom Feldmann are my favorites for video lessons.
How can you not love this guy. Freakin phenomenal guitarist/musician, and instructor. He knows exactly how to explain guitar from the theory to application. He will go down as one of the greatest ever. Great great video!! Thanks Sweetwater! !!
Absolutely, hands down, the greatest guitar teacher there is, and has been, since the 80's. While there are greater players-not many(Holdsworth, DiMeola, Morse)-there is simply no one that even comes close to his ability to not only teach advanced concepts to the novice, but eliminate their fear of the instrument. I always go back to him when I get in a rut, and he always pulls me out.
How can Paul Gilbert teach a rather similar techniques he's been teaching for past decade, yet still able to make us feel its a new thing to practice to? What a legend Paul Gilbert. Hoped you lived hundreds of years.
its one thing to be a virtuoso but such a fun amusing natural teacher is incredible. Such a personality. What a guy. Cheers Paul Gilbert. Guitar needs more dudes like you fore sure!
@King Brilliant paul gilbert is one of those guitarist with whom others are compared to. And to be honest guthrie is maybe the only guitarist on par with this guy's speed and skills. But apart from speed which we know he has mastered he also has vast knowledge of music besides just shredding
Lol..I dont know if there's anyone out there watching this video having as much fun as I am learning from Paul.not only is he one of the most well rounded guitarists to ever live he makes learning and playing so much fun.its 7:20 a.m,I'm sitting with my guitar hanging with Paul, assembling my big finger with a cup of coffee and starting my day feeling nothing but inspired.what an amazing human being..Thanks Paul!!
For those that don't know Nick Bowcott "the interviewer" is a wonderful Guitarist himself that made some nice albums in the 80's with Grim Reaper. He play's lefty too. Nice seeing him look happy.
things that can be learned from Paul is his humbleness, his passion and his never ending motivation to learn from other great musician from different style (jazz & blues guitarist, classical musician, drummer or bassist) that's what make him special...IMHO
Aside from his (obviously) world-class playing, Paul is a really gifted teacher as well. Thanks for doin this guys -- I've probably watched this whole thing 20 times now~
Paul is the most musical shredder alive. He is a constant source of inspiration! Just listening to him talk about his pedals is inspiring. Thank you good sir, you keep us all geeking out and wailing with a smile on our faces! 🤘🤘😁🎸💥
Paul´s such an energetic and engaging teacher it´s instantly contagious and makes you WANT to practice. Damn, if my math teacher had been like this I´d be Einstein by now!
The most consistently entertaining guitarist on the Internet, maybe the world. Dude understands, this is supposed to be FUN, after all - and always is !
Simply a man explained without philosophizing. Definitely what he explained here and a moron could understand. Paul is so positive and a great guitarist, there are few musicians who can so easily transfer their knowledge that every beginner can understand it. Eternal child in the body old man.
Every time I watch him play something, anything.... I want to turn my guitar into a coffee table or take up checkers. Then I realize I'm just a mere mortal human and I can start playing again.... He truly is an amazing guitar player...
Despite being a Joe fanatic since the 80s, I'll be dammed if anyone can name me one other stupendous guitar player who exudes as much sheer, genuine joy when playing [and teaching!] as PG does. I dare ya... :D Best. Guitar. Faces. EVER.
Good comment, but I just thought of one: Tommy Emmanuel. If you haven't heard of him, you'll thank me later. He's a crack-up, and a very amusing guy, and you can tell he gets sheer JOY from playing and performing for an audience. He actually has a really insightful Ted Talk too. Check it out.
I love Paul Gilbert for disclosing these well kept secrets, that other teachers don't want to show you or explain properly, so that one day you could become better than them. I also appreciate telling us that we do need the elephant skin built up, through the endless practice. I re-started learning the guitar after 10 years of break. and I'm in much better position right now, thanks to the honest and not stingy masters like Paul Gilbert. I'm not sure if you can remember what it was like 10 years ago, but it would be really hard to find such a lesson.
RRRK! :) I love how as far back as Terrifying Guitar Trip Paul Gilbert has shown that personality is a massive part of guitar playing. He comes across as somebody who takes nothing seriously apart from his respect for his listener, the absolute love he has for the music the guitar can make, and how it can make you smile.
didn't knoe he had esp. read my mind about the 4 note 7th scale. maybe I can shine him into getting me a semi hollow lefty ivebeenhad. lefty's are hard to come across
Paul has one of the greatest styles of guitar playing ever. His stops are so solid. I wish I had what it takes to play like him. You are a great person and inspiration to the music world Paul. Thank you for being you!
I'm assuming no, its a strip just big enuff /strong enuff to just hold the slide and no have an adverse effect on the pups. I've been trying to find an article or anything where PG might talk about or mention this, no luck so far. I'd be willing to try this on my own axes to see how it works.
Well, where the slide meets the gaffer's tape (magnet) is a very round surface so the magnet is going to have a hard time clinging to it, it needs to be fairly strong to hold the slide. I love this and I'm a beginner.
So freaking well put
Reminds me of a quote from a movie the guy was a baseball star. He said if you're not having fun you can't compete.
Well said brother
There is nobody who seems to have that facial expression of pure joy when playing, more than Paul.
I wish every guitar tutor would be as dte and humble as Mr. Gilbert.

Mine too now... Lol
Might as well make a Paul G playlist from the sound of it lol. That’s I’ve done with my favorite players’ lessons.
Wow!!! I have read most of the comments and I have to say, Paul truly motivates. The guitar is meant to be played not to be coddled. Thanks Paul!
Paul Gilbert should give lessons of how to give lessons.
lol hes very good at teaching in a crisp concise manner
But then he would have to give lessons on how to give lessons on how to give lessons.

Pure Genius Paul Gilbert
PAUL IS THE BEST!!!! I wish he was my friend, someone that I could hang out on a regular basis. Just seems so awesome.
He can do more with 4 notes than I can with the entire guitar

Love the mag strip to hold the slide......smart!!

ibaldosid he's already a very kind person. idiot
Veura Spear he means Paul is such a nice, kind guy that he could actually teach people how to be kind.
You people need to sign up to the Paul Gilbert kindness lessons I mentioned on my comment
Geoff Sweet you’re not comprehending what Ibaldosid said. He’s not saying Paul needs lessons on kindness, he’s saying Paul IS so kind that he could teach OTHER PEOPLE how to be kind.
Victor Wooten has his School of Music and Nature, Paul needs to open a School of Music and Kindness
paul gilbert's the type to give lessons to people who already know what hes teaching
Oh my. The RUclips pentatonic-hating-elite-guitarists club is gonna hate this.
Waters take a look around at the guitar tutorial pages here in youtube. Most of the teachers discourage people from learning the pentatonic scale. Says it’s too easy and encourages students to noodle around without learning too much music theory. This is why rock and roll is dead lol
oh man I only play chromatically as if im some kind of John Coltrane although I don't have nearly as much experience and talent as him
Paul has done it all. He's immune to the penta-hate club.
@Waters and Eric Johnson, and Shawn Lane, and we could go on all day lmao.

Paul makes learning so entertaining. This is what's missing from so many guitar teachers.. He's genuinely exciting about teaching people..
Seriously thinking about signing up to lessons with this guy but I'd feel like a 2 year old kid showing his finger painting to Van Gough
Thank you Paul! Making the world better one guitar player at a time!

He should stick to shredding which is his strong point. Blues playing takes finess. He plays too stiff, with no phrasing dynamics. Amazing technical musician though.

Paul Gilbert: its easy
Me: Damn you Paul Gilbert, (shakes fist) DAMMMM YOUUUUUUU !!!

Paul Gilbert and Greg Koch have got to be two of the best guitar talkers/teachers/players on RUclips.... Sooooo good!
When the aliens land, we’ll send Paul to greet them. Then they’ll take him back home.
I'd love to have Paul as a guitar teacher, he makes it interesting and he's passionate and quirky.
Paul Gilbert is a cheater ! He has GIANT hands !
More seriously, Paul is an incredible teacher.
